Choosing a
sewing machine
There is much debate about the virtues of top loading versus front loading bobbin
systems but we have found that, especially for teaching environments, the top
loading systems give the best experience.
The bobbins are easier
to load, the seethrough plastic cover
has clear threading
instructions and
students can see how
much thread is on
the bobbin without
removing it.
Clear plastic bobbins
are also less expensive
than the metal bobbins
often required for
Janome 525S
front loading systems.
Although manufacturers will claim that top loading bobbins are jam proof, jams
may still occur if the bobbin is badly wound, however the rotary hook system in top
loading machines ensures fewer jams. There is also no need to load the bobbin into a
metal bobbin holder prior
to fitting which can be
fiddly and frustrating.
Which top loading
machine you buy will
depend not only on your
budget but also on the
complexity of work and
frequency of use.

mechanical which
means the stitches
are set and controlled using cam-wheels and gears. Stitch accuracy and control
is limited to the accuracy of these mechanisms which, while very good, are not as
accurate as a computerised machine where accurate motors and levers are used to
control the sewing needle.
A computerised machine’s greater accuracy gives a better quality stitch and a
greater choice of stitch type. They tend to be quieter in operation, have variable
speed control and can be used without the foot control making them accessible to
all students regardless of physical ability. Prices of computerised machines have
reduced significantly and now represent
excellent value. The flexibility of

You can’t go far wrong by ordering our best selling embroidery machine, the Janome

Janome MC350E Start Up Set
To get the best performance and fully enjoy
using the Janome MC350E it’s important to
use the right thread and needles. Although
it’s tempting to use whatever thread
there is to hand, you should always use
embroidery thread such as our SureStitch
Viscose Rayon Embroidery Thread
(pages 66-67). If the thread you use is not
designed for embroidery machines it may
cause puckering and ruin a piece of work.
The same can be said in terms of choosing
the right bobbin thread. Bobbin thread
is strong but finer than the top thread. It
is designed to cope with the speed of an
embroidery machine and balances evenly,
preventing show through on the top side of
your embroidery design. For more Janome

Needle Size – Fabric Thickness and Thread Size
Always choose the correct needle size for your fabric thickness
AND your thread thickness.
Voile
Fabric thickness, use:
Silk/taffeta
70/10 - For light fabrics such as silk and taffeta. A thicker needle
would leave holes in the fabric.
80/12 - For medium fabrics such as cotton, linen and satin.
Cotton/linen/satin
90/14 - For medium to heavy fabrics. An ideal in-between size.
100/16 - For heavy fabrics such as denim, tweeds, and upholstery
fabrics.
Also consider thread thickness:
Denim/tweed
With thicker thread you should use a heavier needle however using
a heavy needle to stitch a heavy thread on a fine fabric will leave
holes in your fabric. Instead, choose a medium size needle.
Leather
e.g. heavy thread (usual needle size 120/19) stitched onto cotton
(usual needle size 80/12) – compromise, choose needle size 100/16.
N.B. Make sure you try out your work on fabric scraps first!
NM = metric size designation. E.g. NM100 means that the needle is
1.0mm in diameter measured above the scarf or the short groove
(but not at any reinforced part of the blade).
The system in use for household sewing machine needles is 130/705
H. Household needles conforming to this system all have a flattened
shank for perfect positioning in the machine. All of our needles
conform to this system.
Singer = the Singer size designation which is still in use throughout
the world, and especially in the United States.
Needle sizes are usually written as NM/Singer size e.g. 80/12.

bobbins. Never use metal bobbins as they interfere
with the magnetic hook system, damaging the bobbin case

We have an approved list of Sewing Machine
Engineers who work on our behalf all over the UK.
Our approved engineers work to exacting standards and
are authorised by Heart Educational to carry out work at
our customer’s premises and charge you directly.
Simply call our office and tell us what machines you have and
what service and/or repair work you require to be carried out. We
will put you in touch with your local engineer who will call you
to provide a quotation and arrange an appointment pending an
official purchase order from your establishment.
Service.
Our approved engineers service most models of machines suitable
for education use. Servicing of machines can be done on site in a
school/establishment.
Please note that some areas (such as the Highlands and Islands
of Scotland) are not covered with our on site engineer service.
We may ask you to send the machines to one of our engineer’s
workshops provided suitable packaging and transportation can be
arranged.
We offer a basic service for Mechanical Machines, Computerised
Embroidery and Overlocking Machines.
Any faults found will be reported to you. Resulting additional
work required or recommended will also be reported to you and
an estimate of the cost given where requested. If you require the
work to be done, the engineer will need a purchase order. It may
be possible to carry out this repair work on site or it may require
workshop facilities. The engineer will be able to advise you at the
time. Please note, servicing does not include repairing or replacing
damaged parts. The engineer will not issue PAT test certificates
but will aim to service to the standard required for the test.
