South Charlotte Sports Report “HOMETOWN TEAMS ... HOMETOWN KIDS” Volume 6, Issue 6 www.southcharlottesports.com July 14, 2011 - FREE JUSTIN FRENCH IS READY TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY for the challenge that awaits me.” The last year has been Justin’s most successful ever. He has made several adjustments to his arm slot and pitching grips. He has moved from a three quarter arm angle to a sidearm delivery. Justin has also moved from the role of a starter into the role of a closer that comes on to end close ball games for his team. “At first I wasn’t sure about the move but now I love closing out games. I love the feel of the pressure and responsibility. I consider my best pitch to be my 2-seam fastball. I am not a big velocity guy but my 2-seam runs and sinks a lot which gets me groundballs. My next best pitch is my slider. I use it to keep hitters off balance. It is really effective because it moves in the opposite direction as my 2-seam and changeup.” With his commitment to West Point, Justin becomes the second South Charlotte baseball player in two years and third in five years to cast their future with the Black Knights program. Alex Jensen of Charlotte Catholic just arrived on campus two weeks ago and Shaun Wixted of Butler just completed his senior season on the team. In order to receive the opportunity to play at West Point, one must also take care of their academic requirements. Justin worked hard to achieve success inside the classroom. “I have done fairly well in school, but that is what I need the most improvement on to be successful at West Point. I make mostly A’s and B’s and I have a 3.7 GPA. I am a part of my schools National Technical Honor Society. I also received the Sons of the American Revolution Award in my JROTC program which is given to the outstanding third year cadet.” To achieve this amazing honor it takes a whole lot of helping hands along the way. Justin offers public thanks to the following; “I would like to thank everyone at On Deck/ CBC, especially Jeff Schaefer, Bo Robinson, Jason Hill, and Paul Lover for all the help they have given me. Also, I would like to thank my JROTC instructors, Lieutenant Colonel Wint and First Sergeant Barksdale as well as the baseball coaching staff at Ardrey Kell, led by Hal Bagwell . Lastly I would like to thank my family for the encouragement and motivation they have given me.” The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Justin French on this unique honor to both continue his baseball career and serve our great country. Justin set a goal many years ago and worked hard to reach it. We wish him the best as he completes his senior season and heads north for an amazing experience. Good Luck Justin. For a rising high school senior baseball pitcher what could be more patriotic than receiving an offer to play baseball at The United States Military Academy (West Point) on July 4th? According to Ardrey Kell High School student-athlete Justin French, very few things could top his experience last week. The son of Jeff and Laura French received and accepted an offer from West Point to join the academy and its baseball team for the 2012-2013 season. The opportunity to play at West Point is something that Justin has worked for over the years. “As long as I can remember I have wanted to go to West Point. West Point has a presence about it that is unbelievable. The history of the place is what really got me. Such things as the location being hand selected by George Washington and being a part of the same school as former presidents, generals, and astronauts is amazing.” In addition to committing himself to a successful baseball development program over the last few years, Justin also went the extra step and enrolled in the Ardrey Kell High School ROTC program. “I knew from a very young age that I was going to go into the military. Taking part in my schools JROTC program just proved to me that I was meant to be in the military.” Justin and his coaches made it clear to the Army coaches that he was interested in starting a military career at the academy. With so many parts and pieces to the application process, life as an Army Baseball recruit is different than at most Division 1 schools. “When recruiting athletes the service academies have a little different process they follow. For example, a Division 1 program cannot call you until July 1, but the academies are able to call much earlier due to the longer application process. When applying to an academy you have to obtain a Congressional Recommendation from your state. Also, you have to pass a physical fitness test and a medical examination. The coaching staff helps guide you through this process while telling you about the school and the baseball program. Later in the process, you may visit the school. My family and I went up in early April and took a tour with the coaches and sat in on a practice. Also, we saw them play a series against Holy Cross. I was able to talk to the players and parents to get a feel for how they like the school. In September I will go back up to West Point for an official visit and spend time with some of the cadets. One day will be with a freshman and one day will be with a senior.” Following his acceptance of the offer last week, Justin was able to take a deep breath and relax a little before going back to work on the mound for the CBC O’s. “It is a huge relief to be done with the search for a school. The recruiting process has been one of the most stressful things I have ever done. Even though I have committed I still need to push myself in the classroom and on the field to better prepare myself FOOTBALL CAMP BASEBALL CAMP SOCCER CAMP South Charlotte Sports Football Camp South Charlotte Sports Pre-Season Baseball Camp South Charlotte Sports Report Back to School Soccer Camp ENROLL AT ENROLL AT JULY 25-28 AUGUST 15-17 www.southcharlottesportscamps.com www.southcharlottesportscamps.com AUGUST 15-17 ENROLL AT www.southcharlottesportscamps.com Page NEWS AND NOTES As we roll along in our sixth year of publishing the South Charlotte Sports Report, the number one question I receive in my email box remains the same year after year. How do I get my picture/story in the South Charlotte Sports Report? The answer is very simple. If your team or child has accomplished something that you would like to share with the community, then send me an email. Here are a few helpful tips. • Send high quality photos, over 1MB in size. Photos taken with most phones are generally tough to print. Photos downloaded from the internet are almost always too small in file size. • Light is good, an outside photo will almost always work better than an inside photo. For inside photos, make sure you use a good flash. • Label everyone in the photo by row and then left to right. Make sure you spell everyone’s name correctly. • When adding information about the team or achievement, be clear as to what they have accomplished. • We also love to receive story ideas that have a neat human interest angle. If you have an idea, send it over and let’s get to work. Since we are talking about photos, let me take this time to tell you about our photo company and the job we can do for your school, athletic association or organization. South Charlotte Sports Report Action Photography works with many area youth organizations to produce first class team and individual photos. We operate photo days all across the community for our clients in nearly every sport. With affordable prices and a win-win program for the organizations and schools, we are growing into one of the top companies in Charlotte. By supporting our photo company, you also support the growth of youth sports in the community. In addition to team and individual photo days, we also offer senior photos, prom and formal photos, action photos and more. Please give me a chance to earn your school or organization’s business. She has run cross country for six years and indoor track for three years. Let’s go beyond the game with Julia Hoover. What are some of your top athletic accomplishments? “In the past year I was recognized as Girls’ Track and Field First Team 800 meters and Second Team 4x400 meter relay. I received Most Valuable Player for the girls’ track team.” Myers Park High School rising senior Julia Hoover was the 2011 conference champion in the 800-meter run. The 18-year-old daughter of Rod and Cornelia Hoover has competed in track How did you and your track and field team fare this past season? “I think that I had the best season to date for track this past year. I won the conference 800 and came in second in the region for the 800. I have also won a Southwestern 4A title and Girls Only Challenge and had the fastest 800 time in the area! I also had a great time with the relays, the 4x800 and the 4x400. My teammates are the best I could ask for, and we all work together so wonderfully! We depend on each other a lot, and I have the deepest respect for my team and get my positive energy from them. The friend- ships you make through running are really deep because of all the pain and training we have been through together! And when we are on in a race – there is nothing stopping us!” What is your best memory of track and field? “My best memory of track and field would have to be finishing the 800 race at the state meet. My legs were killing me and I couldn’t catch my breath but I looked up at the big screen and saw that I ran 2:15.99 and was overcome with happiness and relief [that] the hard work I had put into the season had paid off. I was in such disbelief that I had run that time and was so overjoyed. I then looked over to my dad, who was in the stands, and we gave each other a thumbs-up. There is no better feeling than running a great race.” What is the best advice you have ever received? “The best advice I have ever received has come from Coach [John] Cline, who told me to never be afraid to be aggressive. You need to be in the race from the beginning and to not be afraid to work hard – the worst that can happen is that you get tired.” How do you perform in the classroom at Myers Park? “I perform pretty well academically. I was a Junior Marshall this past year (meaning I was top 10 percent of the class), and I earn mostly A’s with a few B’s splashed in there. My favorite subjects include English, social studies and psychology. Especially in psychology I enjoyed getting to know how the brain worked and how we think, learn, develop and grow depending on social settings or genetics.” What are your goals for your senior season? “My goals for senior year include getting into college (that’s a pretty major one), but running wise, I hope to have my best season to date. I plan for the team to be competing at the state meet this fall and I believe that we are such a strong team this year and I can’t wait to see where we take our talents and potential!” Page Volume 6, Issue 6 GET TESTED. Jason works hard with area baseball players to prepare them for college playing opportunities. His experience in working with college coaches has proven to be of great value for members of the CBC O’s organization. Congratulations to Coach Jason Hill for being named the Q Shack Coach of the Week. To nominate your coach for this award, please visit The Q Shack or email tripp@southcharlottesports.com. Located in The Providence Promenade 10822 Providence Road Charlotte, NC 28277 www.qshackclt.com 704-542-5959 This summer our family had the opportunity to host a player from the Pineville Pioneers, a new team in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. The league is partially owned by MLB and the team is comprised of young men from colleges all over the country. They have the chance to sharpen their baseball skills with live play over the summer and use wooden bats. Some say this is the closest thing to playing in the minor leagues that a college player can do. If the players aren’t playing for a team in their hometown, they are placed with host families in the area with whom they live for the summer. Our host player is a pitcher from Francis Marion University in Florence, SC and his name is Jarrott Hooks. For weeks we anticipated the arrival of Jarrott...we all had hopes and expectations, and wondered how it would work out. We have two young kids, aged 9 and 10 who play softball and baseball and knew they would look up to Jarrott as a role model. I am so happy to say that our experience has been amazing! Jarrott has truly become like a member of our family and he fits right in. We try to make it to all of his home games at beautiful Jack Hughes Park and during his down time we have enjoyed family meals together, basketball games, golf, Wii video game tournaments, trips to Carowinds and attending church. He has made time to attend Jackson’s games for the On Deck /CBC Cougars and Libby’s games for the South Park 8U All Stars. It means so much to them to see him in the stands! I love that my children have had a summer of fun with their new “brother” and are learning what it looks like for a college student to balance top level athletics and academics. I am glad that we have opened our home to Jarrott, and highly recommend the experience to others. BUY . SELL . TRADE New & Used Equipment We Pay Cash for Your Used Gear! Baseball . Lacrosse . Instead of enjoying weekends at the swimming pool, the granddaughter of Chuck and Lynn Timon has spent countless hours in the 90 degree heat at area softball tournaments. Kyra loves the game and she can’t think of too many other places she would rather spend her summer. Let’s go beyond the game with Kyra Timon. When did you start playing softball and why? “I used to play soccer and swim for the Morrison Y’s swim team but I wasn’t getting tall enough for those 2 activities and decided to try softball when I was 8. It turned out I was pretty good at it and my PCAA 8u team won the city championship with only 8 players. “ What positions do you play and what do you like about those positions? “I used to be a catcher in rec ball and really liked that position, but when I switched to travel ball my height was a problem for my coach and I started playing 2nd base. I like 2nd base because I get a lot of chances to make double plays and get to not only cover 2nd but also 1st base on bunts.” The Charlotte Kings soccer team competed in the Kick It 3V3 event this past weekend in Rock Hill. Team members include: (L-R): Coach: Trevor Lan, Kyle Lan, Nathan Plaisance, Mason Netupsky, Tyler Lumwai Ian Netupsky What do you consider as your top three athletic accomplishments? “For sure my favorite accomplishment was making my first home run this year. It was a really hard hit to right field and went all the way to the fence. I have cut a full second off my running to 1st base this year because of working with a personal trainer on my travel team. That may not seem like a big accomplishment, but it really is. I can finally do a stand up slide! I really love to slide and it’s what I was known for when I played for the Community House Middle School team.” Do you play any other sports? “Playing travel ball with the Lady Tigers is a 10 1/2 month sport, so I only play softball.” Travel softball can lead to a lot of games on a hot summer day, what do you and your teammates do to battle the weather? “I have a great team and we have so much fun together on and off the fields. We play games, we sing and listen to music. We probably spend the most time watching other teams that are new to us play. It is hard when we have 14 hour days when it is 100 degrees, then we try to just stay cool.” How well do you perform in school? “I have been a member of the National Junior Honor Society for two years and I keep a 3.85 average in honors classes. I was an ambassador in 8th grade and helped tutor 6th graders. I am going to do volunteer work at the Y and am also a Leader in Training at the Y this summer. I am proud of the fact that I haven’t missed a day of school the last two years and only one in 6th grade!” Volume 6, Issue 6 SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT Page Wired for Excellence Award Recognizing Academic and Athletic Excellence MAGGIE COTTER Marvin Ridge Middle School 8th grader Maggie Cotter has been named the Quimby and Collins Sarah Post “Wired for Excellence” Award Winner. What are some of your top athletic accomplishments? “First Team All-Conference for three years, All-Region for two years, AllState for one year (senior year), and 2011 Clash of the Carolinas North Carolina Soccer Team” How did you and your soccer team fare this past season? “We were Southwestern 4A Conference Champions and went into the NCHSAA 4A State Championship having the record of 25-0; unfortunately we did not win, so our total record was 25-1.” What is your best memory from soccer? “My best memory from soccer would be my whole senior year season at Ardrey Kell because being my last year everything meant so much more. I loved bonding with my teammates – they are so fun and like best friends to me. Also, finally accomplishing that undefeated record to get to the state championship was incredible.” What will you miss most about playing soccer at Ardrey Kell? “I will miss my coach Jeff Mercado and his pushing me to be the best I could, also the amazing school spirit and fans that came to support and cheer us on, and mostly my teammates – after four years I have become so close to all of them.” Are there any obstacles you have overcome in order to succeed in soccer? “I have had to overcome a size obstacle only being 5 feet 2 inches tall. I have always had to play harder to How did you perform in the classroom at Ardrey Kell? “I had a weighted GPA of 5.0 at Ardrey Kell over my past four years. I received the Scholar Athlete Award for four years. I was in National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society along with many clubs. I have received the Presidential Scholar Award, CMS Scholar Award and the North Carolina Scholar Award. My favorite subjects are definitely math and science; I loved chemistry and calculus.” What led you to choose East Tennessee State University, and what are your goals for your college career? “I attended camps and made visits to the campus, and after spending time there and meeting the team and coaching staff, it just felt like the right fit for me! They offered my degree in which I am planning to major (chemistry with a minor in biochemistry), and I was also accepted in the Honors College for chemistry there. I am excited to continue my soccer career at a collegiate level, and I want to pursue my major to lead me to a career of research chemistry to work with cures for disease.” As you look back on your high school and youth sports career, would you like to thank anyone for helping you to succeed? “Of course, I have many people to thank. To start, my parents were extreme supporters of me and provided for me so I could do what I loved and to pursue my dreams. Next, I would like to thank all my coaches – Steve Davis, Adam Denton, Dan Dudley and Jeff Mercado – for guiding me to success and for believing in me as well. Finally, [I would like to thank] my teammates for all of their tough love, which included their encouragement and competitive edge to make me a better player.” Volume 6, Issue 6 Charlotte’s premier full service youth soccer organization catering to all levels of play.
