All Porsches are welcome at OVR PCA events. 3 Meyer’s Musing John Meyer · President, OVR PCA In which the President reviews the past two years in office and attempts to keep his eyeballs from sweating in the process. By the time this column reaches both loyal readers, the air cooled crowd will have retrieved the winter storage jack stands from the rear of the garage, drained the oil, and are now well into the third version of the winter maintenance and upgrade schedule. Who knows what the water cooled group does; maybe schedule an electron and electrolyte restoration program in anticipation of spring. But we wish them well in their efforts. Those of us, your President included, who are about to pass into the land of President emeritus feel constrained to take one last review of the previous two years followed by an optimistic forecast of the future. If both loyal readers were at the end of year social, and I hope that they had a good time, they have already heard this colloquy. My apologies to them for the repetition. I am happy to report that the club is in good shape. Membership is up by roughly 10% over the last two years. We have enough money for the foreseeable future to be able to do the stuff that we like to do. The inflow of younger volunteers to pick up the traces from us old guys gladdens my heart. And OVR has resurrected a number of things that we used to do in the past, but had recently fallen along the wayside. Things like tours and concours events. All of which, for anybody who has ever had anything to do with large organizations involved in the business of herding a diverse collection of type A personality cats, shows the synergy associated with a confluence of the four things in the previous paragraph. The more people we get, the more we find volunteers to mange the programs. The more we diversify the programs, the more people get enthused and so it goes. It makes me confident to say that Grant Karnes, incoming president, will do even better things in the next two years. I could list all of the people who have come out of the wood work to join the volunteer ranks and made this progress possible, but the editor would severely reprimand me for unnecessarily squandering valuable Bent Pylon pages and the person whom I unintentionally omitted would try to install a set of rubber carburetors and an unlimited slip differential in my 912. And all of you 912 drivers know how important each of the 90 neck snapping, heart thumping, adrenaline pumping horse powers are in a 912. 4 But to those of you who signed up in spite of not knowing what you were getting into, my thanks. I know that I have said it one too many times, but if it wasn’t for Porsches, I would not have any friends. These two years as President have increased my friendship ranks immeasurably. So while I apologize for shamelessly mutilating the MacArthur metaphor (and all previous mixed metaphors), it is time for an old President to fade into an extended agricultural excursion through China Beach with the hope of continuing to enjoy the warm friendship with all OVR members as soon as the tow vehicle extricates me from this maudlin and convoluted passing of the baton. And to Pat Ertel, wherever you and Mz. Laurie are, you were my inspiration for all of these columns. I know that I did not do you justice, but I tried. Von dem Redakteur Wade Huston- Editor, Bent Pylon It’s the last lap and I can see the checkered flag. This is the 26th issue that I’ve published and it is my last. My wife and I are moving to Florida where we can do Porsche Club events all year round. I am passing the baton to Josh Snyder who will take over as editor of the Bent Pylon next year. I’ve had a great time doing this and have certainly gotten more active in the club. It’s interesting to go to an event where most people know me. If you want to get to know more Porsche people, volunteer at the next event you attend. Here are several of my favorite experiences from my time in this position. The opportunity to talk with John Dixon and get a personal tour of his Taj Garaj was a great experience. What a fun guy to be around. He is missed. I also spent a couple of hours with Dick Weiss in his garage which is located under his house. His rare 356A Carrera GS Speedster that he has owned for 53 years was parked there waiting for the next outing. His Porsche stories were all interesting and his knowledge of 356’s is amazing. If you have a question about them, he is the go-to man. My sixth issue featured Mike Valentine having fun with his Porsche, a Carrera GT that he took to Putnam Park Racecourse to do laps and to be the PCA Club race pace car. A fun car and a fun experience. One of my ‘wow’ moments was opening an e-mail from Dave Gardner in which he told the story of losing his legs in a racing accident at Mid-Ohio and how he recovered to drive the track again. It is amazing what you can do if you try hard enough. If you missed it, find it in the December 2013 issue that is posted on the OVR website. All of the articles and photos I have been sent have been interesting to me and to many of the club members. Thank you to all that have submitted them. Please keep them coming to Josh Snyder so that he can make the Bent Pylon something that all club members will want to read. I mentioned in last month’s column that my wife and I would be attending the DE at Mid-Ohio. We had a great time and our Porsche ran great. The temperature could have been a little higher, but October in northern Ohio could have been much worse. It is always a treat at the track to see so many Porsches being enjoyed by their owners. Being passed by a GT3 on the back stretch while doing 120 mph is quite an experience. My wife must have enjoyed driving in the DE: she asked me what tracks are near where we will live in Florida. Sebring is only 2 hours away! I want to thank everyone for their compliments and comments on my work as editor of the Bent Pylon. Special thanks goes to Jill Buzzard for correcting all of my grammar mistakes. A very special thank you goes to my wife, Vicki, for all of her help and for being so supportive as I worked on each issue. I’ll end by saying... We’ll be having fun with our Porsches this month. Have fun with yours! It is tough to choose a favorite cover, but the one from April, 2014 with the photo from the Adams County road tour is hard to beat. Sometimes a photo just says “I should be on the cover.” Another great one was the July 2014 that used a picture taken by Patti Godofsky. It was the site of the line of Porsches in her rearview mirror during an OVR tour event. I am much more aware of what makes a good photo now that I actually have to publish them. “Yes Vicki, Turn 1 is where I spun (just for the experience at Mid-Ohio).” See an event recap on page 12 and page 14. 5 Speaker’s Corner Tech Session Josh Snyder - Bent Pylon Newsletter 2015 Editor John Patterson - Technical Committee member Member Spotlight From the Street to the Track As you may know, I’ll become the editor of the Bent Pylon beginning in 2015. Even before I knew Wade was stepping down, I was considering writing a monthly column that in some way, shape or form highlighted one of our 700+ members. What better time than during this transition to put my idea in motion. Hosted by Wright Motorsports I’ve come up with a couple of forms for this member spotlight. The first is similar to the Art & Canvas article by Nicolas Hunziker in Panorama each month where he asks a former or current Porsche related racing driver the same set of questions. They’re quick and easy to answer for the interviewee (even through e-mail) and quick and easy to read for everyone else in the newsletter. The second idea is a little more involved and would be more of a feature article. For any brave soul that volunteers, I would meet with you at your convenience and we’d have a conversation, most likely centered around Porsches and our love for, connection to and fascination with them. Maybe you have an idea for what the article could be about and maybe you don’t. I don’t have any preconceived idea about where the conversation would lead us. You don’t have to have the rarest Porsche ever built, the most unbelievable but true road trip story or anything else for that matter. The point is that everyone has an interesting and unique story to tell. There’s something fascinating about each one of our members that I’m willing to bet the other 700 members would love to hear about. If you’re interested in participating in either of these member spotlights, shoot me an e-mail at the address below. One final shameless plug: if you have ideas of something to write, please contact me. We’re always looking for content in the Bent Pylon. Even if you have an idea for an article but you’re not interested in writing it yourself, let me know and I’d be happy to write it for/with you. Josh Snyder – ovrbentpylon@gmail.com. Would you like to talk about your new Porsche or your old Porsche? Do you have something to say to the club? Say it in the Speaker’s Corner column. The subject is open as long as it pertains to the club and/or Porsches or is of interest to the club. E-mail it to ovrbentpylon@gmail.com. 6 Saturday, Dec. 6, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. 4009 Borman Dr., Batavia, OH 45103 The agenda and related details have now been finalized for the much anticipated Technical Session “From the Street to the Track.” Here’s a brief review of the agenda: • Welcome OVR, and review of current WMS race programs (John Wright and staff) • PCA Driver’s Education technical and safety requirements (Tom Crihfield, PCA OVR Safety Chair) • Model 911 996/997 and Boxster track preparation-levels of upgrades (Tim Combs and Bob Viglione, WMS staff members) • Box lunch/beverage provided by WMS, informal Q&As with technical staff The location is the Wright Motorsports race shop at 4009 Borman Drive, Batavia, OH (adjacent to the Clermont County airport). All OVR members and family members are welcome to attend including children. (But no sitting in the race cars will be allowed; and that applies to youngsters and oldsters!) No pre-registration is necessary; just show up at 10:00 a.m. sharp, please, on Saturday, December 6. As most Ohio Valley Region members probably know, Wright Motorsports is a nationally respected race preparation and track support organization specializing in Porsches. Their customers compete with success at all amateur and professional levels…PCA Driver’s Education, Porsche Club Racing, factory backed Porsche Cup Racing, and the nationally televised TUDOR-IMSA series. NOTE: WMS also provides a full range of maintenance services for “daily drivers” at their Batavia facility. In other words, these folks know Porsches! Almost 185 drivers descended upon one of the truly great road courses in the United States. Mid-Ohio is known to be a technically challenging course good enough for NASCAR and the Indy Cars to run on annually. Friday was cool in the morning and we had approximately eighty-five cars. Friday’s lapping day is designed for more advanced drivers (those who have had at least ten driver’s ed events) and instructors. This group of drivers was broken into two run groups; one for higher horsepower cars and one for lower horsepower cars. The weather turned nice and warm in the afternoon and all had a great day with a lot of track time. limit. So if you are new to DE’s and want to join us, please sign up early next year to reserve your spot and not get closed out of one of the most fun things you will ever do (in a car)! As the day continued it did warm up but we also got a few sprinkles of rain in the early afternoon. That rain did not deter most cars from going on the track. Sunday morning was even colder than Saturday but quickly warmed up. By 10:30 the chill was gone and the excitement of being on the track was evident. Most drivers had a chance to solo on this wonderful track at some point Sunday. The improvement from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon was astonishing as the amount of track time really helped all drivers increase their comfort levels and speed while still being very safe. All in all it was a great weekend. If you have never participated in a DE you really need to try one. There is nothing you need to do for your car, we have loaner helmets, just join us and smile. We do need to warn you ….it is easy to get hooked! Obviously an event of this size does not happen by itself. There are many people we need to thank for their assistance. First and foremost are Dale Timmester and Jerry Wolf, our two Chief Driving Instructors, and all of the instructors who were magnificent. Our region is known to have one of the best instructor groups and from the comments received, this tradition continued over the weekend. Friday evening was our traditional safety check, registration and pizza party. I have never ordered 44 pizzas before and the hungry crowd did major damage to the pizzas, a case of red wine, a case of white wine and too many beers to mention here. Additionally, salad, appetizers and wonderful desserts complemented the feast. We also had the opportunity to have most of the students meet their instructors and begin to get to know each other. Saturday morning was very chilly but everyone was excited to get on the track. I was thrilled that our D run group (designed for beginners or just one time DE participants) was filled with thirty drivers. We had to turn away eight drivers ten days before the event because the D group was at the 12 Thomas Crihfield and his tech group of Josh Snyder, John Meyer, and Christina Helm managed to tech over 100 cars Friday night and Saturday morning. 2014 Mid-Ohio Autumn Thunder DE Dennis Okin- Event Chair Photos by Ted Hunter and Wade Huston Friday night’s pizza party was expertly managed by Sandi Beck, Patti Godofsky and Marilyn Picconi and they also kept the food and drink replenished for the hungry hordes. Kathie Hunter made wonderful cookies and fudge. Also, thank you to Jill Buzzard, Herb Beck, Alan Godofsky, and Jerry Picconi for helping to set up before and clean up after the party. The Becks, Godofsky’s and Picconi’s were also involved in many behind the scene jobs: packing and unpacking cars, lugging boxes and hauling coolers, etc. There also were two young mystery men who loaded our SUV after the party with coolers that were extremely heavy. Helping my wife with registration were Kathie Hunter and Monica Lautz. From organizing, label making, registration, shopping and preparing the food and to everything else, my wife, Susan was incredible as usual! The weekend would not have been as successful without all of these folks. Thanks go to Kathie Hunter, Susan Okin, Monica Lautz, and Marilyn Picconi for all of their work. Thank you for your help and we look forward to seeing everyone next year. Classroom instructors Len Vanderjagt and Bob Habel. Line for technical inspection on Friday night. More event coverage on pages 16 & 17. The classroom was a place for discussions and a place to get warm. 13 Bourbon Trail Tour Notes Mark Wilson - OVR Member Photo by Mark Wilson Tom Cole coordinated the tour to Woodford Reserve Distillery on Sept. 20. It was limited to 20 cars. We took a tour of the distillery and we then motored to Wallace Station deli for lunch. It was featured on the TV show Diners, 14 Drive-ins and Dives. Great food there. Mild fall weather made for a great cruise through the beautiful horse farm area of Lexington and beyond. It is surprising how focused concentration can be such a stress reliever and yet so exhausting. This was the second DE event I have driven; Putnam Park in Indiana was my first several years ago. The two courses are vastly different and I truly enjoyed the tight, off-camber turns, and the elevation changes of Mid-Ohio. It was a beautiful time of year to be there as the leaves were in full color. The Friday evening pizza party was well-attended and you could feel the excitement as students met their instructors and there was much anticipation of the sessions to come over the next two days. The frivolity of Friday evening was subdued Saturday morning as we listened to Dennis Okin’s instructions at the driver’s meeting and began to mentally focus on working with our instructor and improving our driving skills. My first session at speed on the track was exhilarating just thinking of all the professional racers that had driven this same course and for the most part, the same line that I was learning. Through my instructor’s coaching I felt I improved every session that I drove. Saturday afternoon had been misty and light rain off and on. Some people in other run groups said the track was getting a bit “slippy.” But it was just cloudy for my last session, so my instructor and I went out. I was really glad we did as at that time there was hardly anyone on track. It was great fun pushing myself and driving my line without any other cars around. That is a rare occurrence at a DE weekend. Luckily we had taken several layers of clothing, but it was still quite chilly in the morning air. Later in the morning the sun came out and that made a huge difference. Sunday morning I rode with my instructor again and that further ingrained the turn-in points, places to carry more speed, and where to wait later to brake and shift. Riding with him made a huge difference in my learnings on Sunday. I felt I was getting more accurate and smoother in my next few sessions, and Sunday afternoon I was signed off to go solo. By this time a lot of people were starting to pack up and leave so it was another great time to be on track. My last session was so much fun and I think one of my fastest. On the cool-down lap I looked around to enjoy this great race track with the beautiful autumn colors all around. Thank you Dennis Okin, Jerry Wolf, Norm Falik (my instructor), Susan Okin, and all the other people who helped make this a great event. I am looking forward to my next driver’s education experience. Sunday morning brought really cold temps; a sign in Lexington on the way to the track displayed 34 degrees. Visit OVR’s website for the latest event information: ovrpca.org. 16 More Photos from the Mid-Ohio DE Photos by Vicki and Wade Huston A note to all photographers: The infield of Mid-Ohio is open to explore during events. Just stay inside the fences and don’t distract the on-track drivers. And send your best shots to Josh Snyder at ovrbentpylon@gmail.com to be used in the Bent Pylon. 17 VW & Porsche Reunion Recap C. Steve Nelson - OVR Concours Chair The 23rd Annual Reunion was held on September 28 at a new venue – Germania Park off Kemper Road in Cincinnati, Ohio. The day was beautiful and sunny with 100 Porsches, 14 Audis (several R8s), several singular exotic machines including one 1964 Porsche 904, and 150 VWs with several Dune Buggys for a grand total of 270 Cars! Photographs are great and were in last month’s Bent Pylon but you need to be at a show like this to enjoy the eye candy and to meet everyone. Bruce Meyer, the inventor of the Dune Buggy, was there to the complete enjoyment of the attendees. Awards were presented to owners in each car grouping and were received with smiles and applause. Congratulations to all Porsche winners: Paul Siegel, Ken Allison, Mary Siegel, Scott Dugan, Robert Coffey, Joe Fee, Don Gamble, Mark Crowthers, H&H Motors, Todd Huth, Mike Green, Steve Clark, Vince Quatromani, Tom Cole, Don Powell, Todd Tilson, Ben Brinker, Kurt Niemeyer, Bill Goepper, and Wade Huston. Much coordination went into making the show a success. The VW Club, the OVR Porsche Club, the Audi Club, and the management staff at Germania are responsible for this successful show, and of course, all those who brought their beautiful machines. Everyone agrees that Germania Park is a great place to host the VW & Porsche Reunion and awaits the 2015 event! Germania Park provides a German atmosphere with German food, drink and dress. Combine that with cars from Volkswagon, Porsche, Audi, and BMW and you have a wonderful show! The winter months and early spring months are the time to store your baby, do projects on it, and as the weather starts to warm, to ready it for driving, touring, and going to the car shows. Be sure to check the Bent Pylon and OVRPCA website for upcoming event information. See you at the Chili Cookoff in January!!!! My first year as Zone Rep has flown by, and I want to thank all of the Region Officers and members who helped to make this past year in Zone 4 a successful one. I was honored to be invited to and welcomed at so many wonderful events throughout the zone; I only wish that I could have attended even more. It has been an important goal of mine to continue to have our Zone work as 1 cohesive unit. Since each region is unique, a real effort was made to promote each region’s signature events throughout the zone thus providing a greater variety of activities to every Zone 4 member helping to enhance everyone’s PCA experience. During the past year, the Zone 4 website was updated, and plans are being made to further improve it for 2015. In addition, the Zone 4 Logo was re-designed, and will be unveiled next month. Just because we’ve put our cars away for the winter, it does not mean that we can’t experience the same camaraderie and friendship enjoyed during the driving season. In fact, many regions will be hosting Holiday Parties this month, and what a great way to kick off the holidays by celebrating with your “PCA family.” Looking ahead to 2015, plans are being made for the PCA preview at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Information will be sent out and/or posted as soon as details become available. And, set aside some time during the week of June 21 to attend the 60th annual Porsche Parade which will be very close to us in French Lick, Indiana. If you attended Parade in Traverse City a few years ago, you know how much fun it is.
