Bohn, a PBA Hall of Famer,
rebounded from a pocket 7-10
split in the first frame of the
championship match, throwing
nine strikes on his next 11
shots to tie hometown favorite
Ronnie Russell of nearby
Marion, 237-237, at the end of
10 frames. The 51-year-old lefthander then threw two strikes
in the one-ball sudden-death
roll-off, defeating Russell when
the Indiana native struck on
his first attempt, but left a 10
pin on his second shot.
“I was only 16 when I met
Mark Roth,” Bohn said, “and
I had no idea I’d be standing
here tied with him with 34
titles. He obviously got there
much faster than I did, but
when you think about Roth, he
single-handedly revolutionized
the sport. Anyone who hooks
the ball today does it because
of what Mark did in the late
1960s and ‘70s. I couldn’t be
happier to share this distinction with him.”
Roth, who was in Indianapolis for the anniversary
TOC weekend, said, “It was just
a matter of time before Parker
caught up with me. We went
about it in different ways, but it
couldn’t have been a nicer guy
to do it.”
Walter Ray Williams Jr. is
the all-time PBA Tour titles
leader with 47, followed by the
late Earl Anthony with 43, and
Norm Duke and Pete Weber
who are tied for third with 37
each. Among left-handed players, Bohn trails only Anthony
in career titles.

Tour schedule set
ARLINGTON, Texas – The
Professional Women’s Bowling
Association Tour will relaunch in 2015 featuring seven
regular-season events, three
nationally televised majors and
stops from coast to coast.
The PWBA Tour schedule will kick off with the
United States Bowling Congress
Queens from May 13-19 and
conclude with the PWBA Tour
Championship from Sept. 10-13.
“The dream now is a reality and professional women’s
bowling is back for a new
generation to experience,”
said Kelly Kulick, a six-time
major champion who serves
as PWBA spokeswoman. “The
tour schedule visits all types of
cities across the country with a
format that is fun for fans and
allows women to be pro bowlers without sacrificing their
career path or family time.”
PWBA regular-season
events have a Friday through
Sunday format to allow PWBA
members to bowl tour stops
and have flexibility for work or
family obligations during the

held the lead or stayed close
throughout Sunday morning
and in the finals. Entering the
title match, he was in 2nd…
trailing qualifying leader, Vic
Benedict by 40 pins. He would
have to win by 11 pins to go
around him. Vic started with
a big split, then managed a
double along with completing
the cycle (7, 8, 9, 10 in the
same game). Entering the 9th,
he could strike out to insure at
least a tie. Vic left the dreaded
lily, then doubled in the 10th,
but Greg had enough with a
214 to Vic’s 191.
It was the first title for Greg,
who traveled from Kansas
City, and earned $1,000 first
place prize money. Doug Hayes
bowled steady to get 3rd place.
First-time bowler Raif Terry
finished 4th and Randy Bennett
rounded out the top five.
Thanks to Chris Skillings
and crew for hosting. This is
a great center to visit, with
modern scoring, fixtures and
enormous arcade.
Tom Crawford (Tulsa) had
the only 300 in qualifying,
but Mark Scroggins, Robert
Dunaway and Benedict all shot
a perfecto in the finals.
We had 6 first time bowlers
at Shawnee. Terry Davis made
his first finals and Scott Stofko
received his first check.

Well its official, the USBC
announced the new PWBA
2015 tour this week, and
will be kicking off on May
13th with the USBC Queens
in Green Bay, WI. The tour
actually starts in earnest on
July 9th in Sacramento, CA and
will continue for 10 straight
weeks, which includes the Luci
Doubles in Houston.
The schedule is heavily
based in the Midwest with only
three events being outside that
area. I have seen and heard
some negative thoughts on that
schedule based on the cost of
travel, but let’s be completely
honest, cost is a factor for any
event whether you drive, fly or
walk.
There is NO WAY to please
all, but with that being said,
USBC has guaranteed 32 cash
spots for each event with a
minimum payout of $1,200.
That my friends, is the best
possible way to enable the players to make it a cost manageable investment.
I for one, am very excited about the return of ladies
professional bowling, and the
setup for the new tour is about
as good as any of us could
possibly hope for. I honestly
never thought I would see the
day there would be a ladies
tour again!
I did talk with PWBA
spokeswoman, Kelly Kulick to
get her thoughts on this week’s
big announcement.

did the PWBA feel the process
for submitting applications to
host the tournaments go, and
how many centers submitted a
request to host?
Kelly Kulick: The process
was terrific. We had significant
interest from BPAA member
centers supporting this project
and many great discussions
with proprietors about scheduling options.
TBN: What was the main
criteria that you considered
when deciding on which
centers would get selected?
KK: We wanted to touch as
many regions of the country
as possible, but also provide
a reasonable driving path for
the women who want to bowl
every week. Also, all of the

host centers are run by highly
engaged proprietors with
history of hosting first-class
events. We know the experience for the players and the
fans will be outstanding at
each of the stops.
TBN: The schedule appears to be focused on having
tournaments in the central part
of the US, was that a conscious
decision?
KK: We certainly were open
to visiting the coasts more, but
the date availability of host
centers didn’t work unless we
asked the players to go back
and forth across the country
several times.
TBN: There are only a
couple of events that are close
to metropolitan areas, is there
a concern that factor may make
it challenging for the players to
get there?
KK: Not at all. While some
of the stops are in smaller cities, they are nearly all within
an hour of a significant airport.
TBN: How many entries are
you planning for/expecting at
each event, what will make it a
success in your eyes?
KK: We believe there will be
at least 30-48 touring players
who will join and hope many
non-members will bowl each
stop too. A big unknown are
the college players and those
right out of college. Those
players are really talented and
this is a shot for them to earn
meaningful scholarship funds
in the summer.
TBN: What has the USBC
most excited to start up this
tour?
KK: USBC’s priority under
Chad Murphy is providing
services and programs focused
on a future for the sport. The
PWBA Tour embodies the
future for the sport in every
way. It is about more than
tournaments for top female
players. This is about bringing
families in all these tour stops
and a chance to connect with
a professional sporting event.
That is critical to the future.
TBN: Is the PWBA/USBC
planning any innovative or
grass roots methods to grow
the PWBA membership and
entries?
KK: Our staff will be
working closely with the host
centers and local associations
to build interest, but it’s important for everyone to understand
that the success of PWBA is not
based on entries and membership alone. We are looking at
how many people we reach.
How many families come to
Pro-Am events, how many
people watch on BowlTV, how
many people engage on social
media. It is fine to have only a
few dozen players, when they
are impacting the future for the
sport for tens of thousands.
Some interesting answers
from Kelly, and a focus area
that most of us aren’t thinking
about…its not all about the
bowling and entries, it’s about
the impact that the tour can
make.
I’m looking forward to
seeing how this all turns out
in year one and beyond. I do
know that however it goes, the
USBC and PWBA will make
adjustments based on the need.
The most important thing is
for all of us to support the tour,
whether we are bowling or not.
To those that say “I can’t
bowl them all,” I totally get
that, and it sounds like the
PWBA is saying to bowl the
ones you can. They will take
anything they can get, and for
a start-up, it feels like the right
plan.
So bring on July 9th and the
first tour stop in Sac-town!

Bohn, who qualified No. 1
for the Players Championship
finals two weeks earlier in
Milwaukee, said he had an
issue with his grip in the first
few frames, but “once I figured
out how to keep my hand dry, I
was in good shape.”
Bohn also accomplished
another personal goal with his
win.
“I’ve been coming to Woodland Bowl for 34 years, and
I don’t have a championship
banner hanging up here,” Bohn
said of the bowling center’s
tradition of recognizing its past
champions. “I’ve been assured
that after tonight, my banner
will be hanging up here.”
As rewarding as the victory
was for Bohn, it was equally
disappointing for Russell, who
was trying for his third PBA
Tour title. Leaving a 10 pin
standing on his second shot
in the 10th frame denied him
an outright win against Bohn,
and his seventh 10 pin in two
games ended his dream of
winning in front of his family
and hometown fans.
“This is the second time
I’ve finished second at
Woodland,” Russell said. “It’s
heartbreaking.”
Tom Daugherty of Tampa,
Fla., started the championship
round with a 225-212 victory
over PBA Hall of Famer Norm
Duke of Clermont, Fla., and
he then eliminated red-hot
Australian two-handed star
Jason Belmonte, 245-227 in
the second match. In winning
that match, Daugherty denied
Belmonte a shot at a PBA
record-tying third consecutive
title (he had previously won
the USBC Masters and 50th
anniversary Barbasol PBA
Tournament of Champions),
and he ended Belmonte’s streak
of 13 consecutive match wins
on television, three shy of the
PBA record set by Jim Pencak
between 1989 and 1991.
Russell ended Daugherty’s
bid for a second PBA Tour title,
216-214, with a clutch strike on
his first shot in the 10th frame
of the semifinal match.
The PBA Tour on ESPN
continues next Sunday when
the finals of the Mark Roth/
Marshall Holman PBA Doubles
Championship airs at 1 p.m.
ET. The Baker-format doubles
finals – in which teammates
will bowl alternate frames –

The PWBA Tour is made
possible thanks to a three-year

USBC and Bowling Proprietors’
Association of America.
The PWBA regular season
will be live streamed online
via USBC’s YouTube channel, BowlTV, while the USBC
Queens finals will be televised
live on ESPN2.
The Bowlmor AMF U.S.
Women’s Open and PWBA Tour
Championship finals will be
televised on a national cable
sports network. Details of the
television partnership will be
announced soon.
“Hosting a PWBA event will
be fantastic for centers involved
and we are thrilled to see such
strong support from outstanding BPAA member centers,”
BPAA Executive Director Frank
DeSocio said. “We thank
Bowlmor AMF and all of our
partners stepping up their
support of bowling.”
The format for regularseason PWBA Tour events will
have all competitors bowl 12
qualifying games. The top 12
players will advance to roundrobin match play the following
day for an additional 12 games.
The top five will then advance
to the stepladder finals. The
top 32 players at each regularseason event are guaranteed a
prize check with $1,200 for the
last spot to cash.
Players will only be allowed to use PWBA registered
equipment during PWBA Tour
regular-season events, the
PWBA Tour Championship and
all PWBA Tour cable television
finals. Registered ball brands
include 900 Global, Brunswick, Columbia 300, Ebonite,
Hammer, Motiv, Roto Grip,
Storm and Track. Registered
accessory brands include Turbo
Bowling Accessories and Vise
Grips.
Kegel will support the
PWBA Tour as the official lane
maintenance provider. The
team from Kegel will be on-site
at each tour stop to provide
consistent lane conditions.
“The PWBA Tour project

teams can begin charting
their course toward the 2015
national title as sectionalqualifying assignments were
handed out Wednesday for the
2015 XBowling Intercollegiate
Team Championships.
The four sectional qualifiers
will be held March 14-15 at
30 Strikes in Stratford, New
Jersey; Cityview Lanes in Fort
Worth, Texas; Stardust Bowl of
Addison in Addison, Illinois;
and Smyrna Bowl in Smyrna,
Tennessee.
The top four teams in each
division at each sectional will
advance to the 2015 XBowling
Intercollegiate Team Championships, which will be held April
15-18 at Northrock Lanes in
Wichita, Kansas.

of history with a chance at a
third consecutive 300 game
and a 900 series.
The 38-year-old righthander coolly delivered his
36th consecutive strike during
the Thursday Night Patriots
Doubles league at Westgate
Lanes in Brockton, Massachusetts, making him the 26th
bowler in history, and first
in the Bay State, to record a
perfect series. The achievement
is pending approval from the
United States Bowling Congress
and would be the 27th USBCapproved 900.
“I’ve gotten close before, but
I’ve never gotten that elusive
300,” said Emmanuel, whose
previous high game in USBCcertified competition was 290
on two occasions. “The first
one last night was one of those
moments I’ll never forget. After
that, I just told myself to stay
in the game and stay focused.”
What happened next
stopped everything at the
62-lane (50 tenpin and 12
candlepin) center, and all of
the 32-team doubles league
rallied behind Emmanuel to
watch him claim his spot in
the Massachusetts and USBC
record books.
Not only had perfection
eluded Emmanuel, who has
been bowling competitively
since he was 15, but he also
hadn’t eclipsed the 800 mark in
a three-game series.
“Toward the end of the
second 300, in the back of my
mind, I was wondering if it was
real and if I could do it again,”
said Emmanuel, who entered
the night with a 217 average
for 25 weeks in the league.
“People stopped bowling as I
entered the 10th frame of the
last game, and I just reminded
myself that I’d made it that far,
so throw another good shot and
see what happens.”
Emmanuel has improved
nearly 20 pins in average since
last season and attributes
that to the help and pro shop
guidance of amateur standout
Alex Aguiar and the staff at
Strike F/X Pro Shops as well as
countless hours watching the
sport’s top bowlers on various
live-streaming outlets.
“I’ve always stayed in the
game and always wanted to
excel,” Emmanuel said. “This
is a feeling that’s incredible
and something I may never
feel again. It was so surreal,
and I had to pinch myself to
believe it was true. I’m still
speechless.”




As I began to mention last
week, and chances are you’ve
noticed, the PBA has had a
couple of big weeks on ESPN.
First, the USBC Masters finals
had a huge boost in ratings
over last years show, with
numerous story lines and an
ideal Sunday for a live-finals.
Any idea why? It is the first
slower sports-wise Sunday
since August because it was
the first Sunday following the
Super Bowl. There were no NFL
games or any six-hour pregame
show. No other big sporting
event on nationally at noon
Central Time. Casual sports
fans, creatures of habit they are
wanted something to watch, so
guess what they found.
Could this have helped? Absolutely. But the best news yet
is viewers are smart enough
to seek out the PBA on ESPN
again down the road.
The Tournament of Champions TV finals the following
Sunday certainly helped.
Casual viewers may not have
known Jason Belmonte was on
route to winning a majority of
the last ten majors held and
going for back-to-back majors
for the second straight week,
but they saw something else
most casual viewers will never
witness or achieve, other than
on a Wii game, and that was
Sean Rash’s historic 300 game.
And since Pete McCordic’s
1987 gem, those have a way
of making it to SportsCenter,
which runs over and over and
over that night well into the
next morning. Just like Genie
will tell you about real estate,
the phrase, ‘Location, location, location’ fits all too well
here.

In the first of a two-part
interview, PBA Commissioner
Tom Clark offers more details
of the PBA’s television ratings
through the Tournament of
Champions TV finals. This
week, Clark breaks down the
TV rating numbers during
Masters week. USBC Executive
Chad Murphy also offers his
observations on a successful
Masters week. First, here’s Tom
Clark.
JPA: The USBC originally
scheduled the 2015 Masters
this summer before moving it
to February. What has Murphy
told you about the successful
TV finals and ratings increase?
TC: When Chad Murphy
became USBC Executive
Director, the first conversation
I had with him was to ask to
move the Masters back into
the PBA schedule on ESPN
so the maximum number of
sports fans could be reached
with the show. To his great
credit, he moved things around
with Green Bay and got it
done. Since the USBC Masters
has become a part of the PBA
schedule in recent years, its
popularity, notoriety, and
prestige has skyrocketed. We
thank Chad and the USBC for
keeping that momentum going
and all of bowling benefited
this year.
JPA: On Masters weekend,
there was not much else on
television at noon central
time on Sunday the weekend
after the Super Bowl. Among
other factors like the fantastic
story lines, how much did that
have play into higher ratings
numbers?
TC: Of course competition
is always a factor, but it is
strong no matter what day.
There are million channels and
entertainment options at all
hours of every day. In the case
of the Masters, what was very
encouraging was we followed
SportsCenter, and grew the
number coming out of that
popular show. When the PBA
follows NFL Countdown on
NFL Sundays, there is a natural
drop off in viewership because
the NFL Countdown is very
popular and much of that audience turns to football games
eventually, making it almost
impossible for any sport to hold
the NFL Countdown number.
But with no football against us
on Masters Sunday, we showed
that PBA bowling can grab a
solid SportsCenter audience
and actually grow that number
throughout a two-hour telecast.
Even when against the NFL
playoffs, our WSOB Scorpion
show averaged over 900,000
viewers. ESPN has always
valued the PBA’s ability to
attract an audience in the face
of the greatest competition in
televised sports (NFL), but this
year in particular they were
very impressed.
Also with the Masters show,
everyone should know that
Pete Weber is still the PBA
player that moves the needle
most in ratings. He is simply
compelling to general audiences beyond any other players, so
on top of everything that was
great about the Masters show,
there was Pete.
JPA: Since PDW moves that
ratings needle, what has been
the response of Pete’s ‘This
is SportsCenter’ appearance,
especially outside the bowling
world? A little ironic debuting on a TV finals of a major
tournament a Weber had yet to
win.
TC: I see about 35,000 views
on the YouTube version of
Pete’s SportsCenter ad. I think
everyone loves those iconic
spots and to have a bowler in
one is a great move by ESPN. I
saw it air during a college basketball game last night, so it’s
airing across ESPN platforms at
all times of day, not just during
a bowling show.
As promised, Chad Murphy
took time out of his busy week
to offer his observations.
JPA: Why was the decision
made to move the Masters from
July to February?
CM: Having the USBC Masters as a part of the traditional
pro tour schedule provides
better value for the PBA, the
bowlers and product manufacturers. The decision was made
considering the best interest of
the future for the sport.
JPA: How much of a surprise was the increase in the
Sunday TV ratings from last
year’s show?
CM: The PBA has been doing a terrific job with telecasts
all season and ratings have
been up across the board. The
ratings for the Masters were
a validation of a successful
partnership between USBC and
PBA.
JPA: Are there any plans to
discuss with Tom Clark putting
the 2016 Masters on the same
week to maximize TV ratings
and the overall success of the
tournament?
CM: The USBC will collaborate with PBA on finding
the best date for the partnership. TV scheduling will be a
consideration.
JPA: The PBA XtraFrame
crew commented numerous
times complimenting the host
center and the bowling community of Green Bay. How
helpful was the bowling community of Green Bay and the
staff of Ashwaubenon Bowling
Lanes in making the tournament the success it was?
CM: Our partners in Green
Bay were amazing and a huge
part of the success. From the
city leadership to the fans, and
hosts at Ashwaubenon, we
couldn’t have asked for anything better. We are looking
forward to returning for the
USBC Queens in May.

The PBA may have also gotten a push from viewers in the
snowed-in Northeast U.S. with
the Masters and ToC, but it is
not the first time this has happened. Remember the name
Joe Hutchinson? A very savvy
pro from the late 70s and early
80s became most known what
happened en route to winning
the 1980 PBA AMF MagicScore
Open in Peoria. While wearing a piece of new technology
known as a body mic, viewers
were entertained by Hutch’s
comments letting thousands
of home bound viewers in the
Great Lakes and Midwest know
what he thought of many of his
shots while pleasantly gesturing to the crowd, much to the
delight of substitute announcers Dave Diles and Dick Weber.

By tapping into the automatic scoring systems at PBA
Tour events, Rolltech is able to
provide precise frame-by-frame
live scoring and statistical
analysis, which is being used
on pba.com, the PBA’s official
website; Xtra Frame, the PBA’s
online video streaming service;
ESPN telecasts, and through
the other media outlets that
compose the PBA Network.
Additionally, superstars like
Jason Belmonte, Mike Fagan
and Bill O’Neill have recorded
their games using Rolltech and
shared them, in real-time, with
fans; including a recent 300
game by Belmonte.
“Rolltech is an amazing
platform that allows me to
engage with my performance
and fans like never before. This
is the future of the sport,” said
Belmonte.
“The PBA has worked
closely with Rolltech to develop
an entirely new level of insight
into the sport by tracking
statistics that we’ve never
seen before,” PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said. “With

our sport.”
Rolltech offers both
automatic and manual score
tracking, making its product
available to bowlers around the
world. Rolltech is currently in
use in more than 2,500 bowling centers in 36 countries.
Rolltech offers a “pro” plan that
includes additional services to
bowlers using Rolltech’s mobile
application, which is available
on iTunes or Google Play.

After some practice and a few
tips from Williams, Brauckman beat the PBA’s all-time
titles leader (47) in a one-game
match, 213-206.
“He’s the best ever in my
opinion,” said Brauckman, who
carries a 176 average. “I’ve
always admired his game and
how he throws the ball. Just
to be able to bowl with him
was great, but to beat him was
something I didn’t expect.”
Prior to the match, Brauckman had a brand new Brunswick ball drilled with some
help from Williams and then it
was off to the lanes to try it out.
“When he said he was a 176
average, I didn’t believe it,” Wil-
liams said. “He’s got everything
you want at his age – great
fundamentals, ball control, timing. Like all of us, he probably
needs to make sure not to forget
to work on the spares, but I was
pretty surprised at how well he
threw the ball.”
The spare advice was welltaken as Matt missed a 10 pin
in the 10th frame, even though
he still won the match.
Brauckman bowls in a youth
league and is an avid tournament bowler in Iowa. Last
year he finished ninth in his
division in the Iowa State Youth
BA singles. Brauckman was
accompanied to Indianapolis
by his mother Karen, father
Douglas and teammate Tyler
Mohr.
