Own It Financial Education is a free four-week program that provides its students with the knowledge and tools they need to become financially stable and independent. Our curriculum teaches students how to: • Save for the future • Budget • Use credit wisely • Manage a bank account Measurement/Evaluation The program coordinator uses confidential income documentation forms to verify income eligibility and pre- and post-session surveys to measure client knowledge and before and after the course. Staff also contacts clients six months after the course to measure progress towards goals and provide additional support if needed. 75% of participants report an increase in savings or reduced personal debt six to nine months after completing the program. The YWCA is one of 15 nonprofits participating in United Way’s Financial Stability Partnership (FSP). The purpose of the FSP partnership is to create a shared performance management system to be utilized by small and mid size nonprofits that provide financial education and empowerment services. With this system, these nonprofits will share the infrastructure for measuring their impact and leveraging this data for program development and measurement of social return on investment. Learn more at www.ywcaaz.org/own-it-financial-education Six months after completing Own It: • 3 out of 4 students report an increase in savings. • 3 out of 4 students report reducing personal debt. • 3 out of 4 graduates follow a household budget • 3 out of 4 graduates report an increase in their credit score. • 3 out of 4 graduates have improved their credit. SENIOR PROGRAMS YWCA Multi-Cultural Centers YWCA’s Senior Centers have provided vital services to over 9,031 senior residents annually in the West Valley for over 37 years. West Valley Seniors and disabled adults benefit daily from the nutritious meals, social activities, companionship, and transportation provided by YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix. On an annual basis YWCA provides many services to the senior and disabled residents. Our services include: Senior meals, Dial-A-Ride transportation, program and activity planning, exercise classes, information and referral services, and health education. Our senior services program continues to expand. EASTER 2014 • YWCA staff and volunteers serve over 102,525 meals to seniors annually. • 60,000 meals are delivered directly to the homes of seniors in need. • Over 11,904 Dial-A-Rides have been provided. “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou Arizona has one of the nation’s largest senior populations, and the number of seniors is projected to triple within the next fifty years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 1 in 12 people in Arizona over the age of 65 are living in poverty, and thousands more live on the brink of poverty. Social services cannot meet the rising demand. The YWCA Meals on Wheels and dining room meals programs are a lifesustaining outreach to the growing population of low income and homebound elderly. We Feed Four Feet Program In 2005, staff at the YWCA became aware of the startling number of elders in our community going without food and neglecting their nutritional needs in order to purchase pet food to feed their beloved companions. Coupled with that knowledge and the medical data indicating that pets are good therapy for seniors, YWCA created the “We Feed Four Feet” program to ensure that both the pet and the senior are well fed. The program receives contributions and pet food through individual donors, community organizations, and businesses. The pet food is provided to low-income seniors and disabled persons who participate in the YWCA’s home delivery meals program. Council on Aging The Council on Aging is a program for the aging community to help improve quality of life through nutrition, socialization, and life sustaining help to older, low income, and at risk adults. Monthly meetings feature current trends and timely information from experts in the field of aging services. Each speaker discusses the most current approach in caring for and helping our senior population stay healthy and vibrant so that they can enjoy this special time in life.
