Mary Pat is a shining example that, with focus and hard work, an individual can make a significant impact on his or her community in a very short period of time. When she retired in 2004, she held the title of Vice President of Worldwide Regulatory Strategy. As important as her profession was to Rita, it was no more so than her family, which includes her husband and two children. She found time to be involved in her husband’s political campaigns and her children’s after-school activities. Rita is an outstanding example of what one energetic, skilled and motivated professional can do. For that Le Moyne College is proud to honor Rita (Convy) Wittich with the 2007 Ignatian Award for Professional Achievement. For over 30 years, Barbara Maylone Karper has In his work for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), he helped to bring together local, state and federal resources, as well as residents, to rejuvenate a 16-block area of the City of Syracuse. The ambitious project is a testament to his desire to see a financially sound Syracuse in which residents may take pride. Jim has stood out as a leader on the national as well as the local level, and as someone who can be counted on even in the direst of situations. He was entrusted to manage expenses for the HUD personnel who were deployed during hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Again, he gave back to communities in need. The contributions Jim has made outside of work are as impressive as his professional ones. He has donated his time and talent to the Syracuse Opera, the United Way of Broome County and the Community Hospital Foundation. He also played a key role in the Syracuse St. Patrick’s Day parade as a past president. Jim has served his alma mater, too, as a member of Le Moyne College’s Board of Regents and Finance Committee. For the drive and character that permeate everything his does, Le Moyne College presents been behind the College’s excellence that is at the core of a Le Moyne education. Barbara’s joie de vivre and contagious spirit of optimism continue to draw the community together in support of learning. In her role as Assistant Vice President for Campus Activities and Multicultural Programs, Barbara’s dedication and compassion have earned her a place in the hearts of students and colleagues. Embodying the Jesuit tenet of “cura personalis,” Barbara’s personal concern for the individual has helped build trusting relationships with students who’ve come to depend on that support. The quintessential collaborator, Barbara is fiercely devoted to improving the quality of the College’s institutional structures and practices. Known for her tireless commitment toward making the Le Moyne community a diverse and welcoming place, Barbara’s inclusive approach supports the College’s mission through action. That action is reflected through her work across many College committees including the Diversity Committee, the ADA Committee, Advisement Committee and Lecture Committee, as well as the University Neighbor Partnership Committee. For the difference you have made and for your commitment to the Jesuit ideals of education, Le Moyne is proud to present to you James J. Murphy with the 2007 Ignatian Award for Community Service.
