Do we expect him to move in miraculous ways in our day-in, day-out lives? Maybe we'd like to see miracles, but it's hard to see past our problems. All that is about to change, like water into wine. "There are miracles all around us all the time," says Mark Batterson, the best-selling author of The Circle Maker," but you won't see them if you don't know how to look for them." In The Grave Robber, Batterson explores the seven miraculous signs of Jesus found in the Gospel of John. Beginning with the wedding at Cana and ending with the resurrection of Lazarus, he takes a closer look at each of these moments, sharing inspiring stories of God's movement today, and pointing out everyday miracles big and small that often go unnoticed. Don't be mistaken, this isn't a book about seeking miracles for the sake of miracles. Batterson wants to draw you closer to Jesus, the source of our salvation, and the reason for our hope. But this is more than a book about miracles. It's a book about the only One who can perform them. Batterson cautions readers, "Don't just seek miracles. Seek Jesus. And if you seek Jesus, miracles will find you." Nothing has changed since Jesus called Lazarus out of his tomb four days after his funeral. Our impossible situations still double as God's greatest opportunity to reveal his glory. No matter how big the problem is, God is bigger still. Anyone who longs to see God work in miraculous ways today will love Batterson's faith-building, life-giving message. The paperback book is available in The Bible and Book Corner. May 2016 4 PROPOSED MICHIGAN BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY UNDER DEBATE By Arkena Willis The Michigan State Board of Education has proposed a policy aimed at ensuring that students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning their identity (LGBTQ) have a safe and supportive school environment. This topic has been a hot bed of debate causing the State Board to clarify that this Draft Guidance would not be mandated and that school districts would be making their own decisions to meet the needs of the children and families they serve. A look at the state's proposed policy Here are some of the steps the policy would encourage local school districts to implement: Adopt and enforce policies that protect students from harassment, violence and discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression. Provide professional development opportunities on issues affecting LGBTQ students to all district staff and school board members. Support the creation of extracurricular studentled clubs, such as gay-straight alliances or gender and sexuality alliances in middle and high school. Provide appropriate and meaningful family engagement and support. Encourage respect for the human and civil rights of all people, including those who are LGBTQ, throughout the curriculum. Provide developmentally appropriate information about LGBTQ issues in school libraries and in student and faculty resource centers. Designate a building-level staff member who is knowledgeable about issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. In addition, the document offers this guidance for schools: May 2016 School staff should address students by their chosen name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity, whether or not there has been a legal name change. When requested, schools should make a goodfaith effort to change unofficial student records with the chosen name and appropriate gender markers to promote consistency among teachers, substitute teachers, school administrators and other staff. Students should be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity, and alternative options such as an all-gender or single-user restroom should be made available. A student should not be forced to use a locker room that does not align with his or her gender identity. Locker room usage should be determined on a case-by-case basis. All written comments submitted by May 11, 2016, will be reviewed and considered in the final version of the document. You can submit comments by traditional mail, fax or at this web address: www.everyvoicecountsmi.org. Send facsimile to 517-373-1233, or by traditional mail to: Kim Kovalchick, Supervisor Michigan Department of Education, Coordinated School Health and Safety Programs Unit, P.O. Box 30008. Lansing, MI 48909 The full Draft Guidance document is available here: http://everyvoicecountsmi.org/wp-content/ uploads/2016/03/SBE-Statement-on-LGBTQYouth-2-9-2016-v2.pd As a Christian parent of a 16-year-old daughter, it is a serious concern that she may be subjected to sharing a bathroom or locker room with a boy who is confused about his gender. The Bible is very clear that homosexuality is a sinful perversion of God’s gift of sexuality. “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NKJV). 5 Invitation to: Macedonia Baptist Church Sunday School Superintendent of Sunday School: Rev. We hear a lot about the young people of Detroit, but not generally in a good context. Our Macedonia sister, Gloria Cunningham, has mobilized students to join her in gathering information for and about programs and organizations that enrich and provide safe environments of fun and encouragement. The results are pictures of teens throughout Detroit engaging in positive activities and stretching themselves in the process. Let’s pick up a magazine, read about them, encourage others to do the same and share the information with young people who may not realize how many programs are available to them. For more information regarding the Urban Teen Magazine, please see Gloria Cunningham.
