Volume 19 Number 8 August 2008 MUSTANG MANIA Official Newsletter of the Emerald Coast Regional Mustang Club Mustang Steve Bash Mustang Steve Birthday Bash – ECRMC hosted Mustang owners from across the country as we gathered to celebrate the birthday of Steve Wilkes, founder of the Mustang Steve website. Despite being a Florida July, good times were had by all in attendance. Ray Grater showed his skill at changing out spark plugs in the spark plug competition, Mustang Steve provided free t-shirts to all joining in the festivities, and what could have been more appropriate to have another Steve cooking. Steve Coley from Longhorns Steakhouse brought burgers and hot dogs for lunch. As if bringing the food wasn’t enough, he also braved the heat to cook for us all afternoon. I want to THANK YOU ALL for your patience on the running of my first meeting as your president. We welcomed a few new members to our club, with some sweet stangs. We had a good turn out for our cruise to BK lounge in Pensacola on the 9th of Aug; I think we ended up with about 12 stangs. Thanks to your new leader for doing a “dee da dee” and making a wrong turn not once! But yes 2 times…. thank you thank you! Yet you didn’t give me to much grief, thank you all it was a great night. Looking forward to our next show at FWB high school Sep 6th. Kara Kerwood ECRMC President Member #265 Page 3 of 14 Volume 19 Number 8 August 2008 ECRMC News Updates Birthday Bash (continued) – After a full day of eating Longhorns burgers and hot dogs, there was a show n shine behind the Longhorns restaurant in Fort Walton. There just isn’t a better way to nourish the body than with Longhorns all day long! While on the subject of food, Corky Pittsenberger hosted a Crawfish and shrimp boil reception for those attending the bash from out of town on Thursday and everyone cruised in to the Shalimar Sonic Friday night in preparation for the bash itself. Nothing like a weekend jammed full of food and Mustangs! Despite suffering from full bellies, Bash attendees battled in a spark plug changing contest in pursuit of the tool set offered to the first place winner. Page 4 of 14 Volume 19 Number 8 August 2008 Thanks to Corky and Karol Pittsenberger for coordinating the ECRMC / Mustang Steve hook ups, The Air Armament Museum for letting us park Mustangs around the aircraft on display, Mustang Steve for organizing the spark plug contest and the free shirts, and especially to Longhorns Steve for bringing and cooking all that delicious food. (And then having to see us again that evening at the Show n Shine). The efforts of all involved are greatly appreciated by all who attended. August Cruise – On Saturday, August 9th ECRMC members joined forces to cruise over to Pensacola for the weekly Saturday night show n shine at the 9 Mile Rd. Burger King. This proved to be a sizable event as the show cars spilled over into the Winn Dixie section of the parking lot. Just about every flavor of auto enthusiast was represented at the 9 Mile show. Even the wild cam, very free flowing exhaust Chevy Tahoe set had a place at this show. Bylaws Updates – All club members will be receiving a copy of the current club bylaws. Look them over and bring any and all comments, criticisms, and recommended improvements to the September meeting. We will be holding a preliminary discussion on changes to the bylaws before we begin making any updates. Show Season is upon us – As we locals know, Fall brings the full show season to Northwest Florida. The Emerald Coast Show is September 6th at Fort Walton High School. Look for the enclosed flyer. October hits the hardest with three shows on the same day – Navarre Beach (Navarre High), Fun in the Son in Robertsdale, Al., and Bay Mustang’s Panama City Beach Super Walmart show are all scheduled for October 18th. SanDestin Show n Shine – We had a special guest from the Market Shops in SanDestin at our August meeting. Special Events coordinator Ria Pruitt joined our meeting and invited us to hold a Show Shine at the Market Shops. Those in attendance agreed to schedule the show for November 15th. Mark your calendars and watch for more details in future Manias! ECRMC Annual Show – Don’t put those calendars away just yet! A tentative date for our next club show (and ECRMC’s 20th Anniversary Celebration) has been set for April 25, 2009 at Fort Walton High School. Ask club officials about how you get involved and help out with the show. Any and all ideas and suggestions are welcome. Deputy Anthony Forgione – ECRMC members at the August meeting agreed to make a donation of $200.00 from the club to the benefit account for the family of Okaloosa’s first fallen officer. Page 5 of 14 Volume 19 Number 8 August 2008 Remember to support our club’s sponsors. Stop by and thank them for their help in making ECRMC the greatest regional mustang club. Volume 19 Number 8 August 2008 Car of the Month David Claflin’s 1990 LX 5.0 This is my 90X daily driver; I saw it advertised on the Corral in the fall of 2004 for $4200. I exchanged a couple emails with the guy, got his phone number and called him up. We talked for a bit and then set up a date to go look at it. Eric Johnson went with me to drive the wife’s car back in case I did buy it. After looking at it and driving it I decided to buy it, I think I offered him $3600 and he took it. He had been preparing the car for drag racing so he had a reverse shift manual valve body C4 in it, weld draglites, 4:10 geared auburn rear end, an extra engine and a whole bunch of other stuff. That other stuff filled up the back of the wife’s expedition and the Mustang. Once we got it back I started taking it apart to clean it, see how well things were really put together and get rid of stuff I didn’t need. The rear end I swapped with Eric for some wheels, the race built C-4 came out for sale, and a T5 went back in. All of the rest of stuff I took off that wasn’t needed for a daily driver I sold or traded and then sold. In the end I came out about even for what I paid for the car, that doesn’t happen very often. Since I’ve been driving the car I did put a new engine in it last spring, and sold the shortblock. It is a 306, with 5.4” rods, ported Edelbrock performer heads, with 2.02 Ferrera intake valves, ported Holley SystemMaxII intake, Jay Allen custom cam, 1-¾ long tube headers and an EEC Tuner. With the tuner I can manipulate the tune to make good power and mileage. On the highway I can get 28MPG if I can keep it at 55MPH,which is the hardest part to keep it at 55. On the dyno it made 358 RWHP and 346 RWTQ, not bad for a little 306 that is a daily driver. At the track it runs in the mid 8’s and mid 80’s on street tires. I recently picked up a set of drag radials and some skinny tires on weld pro stars, once the weather cools off some I’d like to go up to the track to see if I can get into the 7’s. Hopefully some others from the club can come along to see what their cars can do.
