BOARD MEMBERS
We are committed to offering support to oncology families so they feel less isolated, frustrated and fearful in dealing with
the problems that cancer can manifest within the family structure. By the age of 20, one child or teen in 330 is diagnosed
in the United States. More children die of cancer than of any other disease, including asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis,
congenital anomalies and AIDS, COMBINED.

Childhood Cancer Foundation hosted its 16th Annual Spring Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 12, at the Yucaipa Community
Park for children who have cancer and their families.
Over 150 participants joined in the Spring Bash. A special guest, the Easter Bunny, was at the park with over 6,000 stuffed
plastic eggs and Easter baskets for all the children. The Easter bunny led the children in a variety of group games and
dances that included the “Hokey Pokey.”
A very special thank you to all of our donors: City of Yucaipa, Cardenas Markets, The Art Institute of California - Inland
Empire, Coca-Cola, National Charity League, Ramrod Crafters, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #777, Terrill Wickham, Citrus
Hill High School, George & Sharon Apker, Elena Klopfer and Phillip Brenton. And of course our wonderful volunteers, this
event wouldn’t be possible without you.
Every smile makes all our hard work worth it. You can’t help but smile yourself when you see the patients and their siblings
having a blast.
California - Inland Empire, Coca-Cola, National Charity League, Ramrod Crafters, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #777,
Terrill Wickham, Citrus Hill High School, George & Sharon Apker, Elena Klopfer y Phillip Brenton.

CCFSC Board members hosted an amazing Cinco de Mayo dinner on unit 4800 the evening
of May 5th. All the families on the unit (as well as some very lucky nurses!) enjoyed a very
tasty meal of shredded beef with the works! Dancing Chicken, Rice, beans, salsas, guacamole
and chips, or as we called it: the “Sampler.” The conference room was transformed into a
Mexican Fiesta with lots of decorations and festive music. And you can’t forget dessert! We
had yummy home-baked cupcakes and cookies. Delicious! A special thank you to Jose’s
Mexican Food Restaurant and all the Board Members for preparing wonderful dishes and
making this dinner possible.

HAIR CUT-A-THON
More than 50 participants joined Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California for the 2016 Hair Cut-AThon event at the Riverside City College Cosmetology School on May 14th. Haircuts, head shaves, manicures
and face painting was available for a minimal donation. Jade and Davis, two of our heroes joined us at the
event to assist in shaving heads and cutting 12-inch hair donations.
Davis was more than excited to work the clippers and shave Michael Cook’s head. Cook, a Fort Irwin Firefighter,
planted the seed for this event and fundraiser by calling Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California
in 2005 and offering to have his head shaved by a child with cancer to show his support of all those fighting
this disease.
CCFSC raised close to $2,000 and collected 122 foot-long donations that were sent in to Wigs for Kids, an
organization dedicated to providing wigs for children with cancer. Throughout the years, the group has
collected more than 397 such donations with the support of the community. Thank you to Michael Cook, the
Riverside City College Cosmetology School, and all our volunteers for their support of this amazing event!

SPOTLIGHT ON HOPE FILM CAMP
Spotlight on Hope (SOH) serves as a therapeutic outlet for cancer patients and siblings where they gather together to create and write scripts to the short films they want
to produce. They create CG animations or act in front of a giant green screen, while one patient is holding the microphone, the other is recording and the others are acting
to the scripts that they wrote. After the production process is completed, a grand red carpet screening is held for them, their families and friends.
Childhood Cancer Foundation families participated in camp sessions this spring. The Red Carpet Screening was held on May 15th where they were able to take pictures
with Cassie Nguyen on the red carpet. Cassie, the founder of the SOH program, began the evening with an introduction speech to greet the guests. Followed by Spotlight
on Hope’s Testimonial Video, previous 4 live action films (produced by Ramon Hamilton from Think Ten Media Group), Anna Wittenberg’s Gluck SOH Film (Gluck Fellow
and UCR Art Graduate Student), our current CG Animations (produced by UCR Students), and SOH Group Slideshow. After viewing all the films, patients who participated
in the film making came up to the stage for a Q&A session to address how they got inspired to create their films. At the same time, participants received Certifications of
Completion and DVD copies of the films. SOH Board Members were also acknowledged at the event for all their hard work throughout the year.
SPOTLIGHT ON HOPE FILM CAMP

Teen Connection is a service to adolescents who have been
diagnosed with cancer. Being a teen is very difficult and
having cancer compounds that difficulty. Being able to
speak and interact with other teens experiencing cancer
can be helpful. This is where Teen Connection steps in. Teen
Connection meets various times throughout the year. For

MEDIEVAL TIMES
Teen Connection welcomed the New Year with a feast and a show at Medieval Times
in Buena Park in January. The group cheered on their Black and White Knight as
they enjoyed a meal of the medieval century, roasted chicken – or as they called
it: baby dragon! - with ribs and many more delicious treats. We were transported
“to an age of bravery and honor” where we witnessed epic battles and amazing
horse performances. It was definitely a show and meal to remember!

disneyland
On February 7, Teen Connection got together for their annual trip to Disneyland in
Anaheim. For some, this was their first visit to Disneyland and we are honored to
be able to offer this experience to our teens. We started the day off at Disneyland
then made our way over to Disney’s California Adventure. Before heading home
we finished the night with some souvenir shopping.
We would like to thank Carl Colby, Tracy Thompson and Stater Bros. Charities for
their generosity with this trip, your support allows us the opportunity to offer
this trip to all the teens. HUGE thank you to our chaperones for the day, Kristin,
Colleen, and Phillip.

gameworks
Teen Connection enjoyed a night of arcade fun at Gameworks in Ontario on March
5th. We started off the night with dinner with Gameworks. Once we had our fill of
our delicious meals we headed out to the various game rooms to start the fun. We
all had a blast racing one another, playing arcade games and so much more. There
were so many things to play it was difficult to choose what we should do. Everyone
had a great time and we would like to thank GameWorks for their hospitality.
