We are going to learn in the next few days what tools to use when measuring our greatness and the greatness of the camps we serve. “Ministry Requires Service.” We want to thank you for your dedication and service to camp ministry and lives that are changed because of that sacrifice. I know that Tommy and John Thomas will challenge us in our life and in our ministry to continue to SERVE! Consider others before yourself. Clearly, we live in a very self-centered society. Most of us have grown so accustomed to our “me-first” culture that we are suspicious of any person who demonstrates a genuine “other-first” attitude. As Christians, however, we have been called to a different standard—one that requires us to put the interest of others ahead of our own. Take time over the next few days to spend time looking at Philippians 2 and learn to be like Jesus. He came to SERVE, not to be served. Take time in the next few days to detach yourself from everything, and focus on what God is doing in your life now and in the future. The Measure of Greatness! However, even experienced camp workers may find ways to “re-tool” their ministry. A complimentary copy of the New Camp Workers Handbook will be given to each attendee. Targets of Excellence ¨ Do you have a clear cut picture of what your first few years priorities should be? ¨ Is there a well-defined job description for you? What expectations are there for your family? ¨ How does the Board structure function? Does it fit your leadership style? ¨ Do you have a good picture of all of the area’s of the camp that are necessary for an effective Camp Ministry? Developing A Sustainable Funding Model for Camps/Nonprofits Joey Westbrook Having a great program will not be enough to achieve your mission, especially with all of the uncertainty in the economy and shrinking church mission budgets. Camps and nonprofits must develop a funding model that can provide a level of stability and produce the revenue required to grow and maintain mission with integrity. In this workshop we will discuss the importance of understanding the organization’s current funding strengths and weaknesses, identify new funding resources, and develop the legal and ethical systems required to protect your mission while expanding the resources necessary for growth. Targets of Excellence: 1. Does your board have a good understanding to the organization’s current funding strengths and weaknesses? 2. Have you done an evaluation of the health of your partner churches? 3. Do your by-laws, policies and partner churches support the changes necessary for sustaining your ministry? 4. Evaluate the potential market in your area and determine if you can reach groups outside your geographic area. Today’s Website Design & Smart App Integration BG Hamrick How long has it been since you redesigned your website? How do you use media to market your camp? Hamrick Inc. is a fast growing company that can help get your website looking cutting edge and tie in a Smart App to your camp that will help keep people connected to your ministry. Targets of Excellence Website Design - A website can enhance your organization in many ways. Social Media - The ability to engage in digital conversation with your community and followers is a luxury that we never had in the traditional marketing world. Mobile App - 10 years ago, many ministries felt a website was unnecessary; today 60% of new visitors choose which church to visit by the church’s website alone! Easy Street or Betting Your Bottom Dollar? Fundraising is a Hard Knock Life. Cherish Edwards 1. Your Camp Finances. What is your financial past? Are you at your Bottom Dollar? Where do you view your financial future? Dream about finding Easy Street 2. Today's Donor Base. Who is giving? What are they giving to? What will they avoid giving to? 3. Creative Fundraising solutions. Grants, Endowments, Support Ministries, Events, Daycare, Rentals, etc... ADMIN 2/HUMAN RESOURCE Track Leader: Steve Bornemann Tom Burbrink Tax Law Changes Affecting Camps and Churches Tom Burbrink Does your camp qualify for Health Insurance Tax Credit refunds for 2011, 2012 and 2013? Will your health insurance premiums paid by the camp be part of taxable income? Should you file as a “regular” employee or as a “minister” employed by the camp? Can you exempt out of Social Security? If so, should you? If You Want Your Message to Stick…Tell a Story Wendy Redmon How does a leader inspire people to follow a new vision? By using compelling stories to illustrate the vision. The idea that a leader should have excellent communication skills is not ground-breaking, but what makes ideas stick? Leaders need to engage people in a new direction when they have to build trust and inspire positive attitudes. It’s the reason Steve Jobs sold millions of iPods by skipping the technical specifications and simply stating that one thousand songs could now fit in your pocket. It’s the reason trial lawyers appeal to a jury’s human emotions as much as the letter of the law. When we need to persuade people about ideas, we tell stories. Targets of Excellence: You will learn: Why story telling is so powerful! When to tell a story? Which story to tell? How to design a good story. Fast Thinking: How to become skilled at thinking on your feet Wendy Redmon Does your mind freeze up at the most inopportune times? Do you think of the perfect thing to say ... later? Are you ever called upon impromptu to speak before a group? Do you blurt out the first thing that comes to your mind? If your answer to any of these questions is “YES”! This session is for you! Targets of Excellence: You will learn how to: Buy time. Think in Threes. Learn how to take a question up or down a level. Quickly organize your thoughts using a simple acronym. Workshop Descriptions Planning for Life After Ministry Are you putting enough into your retirement account? Where will you live when you retire? When should you start drawing your Social Security benefits? What health insurance will you need in addition to Medicare? 13 FACILITY Workshop Descriptions 14 Track Leaders: Dan Roberts, Jim Mann Google forms for Maintenance. Lance Powers Focus will be on vehicle and maintenance service records. Illustration of what this can do: I walk into a building and find that a wall switch plate has come loose from the wall. I click on a short cut on my phone that takes me to a form with drop down windows. Select my name, select building a am in, select nature of item (electrical, plumbing, etc.), add short not that plate is broke, hit submit (this takes me about 20 seconds with a short note). The maintenance director receives an email that the form was modified. He then review the item and fixes the problem. He now adds notes and marks complete. There is now a record of the issue. Targets of Excellence: 1. Learning to create a google form for vehicle and maintenance service records. 2. Learn to set up google forms so all staff can access forms via computer and smartphone. 3. Learn to Manage the data collected. HVAC 101. Getting a handle on the basics Scott McClimans It’s 7:30 on a Friday evening and the retreat group you just checked-in informs you that there is no heat/AC in the retreat center. Now what? Learning, advance planning and preparation are the keys to knowing how best to answer this question. A general troubleshooting process will be discussed along with preventive maintenance issues for various types of HVAC systems. Targets of Excellence: -Do you have a systems approach to overall facility maintenance? -Have you developed a HVAC preventive maintenance schedule? -Do you consider service providers a resource or an expense? -What educational resources have you explored to develop key competencies and build essential skills? Small Engine Repair Bill Greenwood Whether used constantly or occasionally, we all struggle at times with power equipment breakdowns. Keeping your power equipment in excellent running condition begins at the time of purchase. But when breakdowns occur, where should you begin to find the problem? This workshop will give you the tools you need to confidently perform maintenance, tackle troubleshooting, make the repair and get back up running with a minimum of down-time. Targets of Excellence How can I purchase quality equipment that will go the long haul? My 4 stroke engine won't run, now what? My 2 stroke engine won't start, what should I do? How can I keep my diesel equipment running good? GUEST SERVICE Track Leader: Nancy Stone Targets of Excellence: Week day vs. weekend vs. summer groups? A lump sum price or per person pricing? Pricing for multiple venues? Supervised activities (zip line, pool, etc…)? Deposits? Minimum number for groups? Paperwork for Rental Groups? Policies and Procedures manual? Christian Camping Without Compromise Holding Jesus high in the midst of a compromising culture. Ross Knecht Jesus modeled what it means to love in all circumstances. He also demonstrated in His ministry the ability to cross racial, ethnic and social barriers all while never compromising the standard. In this workshop we will discuss Christian camping as an outreach for the lost and an equipping opportunity for the young believer as cultural and social acceptance of various behaviors conflict with Biblical values and beliefs. § Implemen ng Code of Conduct guidelines for volunteers, staff and campers § The importance of having a clear and detailed Statement of Faith § Defining: o Discrimina on (vs. Enforcing Biblical Values) o The Church vs. non-profit – Religious Organiza on § Poten al Legal Implications and real scenarios some organizations are facing related to Upholding Religious Values Food service/Guest Services (Combined) Allergies: From Registration to Dessert Linda Rice, Jennifer Hicks Food allergies can be life threatening and can happen without warning. Camp staff and parents must work together to prevent accidental exposure. Being the hands and feet of Christ, we want to reassure parents their camper is safe at camp. By increasing education of life threatening food allergies, we can better protect and prevent unnecessary harm to our camp guests. What level of Excellence do YOU want to provide? Targets of Excellence Do you have a plan in place to handle food allergies at your camp? What is the plan for tracking allergies prior to camper arrival? What is the plan for tracking allergies while camper is at your camp? How do you deal with parents who have strong food preferences (not allergies) for their campers? Workshop Descriptions Pricing, Policies and Procedures for Rental Groups Panel Discussion Chris Osborne-Butler Springs Tina Rooks—Woodland Lakes Josh Miller—Mahoning Valley This workshop will be informal as we will encourage attendees to ask lots of questions and pick the panel members and other attendees brains so that each can learn and grow from how other camps approach/manage rental groups. Rental income has the POTENTIAL to be a large percentage of a camp’s operating budget for the year, so why not gather new ideas, polish up on existing procedures, or share “gold nuggets” with others in this Panel Workshop? We will take a look at these three camps (rental incomes ranging from small—under $30,000; medium—$30,000 to $80,000; and large—$80,000+) and discuss what resources/information/prices/etc…that works best for them when it comes to the following (and hopefully more) questions/issues: 15 Food Service Do’s and Don'ts of Food service Workshop Descriptions 16 Track Leader: Kelly Fulcher Kelly Fulcher/Diana Fulmer This is an informal workshop discussion some of the Do’s and Don’t of cooking for large groups and working in a camp kitchen with input from veteran camp cooks. We will also share menus and recipes from several of our Camps both large and small. Veteran Camp Cooks Share Ideas Diana Follmer, Alan & Vickie Cooper, Linda Rice This Panel discussion will offer an opportunity for Food Service Staff to ask questions about anything and everything that goes on in the kitchen from menu planning to ordering food, to serving and clean up. We especially encourage those new to camp cooking to bring a list of questions and discussion topics. Our goal is to encourage and equip those that have a key role in how campers view camp. PROGRAMMING Track Leaders: Mark Campbell, Gary Baker How Effective Is Your Program Sam Willard Evaluating a program sometimes can be a challenging task, yet other times it is an easy thing to assess. During this workshop we will be taking time to create a baseline that will be used to help evaluate current or future programs. Targets of Excellence: How do you measure your programs? Why and how to start new programs? When do you need to end a program? Where’s the Nurse Jennifer Sears Paid/Volunteer Qualifications: Rn, Lpn, etc State Requirements: State Health Inspection Minimum Requirements: CPR, 1st Aid, Wilderness 1st Aid Session or Full Summer Position Policy, Procedure, Physician Orders Camper Registration: The Day of a Typical Camp Nurse Missions Possible. Making Missions Part of your Camp Program. Bruce Cameron, Gary Baker What if you raised the bar in your camp when it comes to missions that you support? Help campers establish a relationship with missionaries that might encourage some to enter into the mission field. How to transition from weekly missionaries to supporting one missionary for the summer The advantage of Long-term Partnerships with missionaries Connect campers with missionaries for short-term mission trips Help create a culture of missions at your camp SPIRITUAL Track Leaders: Bob Phillips, Scott McClimans The Importance of Leadership: Taking a Sabbatical Barry Cameron The Power Of A High Standard Work Ethic Lance Powers The importance of a camp leader setting the pace/example for his team. Target 1: What does the Bible say about work ethic? Target 2: What is the difference between a good worker and a workaholic. Target 3: What is best, leading from the front or the back? The Ministry Blur: Finding Focus Amidst the Demands! Wendy Fitzgerald (For Women Only) Is ministry measuring up to your ideals? Has the messiness of ministry taken the joy out of service? Do you long for kingdom impact, but find yourself too busy to allow your heart to engage? If you are a woman in ministry or have a spouse in ministry, this session is for you! Targets of Excellence: You will be encouraged as we discover: Why ministry is so difficult How to focus your kingdom vision Three “top secret”, stress-relieving tactics for serving the kingdom AND balancing life! Workshop Descriptions Camp Leaders And The Discipline of Celebration Tommy Oaks Targets of Excellence: 1. The Discipline of Celebration includes a plan for rest. 2. The Discipline of Celebration includes wholesome laughter. 3. The importance of planning for enjoyment and fun---how do you do it, and why? 17 Workshop Leaders 18 Gary Baker - Gary has served 7 years at Hanging Rock Christian Camp as Executive Director. For 6 years he was the manager at Wonder Valley Christian Assembly. He came on staff at Rainbow Christian Camp in 1989. He developed programs like WorkStudy, Jungle Huts, Thai Huts, Wilderness, High Adventure, and the 2 year Internship. I don’t really like writing bios because it makes me look like there is something to take pride in. What I have learned is that my greatest passion must be to know Christ. That’s it. The only thing that will last beyond these few years is the relationships I have invested in. The first of those must be my relationship with God. I want to seek Him and be found in Him. Everything I have and am flows from Him. “He is the air I breathe. He is my daily bread.” I am reminded of John 15 where Jesus says, “If a man remains in me, and I in Him, he will bear much fruit; Apart from me, you can do nothing.” My greatest passion is world missions, I love being a part of other missionaries lives and helping young people follow God whole heartedly as he leads them to reckless abandon in Him. My call over and over again has been to the lost and the disenfranchised…to the least of these. To storm the gates of hell and rescue children from the darkness. Alan Cooper: Alan (and his wife, Vickie) attended Camp Calvary as kids and never dreamed they would ever be managing it's operations. Alan came to Camp Calvary in January 1989 from a successful job as head of maintenance for Don Jacobs Oldsmobile-Honda, where his duties included building and ground maintenance for 3 car dealerships and 4 rental properties. The responsibilities at Don Jacobs fit right in with what Camp Calvary needed in 1989. And, since Alan was the only employee, he and Vickie did everything that needed to be done. 2013 begins their 26th year at Camp Calvary. And Alan says, "I can't imagine doing anything else. God has blessed us beyond measure. Because of Camp, our family has been exposed to so many great Christian people and have had so many wonderful experiences. God is good." Alan & Vickie have 5 children, 2 grandchildren, one on the way in January and 2 arriving sometime soon from Bulgaria. Cherish Edwards: Cherish, a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, has been in camp management for just over 3 years. Prior to entering the field of Christian Camping, Cherish served as the Ministry Representative for Oblong Children's Christian Home for 5 years. It was there that she got her feet wet in the field of donor development and fundraising. Cherish has a husband, 2 daughters and loves serving at Lake Region Christian Assembly in Northwest Indiana. Wendy Fitzgerald – Wendy is the co-founder, speaker, and author for If Then Movement. Wendy imparts powerful and compelling teaching through her writing and speaking. Wendy's presentation style will bring "the complete package" to your next event. With over a decade in full time ministry and a background in theater, Wendy naturally employs humor, drama and story-telling to communicate the deep truth of God's Word. Captivating audiences with her unique style, Wendy shares her passion for the Scriptures in a way that inspires, encourages, and blesses each listener. Daughter of the King…with deepest gratitude! Wife of One… in love forever… in “like” on most days. Mother of Five…through birth and adoption. Bill Greenwood - is the “Minister of MacGyvering” at Oil Belt Christian Service Camp. He has ministered in New Zealand and Southern Illinois. Bill formerly managed a lawn equipment store in Lawrenceville, IL and built Toyota trucks for a short period of time. He is a self-taught “Jack of all Trades.” He has been married to Missy for over 25 years. They have 3 children who are students at Johnson University and missionaries. Jennifer Hicks - Jennifer has served as the Guest Service Coordinator at Camp Allendale for 14 years. She is the office point person, books all retreats and oversees all the summer camp registrations. Along with working at Allendale, she also serves at her church as a biblical counselor and participates in the church’s jail ministry taking the gospel to those in need. Jennifer and her husband, Ken, have three children and one grandchild. They live on a small farm close to the camp where they raise chickens, prawns, and honey bees for pollinating and sale. Ross Knecht: Ross is the Executive Director at Country Lake Christian Retreat. Ross and his wife Leana have been married for 15 years and have three active children. Abigail (13), Anna (11), and Andrew (10) have loved being part of the Country Lake ministry since January of 2011. Prior to entering full time ministry at Country Lake, Ross had a successful career in sales and logistics at WW Grainger based out of Chicago, IL and resided in Jeffersonville, IN where he grew up. He has also served in various lay ministry roles and was a deacon at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY. His family relocated to Henryville, IN in July of 2012 to be closer to Country Lake and to allow his family more flexibility in serving in the ministry together. Workshop Leaders Allison Doty Allison is the First Impressions Manager at Country Lake Christian Retreat. She began her career at Country Lake as summer staff in 2006. She worked for 4 years as summer staff before moving to Arkansas after being married. When she moved back to Kentucky, she worked again as summer staff and was hired on full time in September 2011. She will celebrate her 5th wedding anniversary this March. She and Jon live in Henryville, IN. 19 Workshop Leaders Scott McClimans— After graduating from CCU, Scott spent 13 years in Facility Maintenance including 9 years working as a technician in commercial HVAC installation, service and preventive maintenance. Since 2006 he’s been the camp manager at Camp Pitt—Pittsylvania Christian Service Camp in Chatham, VA along with his wife, Jane and their three children. Chris Osborne - Chris spent his childhood attending Church of Christ Youth Camp in Grundy, VA. Books can link between words or any punctuation, such as full stops. Can you find the names of 24 books of the Bible in this paragraph? This is a most remarkable puzzle. Someone found it in the seat pocket on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping himself occupied for hours. One man from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his boat. Roy Clark studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Victs mentioned it in her column once. One woman judges the job to be so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help calm her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot...that's a fact. Some people will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. The truth is, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or scholar to see some of them at the worst. Something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have. Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation may help, books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. And punctuation or spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete. Remember, there are 24 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph.
