Rockwell Park Summer Festival, August 16th
This year’s Rockwell Park Summer Festival, held Saturday, August 16 from 10 am to
6 pm, promises to surpass last year’s incredibly successful event, with new and returning
bands and musical acts, athletic competitions, great new and returning food and craft
vendors and many additional featured activities. Held to showcase and celebrate
Rockwell Park, this festival is hosted and sponsored by The West End Association,
with financial support from several local organizations and businesses. Thomaston
Savings Bank, Bristol Hospital, Liberty Bank, Wheeler Clinic, United Bank and the
Bristol Republican Town Committee have already stepped up as sponsors, and the
West End Association welcomes additional sponsors.
Events will include basketball, volleyball and skateboard competitions, an antique
car show, an art show, and the hugely popular “Kid’s Zone,” run by Imagine Nation
Museum and sponsored by Liberty Bank. Many new food, crafts and service vendors
will attend, buoyed by last year’s record turnout of more than 10,000 visitors to this
completely free event.
The Festival also will feature a “Wing Ding,” where local restaurants famous for their
barbecued chicken wings will compete for “Best of Show” designation – based on
votes from patrons. A free raffle for a 42-inch flat screen television will be held
for everyone who completes a raffle ticket at the Festival entry area. The winner
doesn’t have to be on site for the drawing, held late in the day, but entries are in-person
only. The television has been generously donated by Bobroske Construction and Tim
Bobroske, vice president of The West End Association.
For more information on the Festival, visit
www.facebook.com/WestEndAssociation, and click on “events.”

New Businesses and Activity in the West End
A hearty welcome goes out to Corner Stop Deli on the corner of West and Pleasant Streets, and to the newly reopened
grocery and deli at the intersection of Routes 69 and 72. Also, Oak Hill and the Bristol Boys and Girls Club have
announced plans to renovate and convert the former Family Center site at 47 Laurel Street and turn it into a $4.3 million
fitness center devoted solely to the needs of the disabled.
The first of its kind in New England, Chapter 126 Sports & Fitness will serve participants from 76 towns within a
20-mile radius with year-round adaptive sports, including wheelchair basketball and handball, power soccer, goal ball and
more. Additionally, the new Bristol Boys and Girls Club Center, rising on West Street, is on schedule to open this fall.
Candice Anderson, a certified Consulting Hypnotist and Pastoral Care Specialist, has opened a new Hypnotherapy
Suite at 146 Laurel Street. For information and appointments, call (860) 280-7265, or visit her online at www.
hypnosissuiteconnect.com.
Congratulations, also, to Dori Green, owner of Artist’s Tree Tea House and Gallery 156 (located at 156 School
Street), who – in addition to her delicious teas, coffees and food – has been hosting music, art shows, poetry readings,
open-mike nights and much more. Please visit her on Facebook, at www.facebook.com/ArtistTreeTea
And finally, The West End Café – located at 8 Divinity Street (formerly Paris Sports Bar), has reopened with a new
name, a new interior look and a new menu. Visit their Facebook page for events and specials, and please support all the
merchants in our City’s West End.

The mission of the West End Association is to help create and maintain a safe, friendly, and family oriented neighborhood,
filled with thriving businesses, convenient public transportation, and attractive amenities and activities. We envision that
people in our neighborhoods will demonstrate their pride by taking responsibility for the ongoing care of their homes and
businesses, the parks and river, and one another.
For gardeners, community garden plots are available at O’Connell School!
Spots are limited, and cost $15 annually. For more information, call the Bristol Community Organization
at (860) 584-2725, and ask for Mr. Morrow.

Since our last issue in January, a lot of effort has gone into working with City government and Departments to help improve
our streets, reduce blight, and ensure code enforcement. An obvious police presence in the West End – particularly at the
intersection of School and West Streets – has helped reduce vagrancy, drug activity and loitering on sidewalks and in
store fronts. There has been an exodus of some less-appealing businesses and those not complying with City zoning and
health laws, and we are working to bring new businesses to the intersection and surrounding streets.

Our second annual “Taste of Bristol,” held in March, was a huge success. Thanks to the more than 30 participating Bristol
restaurants and food establishments, the 1,000 discount ticket purchasers, and the merchants who donated gift certificates
for our raffle.

Association activities. Thanks for your continuing support, and please come talk to us and be part of the revitalization
and improvement of the West End.
