Lost Art is committed to the preservation and development of traditional crafts and arts. The company was born out of a search for historically accurate furnishings and services for landscape restorations. Since then we have drawn together a unique team, which includes blacksmiths, a whitesmith, stonemason and a family of carpenters – including one of the last remaining wheelwrights – along with workers using traditional skills that include pattern making, wicker working, carving and decorative painting. The collective experience and abilities of the people who make up Lost Art combine to produce unique landscape furnishings. Through the use of traditional craftsmen’s skills, we can recreate or restore the products of a bygone era. Our craftspeople can also create exceptional original designs or recrafted pieces, again to the highest quality standards of both design and materials. All pieces, whether bespoke or restored, are individually crafted to the requirements of the client. This ensures that they will fully complement the particular landscape for which they are intended. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS McClaren No. 1. A particularly rare design, recrafted by Lost Art from the McClaren Foundry design No.1 dating from circa 1884. The bench features intricate scrollwork with cast iron seat and backframe with fitted timber slats. It is available in 4ft 6in and 6ft 6in versions. In the photograph, the slats have been finished in the historically accurate Farrow and Ball Old White paint. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Squirrel Bench High Victorian design featuring animals within a naturalistic setting. Cast iron ends with hand chamfered oak slats. The design was first registered by the Sun Foundry, Glasgow in 1868. The original, on which our recrafted items are based, was sourced from the Pavilion Gardens in South Shields and other original examples can be found in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow and the gardens of the Smithsonian Institute in the USA to where the design was exported. Available in a full range of sizes from single-seat and finished to customer requirements - as are all items produced by Lost Art HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Lost Art offer services from a range of time-served craftsmen, renowned for their authenticity and attention to detail. Craftsmen currently involved in Lost Art include; stone masons, carpenters, wheelwrights, blacksmiths, whitesmiths, pattern makers, fabricators and a wicker weaver. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Italian Bench Based on the 19th Century Coalbrookdale Italian design, this elegant but substantial cast iron and timber bench features two griffins and a classical Italian face within the cast iron bench ends. The bench slats may be rendered in either hand-finished timber or cast iron – or a combination of these. As with other Lost Art products, the basic design is a starting point for us to reach an agreement with the client over what exactly is required for a particular location or project. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Detail from the Medieval bench Another particularly rare design within the Lost Art range, it is reproduced from a 19th Century Coalbrookdale Medieval pattern. Constructed from cast iron and selected timber. The original bench from which the Lost Art examples have been produced was sourced from a commission in which we restored a number of original benches and then produced further examples – indistinguishable from the originals – for a lottery funded project in Alexandra Park, Oldham. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS The Heskin Bench Ideal for local authority use, this simple, classical design with substantial cast iron ends incorporates a scrolled top with supporting hardwood slats and is braced with an iron frame for additional strength. The Heskin is suitable for use in high volume, high risk areas. For further security against wilful damage, the slats can be produced in box section metal rather than the more traditional timber. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS The Lost Art team includes Lancashire’s last remaining team of wheelwrights – a particularly specialised and demanding aspect of both carpentry and metal working. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Grizebeck Seat This attractive rustic cast iron bench with well seasoned hardwood slats dates from the late nineteenth century. It is available in single, two or three-seater versions. This bench may be well suited to an area where historical accuracy is required, but patterns of usage demand utilising a substantial or robust design of seating. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Thornythwaite Seat. An attractive rustic bench design, features cast iron bench ends and seasoned timber slats. Available in single, two or three-seater versions – this bench has lent itself to adaptations of the design for a number of projects, according to location and pattern of usage. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Metal work – both restoration and fabrication is carried out by our increasingly recognised team of blacksmiths and whitesmiths. Lost Art can provide expertise in the design and sourcing of unusual sections of metal that may be required for historically accurate or specially commissioned work. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Detail from a restoration project at Smithills Hall, Bolton – a Grade 1 listed building. The project was financed under the terms of European Objective One and implemented under the control of the Local Authority. The photograph shows replacement inlaid scrolled sections, reforged wrought iron collars and cast iron finials which were replicated by loose pattern casting from remaining sections of the gate , then cast welded into the sections of the gate where these details were missing or damaged. Other work undertaken on the same project has involved the design, fabrication and installation of period authentic fencing, benches and the design and production of picnic tables which incorporate elements of Victorian design into furniture reflecting modern patterns of usage. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Belmont Tree Seat A substantial piece, suitable for use in public or private areas. Constructed in hand-crafted and riveted ironwork, zinc plated, primed and painted to client specifications. Developed by Lost Art from a 19th Century design in Congleton Park, Cheshire. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS One of a number of gates replicated from existing on-site gates at Smithills Hall, Bolton. Lost Art provided a full service, including the production of working drawings, manufacturing and installation of the gates. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Regency period, hand-forged, hand-crafted spring seats. This project involved restoring two original examples of this seat and then producing two perfect replicas. This was achieved using authentic traditional techniques and materials, including hot-punching, the production of hand-forged rivets and tenon joints. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS A combination of skills and materials. This timber and wrought iron bench was originally restored by Lost Art then reproduced using traditional methods. The benches, originating from a London park, are more detailed than they first appear, as the wooden slats are curved in cross-section, requiring additional attention to detail and hand-finishing HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Lost Art designed, fabricated and installed this version of their ‘Game-Proof’ fencing. Versions of this fencing have been exported and installed in both Europe and America. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS A stonemason is the latest addition to the range of skilled craftsmen operating within the Lost Art organisation. As with all other skill areas, we are happy to provide for either restoration of existing items, or the production of newly commissioned work. The Lost Art service can include either or both research and design elements as we endeavour to create a true partnership with the individuals or organisations with whom we work. HISTORIC LANDSCAPE FURNISHINGS Lost Art were selected to supply several key components for the million pound lottery funded project involving the restoration and regeneration of the Whitworth Institute in Derbyshire. The image shows a Lost Art whitesmith working on the replication of the park’s distinctive Victorian copper lanterns. In addition to this, Lost Art craftsmen were also commissioned to both restore and reproduce a large number of Coalbrookdale cast iron and timber benches, recraft wooden gates, supply specialist carved wooden decorations and furnishings and reproduce a number of large stone urns. Our involvement in the project began with us conducting historical research and providing information and advice to the project coordinators prior to the submission of the successful lottery bid. This input, from initiation to completion thoroughly demonstrates the range and quality of service that Lost Art can provide.
