May 2016 Volume 29 No. 5 FROM THE PRESIDENT Next Monthly Meeting “Misery, misery, misery”. Can you say that out loud and not think of the Green Goblin in the Spiderman movie? That’s what I was thinking last week when the skies were brown on both Tuesday and Thursday. I had my heart set on squeezing in a few miles before the end of the month and it just wasn’t meant to be. It’s a letdown when you come out of the office at lunch time and everything is pretty outside and by 4:00 the sky is brown and the trees are laying down. Oh well, I guess that’s West Texas in April. March sort of blew in like the lions although April seemed to bear that resemblance more. And while it is still early, May has already threatened to derail the first Tuesday night ride with rain. But we lucked out, the storms moved on and wheels rolled as scheduled. Date: May 9, 2016 Meeting @ 7:00pm Where: Re/Max Office 4703 S Loop 289 Lubbock, TX 79424 If our prayers (cyclist type prayers) are heard the weather will be perfect until November. It will only rain before noon on Tuesday and Thursday and after noon on Saturday and Sunday. Not too much and not too little. Too much rain means bugs in the bar ditches and too little means blowing dirt. The temps will hang between 74 and 80. I’d like to say the weather was always perfect for riding but it just doesn’t seem to work out that way. Anyway, summer is just around the corner so I’d better hurry up and drop 15 lbs and work on building up some heat tolerance. After all there are lots of local and not-so-local events coming up. Keep an eye on the calendars. See you on the road! We’ll continue to raise awareness, money and involvement in ending the cycle of hunger as we ride six days and up to 486 miles across Texas From Fredericksburg to Dallas. May 16 is a travel day to Fredericksburg with a 40-mile afternoon warm-up ride. As always, we take good care of you with hotels, SAG, breakfasts, snacks, suppers and transportation from Dallas to Fredericksburg and to nightly suppers which are all included in the fee. Full-week and single-day riders are all welcome as we ride well and do good. Full-week riders also get a 2016 Bike Out Hunger jersey included in the fee…so, probably want to ride the whole week. Ride well. Ride a lot. Do great good. Bike Out Hunger – Texas 2016 is a fully supported ride with SAG, during ride snacks and stretch points, suppers and for those signing on for the full week you also get hotel nights and breakfasts. We cyclists come together to enjoy our passion of riding and our desire to improve the lives of those in our communities. We ride to raise money and awareness of the hunger needs in our communities. On average, one out of four Texas children are food insecure. That’s actually unacceptable. Your efforts on this ride will help lower those rates on a very real and local level. There are three ride groups for you to choose your daily pace. For the 100+ mile days, there is a shorter option. And, with SAG always nearby, if you need to stop, you can call it a day…we won’t judge. Well, we won’t judge for long… Riding with a fun and encouraging group is easier than you think. Come join and find out. Live in Austin or Waco or San Antonio? We usually have riders from these areas that may be able to help get you back home after the ride on Saturday. If there’s a large group, we can add this to the motor coach expense.
