Acura NSX
Issue 27
The Acura NSX supercar will be produced at a new Performance
Manufacturing Center in Ohio. (the facility was the former
Bellemar Parts Industries location). The NSX is to begin mass
production in 2015.
Notes off the Cuff ………
Gary Hand, VP
Hello to all HTM associates.
It is amazing that already we are at the mid point of 2013.
Some thoughts on some current activities……..
1. Industry update, sales results through May 2013. The U.S. market continues to remain strong,
at a 15.3 million average annual sales rate (seventh straight month greater than 15 million).
American Honda sales results were +4.5% for the month and +5.6% year to date, as compared
to May 2012. Best sellers are the Accord ( no. 4 in overall vehicle sales), Civic (no. 7) and
CRV (no. 11) Inventory of Accord L4 is at 37 days and CRV at 36 days (ideal level is between
45 ~60 days). Our production schedules will continue to be strong to satisfy sales expectations.
I find the following of interest in regards to our competitive position. One of our friendly
competitors (Co. T) has just introduced their full model change vehicle for the compact segment.
In the race for fuel efficiency, this model will use CVT mission. It is my understanding this
mission will be imported, and therefore at presumably a premium cost. We (Honda) have already
localized our CVT capability, and will provide us the opportunity to applying to specific models.
2. More on CVT. To continue to improve our competitiveness of CVT, we will soon be localizing key
components of the mission. The Pulley Assy will be made at AEP and will begin delivery to HTM
in August. Also, the HPDC expansion is complete and two new die cast machines are installed
and trials are ongoing. HPDC will begin to supply TC and M cases in December.
Thanks to all associates that have been working on these projects.
3. 4WD is on the move. As you know, in April, the Rear Diff Assembly line moved to the south
end of the new Assembly Bldg. Next step, detail plans are being developed to move Front
Transfer Assembly (in September) to the same bay location. The purpose of this move is to
provide more floor space to expand our gear production.
4. On June 19, we held our NH Circle Main Event. It was a very exciting time as each team
presented their theme. I congratulate each team member for completing their theme,
learning and improving their skills. At the same time, I thank each team for continuing to
improve our company. I encourage every associate to engage in this type of activity to continue
to make our company competitive.
Everyone, please have a safe and enjoyable Summer shutdown.

PREPARE for the NEXT DECADE 2010~2020
By Dave Schmitt
Jun- 6-2013
Be the Leader in Drivetrain Mfg., with Challenging Spirit, Flexibility, and
Speed, to maximize Joy for our Customers.
As we have been saying all along, Vision making & implementation requires a clear plan. But once that’s made,
then what? A plan is only a plan – a description of what to do. There are several other important steps in the
cycle we refer to as “PDCA”, that need to be followed to insure success – they are summarized in the diagram
below. I did a little research on the origins of “PDCA” & found out more about two key individuals – Walter
Shewhart and William Deming. Both were instrumental in creating practices for continuous improvement to
achieve high quality & customer satisfaction.
Walter Shewhart – “Grandfather of Total Quality Mgmt. (T.Q.M.)”
William Edwards Deming – “Father of Modern Quality Control”
Original notions of T.Q.M. & continuous
improvement trace back to a Bell Telephone
employee – Dr. Shewhart. As a teacher for Dr.
Deming, he preached the importance of mgmt.
adapting processes to create profitable situations
for both business & consumers, & promoted the
use of one of his creations – Statistical Process
Control (S.P.C.) Charts. Dr. Shewhart believed
that lack of information greatly hampered efforts
to control processes, so he developed S.P.C. to
aid managers to make efficient, economical
decisions. Many modern ideas on quality owe
their inspiration to Dr. Shewhart. He also developed
the “Learning & Improvement PDSA Cycle”, that combines both creative
mgmt. thinking with statistical analysis. This Cycle contains 4 continuous
steps: Plan, Do, Study and Act. These steps, he believed, ultimately lead to
total quality improvement. It draws structure from the notion that constant
evaluation of mgmt. practices - as well as willingness to adopt new ideas &
disregard unsupported ideas – are keys to evolution of successful enterprises.
Perhaps best known for the PDCA Circle named after
him, Dr. Deming taught mgmt. to improve design,
quality, testing, & sales by applying statistical
methods. He made major contributions to Japan's
reputation for high-quality goods & economic power.
In 1947, he helped with planning the 1951 Japanese
Census. While in Japan, his expertise in quality
control, brought him an invitation from the Japanese
Union of Scientists & Engineers (J.U.S.E.). J.U.S.E.
members sought an expert to teach statistical control,
so in 1950, invited him to train 100’s of engineers,
managers, scholars, & some top mgmt., on S.P.C.
quality concepts. His message: improving quality will
reduce expenses, increase productivity, & market share. Several Japanese
manufacturers applied his techniques widely & experienced heretofore unheard
of levels of quality & productivity. Improved quality & lowered cost Japanese
products did Indeed create new demand. Deming declined to get royalties from
the transcripts of his lectures, so J.U.S.E. Board of Directors created the
Deming Prize” to re-pay him for his friendship & kindness. Within Japan, the
“Deming Prize” continues to have great influence.
In Honda, we previously promoted the “SA-PDCA” cycle (S.A. = Situation Appraisal). Then, with the introduction of
TQM, we enhanced “SA” by clarifying its 3 steps as “DST”. So, as you prepare and implement your Vision, please remember
to always utilize the “DST-PDCA Cycle”, because, continuous improvement requires it!

The Honda Young Professionals (HYP) is a group
started in 89 Ki, and is targeted towards exempt
associates with less than 3 years of experience.
This group was started in an effort to improve
new associate connection to HTM. It is hoped that
this, along with other initiatives targeting new
associates, will improve employee retention,
resulting in a direct savings and increased productivity
for HTM. The group will take part in both social and service events. This allows new associates to
develop connections with one another and the local community. It also allows for suggestions from
new employees to improve the onboarding process and increase utilization of new employees, as well
as to promote knowledge of new associates in areas outside their department. It is hoped that this
will have the effect of increasing inter-department communication as HTM continues to grow.
Events that have already taken place include a trip to a local restaurant, a trip to the
Transportation Research Center (TRC), and a presentation by Vice President, Gary Hand. More
events are planned for the future.

Honda Stands Out in Environmental Stewardship
May 24, 2013 - Honda of America by Stacey Pond
Zero waste to landfill. Rainwater capture. Improving energy efficiency in our manufacturing
operations. For Honda operations, every light switch turned off, every piece of cardboard in the
recycle bin adds up. This week, those things added up to recognition by the Ohio EPA.
Honda operations in Ohio were presented with a
stewardship award by Ohio EPA Director, Scott Nally
during the organization’s annual Ohio EPA Compliance
Assistance Conference in Columbus.
The silver level award in the Ohio Encouraging
Environmental Excellence Program, also known as “E3”,
recognized each of Honda’s manufacturing operations in the
state, including HAM facilities in Marysville, East Liberty
and Anna as well as the HTM facility in Russells Point.
Honda in Ohio’s environmental team leadership
“As part of Honda’s efforts to be a company society wants from left to right: Lee Sanders (HTM),
to exist, we have initiatives in multiple areas of
Jim Bayer (ELP), Dirk Nordberg (MAP),
environmental impact,” said Robert Bottom, Green Factory
Mark Tufts (AEP) and Robert Bottom
leader at HAM. “Our zero waste to landfill waste reduction
(HAM).
was achieved in 2011 as the result of a long-term, multiyear effort.”
In addition to reducing landfill waste, Honda demonstrates
environmental stewardship through its energy efficiency
efforts like regulating air and greenhouse gas emissions.
What does it mean to be a good environmental steward?
The Ohio EPA says environmental stewardship is any
activity that reduces the impact of business activities on
the environment beyond measures required by any permit
or rule, producing a better environment, conserving natural
resources and resulting in long-term economic benefits.
The E3 award looks at some specific attributes of a

need to be innovative.
For Honda, innovation is a hallmark of the company. One of Honda in Ohio’s innovative environmental
approaches is the avoidance of using over 24 million additional gallons of groundwater in FY12 with
a 7 acre, 2-pond system to capture rainwater. Activities like this made Honda a candidate for the
E3 award.
The EPA award and flag pictured at right will be proudly displayed at each of the plants in the coming
weeks. Stop by to see them and remember to tell your plant and department environmental representatives thanks for the activities they help encourage that led to this important recognition.

Things seem to be improving. Why must I (we) do this?
Answer: Although things have stabilized to some degree, we must be more advanced, better priced, and
more attractive than our competition. Find and reduce or eliminate our inefficiencies.
I don’t think I have any impact at all, concerning Loss Reduction…do I?
Answer: Each associate can be involved and help eliminate loss. We all must make improvements in our
area of expertise as we depend on each other.
Is this just another cost down activity?
Answer: Due to our competitors becoming more efficient and able to reduce the prices of their vehicles, we
MUST continue to improve and become even more efficient to compete.
What does this mean to me?
Answer: You are the expert in your area asking for continuous thinking on how to improve. We need to be
-10more efficient than our competition!
