The Men’s 1st grade team finished mid table, with the highest number of points achieved in recent history, and were only a few losing games off making semi finals. The women’s premier teams had fantastic seasons with both making the play offs. The 1st grade women lost their semi final and the 2nd grade women narrowly missed out in the Grand Final. At the end of the season, SUHC had 7 senior teams playing finals hockey and took away championships in the men’s 8th grade and Men Vets C Grade. I had the privilege of watching our 8th grade men compete in their Grand Final and the spirit shown by those players on that day was second to none ‐ truly inspirational. One of the key factors in recent years for the success of our senior club has been player retention in our higher grades and we found ourselves in a position in 2011 where we had 1st grade men’s and women’s squads consisting of many more locally based players. Not since the days of grass hockey have we had such a strong contingent of locally based players. Bringing this philosophy back into the club over the past years has been a key factor for the success of the higher grade teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions, and it is hoped in 2012 that this retention and recruitment of locally based players continues. This year, the executive worked hard on a number of key club issues, with plenty of attention on the junior component of the club. The executive delved into the management structure of the juniors and focused on developing new ways of running the juniors in a more efficient way. The club organised a Junior Planning Day where a range of people, from junior parents to senior players and club coaches, sat down for a few hours and set goals. One was the creation of a junior subcommittee to be led by the Junior VP and the second was to create a SU Junior Club Strategy. This plan is set to change the way we do things in the junior club, in terms of the recruitment of players and coaches, creating more teams in all ages groups and improving communication between players/parents and coaches. The strategy will improve all facets of the junior club and subsequently make being apart of the SU Juniors an enjoyable and rewarding experience for the player, the coach and the parent. Most importantly, the key requirement for this to be successful is participation by parents and club members (seniors, juniors or vets). The junior club is no different to any other sporting club in Australia, its volunteers are what keep it running. Thanks to all those that were involved on the Executive and the General Committee in 2011. We have been through everything hockey could throw at us, yet you have all been unrelentingly professional and your motivation towards making our club better and keeping our club running has been superb. To the new Executive and General Committee, good luck! I can’t wait to see SUHC become a bigger and better club in the future. At the end of this year, I move away from SUHC knowing the club is in a strong position and will progress in its performance. SUHC is life to many of us, and for those who are passionate and enjoy their experiences in the club, keep it up! It’s what keeps us going. SUHC is about friends and strangers coming together and fighting an enemy under one blue and gold banner. SUHC is a club which creates friendships and relationships forever, and I know as this continues to be a theme, these fundamental aspects which create our club’s success will continue in 2012. Finally, a huge congratulations to our gold medal winning Men’s Uni games team and our Women’s grand finalist team. This makes Sydney University the premier university hockey club in the country and says a lot about the progress we have made and about where our club is heading. Good Luck in 2012 and beyond, SUHC!! Rob de Castella, World Champion marathon runner, when describing a marathon once said, ‘If you feel bad at 10 miles, you're in trouble. If you feel bad at 20 miles, you're normal. If you don't feel bad at 26 miles, you're abnormal." Well, in what seemed like a marathon hockey season, I can only compare 10 miles to 6 rounds, 20 miles to 12 rounds and 26 miles to 24 rounds. A season of hockey is a huge commitment. Having volunteered to help the club for a few seasons now, this year felt like the longest. Week in, week out, I lived its drama. It’s full of everything ‐ wins, losses, huge nights out, grumbles, thrills, disappointments and encouragingly, success! We’re a fairly big hockey club so there are lots to manage. I set myself the same goals as 2010: 1.

To win Premierships. To continue developing our premier squads and elite athlete program. To further integrate our club across all sections – men’s, women’s, vets and juniors. Be a visible and active member of the club. To ensure our members remain happy and enjoying their hockey. So, how did these go? 1.

We won 2 premierships. Improvement on last season’s grand total of 0. In the senior club, we pretty much improved in all areas bar a few grades. Certainly going in to the last 4/5 rounds, we had well over half the club sitting around top 4/5th position. Our Premier squads are looking stronger than ever. Key to that is not only recruitment but retention and I’m confident the men will sustainably improve over the next few season. We even have boys who won’t arrive for a couple more years expressing real interest in SUHC. As ever, the women were top‐performers and should have brought home two Premierships. In terms of club integration across the board, I think we’re getting there. It’s never easy without a proper home and facilities but we do have a great community feel and there’s strong attachment to the club. We held a planning day with the juniors this year and it felt like we have some clear vision and a plan for developing that part of the Club as well. The juniors have been part of the club now for 10 years! Only you can judge that but I hope I have been a strong Club Captain and someone who’s visible and can assist where possible. Well, on the whole and possibly apart from the Exec, I reckon we’d get full marks for this. The Exec weren’t unhappy per se, just tired. We have fairly few complaints. Conversely we get a substantial amount of positive feedback about the club and that’s very positive. The year started on a high. Why? We secured a President! And a good one at that! Returning clubman Sam Lobsey stepped up and offered to lead the Club. Sam’s return was exciting from the start, even if he promised a lot (free fees to Tamworthians – who does that?). The entire committee was ready to get on board and deliver another cracking season. Having retained Az Oman as Director of Hockey again in 2011, we looked to be in a strong position heading into the 2011 season. At the top we recruited well, we had a good solid preseason and the season was set to be strong. Most of our 2010 managers and coaches remained and were joined by some great new faces. We were able to implement many of the good 2010 season practice, do some new things and we’ve learnt more for next year. Mens In general, the men’s club fared better. There are different concerns across the grades but generally it was a sound performance and there were some notable performances throughout the year including winning a Premiership in penalty strokes, beating Briars twice in 1st grade, seeing Damian Chown score his 203rd goal for SUHC and again having more juniors come through and play in senior teams. 1st grade men started ok but after a super session on culture by Remo, the dynamics really changed for the positive. It was awesome to see its effect. The team bonded like none I have seen before at SU. They became fitter, closer, more professional and the results started to show. The likes of the Lobseys, Gray, Alexander and Bettsy were joined by some awesome talent in PK, BJ, Crikey and Brandon. It was great to see all team members get involved. What’s even better is that most are staying on in 2012! 2nd grade had a mixed year. Fitzy and Justin stepped up to coach and it was a hard task with so many new and itinerant players. There was also a variable depth of experience and talent. It’s remarkable how they kept it going with over 40 players taking to the pitch at some point in the season. Let’s be honest, that’s not good at all. However, there were some great core players ‐ Ant, Stef, Ben, Cam, Troy, Dan and Shak. International guests like Josh, Tom, Andy Ross and Frank also boosted the team. Hopefully with some new players and with the core remaining, 2012 will be a lot brighter. I enjoyed smashing Sutho 2‐0! Who scored those goals? Third grade are sometimes the unfortunate sibling to the Premier Squad. They can be pulled apart due to selections but I was really impressed with the boys here. They just missed finals and have consistently performed well over the last few seasons. Tugga led the boys well and with similar player turnover as 2nd grade, it’s a commendable job. 4th grade again made the finals and the mix of youth and experience is working well. Botty and the Vets were supported by the likes of Knowles, Gammell and Clarke. Special mention to Chowny who scored his 203rd goal this season for SUHC!! Amazing. Div 2 faced a tough year but held up well. They too have a great core group of players. Brett, Damo, Verdon and Charlie managed well and, although Div 2.1 is a tough ask, we can’t question the boys. With a few rounds remaining they certainly were in finals positions. 6th grade only just missed out. Div 4 men had another stellar year. They finished Club Champions and Marcus led his team to another Premiership. The 8th grade men’s final was nail‐biting. It was great to see the boys win on the day and I hoped so much for Marcus to slot in that winning flick. Ratty and 7th grade did well to make the finals again. It’s a shame the competition in that grade is not always balanced! Womens Pre‐season and trials were quite a shambles but once it all smoothed over and got under way, the girls maintained a top 4 position, possibly top 2 for most of the season. We retained quality players in 1st grade like Kingy, Raffi, Bennett and Jimmy and in 2nd grade Boyle, Burgess, Probert, Annalyse and VJ. Both teams welcomed and thrived with new members like Khoury, Forbes‐
Smith, Hayes and the de la Motte sisters. 1st and 2nd grade both made the semis again. 2nd grade really should have won their final but just didn’t quite turn up on GF day. However, I was impressed by their commitment and drive. Soph Boyle was certainly the stand out and her ability did not go unnoticed as she won B&F in the entire comp! Coaches Dixon and Cole have their work cut out to further this year’s achievements but I feel a Premiership is surely doable. 1st grade had a great run and it was disappointing that they didn’t quite jump that last hurdle again! 3rd grade women had a mixed year but we shouldn’t lose sight of some impressive players here. It’s also a good feeder for our strong junior girls coming through. The SU team can clearly dominate this comp and I hope the 2012 performance is stronger given previous years efforts. Our involvement in SNWHA remains strong and although we see it as great competition that caters to all, SUHC are really proving ourselves on the competitive side. The trickledown effect from Prem is happening and girls are rising to the challenge. It’s great to see the usual faces mixed in with the many many new players we welcome into the club. We must be the biggest club in the comp and all grades represent the club well. 4th and 6th grade women both made the semis and contested extremely well. Under leadership from Andy in 4th grade and Shaun and Lloyd (Joint Coaches of the Year) in 6s, there’s some real depth of talent emerging and consistently doing well. Equally, Maniac, Sri and Nakul did a top job in ensuring our women’s 5th, 7th and 8th grade played well week in, week out. My one gripe in seniors is probably the commitment factor, but hey we’re all “busy”! As the person who pulls together all the team lists each week, it’s amazing how many people think it is fine to pull out last minute or not turn up. I can’t tell you frustrating it is. I can understand unexpected events/reasons but surely players can give some warning to their coaches or managers. Juniors If we want to be a serious Sydney hockey club, then the juniors must always rank in the top 3 priorities. This year was a transition year in terms of admin. Sandy Hall valiantly stepped up to run the junior section and it’s a tough ask to follow Anne Simmons. Sandy did well although a lack of turf and reliable coaches made it a tough year. More help in the juniors from seniors would certainly make a huge difference! The club planning and strategy day for the juniors was important. As long as parents and senior members get involved, its implementation can and will have great impact. I encourage members to help out. The juniors had a mixed year but there’s some serious talent here and we are seeing their success at rep level and in our senior grades. Renee and Greta were amongst the best in 2nd grade and Nico Johnston made his Prem debut. Others such Yasmin, Henry and Ellie played in senior grades. A highlight of the season was when Sam and I stepped in to coach U/15Cs after 4 coaches deserted them. It was rewarding. For a team that I think did not win a single match, their dedication and commitment to hockey was amazing. It’s a shame really as a consistent coach would have helped this and is only another reason why we need more volunteers to support our club. Vets My involvement here is minimal. This season was perhaps our weakest for a while but, in terms of quality and depth of players, our Vets lead from the front. We have a multitude of representative players and how they manage it all – work, family, Saturday hockey ‐ is awesome! Well done to Vets C on winning their premiership. Again, I will keep encouraging their assistance in all areas of the club but I appreciate that many are busy and often when asked, offer excellent advice. Social It’s important to recognize the social part of club which helps bind us together particularly when we don’t have a pitch. Chloe (and Maddy) were excellent this year. Members are always excited about SUHC social events and the culture there is HUGE! Preso was a knockout and I think we’ve found a new home which we can return to for many years at The Refectory. In closing, thanks to the Committee, particularly Sam, Lou and Anne. It’s been a tough one but we got there and I hope we did well. Also, a big thank to Azza – not sure how you fit in everything with such ease and success. At least you’re not going anywhere soon….! Well done to all the players and thanks to the parents and supporters who proudly cheer for the mighty blue and gold. Writer John Hanc said, ‘finishing a marathon isn't just an athletic achievement. It's a state of mind; a state of mind that says anything is possible.’ Running a sports club feels no different. Certainly with SUHC, anything is possible. So, I’ve reached the finish line. I did feel bad at points. It was tough. But like a runner looking to the next marathon, I’m ready for the next hockey season. Another one awaits and next year we’ll be 105 years old … bring on 2012! Oh, and if I’ve learnt one thing about sports administration this year, it’s that clear, open and regular communication is the key! I hope my report made sense. Men’s Vice President’s Report Rob Verdon As the proverbial fly of fate hits the windscreen of destiny, so another year ends for SUHC! Again we have managed to sustain 8 men’s teams across the SHA competition, with a number of new faces joining the club alongside our seasoned campaigners. 1st Grade was skillfully coached by Chris Moylan for the 3rd year running with the support of Aaron Oman. Some fresh new imports added some real firepower to the team with Peter Kelly returning to SUHC from Spain, Chris Pelow joining from Corinthians in Dublin and young talent emerging in Brandon Lourens from Newcastle. Captained by Sam Lobsey, 1st Grade finished a respectable 8th in the Premier League table, but are showing some very promising signs for the years to come. Coaching duties for 2nd grade were undertaken by Justin Friemann and Brian Fitzpatrick from the Vet’s club. In a very difficult competition and with depleted player resources, the 2’s battled through the season but did manage some impressive results against some of the bigger clubs in the division. Jason Faulks and 3rd grade were in the mix for finals right up until the final few weeks, where a few unfortunate results put paid to an otherwise strong season. “Dad’s Army”, aka men’s 4th grade, made the finals for the 3rd year in a row, under the guidance of Mick “Bott” Irby. In a repeat of the 2010 final, they went down valiantly 2‐1 to Briars, but will no doubt be back up in the 4 again next year. In the lower grades, new recruits helped the 5’s and 6’s mount a real challenge in Division 2. Jon Marriott, Ken Stewart, Pieter Mees and Jeremy Burke all made a real impact in their first season at SUHC and will be back to give a solid foundation to the teams next year. 7’s and 8’s were once again the shining lights for SUHC throughout the season, both making the finals. The 8’s Grand Final went right down to the wire, and was eventually decided by penalty strokes. Captain and legend Marcus Tjong stepped up to take the winning stroke, which was the perfect end to an excellent season. We are sure that Marcus will be back looking for Premiership flag number 3 next year. Although we only walked away with one trophy, there is a real sense of excitement around the men’s club. We have built solid foundations across all grades to make a real impact in the next few years. If our dream of a turf comes to fruition, SUHC will certainly need to install a larger trophy cabinet!! Rob Verdon Women’s Vice President Report By Harriet Caterson Sydney University Hockey Club’s women’s side continues to prove its worth. This year we fielded eight women’s teams, three in the Sydney Women’s Hockey League (SWHL) and five in the Sydney North Women’s Hockey Association (SNWHA). Once again, we were one of a few clubs that places its top three teams in the top three Metro Leagues. SUHC was just as well represented in SNWHA with two teams in Division A, two in Division B and one in Division C. Our Premier Squad started early and strong this year under the leadership of the two Liams and the assistance of Aaron Oman, Director of Hockey. The hope in first grade was to make it once again into the Grand Final but this time to take the trophy. The girls managed fourteen wins out of eighteen matches in the normal season. After this very consistent season, they unfortunately lost in the preliminary finals against Moorebank. It was a close game, the score line at 2‐1. Our second grade, under Liam Cole, was the only women’s team to make it into the Grand Finals. This is the third time in so many years the girls have achieved this. This team performed consistently throughout the whole season, even managing to win 7‐1 in a semi final against the UTS 2nd grade. Unfortunately the girls finished their season 2nd, losing out to Macarthur 3‐1 after having scored in the first minute. Congratulations to both Liams and all the premier squad girls. Finally, our 3rd grade under the leadership of Scott Laird then Chris Pelow took out the seventh position in the Metro League 3 table. SUHC Women look forward to further success in this competition and truly believe that a Sydney University team in the Metro League 4 is well overdue. Sydney University Hockey Women achieved further success in the Sydney Women’s Hockey League with two of our players being nominated for SWHL awards. Sophie Boyle was awarded Best and Fairest for the entire 2nd Metro League. Sophie managed to play most of the season for both first and second grade! Similarly, Nina Khoury was a runner‐up for the Loretta Dorman medal for Best and Fairest in Metro League 1. Nina has represented Australia in the under 21s and Australia A level and also managed to score an 23 goals this season taking out the perpetual award for Top Goal Scorer Women’s at Presentation Night. Our lower grades continued to display the passion they are known for. Our 4th Grade, under Andy James, had a very successful season managing 4th place in Division A. Unfortunately they missed out on the Grand Final, losing out 4‐1 to the division champions Mirrabooka. Our 5th Grade under Ian McMaster placed 8th in the same division. Our 6th Grade team had an even more triumphant season placing 3rd in Division B. The girls lost in the semi‐final to Barker (BOGs) 2‐1. Shaun Knowles and Lloyd Setter, 6th Grade coaches, were awarded Coaches of the Year at the SUHC 2011 Presentation night. Our 7th Grade, coached by Sri Puthi, just missed out on preliminary finals (by 0.3 points). Although there was no preliminary final between two Sydney University teams, Division B was certainly dominated by the girls in blue and gold. Finally, 8th Grade, coached by Nakul Parmar, placed 10th in Division C. Despite no titles, the presence of SUHC women in the SNWHA competition is certainly felt. I hope the lower grade girls continue their success and take out grand finals in 2012. Junior Vice President’s Report Sandy Hall 2011 was a year of change for Sydney University Hockey Club Juniors. The first change was coaching‐related – we appointed Liam Cole as our new Junior Coaches Convener. Liam was supported by four coaches at Monday night training, namely, Lizzy McAdam (U11 team coach), Ed Blight (U13 co‐coach), Zoe Shepherd and Izzy Wray (U15C co‐coaches). We were also pleased to have four Club Seniors/Vets who were match‐day coaches: Dougal Alexander (U15 Metro), David Henderson (U17B), Ryan Betts (U18 girls) and Philip Price (U13 co‐coach). Thanks to all the coaches for their efforts in not only developing the players’ skills but also showing them how to have fun, play as a team and be good sports. This year, we had 80 field hockey players representing Sydney Uni, and a further 32 who played indoor only, ranging in age from 7 to 18 years. We also had a number of junior players playing in the senior men’s and women’s teams this year as well as junior teams. It is important for the Club as a whole that our older juniors continue to play for the Junior Club when they start playing in senior teams. These older juniors are role models for the younger players and the Junior Club relies heavily on their presence at training sessions and games to mentor and develop the younger players following them through the ranks. It is also important that the Club recognizes that its Junior Club is its most significant source of players for the future. To that end, the Executive held a Juniors Planning Day on the 21st of August. The afternoon allowed an open and frank exchange of views and ideas with a wide range of people who had various expectations of, and involvement in, the Club. It was agreed by the group that the three key issues that need to be addressed in the short term are: 
Formation of a Juniors Committee to share the job of administering the Juniors club and to plan and implement strategies for future growth. 
Coaching. While the ideal scenario would be to have one skilled coach available for Monday night training and Friday/Saturday matches for the entire season, it was recognised that this would be very hard to achieve. It was agreed that we should aim for two coaches (or a coach and a coaching assistant) per team. We would look to recruit from current players in the seniors and vets teams as well as hockey‐playing parents (as occurs in other clubs). We plan to hold ‘coach the coaches’ training later this year, and have the Coaches’ Convener meet with coaches to map out the year’s training schedule in advance of the season. 
Player recruitment. It was recognised that, given the current size of the Juniors club, each team consisted of players with a wide range of skills and experience. It was felt that good coaching would play a part in resolving this matter. In addition, involvement in other activities (either mandatory school sport or other winter sport) meant that many teams were left with insufficient players each week, sometimes resulting in forfeits. It was agreed that we will begin collecting information about player involvement in other activities to help inform coaches and managers upfront when it comes to team formation. A medium term objective is to grow numbers to help with both sides of this matter. The medium to longer term objectives/initiatives were as follows: 2011/12: Establish the Junior Sub Committee. Set up junior recruitment program. 2013: Hold Junior Elite Athlete Sessions with the Junior Coaching Co‐ordinator (as is currently done in the Senior Club). Take over the running of the SUSF School Holiday Hockey Camps ‐ recruitment of coaches, promotion of camps, curriculum, venue, etc. 2014: Align the Junior Elite Athlete Program (EAP) with the Senior EAP (Pathways). 2015: Enter two teams in each age division in relevant competitions. Develop a U17 Sydney Uni only Metro team (not combined with another club, as is currently the case). If required under SHA development criteria, be in a position to field an U17 boys’ team. One further change this year. After a number of years in the role, Anne Simmons stepped down from the position of Juniors Vice President. I thank Anne, on behalf of all parents, for her hard work and dedication in the past. I personally thank Anne for her support during this year of transition. Finally, we also thank Rowan Johnston and Stephen Hall for representing the Junior Club at North Area Junior Hockey Association meetings. Winter Competition In 2011, we entered five Sydney Uni teams and two composite teams with Gordon North Sydney in the following competitions: U11s Division B – North Area JHA competition U13s Division A – North Area JHA competition U15s Division C – North Area JHA competition U17s Division B – North Area JHA competition U15s Metro competition U17s Metro competition U18 girls Division B of the SNWHA competition Three teams made it through to their respective finals rounds, with two others finishing just outside the top 4 in their Division. The Under 11s showed impressive form throughout the 2011 season with 9 wins, 1 draw & 2 losses from 12 games. They scored an amazing tally of 52 goals for, 9 goals against, to give them a whopping 43 goal difference. Despite their enthusiasm and their position at the top of the ladder for the majority of the season, they lost their preliminary final by just one goal! The U13s were pushed up to Division A this year (from Division C last year), which gave the players some challenging matches throughout the season. The U15C team had a great core team, but due to low player numbers, had challenges of their own. The U15 Metro team thumped Briars 4‐0 in their last match to finish 5th in an extremely strong comp. This year North Area JHA introduced a mixed U17 competition, and the U17 Metro comp also moved to a mixed competition. Both teams played in the semi‐finals. The U18 girls worked hard in their SNWHA competition. Well done to all teams, and thank you to our coaches and team managers. Without guidance from the coaches and support and co‐ordination by team managers, the teams would not take the field each week. Indoor Competitions This year the Club fielded 2 teams in the Term 1 comp at Balgowlah and Term 4 saw the junior Club enter 7 teams in the Mosman and Ryde competitions. We held a pre‐season indoor training session, where a small number of new players got some intensive one‐on‐one coaching by some of our Senior players. Thanks to the team managers for co‐ordination of indoor during the year. Representative Players While a great many of our Junior players enjoy hockey for the skills they acquire and the social side of being part of a team, we also have a number of talented players who go on to represent SJHA and other teams in Hockey NSW State Championships, and beyond. 2011 saw players selected for various representative teams including Sydney and NSW teams in outdoor hockey, as well as Sydney and NSW in indoor. Congratulations to all those players who reached this outstanding level in their hockey. Field hockey representatives are listed below. As always, this was a great opportunity to thank our coaches and parents for their support during the year. But more importantly, it was a chance to recognise our Junior players and applaud their achievement during the season. We continued to receive strong support from Sydney University Sport & Fitness and, together with fees from our members and income from sales of uniforms, our total revenue reached nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Our total outgoings were almost equally substantial. Although we are a sporting club, we are in many ways equivalent to a sizeable small business, and it is essential that we collect income and control expenses like a prudent business, not a social club. Our major costs are turf fees, HNSW fees and association charges and these all increased ahead of inflation in 2011. Although we managed to hold our own Club fees at the same level for the third straight year, we are pleased to have recorded a break‐even result. The major administrative issues that we faced in 2011 related to the Club registration process, maintenance of the Club’s player database and the HNSW registration process. These processes took a considerable amount of time and effort to sort out during the year. We have developed a more robust player database and will continue to work with SUSF to hopefully improve the Club registration process in 2012. Our ability to collect our revenues and avoid being overcharged for player numbers at the association level depends on us getting this right. The way we have structured the sale of the Club’s uniforms continues to be a great success. Our SUHC uniforms are readily available at Just Hockey at Homebush throughout the year and we thank Just Hockey for assisting us in this regard. They are also great sponsors of the Club and I encourage you all to support them whenever you can. In closing, I would like to thank Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness for their great support during the year. I would also like to thank everyone who has assisted the club from an administrative point of view, with special mention to Maddy Roche who, as Administrative Assistant, has shouldered a huge amount of the work associated with running the Club. I look forward to collecting your fees in 2012. Anne Australian University Games Women Harriet Caterson This year, Sydney University Hockey Club took a team of 16 women to the Gold Coast for the 2011 AUGs. The team was a motley assortment of girls with representatives from nearly every team in the club’s women’s side. After the mayhem of the SUHC Presentation Night the evening before, the women’s team turned up at Sydney Airport a little bleary‐eyed and somewhat worse for wear. In a dramatic turn of events, one plane had been hit by lightning meaning a much longer day of travel for some of our teammates. Similarly, another team member had managed to book her flights for the wrong day and as a result had a commute from Brisbane to look forward to. Despite all this, our team arrived safe and sound and settled into their rooms that evening. Social shirts, stubby holders and playing singlets were distributed and Bernadette, our mascot, was superglued together. The first two days of competition loomed ahead of us and we had just heard news that our Division 1 matches would be 70 minutes long. Our women were placed in Pool B against teams such as Monash and Edith Cowan University. The first match against Monash saw the girls on shaky footing – only just getting to know each other’s styles, positions and in some cases, names. There was general confusion as three members of the team were difficult to distinguish as their hair colour, height and hockey boots were identical. Despite the wobbly start, the girls managed to pull off a 3‐1 win against Monash. Bernadette and Hercules were watching over us, along with a number of members of the SUSF staff. We continued to win the next two matches, ending top of our Pool. The days were long, with games set at opposite ends of the schedule. By Wednesday, we were running off little sleep but still managed to beat UTS under the turf lights. It was midweek and we were undefeated. The next day saw us playing Newcastle where every single member of the team bar one managed to score a goal. It was a victory of 16‐1 against the Newcastle ‘Seapigs’. This set us up to play old rivals and usual Hockey dominators – UWA. With their porcelain mascot having been smashed earlier, the UWA girls turned up, ponytails still bobbing. SUHC players such as Emma Scriven and the captain Annabel Probert led us to a 3‐2 victory putting us in the Gold Medal Final for the next day. It was a dramatic day and night, considering it was also our team captain’s birthday. Finally we met on the Friday, many towing suitcases behind us. The competition was running behind schedule with so many teams finishing in a draw and needing overtime. We switched turfs and began preparing for our gold medal clash against Melbourne University. After winning silver medals for the past few years, there was a certain amount of desperation amongst the team. It was a long game in the heat and unfortunately in the last four minutes of the match, Melbourne managed a goal. Our stellar centre half Sophie Boyle even took a stick to the face and came straight back on after wadding her bloody nose with tissue. We couldn’t score, but played tough hockey to the last seconds. Although we took away the silver (once again), the SUHC Women’s AUGs team had an excellent week on the Gold Coast. Friends were made across the whole club, with promises to reunite very soon. Congratulations must go to Emma Scriven and Sophie Boyle who managed Green and Gold selections. Also, a big well done to anyone who managed to come away from that week with their voice intact and in good health. Men
Lloyd Setter The week began with a fresh faced group of 18 young men setting off to the Gold Coast for some Surf, Sun and hopefully Success. We had high hopes for the competition as we had assembled one of the strongest teams in recent years. Our first day began with a game against Adelaide University, runners up at the previous Australian University Games. It was a tight fought game. We had the majority of possession and chances on goal, but their goal keeper kept them in the game, which ended in a one all draw. However, our spirits were high after this draw as we knew we were the better team and that we would only improve as the week went on. Our second game came that night against fierce rivals Melbourne University. Once again it was a very close game with both teams having many opportunities. Unfortunately we went down 4 ‐3. Our final pool game was against Monash University, another team with a Goal keeper that saved nearly everything that came his way. Monash got lucky with many of their goals coming from quick counter attacks. Unfortunately we went down 7‐3 in a demoralising loss but in the back of our minds we knew we were a much better team than our results had shown. We had one of the strongest teams in AUG history and we owed it to the Club and past and present Uni games legends to go further than this in the competition. After a night of team bonding and a few strategy changes, we came fresh faced to our Quarter final match up against the University of Western Australia. Because we had finished last in our pool, we were drawn up against the winner of Pool B, UWA. UWA have a long and successful history at AUG’s and had previously not lost a single game in seven years. But we didn’t let this faze us as we were excited to be the team to bring to an end the dynasty of UWA hockey at AUG’s. We started the game strongly and went into half time drawn at 1 all. This time, it was our Goal Keeper, Shaun Knowles, who saved consecutive attempts at goal. We came out even harder in the second half and were beginning to look more and more like the team we knew we could be. An amazing goal from Pete Kelly from the base line opened the flood gates as we ran over the top of UWA, beating them convincingly 5‐2, to the loud cheers of many onlookers privileged to see the day UWA was knocked out of AUG medal contention for the first time in decades. To further rub salt into the wounds of UWA, their mascot the “Tonka Truck” was also stolen, much to Smokey’s delight. We may have finished last in our pool but we knew after our emphatic win over UWA that we could take out the first gold medal for Sydney University Men’s Hockey team since 1959. It was our time to get the monkey off the back and we came into our semi‐final against Melbourne University full of confidence. Melbourne had previously beaten us in the pool games, but we knew we had the team to beat them. Once again it was a close game, but our class shone through, winning 4‐2, putting us through to the gold medal match against Monash. The Gold medal match began as a very heated affair with Pete Kelly being continuously hit off the ball. However, he let his skills do the talking, by beating multiple Monash players in a mesmerising run through the attacking D to score an amazing goal. Shortly after this and still very early in the game, we were struck with a potentially devastating blow when our star attacking striker Brendan O’Connor tore his hamstring and would not return for the remainder of the match. Despite this setback we did what any great Sydney Uni Hockey team would do and rallied to dominate the game even more scoring 2 more goals, to go into half time leading 3‐0. We started the second half strongly, creating many opportunities only to be denied at the last moment by Monash’s goal keeper. Monash began to lift as they knew we were determined to win our first gold medal in over 50 years. We defended heroically down to the last minute, winning an inspirational game 3‐2. Adam Imer was awarded man of the match and we later had three players named in the Green and Gold team for 2011: Peter Kelly, Rhys Gray and Brendan O’Connor. The Gold Medal topped off an amazing week had by all 18 men and what a terrific bunch of blokes it was! With a strong group of both young and older players, hopefully we can continue this Australian Uni Games success, after getting the monkey off our back and winning the teams first Gold Medal since 1959. Social Report Chloe Hardwick Jones 2011 was a dynamic year on the social front for SUHC, as many new members have come onto the scene while old stalwarts continue to form the backbone of social traditions. New Players’ Night in April officially heralded the beginning of the season and it was a great way to welcome all newbies to the club and show them what we’re all about. Bright yellow headbands proclaiming “SUHC virgin” easily branded the new members of the club and became the hottest piece of clothing to have on the night. The party started at Coopers and headed to Zanzibar later, with all new players quickly catching onto the SUHC partying style. A ‘new vs. old’ boat race was easily won by the ‘old’ members of the club – leaving new players with the bar set high for future endeavours. As always, the Pub Crawl, held in May was probably the rowdiest night of the year, with over 130 people trawling the streets of Newtown, Erskineville and Camperdown decked out in sky blue T‐
shirts proclaiming “SUHC is crawling … so get on your knees!”. Once again, the Erskineville hotel proved a welcoming venue, while the decision to visit Zanzi later in the night wasn’t brilliant, and the 11pm negotiations with the bouncers to try and get us in didn’t do much to help the situation. New pit‐stop, the Sando in Newtown, also came to the party this year, providing entertainment and an amazing nut machine! Club days were unfortunately few this year, with scattered draws working against us, particularly for lower grade women. We held a men’s club day in June, and a Metro women’s club day in July, as well as a Junior club day in June. These were all well attended, with the usual banter and cheering leading many teams to rousing wins. These were also times for valuable fundraising activities, with raffles and guessing competitions raising several hundred dollars for the club. Just don’t ask Andy Andy Elton about the hockey bag situation… As the season began to draw to a close, SUHC members showed they still knew how to party, despite the colder weather. The Coopers hosted us in July for a mid‐season “Graffiti” party, where party‐goers wore plain white shirts ready to be attacked with marker pens. As could probably be expected, some of the slogans were less than savory, which perhaps explained the unwillingness of the Zanzi bouncers to let us in once Coopers had closed. The Coopers also hosted us for VP night at the end of August, shouting us a fair amount of free beer and champagne – always a recipe for a rowdy night. The night continued on at Kelly’s, where several club members were sighted as late as 5am, although Chris Pelow unsurprisingly got kicked out well before then. The only event left was our annual SUHC Presentation Night, this year held at the stunning heritage‐listed Holme Refectory at Sydney Uni in September. It was a memorable night, with some emotional farewells to Club President Sam Lobsey and women’s stalwart Jemima Bartlett as they fittingly won the Len Smith Club person of the year award before their impending move to Tamworth. Ben Chiarella did a fantastic job as MC, and Dan Paech, aka DJ StickyBee, provided the amazing tunes. Bar Broadway again hosted our afterparty, with many powering on till the early hours of the morning. It has been a fantastic year socially, with everyone excitedly looking forward to doing it all again in 2012. There were a number of changes that occurred following my 1st year in the role. Some of these were forced upon us, with a change in coaches for both the 2nd grade Men and Women, as well as a new Junior Coaching Director joining the club. Other changes were voluntary and deemed necessary after experiences and lessons learned during the 2010 season. More lessons have been learned in 2011, these have been noted and will be implemented in 2012, under someone else’s guidance. Generally, we judge the success of a season on results and, for the 2nd year in a row, these were mixed. The premier men failed to feature in the semi finals with both sides finishing just below the middle of the table. Whilst I didn’t work with many of the other grades, there were some good results with 8th grade winning the premiership and 4th grade losing in controversial circumstances to Briars. Last year I said, “The Women’s club has fantastic depth for years to come, and went extremely close to having the top 2 sides feature in grand finals. In future years, this will happen and I can see them being the premier club in Sydney as some of the younger players develop further”. Unfortunately we finished in the exact same spot as we did last year, bowing out in the Preliminary Final in 1st grade and losing the 2nd grade grand final. However, I still believe that the club will be the premier women’s club for many years to come and I hope that the girls continue to maintain a professional attitude to everything they do. Winning premierships makes the weekly commitment to training and the club worth it. It was a little disappointing that attendances at women’s training dropped as the season went on, as this was something that wasn’t an issue in 2010. Part of this relates to training times, which is something we have to live with, whilst we don’t have our own turf. If we can maintain the high professionalism and commitment throughout the season, then results will go our way and premierships will arrive. I look forward to seeing both premier women’s sides in the finals in 2012. Although the Men’s premier club has lacked depth the past two years, the club has grown and improved as the season went on. One of the big issues has been the turnover of players from one year to the next. I am confident that this issue is getting better, with many players from 2011 committed to 2012. In my two years at the club, we have had good results against every team in the competition except Moorebank. If we can get some continuity and consistency then the premier sides will no doubt perform well, and feature in the top 4 in seasons to come. There are some good young players at the club, a good group of older heads, and some great players that have been involved with wins over the traditionally top teams in the competition. The experience that these guys will bring forward in years to come will be invaluable. The attitude and camaraderie of the 1st grade men’s side in particular this year was first class. This wins premierships guys, so I hope you maintain the same attitude in 2012. A lot of credit for this should go to Chris Moylan, Sam Lobsey and Mark Crennan. You have worked hard to create an environment where this can occur, and have got a buy in from the side. Thanks for your efforts. I have really enjoyed the last two years with the club. I’d especially like to thank all of those that have been on the board the last two years. Special thanks to Andy Elton, Sam Lobsey, Anne Simmons, Rob Verdon and Harriett Caterson who I have had hundreds of discussions with during my two years at the club. The work that these guys and the rest of the board do for the club is phenomenal, so where possible be sure to help them out if you can. Thanks also to the Men’s and Women’s premier coaches, who I seem to have seen every day for the last two hockey seasons. I think we have a great group of coaches here, and I hope that they all continue working towards that elusive Premier Premiership. All the best for 2012. After building on the successes of 2010, the premier squad really wanted to set the benchmark higher again in 2011 to establish Sydney University Hockey Club as one of the strongest women’s clubs in NSW. The First Grade Squad was built mainly from the premier squad from 2010. A notable exception was Hollie Webster who was offered an AIS scholarship and moved to Perth to train. Hollie has since been named in the Hockeyroos Squad. Two new additions from Tasmania also made their debut for the Club, Georgie Forbes‐Smith and Nina Khoury. Nina proved her worth by being the leading goal scorer with 23 goals. Nina was also a finalist for the Loretta Dorman Medal for Metro League 1 Best and Fairest. Strong competition for places in the first grade team ensured good numbers throughout pre season and a solid platform was set leading into the opening match. The enthusiasm and commitment shown in the pre season proved to be the difference against an ever‐improving Gordon side in the opening round. Seven different players scored, a record for first grade in the 7‐0 thumping. The strong start to the season continued with a convincing 2‐0 victory in the second round against a star studded Briars team. Sitting in first place with eight wins and only one loss to Moorebank after the completion of the first round of matches set the team up for the second half of the season to complete our goal of a top two finish. Unfortunately the usual representative commitments and University holidays meant we were really stretched across the board in premier squad. This lead to two narrow losses in round 10 and 12 which cost us in the end for our run for a minor premiership. After the University break, first grade got back on track cementing their place as a real threat to the competition with a 1‐1 draw against top placed Moorebank who have set the benchmark in Metro League with the last five consecutive premierships. The confidence gained from the result gave real belief within the team and we proceeded to win the next seven matches leading into the finals. The stage was set for finals with only 3 points separating the top three teams and a showdown in the major semi against Esquires. Going into the match, Sydney Uni had won the last five meetings with top placed Esquires. This gave the squad real confidence that another win was within reach and the first grand final appearance for the Club in Metro League 1 was possible. Unfortunately, due to some SWHL technical rulings, two of our key strikers, Jamaya Ferguson and Cara Simpson, who both represented NSW U21s in 2011 were ruled ineligible for finals. It was a tough setback for the team given Jamaya had been plagued with an injury coupled with glandular fever for the second half of the season. The uphill battle continued when Nina Khoury was called into an Australian training camp and missed the first week of finals. Three of our most potent strikers out meant we really struggled in front of goal against a resilient Esquires side eager to play out a draw. We were unable to score and the 0‐0 result meant that Esquires progressed straight through to the Grand Final and we faced Moorebank in the second week. Nina was available for the clash and the game proved to be a highlight as both teams attacked each other from the onset. Again our inability up front to convert our opportunities proved too costly in such a big match and we narrowly went down 1‐2. This was a very hard way to go out for the team but another learning curve for the young and ever improving players. As the squad grows each year and the young players continue to establish themselves in the top league in NSW, a premiership is now a realistic goal for our squad and we will continue to work hard and enjoy more success in 2012. Liam Cole The season began following a long pre‐season with the Sydney University Premier squad looking in good shape. Both squads appeared to be very strong and both with genuine premiership aspirations. The first game against Glebe was hard fought. However a comfortable 2‐0 victory proved the SU ML2 team was once again a force to be reckoned with. The next three games saw three more wins and, after the first four round games, SU was on the top of the ladder in ML1 and ML2. Round five was the team’s first real test, eventual minor premiers Moorebank edging a close game 3‐1. Despite creating enough chances to win the game, we were unable to find the back of the net, a trend that troubled us throughout the year. Back to winning ways in round six, seven and eight, followed by three successive draws meant the ML2 team went into dreaded July in 3rd place on the ladder. Having lost former Irish international Helen Cathcart overseas and former ACT Institute of Sport Representative, Karen McGrath, to a season ending injury, the last thing we needed was the mass exodus of players from the premier squad who travelled overseas or back home during University holidays. This couldn’t have been more evident than in round 13 when no fewer than eight players doubled up from 2nd grade in the earlier 1st grade game. A 4‐0 defeat at the hands of rivals UTS certainly the team’s lowest point of the season. A 2‐0 loss to Moorebank in the next round, despite being disappointing, sparked a response from the squad and the coaching staff. Players returned from University holidays and everybody in contention for a place in the team was made aware their attitude and commitment to training must improve. Key performance indicators were set and expectations communicated. Round 15 saw the introduction of NSW U15 player Greta Hayes and she made an immediate impact, with a 4‐0 win over St George signaling the start of what was going to be an exciting run of games for ML2. At half time the following week, however, things were not looking all that promising as the team trailed 2‐0 to youthful Sutherland. A 9am game, the day after revue celebrations, certainly told on one or two players. But, after half time, a different team appeared on the pitch. With fellow premiership hopefuls Macarthur watching on, the girls stepped up and with minutes remaining scored the winner, a come from behind 3‐2 win which showed great determination and character. With confidence sky high going into the penultimate round game, a win would guarantee a third place finish. An emphatic 11‐2 win against Baulkham Hills demonstrated the team’s desire to win a premiership. In the final round game of the season against second place Macarthur, only pride was at stake. Both teams knew a win would be a huge confidence boost going into finals. In a game between two very evenly matched teams, we emerged as 1‐0 winners. In the semi‐final we came up against UTS. Following the embarrassment of the 4‐0 loss in the round games, the team had a point to prove and did so in no uncertain terms. A comfortable 7‐1 win showed the dominant University in ML2 was indeed Sydney. The preliminary final was a much a closer affair. We lined up against minor premiers Moorebank, a team we had lost to twice during the regular season. The game was played at an extraordinary pace as neither team was willing to give an inch. Despite creating several chances, including a penalty stroke, we were unable to find a goal. After 70 minutes, the game finished 0‐0. The first half of drop‐off extra time also ended goalless. The game looked destined for penalty strokes when Annalyse Lister scored a trademark reverse stick goal with five minutes remaining to send the team into the grand final. In a repeat of the 2010 Grand Final we came up against Macarthur, despite being unbeaten against them during the season we knew we were in for a tough afternoon. Thirty seconds into the game we were 1‐0 up. This however was to be our last contribution, the goal appeared to unsettle us and spark Macarthur into life. We seemed nervous and made several uncharacteristic mistakes. Unfortunately, we never recovered, the final score Macarthur 3 : Sydney University 1. In conclusion 2011 is a season ML2 can be proud of. Despite falling at the final hurdle, we overcame many difficulties and still came within touching distance of winning a premiership. Our captain, Sophie Boyle, was awarded the best player in ML2, a fantastic achievement when you consider how many games she played having already played the majority of an ML1 game. We experienced several ups and downs throughout the year with training, double ups, injuries and absences. However the turnaround in attitude and desire from round 16 was a testament to the club and all the ML2 players. We stepped up when it mattered which made it all the more disappointing we couldn’t go all the way. Third Grade Chris Pelow This year, Sydney Uni Women’s ML3 had a merry‐go‐round of a season with many changing and departing faces. First up for team shout outs, we have Coach Scott who left us for German pretzels but passed us onto the trusty skills of Coach “I drag flick for 1st grade” Pelow. Then from the back, Super Steph Do Carmo in goals, Wendy “token Asian” Au and Sara “Scott thinks my surname’s Sports Lived” Nolan. Our midfield consisted of Danni “dating the coach” Hudson, Bee “the Rock” Lestrange, the first of our lovely Anna’s Miss Novak, Jacinta “Calvin” Klein and our three U15 superstars Saskia, Ellie and Greta. And up front, we had Anna “Braz” Bray, Hester “Dutchy” Ejikmans, Hannah “Energiser Bunny” Gordon and Georgia “G‐Wet” Wettenhall. Special mentions to the gorgeous 4th graders who filled in for us week in and week out, Belinda “where did she go” Lewis, Beth “I like to talk” Scott and Sports Lived imports, Izzy and Zoe. Our season had a scorching start with Syd Uni ML3 being undefeated for the first 5 rounds. Things were looking up as we were comfortably maintaining a top two position in our division. Then slowly but surely, our team started to drop off like those little green bottles in that annoying song. Bel, Sara, Beth, Hester, Bee, Izzy and Zoe all departed us within a few weeks and with uni holidays and sickness hitting the squad, we discovered just how much grit we really had as a team. Things weren’t always pretty (quite clearly I mean the hockey, not the players) and we even managed to sneak in a late season win over top four team and inter‐uni rival UNSW with a trim 10 players on the pitch. Under Chris’ watchful Irish eye, we toughed it out to the end with a tonne of help from the ever‐generous 4th graders – a big thank you. It wouldn’t have been a Sydney Uni Hockey season without plenty of laughs and smiles along the way and the 2011 season was no different. We also learnt a lot hockey and non‐hockey related, let us share: 

I guess it would be fair to say the best team this year representing Sydney Uni was 4 grade women. Bold statement that can be backed up with nothing but solid facts. Fact 1: we had the best goal keeper in the competition. Leash played like a super star all season and who needs to be ready more than 1 minute before the start of a game? Fact 2 : Emma and Kate in the back line, the most committed players for the team constantly turning up to training. However being such a good team I think they only touched the ball at training and during the warm ups. Fact 3: best half line in the universe. Did everyone see Rachel continuously running and yelling through the season? On the field she didn’t stop, so I guess she earned a training session off to watch a DVD. She was supported by Katie (when she wasn’t blowing up plane engines), Sarah B (tough gig having two Sarah B’s in one team), Les (when she wasn’t attending schooner school, too soon?) and Nikki (Nikki the ghost). Fact 4: What can’t be said about the strength of our inners? I think they did more running then Rachel. El, AJ, Sarah and Prim, I think these girls were yelled at more than anyone else in the team to keep moving. The only time they weren’t yelled at is when AJ was in France. El who never seem to recover from UNI games, Sarah 50% of the time because she was hanging out with Nikki I guess and Prim because she played every position through the season expect goal keeper. There is only one bunch of players left and that is the forwards. The sisters Hayley and Hannah who stayed consistent all season, well expect Hannah who nearly died about 16 times, Beth who battled through injuries all season and Dre who played nearly as many positions as Prim... on the field of cause. Special thanks goes to El for being captain and getting coaches award, Prim for being social coordinator, Rachel for getting players player and Emma for playing the most games through the season. Also thanks to all the girls from other grades who filled in when we were short of numbers. For the coach, it was a rewarding experience to coach such a great bunch of girls. Everyone had a great season on and off the field and I look forward to next year. Look out Mirrabooka! Fifth Grade Ian McMaster The 2011 season started well for the women’s with a very strong turn out to trials proving to make selections for the coaches very difficult. A high number of girls of similar ability joining the club resulted in the decision to field squads of 16, thus allowing for the usual losses of players throughout the season. We had a very difficult start to the season coming up against 3 of the top 4 teams in the first 3 weeks. We proved to be a very competitive team with Bree Bailey, Edwina Paul, Isabelle Meere and Madeleine Roche solid through the centre and inner channels. I believed that we could push for a place in the top 6 of the competition, with a position in the finals a definite possibility. We also proved to be a very strong team defensively with Ainsley Hayden and Annabelle McGee orchestrating from the back, with brilliant support from Chloe Hardwick Jones, Felicity Nethery, Gillian Cronk and Phoebe Clare through the halves. The team often conceded only one or two goals each game. At the beginning of the season, we had problems converting opportunities up front as players got used to each other and playing in a new position. We fell into difficulties early just as we were beginning to gel with goal keeper Connie Mort being injured, and out for the season from round 2. This was very frustrating for her and the team. Finding a keeper week in week out was difficult and a big thanks to all the girls who jumped in goal to help out. We got our first win on the board in round 4 and then followed with 2 draws against strong teams. Again our inability to finish would impact and drop us down the ladder. We then suffered a 5‐1 loss in round 7 as we had no keeper turn up to the game with the 9am game at Pennant Hills being difficult at the best of times. From here on in, our form was mixed, especially through university holidays where we had a numbers of players away for extended periods. We also had a number of injuries ‐ some minor whilst others were season ending. Sophie Lancaster broke her collarbone as she was finding some great form up front. The injury required surgery and meant missing her annual ski trip. I think this spurred the team on and they came from behind to beat Manly. From there, we were consistent with only one loss in the last 5 rounds. It was great to see the player development and this was particularly evident later in the season as we had the less experienced players, Carla Brown and Antonia Wettenhall, start to consistently get best and fairest points. I think the diverse range of experience we had within the team helped in player development and work ethic as a team especially at training ‐ with the coach being away more than preferable due to work commitments. We ended the season with great camaraderie and I can see a number of the girls’ skills developing into the future with possible positions in higher grades. This was really demonstrated in the best and fairest points with final scores only being decided in the final round game. Thanks to all the girls and farewell to Chloe Hardwick‐Jones who has put in effort on and off the field over the last few years and will be off overseas for work. After three weeks of trials and play offs, sixteen talented girls were selected to compete in the women’s 6th grade team, being coached by two of the club’s finest. After surviving 24 games of hockey together and receiving six nominations for awards at presentation night this season, the success that this team has achieved over the last few months has been nothing short of outstanding. Competition throughout the season was fierce with a constant battle between Sydney Uni, Barker Old Girls and Hornsby. We met twice with each team during the season taking out one win and suffering a loss against each, so it was clear to see that the season was going to be a close one. Every week the team not only played hard, but trained hard. Together, the girls proved to be the most dedicated team showing nothing but grit, guts and determination every Sunday in a showcase of skill. Every time the team got together, whether training, playing or socially, there was never shortage of laughs. Whether it was Kirsty’s never‐ending chants on and off the field, Tayla’s goldfish like antics, or Lloyd and Shaun’s constant competition for who was the better coach, the team was always excited and even during the most daunting drill, would be having fun. The final round of the season saw the most anticipated game against our archrivals, Macquarie University. It was a tough game, with Macquarie Uni fighting for their last chance at finals hockey and Sydney for a spot in the top 2. Despite an abundance of supporters in the stands barracking for Sydney, things didn’t go our way with a one nil win to Macquarie Uni. So, with only three losses to our name for the whole season, we approached finals coming in at third place on the ladder. This meant a highly sought after rematch against Macquarie Uni. Coaches suited up, revenge on our agenda and determination in our bones. And to no surprise the dish was served, coming out with a two nil win and a very satisfied group of sixth graders. The qualifying finals were next against Barker Old Girls in a sudden death match. Despite putting up a good fight however, a close game ended our season with a 2‐1 loss. However, I know that each girl came into the change rooms knowing they had put in 110% and should be proud of the effort they put in throughout the season. Looking back on the season, the success and achievement of the team was truly accentuated at presentation night where the team received many nominations across the night. Courtney Owens, our reliable center half, was nominated for women’s MVP for her superior stick skills, endurance and overall strength and ability as the backbone of the team. Leah Hockley, our trusty fully back was nominated for best defender. It is safe to say her strong tackles and pounding hits up the field were pivotal in every game. Harriet Caterson, our captain was nominated for Social person of the year; a girl whose undying love and commitment to our team and for the club, lifted our spirits every game. And last but not least our two coaches, Shaun and Lloyd were nominated and won best coach(es) of the year! However receiving the award for being Sydney Uni Hockey’s best coaches for the 2011 season, doesn’t do justice to the commitment and dedication both Shaun and Lloyd put into this team over the year. It would be every Monday night that these two talented young men would turn up with carefully planned, fun and skillful drills that would turn our one hour training session into two. Despite pouring rain on the coldest of winter nights, 6th grade women would be there in numbers ready to train hard, knowing our coaches would be too. The success achieved over the season is definitely attributed both Shaun and Lloyd’s encouragement and motivation to keep us training hard and determined to win. I can’t forget to mention their pre‐game and half time spiels, which gave us that extra push of determination to finish with a win. It’s no secret that the loss in the semi’s was overwhelmingly disappointing. However the season that was had, was the extremely rewarding. Sitting in the change room after the game comforted by an esky of UDL’s compliments of our super coaches made everything feel slightly better. Every girl put in 110% every week and was extremely committed to the team. It was our Mad Monday celebrations that ended a great season giving our Camel Cup nomination for most social team of the year its justice. A big thank you to Shaun and Lloyd for their time and support. We were not always the easiest of teams to deal with but nothing you both did went un‐noticed and was much appreciated. You made everyone in the team’s favorite days of the week be Monday and Sundays. We are all counting down to next season and can’t wait to dominate on the field! Sydney Uni!’ Trishika Ramrakha Seventh Grade Sri Puthi With pre‐season training, trial games and squad selections starting a month out from the start of the season, excitement and anticipation were high. It was clear that selections would be tricky with the large number of players and more expected to trickle down from higher grades early in the season. The start of the season was eagerly, yet anxiously, awaited as the goalkeeper position was still vacant. The team however started in low gear, with the first four games yielding no wins and two draws. Round 5 brought about change, with teams being somewhat confirmed, and we earned our first win in glorious style. A goal from a short corner awarded after the final whistle, added 2 points to our tally. The win shifted the team into gear, winning the next rounds convincingly. At the halfway point in the season, we were sitting comfortably in the 5th spot on the table. Rounds 12‐15 coincided with uni holidays, resulting in us playing with only one or no substitutes. However, thanks to players doubling from other grades, we were able to secure precious points, albeit with narrow goal margins. With three rounds of the regular season left, our position remained unchanged ‐ we were still on 5th as our goal ratio was lower. Two consecutive wins against lower positioned teams pushed us into the Top 4, a small goal ratio separating us from the team below. The final round came with us desperately holding onto the 4th spot, and facing the top team in the competition. Despite putting up a tough fight, we lost narrowly. We found ourselves nervously watching a rival Uni team’s last game. A loss or draw for them would ensure a semi‐finals berth for us. But, it seems our luck ran out and an upset win saw them swap places with us, confirming their semi‐final spot and abruptly ending our season in 5th position (Our goal ratio was 110. We fell short by 0.3!). Despite missing out on a semi‐finals spot by a hair’s breadth, it truly was a memorable and enjoyable season, with the team displaying commitment and spirit on and off the field. Being placed in Division B with two other SU teams (6th grade and U‐18s ‐1), proved to be competitive and rewarding. Special thanks to Christine Croucher for doubling up as goalkeeper in the second half of the season, and doing a fantastic job! On behalf of the 7th grade team, a huge thank you to Harriet Caterson and Andy Elton for the countless hours they spent to ensure the season progressed smoothly and to the other grades’ coaches; Lloyd Setter, Shaun Knowles, Ian McMaster and Nakul Parmar for their invaluable help throughout the season. We had a core group of players returning from 2010 and some new additions in Peter Kelly, Brendan Purser, Brendon Lourens, and Mark Crennan (returning from Europe) and Chris Pelow. Added to that was the return of tireless director of Hockey, Aaron Oman and 1st grade coach Chris Moylan. Pre season consisted of Sunday morning boot camp sessions run by Club legend, Ben Chiarella, with Wednesday nights by the SUSF trainer. These sessions had good turnouts each and every week and, when the team hit the turf mid Feb, a good fitness base had been established. With the whole premier squad looking good, we had pre season games against St Pats in Canberra (annual trip), Glebe & St George. All these games helped to finalise the squad for the first games of the season. The first game saw us come up against the previous year’s premiers in Moorebank, a tough first game for the students. With a narrow loss, the team looked to be coming together well. Unfortunately, for the second game of the year, the team had no less than 5 players out and we lost to our arch rivals, Glebe. As would be the case over the next few weeks, the team would be unsettled with unavailabilities and injuries. In the third week of the season, we faced one of our “bogey” teams in St George. However, the team came away with a very ugly 2‐1 victory and our first points for the year. This gave us some confidence to take on an undefeated Bankstown with a come from behind draw. The season started taking shape after this and confidence was growing. A double header weekend provided an opportunity for the team to continue the momentum. However, the weekend unfortunately lead to two losses and the inconsistency of old Uni was sneaking back. This weekend also saw the last game for Scott Laird who was on his way to Germany to live the dream of being a “professional” athlete. With the coaching staff seeing something needing to change off the field and the offer from Ben Chiarella to help, the team got together for a whiteboard/inspiration session. Ben ran a session any team would benefit from and there was a new feeling within the playing group. With a new Facebook group set up and more accountability from the players, the team came out that week and played against the other “Uni” in the comp. They came away with a win. After the game, everyone had a new lease on life and every player had a “buy” into the team. With some tough games for the middle of the season, the team had some up and down results and unfortunately that top 4 spot was slipping away. A refocus session run by one of the co‐captains, Mark Crennan, saw the team then get some more positive results and the revised goal of 30 points looked achievable. Unfortunately the Uni curse of transient players saw the squad shaken up more than normal. Our rep players, Tom Lobsey and Ryan Betts, were unavailable at times and with weddings, birthdays and Uni exams interrupting the team, we were using more players and consistency dropped. This then lead to an idea from the coach and some senior players that a bonding experience was required. A game out at Narellan was the perfect opportunity. A bus was hired and the guys all fell in love with each other again. This set the team up for a good run at the goal of 30 points at the pointy end of the season. With 5 games remaining, this looked like a chance, until a couple of poor performances lead to some narrow losses. With the last game remaining and the maximum points achievable of 28, the team came up against a representative‐laden Briars outfit. With this game being Sam Lobsey’s last with the Club, emotion was high. The team showed what they are capable of and came away with a 3‐1 win. This meant we finished the season in 7th spot on 28 points. In some ways, this is a step in the right direction for the team. However, the squad would still see it as a disappointing season. Highlights: Beating Briars twice in the season. Drawing with Minor Premiers NWS at home. Beating UTS twice. Players Player: Rhys Gray 22, Peter Kelly 21, Brendan Purser 19 Best Contribution: Peter Kelly Second Grade Justin Friemann and Brian Fitzpatrick Sydney Hockey Association Premier League 2 was very competitive in 2011 with the closing table not truly reflecting the tussle of week‐to‐week results. Whilst the leading Sydney clubs of Ryde, Briars, Glebe, Sutherland and Moorebank finally filled the top five positions, all of these teams, at times, struggled to earn points from those clubs finishing in the lower half of the table. This inconsistent week‐to‐week form stands in stark contrast to this competition in years gone by when one or two of the stronger clubs would dominate all rounds throughout the season. So, it was that Sydney University too had a season of inconsistent form and results. That is not to say, however, that the result for the season overall was unpredictable. Despite well organised pre‐season training, the second grade squad members were not well prepared and match ready for the start of the season. Generally, levels of fitness were below the standard necessary and the team was ill‐prepared for competition. Consequently, early performances were poor and characterised by a thorough thrashing and lesson in hockey from the dirty reds (Glebe) in match two followed by two losses to Bankstown and Gordon North Sydney in matches four and five respectively. Having encountered Moorebank, Glebe and 2010 premiers Sutherland in the first six weeks, the team settled down to focus on what could reasonably be achieved in the first round. Despite containing a number of quite talented players, the squad was inexperienced generally and lacked specific knowledge of strategy and the tactics which might help them. It was necessary for the coaching staff to focus on defensive structures and emphasise holding possession of the ball and the need to ‘flood’ the middle of the field when not in possession. Half‐time discussions would be limited to three or four key points aimed at ensuring all players understood the immediate areas of improvement required in order to get results. By the end of the first round, the team had stabilised and despite having only one win and two draws, the team was growing in confidence. It felt that the team was close to a positive breakthrough result. Three results from the first round were encouraging: an end‐to‐end crowd‐
pleasing 5‐5 draw against the very experienced UTS team fielding a large number of international over 40 representatives and a very tenacious 1‐1 draw against Ryde. Having copped a hiding in the first two matches of round one, the squad was keen to improve in matches 12 and 13 against Moorebank and Glebe respectively. The results were a well‐deserved draw against the former and a 2‐3 loss against the latter; an overall improvement in goal difference of + 11 from the first two encounters. These two results together with a win against Sutherland in match 14, inspired by a double from Andy Elton, was proof that week‐to‐week form was difficult to predict. The second round proved to be much improved with three wins and two draws and a negative goal difference of ‐3 against ‐13 in the first round. First, that in the Premier 2 competition, a team initially ranked in the bottom half of the table can contest a final‐four position by consistently taking points off the teams around them and picking up a surprise result or two against the top teams. In 2011, Sydney University Second grade had four draws and five single goal losses. We also lost by two goals against Gordon North Sydney in appalling weather conditions in round one. These results, particularly against Bankstown and Gordon North Sydney were disappointing and were always going to be costly to the team’s final rankings. This brings us to the second observation. It is surprising how often a single error in attack or defence can turn the result of a game. The way we prepare for the season, the players we select, and the importance of maintaining composure under pressure or taking an opportunity as it arises does affect the outcome. When a relatively small number of people, working together in a group, begin to make a small number of positive changes then, just like elsewhere in life, they make a positive difference to the outcomes they experience. There is definitely room for improvement in individual and team preparation and with so many draws and one‐goal defeats there is a lingering sense of frustration. It is no coincidence that the players consistently voted best and fairest by their peers are those that attend training consistently, listen attentively, get to the match venue on time, execute the game plan and make the extra effort. They are not necessarily particularly gifted hockey players but they demonstrate the positive behaviors that achieve result in all walks of life. To finish, we would just like to acknowledge and thank a few people. Brian and I extend our thanks to Chris Moylan and Aaron Oman. Whether through the preparation of training drills or your insightful comments, you have both made coaching second grade much easier and more rewarding. To the players, and there were a lot of you, thank you for your patience and dedication. We hope, in some small way, that you have been encouraged by our comments or that we have somehow contributed to your knowledge of the game or of yourself. To the administrators of the Club, yours is a thankless task. There is never any shortage of those quick to criticize. Our heartfelt thanks for what is always a difficult job. This disguises the fact that, on a number of occasions throughout the season, we found ourselves in the top four and with two rounds to go, we were still in with a chance to make the semi finals. In many ways, as a team, we look back over the season with some disappointment as we showed on a number of occasions that we had the potential to compete and beat the top teams. This was highlighted by a 5‐1 win over eventual premiers Glebe and a 2‐1 win over Manly who came third. Both of these victories occurred during a 12‐week run where we did not experience a loss. The only team we were unable to take points off was Easts, who were minor premiers. The biggest contributing factor to our overall demise was our inability to field the same team week‐in week‐
out. By the conclusion of the season, we had fielded 42 players. On a positive note we were able to maintain a core group of players that established great camaraderie and at times excellent teamwork. The group included Brian Gunner, Mark Woodruff, Justin Friemann, Jason Faulks, Nicolas Johnston, Alister Murray, Joe Cooper, Sunil Sajdeh, Steve Green, Hamish Mcarthur, Will Tan and Moylo. Alister was a mid season arrival to the team, that happened to coincide with our 12 win/draw streak. His abilities were quickly noticed by 2nd grade and it took great lengths to keep him for the season. Congratulations also goes to Nic Johnston who established himself as a 2nd grader during the season. His performances in that grade showed that he has bigger things coming his way. The goal scoring competition between the forwards and the backs (of course driven by the backs) dictated much of the banter. By the end of the year, there was only 2 goals in it. The competition for 3rd Grade “Best and Fairest” was hotly contested throughout the year. The eventual winner, Steve Green, left the gates open with his late season nuptials and subsequent absence, however, the even spread of points throughout the team in the last two weeks meant he snuck home by one point. One should note that our goalkeepers as a collective amassed double Steve’s points. We were lucky to benefit from a rotating goalkeeper roster that included two 2nd grade standard goalkeepers, Cam Rowland and Troy Rossiter. I would like to thank the boys for an enjoyable season, along with Brian Gunner for his assistance in running the team and being a key motivator during games throughout the year. Fourth Grade Michael Irby What action, what drama, what disappointment... and that was just the last few seconds of our season….. With time running out, 4th Grade forced a penalty corner as the full time siren sounded at the end of regulation time in the grand final. Trailing 2‐1, we put the ball in the back of the net for what seemed to be the equaliser and extra time. Unfortunately, after a brief discussion between the umpires, the goal disallowed. This was the moment that ended our 2011 season. Most players and teams would think making the grand final for the third year in a row and almost taking the game into extra time, was a sign that they have been successful. Overall, the season was one of mixed success ‐ with the team finishing in 3rd place for the minor premiership, before going on to play in the grand final – then only to lose 2‐1 to Briars. Throughout the year, we won fifteen games, lost four and had six draws. The pleasing aspect is that against the other top four teams, we were extremely competitive (only losing to Briars). However, it was disappointing that we could not maintain the intensity against some of the teams that were much lower than us on the ladder. These are the games that eventually proved costly in the race for the minor premiership. The biggest concern this year was the large turnover in players who took the field for fourth grade during the season. I had a look through my records and we managed to use 34 players throughout the season. While some of these absences were unavoidable (Vets being away at championships, injury, work commitments, exams, etc...), I believe some of the absences were due to a lack of commitment to the team. While there was a core group who have played most games (11 of the team played 18 games or more), we did not have a single player who played in all 25 matches this year. I am surprised we have had to use so many different players. To be successful, a team needs to have a stable player group. I believe the make‐up of the fourth grade side is ideal for the development of our younger players. We have a good mix of experience (Vets) and youth in the side and the younger players continued improving and growing in confidence as the season progressed. A few highlights for the year included: 

Damian Chown scoring his 200th goal for Sydney Uni this year. Henry Clarke playing his 100th game for the club in the Grand final and Paul John racking up his 200th game during the year. Cameron Whittaker finding love and flying to the USA to get married (missing the grand final). Congratulations Cam and Kelly. The game against Sutherland where Henry Clarke and his father David played in the same match. We are unsure if this has ever been achieved before for Sydney Uni and it was pleasing to celebrate the achievement with a victory on their home turf. Summary of Key Statistics: 

B & F: Rowan MacDonald (23.5), Steve Knapman (18), Michael Irby (15) Fifth Grade Brett Radcliffe Prologue: before I start the actual report I thought it best to set‐out & define who men’s 5th’s grade are and what grade we play. Definitions: Men’s 5th grade: by definition we are the 5th group of players that SUHC puts out each week in the men’s SHA Saturday competition so for further ref I will refer to the team as 5th grade Grade 2.1: by definition & basic maths is the 5th grade of the SHA association. i.e. P1 is where our 1st grade plays and so on, P2, 1:1, 1:2 & 2:1 (5th grade is where SUHC 5th grade plays.) Right, hopefully everybody is still following because after this, it gets a tad confusing! Grade 2:1 (5th grade) team make ups: based on the above definitions, you may ask why only three 5th grade teams play in the 5th grade comp? That’s because only 3 clubs in the SHA actually have teams in the top 5 grades of the comp. Most of the other 7 teams in 2:1 are the 3rd grade teams of smaller clubs, which is probably a fair enough grading. What is sort of not fair is most of these teams’ 2nd grades play our 2nd grade in the P2 comp. (note 1 team could draw upon P1 / first grade players as we play their 2nd grade) So, any player they may want to double down or drop comes from a standard 3 or 4 whole grades higher to what we are used to playing. Be sort of like playing in slow motion & in an oxygen tent, unless of course P2 is not the grade it’s cracked up to be! So are there only three 5th grade teams by above definition in the SHA..... No, there are another five 5th grade teams “hiding” in the grade 3:1, which, in SUHC terms, is about 7th grade. While SUHC has been moving its teams up divisions where possible, due to this grade’s “imbalance” the other large clubs have moved their 5th grades down a division to be in a more competitive grading, again fair enough. Final Position: By definition of the SHA points table, we finished in 5th place. Is that really a numerical surprise? The season came down to a couple of games, which we lost. Those are the breaks. Though legal (I checked with the SHA), I’m still not sure if it’s in the moral integrity of the game as a whole that in a cut throat game, the opposition could sub on a couple of P1 players to swing the result in a 5th grade comp. Ok, it’s a bit bitchy, but we would have loved the Lobsey brothers to been our 13th & 14th players that night. Unfortunately, by the SHA rules, we could only double down some 2:2 (4th grade) players, who were too busy anyway making the finals for themselves. So, we could say due to our final point’s placement that we are the best 5th grade team in the SHA, or we could look at it the other way. Over the whole season, we were just not good enough to make the finals. Yes, we drew 1:1 & 2:2 and against UTS (one grand finalist) and conceded late goals in both, one after the final whistle. We won 2‐1 & lost 3‐2 against GNS, the eventual premiers, good efforts. But drawing 4 times against the bottom 4 teams cost us 8 points, more than enough to make the finals. Player achievements: Our Best & fairest winner was Ken Stewart (20 points) followed by David “dangerous” McFadden (12.5 points) & Jonny “the prong” Wilkinson (11 points) Young Callum Jamieson took out the club’s best defender award (tied) in his first season; the last time a young player (Luke Turner also 5th grade) won this honour, he was promoted to 4th grade to while away his time playing left inner. Our top goal scorers were Mike Hodgkinson (hat trick in game 18) and Grant Hough both with 5 goals. Since we finished the season playing 18 games scoring 41 and conceding 33 for a goal difference of 8, our lack of an ace goal scorer is apparent. A quick check with the association shows that the 4 teams that finished above us had at least 1 if not 2 players each that scored double figures. Social Achievements: Ably lead by Jon “Jan” Marriott, 5th grade was generally regarded as the smelliest bunch of drunkards in the club. Participation in all club events was exemplary and well led by “Jan” who was the obvious winner of the 5th grade contribution award. Jan was also the architect for many impromptu social events on a regular basis, Monday lunchtime, Wednesday after work drinks, Friday night sessions before the big games (yes Jan I know!) I think he should be given a team shirt that says “ANY PUB, ANYTIME!” Highlights: Pub golf Night: The 4th annual fifth grade pub golf invitational was played and won by our new Dutch goalkeeper Pieter Mees (who apparently UTS didn’t really want?) with a score of 2 under par. We really need to knock up a trophy for this night boys before we forget the winner’s names and scores. Fines Night: A lovely evening which started off well for most players but as the night progressed became it became a bit off a blur. Seems it took three bar staff working full time to keep the jugs coming. Several 6th grade players came to share the social bonding and the good news was most, if not all, made it home sometime the next day. Finals Series: The team showed great attendance to all the men’s finals, except where games were played at the same time. Congratulations again to Marcus and 8th grade for becoming Champions again. Commiserations to Bott and the 4th grade team in their narrow lose in the grand final. I thought Sean had scored as well. Annual Dinner: Cannot remember much about this except that we were nominated as one of the Social teams of the year and had to boat race against 1st grade to win the prize. We were first past the post but Judge Nappy decreed, after the viewing the race on this mini cam/IPhone, that too much spillage occurred and awarded the race to firsts. Now I’m not saying that boat racing has become a little “soft” at this club, but several re‐rows really should have taken place to sort the men from the boys! Anyway we did the right thing, “accepted” the loss and immediately blamed our number one drunkard “Jan” for been overseas trying to get a visa back into the country and missing the dinner. Generally, the team tried to do its best on & off the field for the club and I am pretty sure everyone had an enjoyable season. Cheers GI 5th grade dogs body. Sixth Grade Damian Cunningham An excellent season for the SUHC men's 6th grade, finishing 5th on the ladder in the regular season. After 18 well fought for games the team won 8 games, lost 7 and drew 3 to amass a very respectable 27 points, 8 points ahead of the 6th placed team and only 6 points out from gaining a place in the finals. The solid performance from all members of the team was defiantly born from keeping a consistent team roster throughout the season along with the support of players from 5th grade. Reduced availability through the uni holidays was detrimental and led to some losses and this inevitably affected our end of season position. MVP for the season Charlie Young B&F Sri Puthi Coach: Damian Cunningham Captain: Damian Cunningham/ David Henderson/Charlie Young Seventh Grade Paul Rattray I would like to thank everybody for another successful and enjoyable season for 7th grade this season. The team was very competitive all season and making the semi finals was a just reward for our efforts. We felt we had a real chance of winning the competition, but a spate of injuries to key players meant we had five players out for the end of season games. Despite these setbacks everyone had a great season and we are looking forward to next season. This success, along with the 8th grades win meant we again won the 4th division championship. Thanks again to the club executive and everyone involved for a great season. Eight Grade Marcus Tjiong The 8th grade men’s team had another successful year in 2011, winning the club three Pennants with the Division 4.2 Premiership, Division 4.2 Minor Premiership, and together with 7th grade, the 4th Division Club Championship. This continues our strong showing over the last three years which now has gained two Minor Premierships, two Club Championships, three Grand Final appearances, and two Premiership victories. The 2011 season faced the usual early difficulties with squad numbers and the integration of beginner players. Once settled we had an enjoyable normal season, with tough games fought with a relentless competitive edge and energy. There was the usual adversity of holidays disrupting team cohesion, however commitment to the games stayed high and despite a small squad, we finished the season well to win the Minor Premiership. The finals campaign really showed the character of the team. We lost the Major Semi Final against second placed Ryde and were relegated to the Preliminary Final against Bentstix. This seemed an insurmountable task as our new opponents were allowed to drop an entire higher grade team into our competition to make a late run to the finals and an almost certain Premiership. On a day that was seemingly our last, the team fought hard, adapted their play, and snatched an unlikely 1‐0 victory in a monumental effort to take us to the Grand Final the next week. The Grand Final against Ryde was a massive contest, helped by a great SUHC crowd much appreciated by the team. With the scores locked at 2‐2 after extra time we won the Premiership on penalty strokes to complete an amazing year. Certainly all our goals for 2011 were reached. We brought in new players to hockey, played competitive hockey, promoted enjoyment in the game, and won our club a Premiership and 3 overall awards. We look forward to facing these challenges again in 2012.
