All of us wish further development and success in conquering the world’s shipbuilding market! Congratulations! Association of Polish Maritime Industries NEWS FROM FORUM OKRĘTOWE MEMBER COMPANIES NEWBUILDINGS Sailing training vessel for Algeria - 1000th launching coincides with 70th Anniversary of Remontowa Shipbuilding Remontowa Shipbuilding - a shipyard with rich traditions and experience is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. In the beginning its activity covered construction of railway wagons and production of furniture. Gradually expanding its production profile, it has become a leader among European shipyards. Today, Remontowa Shipbuilding, being a member of the Remontowa Holding capital group, offers a wide range of products while the ships built in it stand out in the market due to cutting-edge technology and high level of automation meeting the Owners’ requirements as well as the latest industry trends. Over 70 years of activity Remontowa Shipbuilding has built nearly 1000 Profile of the sailing training vessel under construction at Remontowa commercial vessels and naval ships of various types. Shipnuilding for Algeria. Fig.: Remontowa Shipbuilding The thousandth ship is already under construction. Its launching will take place this year in Autumn. It will be a sail training ship ordered by an Owner from Algeria. The three-masted frigate will serve the Maritime Academy’s cadets in improving their marine craft and navigational skills. In addition, like the majority of sail ships, it will perform ceremonial duties and participate in international competitions and races. The sailing training ship will operate in all waters except the polar area during polar winter. Apart from the construction of the vessel, the contract also embraces the training of crew and cadets which will be carried out in cooperation with Gdynia Maritime Academy. The author of the concept and basic design of the ship is design office Choreń Design & Consulting. The vessel will be delivered late 2016. 1 NEWSLETTER FORUM OKRĘTOWE Second (of a series of three) modern double-ended ferry for Canada in production This is how the ferries will look like... Fig.: RMDC One Silver Canadian Dollar welded in the hull at the ceremony. Photo: Remontowa Shipbuilding On June 1, 2015, a ceremony of laying the keel for the second (of a series of three) modern car passenger ferry was held at Remontowa Shipbuilding yard, member of the Remontowa Holding capital group. The ferries have been ordered by Canadian owner BC Ferries - biggest ferry operator in North America. The keel laying, despite nowadays having a symbolic character only, is an important part of the shipbuilding process. It is a milestone in the implementation of each project crowning the end of fabrication of the hull and the beginning of assembling individual components of the ship together. The ceremony was attended by representatives of BC Ferries. Symbolic silver coin in the bottom section of the hull was welded in by vice president of engineering - Mr. Mark Wilson. The contract signed at the end of last year, covers the construction of three most modern ferries in their class, including delivery to the home port. The ferries will be driven by azimuth thrusters with electric motors. The source of power will be dual fuel generating sets fuelled by conventional diesel oil or LNG. Such propulsion will guarantee cost-effective operation of ships and low emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The vessels were entirely designed by Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting - a consulting design office being a member of the Remontowa Holding. The three new BC Ferries vessels comply both with the requirements of the classification society (Lloyd’s Register) under supervision of which they are being built, as well as the Government Agency (Transport Canada). The ferries will operate on the west coast of Canada taking on board up to 150 cars and 600 passengers. SHIPREPAIRS AND CONVERSIONS More effective dredging performance for Boskalis’ Shoalway Most of the dredgers serviced by Remontowa over the recent years come from renowned owners Royal Boskalis, being among the world’s leaders in a wide range of services including dredging, offshore sector and towage and salvage. The Boskalis’ fleet of dredgers comprises some 60 units, including trailing suction hopper dredgers and the largest unit among them - the Queen of the Netherlands with a hopper capacity of 35,500 m³. A trailing suction hopper dredger has large, powerful pumps and engines that enable it to suck up sand, clay, sludge and even gravel from ocean or river beds. One or two suction pipes run from the vessel to the bed. A draghead is attached to the end of the pipe and lowered to just above the bed, making it possible to regulate the mixture of sand and water that it takes in. A trailing suction hopper dredger generally stores the dredged material in its own hopper and discharges the left-over water overboard, so it may operate on its own, without the need to employ accompanying hopper barges. On April 23, the dredger of just the type described above, entered the Gdansk based Remontowa Shiprepair yard. The 2010 built vessel was delivered by Intervak Scheepswerf Constructie of Harlingen, but its partly outfitted hull was built in Szczecin, Poland. The ship is 90.2 m long overall, 19.8 m wide and draws 5.9 m. It may dredge up to 30 m deep and features 4500 m³ hopper capacity. 2 NEWSLETTER FORUM OKRĘTOWE Two years earlier Shoalway visited Remontowa for maintenance of 11 double bottom tanks and replacement of starboard side azimuthing main propulsion thruster. This time, in 2015, the ship had the complete 23-tonne assembly of port side azimuthing thruster (owners’ supply) installed. However, the most important item in repair specification, was the dredging pipe works. At Remontowa, the suction pipe was modified, which was aimed at improving the dredging efficiency. Also system for hopper water filling recirculation has been upgraded in pump room and on deck. Furthermore, such works have been done onboard Shoalway during its recent stay at Remontowa, as The Shoalway dredger in the dock no 1. hydraulic system related works (hydraulic hoses and Photo: Jerzy Uklejewski piping replacement, replacement of hydraulic cylinders for bottom hopper doors. Also overlays have been installed on eight bottom doors (some 2.5 ton of material), as well as freshwater and ballast water tanks bottom plugs, besides some minor works. The dredger has also been docked in the course of recent works, completed late May. After that the dredger commenced work in German port of Rostock. OFFSHORE Remontowa assisted Maersk Supply Service in upgrading their Maersk Assister AHTS Danish AHTS Maersk Assister has arrived at Remontowa essentially to have one major modification done - to get a new, back-up winch. The new major item of equipment has been installed on deck „D”. The powerful, Maersk Supply Service operated, offshore tug had arrived at Remontowa with 129-tonne spare winch temporarily stowed starboard on main deck. Late May, with use of the Yard’s own sheerleg floating crane REM-220, an operation to move and place the winch on its final place of installation, on the upper deck, was performed. Furthermore, additional equipment was installed, accompanying the winch itself, such as cable spooling guide runner, guiding roller and a smaller, 26.5-tonne winch. In 2004, the university trained 4,000 students, in 2012, almost twice as much. The University has a modern teaching base (laboratory marine power plant simulators - the bridge, engine room, navigation, ARPA, GMDSS, etc.). In the open part of the meeting, which was held with the participation of representatives of the media and banks, the current state of the shipbuilding industry in Poland was presented, which strongly differs from the circulating stereotypes and public perception. Film showing an overview of the events of 2014 and the first months of 2015 in the maritime industry in Poland, produced by PortalMorski.pl was shown. Director of the office Forum Okretowe Jerzy Czuczman provided presentation on the current situation in the maritime sector in Poland. In 2014 Polish yards delivered 11 fully equipped ships, of which as many as 70 percent came from Forum Okrętowe member companies. Polish yards repaired or serviced more than 600 ships or other floating units in 2014 (64 percent by Forum Okretowe member companies). This included significant conversions. Companies affiliated to the Forum Okretowe (60 entities, including 5 yards, 44 equipment manufacturers, 11 associate members) generated a total revenue of PLN 4,900 million. For deliveries in the years 2015-2016 as many as 27 fully outfitted ships are contracted at Polish yards (203 thousand CGT worth EUR 800 million). J. Czuczman also emphasized the product complexity jump seen in the Polish maritime industry over the recent years - from steel processing in 1995 to sales of technical know-how in 2015.
