7321 CoFCG_v5_English.indd - Fresno County Rural Transit Agency
HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
The Fresno County Transportation Guide is composed of several sections,
designed to provide answers to the following questions:
✓ Which transit line or route will I need to use? What time does it arrive? How
much will it cost?
✓ What about carpooling or vanpooling? How do I find someone to ride with?
✓ What airlines travel in and out of Fresno?
✓ Who can I call to get more information?
The sections in this guide include lists of telephone numbers for all of the
transportation providers in Fresno County.
A list of the service days, hours and fares for all of the local transit
agencies.
Schedules for the following transportation providers:
• Fresno Area Express
• Clovis Stageline
• Amtrak
• Greyhound
• Orange Belt Stages
• Fresno County Rural Transit Agency and all of the rural providers
Ridesharing information. Looking for carpool or vanpool partners?
Welcome to the San Joaquin Valley’s online rideshare matching system.
Valleyrides.com will provide you with a free, personalized matchlist
of commuters, instantly! It’s a simple way to find others who are
interested in carpooling or vanpooling based on home and work/school
locations and schedules. This is a secure and confidential service.
You control the information you want to provide. Also included in
the Ridesharing section is a driving costs calculation sheet. You’ll be
surprised to see how much you are really spending!
A Destination Guide that lists a variety of retail centers, educational
institutions, and recreational facilities and the transit routes that serve
them.
Tear-out trip planners. Pages 68-69 contain a series of trip planning
sheets. Each of the major transportation providers maintains a
telephone information center with trained operators capable of
answering your questions. Simply fill out one of the forms and call the
transportation provider you need.
Map Sections. Towards the center of this guide you will find a set of
maps illustrating Fresno and Clovis local transit routes and insets
showing the main transportation terminals, a bikeway map of the
Fresno-Clovis area, and maps illustrating intercity and intracounty
routes. These maps will help you locate your destination and route.

the Clovis Urban Area and the Fresno rural area. To date, 29 agencies and
programs are participating to ensure that the special transportation needs of
their clients are being met. Additional agencies are welcome to participate.

Transportation Services
Several private sector companies are in the business of providing non-emergency medical transportation services in the metropolitan and rural areas of
Fresno County. Public transit providers do not compete or duplicate their
specific services. These trips are generally prescribed by a doctor for a medical purpose.Vehicles driven by specially trained personnel transport patients
in seats, wheelchairs or gurneys. Interested parties may contact the following

route is best. Remember that you can transfer from one route to another
to reach your destination.
14
FRESNO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION GUIDE
Find out what time the bus will arrive at your stop - Use a copy of
the FAX Schedule Guide to find out what time the bus serves the route
you are planning to use.
Catching the bus - Please remember that buses will only stop at
designated stops. Designated stops have FAX bus stop signs that show
which route is served at the stop. If you are seated at a shelter, or on a bus
bench, please stand up to let the driver know that you wish to board. If
you are standing at a bus stop, wave to the driver as the bus approaches.
Wheelchair Accessibility - All FAX buses have wheelchair lifts for
easy access by passengers who either use wheelchairs, or have difficulty
climbing stairs.
Paying your fare - Cash, tokens, passes and transfers can be used on all
buses. If you use cash, have the exact fare because drivers do not carry
change. Please have your fare ready when the bus arrives. The farebox does
accept dollar bills.
Leaving the bus - Be alert for your destination. To signal the operator
to stop, pull the cord above the windows. Wait until the bus comes to a
complete stop before leaving your seat. Please remember that buses will
stop only at designated bus stops. Leave through the rear doors if possible
to allow new passengers to board. Pull the cord a minimum of one block
prior to your desired bus stop.
Transfers - Transfers are free and allow you to use different buses in
order to complete your one-way trip. Bus transfers can be made only
where routes intersect, and are not valid for layovers or return trips.
Transfers are valid for one hour past the time cut on the transfer.
For more information about FAX’s services call (559) 621-RIDE or
go to FAX’s website at www.fresno.gov/fax/.html.

Rural Transit
Services
Fresno County Rural
Transit Agency (FCRTA)
Service information: Visit our website at www.ruraltransit.org.
FCRTA services are generally available Monday through Friday
from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Currently, the FCRTA has 19 transit
subsystems. Specific service information may be obtained by
contacting the transit subsystems listed on the following pages.
Service area: The FCRTA’s transit services continue to be available to
the elderly (60+), disabled, low income, and general public patrons
within each of the thirteen rural incorporated cities of Fresno
County–Coalinga, Firebaugh, Fowler, Huron, Kerman, Kingsburg,
Mendota, Orange Cove, Parlier, Reedley, Sanger, San Joaquin, and Selma.
Many unincorporated rural communities are also being served,
including the following: Alder Springs, Auberry, Biola, Burrough Valley,
Cantua Creek, Caruthers, Centerville, Dunlap, Easton, El Porvenir,
Five Points, Friant, Halfway, Jose Basin, Lanare, Laton, Marshall
Station, Meadow Lakes, Mile High, Minkler, Miramonte, New Auberry,
O’Neill's, Pinehurst, Prather, Raisin City, Riverdale, Squaw Valley,

frequent trips. Fares for service within a community range from
$.50 (for elderly, disabled, and accompanied children) to $.75 (for
the general public) per one-way trip. Fares for intercity service are
generally half the fares granted to common carriers by the California
Public Utilities Commission, they range from $.75 to $6.50 per oneway trip, depending on distance traveled. Fares may be subject to
adjustment. See page 10 for a listing of transit fares, or contact each
transit provider individually.

FRESNO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION GUIDE

the local city’s holiday schedule which may include: America’s
Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day,Veteran’s Day,
Thanksgiving Days (Thursday and Friday), Christmas Eve afternoon,
Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve afternoon, New Year’s Day, Martin

responsive and/or scheduled, fixed-route basis.
Using demand responsive services: With demand responsive
services a patron calls a local telephone number, identifies where
they are located, where they want to go within the rural transit
service area, and when they need to go within the regular service
hours. The driver is dispatched to pick-up and transport the patron.
Using scheduled, fixed-route services: With scheduled, fixedroute services, a patron may also call a local phone number to
determine the nearest designated bus stop to their location, and the
scheduled time to board the transit vehicle for a trip to the desired
location along the route.
Service between rural cities and the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan
Area are provided on a scheduled, fixed-route basis.
Our individual transit services depend on sufficient ridership to
ensure continuation. All operations are subject to modifications, as
warranted. Contact each transit provider by phone to determine
possible changes.
Appointment scheduling: When making an appointment in the
Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area, please understand the limited
time period that the intercity service will be in town. Therefore, you

Valleyrides
Who we are: Since 1984 the Council of Fresno County Governments has
run a Ridesharing program for the Central Valley, now called Valleyrides.
Their mission is to find ways of easing traffic congestion and emissions
related air pollution in the San Joaquin Valley. All of the services and
information is provided free of charge to commuters, employers and
other organizations.
Valleyride.com's ridematching database currently covers Fresno, Kings,
Madera and Tulare Counties. It is considered a Transportation Demand
Management (TDM) Agency, whose goal is to reduce as many single
occupant vehicles from the road as possible, by encouraging commuters
to use another form of transportation such as bicycling, carpooling,
vanpooling, walking or public transit. Or to avoid commuting at all by
telecommuting and teleconferencing.
How to get a carpool or vanpool rolling: First, go online to www.
valleyrides.com for a free, computerized matchlist.Your list will have the
names and phone numbers of people who live by you, work by you, and
have a similar schedule.
Next, call the people you think are the most likely candidates for a
carpooling or vanpooling group. Consider meeting the people on your
list over coffee or a lunch break to work out the details. You are provided
with an extensive list of questions to ask such as: Who drives when?
Pick-up and drop-off points? How long do we wait if someone is late?
How much should each person pay? Each carpool is as individual as its
carpoolers. You decide how you want your group to operate. If you get
matched into an existing vanpool the group will already have rules and
prices established.
Get paid to vanpool!! Vanpools are excellent commuting options for
people who travel 10 miles or more one way to work or school. There
are government subsidies of $65 to $100 per month available to state and
federal employees who ride in a vanpool of 7 or more passengers. Visit
www.valleyrides.com for a list of vanpool leasing companies to see if you
qualify for the subsidy, and for subsidies & reimbursements available to
Fresno area van poolers.
Carpooling without a car? It's done all the time. If you don't have a car,
just find a driver or carpool group that will let you chip in your share of
gas and maintenance costs in exchange for a ride. Many people have vehicles but need someone to split expenses with them. Go to www.valleyrides.com to print out a list of other people who may be able to carpool

with you. While you are online, check out the "Rewards" section of the site
to see what you could get for starting a carpool.
What about emergencies? At one time or another, almost everyone has
to leave work early due to an unexpected emergency.Your company may
have or want to develop a Guaranteed Ride Home program to deal with
this situation. Some employers have vehicles available or offer a rental car
or a taxi. You might be able to catch a ride with another employee leaving
at a similar time. You should always be aware of your options in case of a
family emergency or unexpected overtime. Some vanpool programs provide GRH at no cost to you.
Benefits of Ridesharing: Clean air is one of the biggest benefits derived
from trip reduction or TDM strategies. However, there are several other
benefits that commuters and employers can enjoy.
Commuter benefits
✦ Improved health from increased exercise and/or reduced stress
levels
✦ Reduced commute and vehicle repair costs (see page 53)
✦ Reduced traffic congestion
✦ Tax incentives or commuter subsidies
Employer benefits
✦ Improved employee health which results in fewer absences
✦ Lower health care costs
✦ Improved employee morale
✦ Higher productivity
✦ Tax incentives
✦ Fewer air quality regulations
✦ Increased parking space for customers
✦ Improved public image
✦ Better employee incentive package

**Depreciation - To calculate depreciation--the difference between what you pay for
your vehicle and what you sell it for--subtract the projected trade-in value from its
purchase price. Divide the difference by the number of years you
plan to keep the vehicle.
***Insurance - Total the annual premiums of property damage and liability, comprehensive and collision policies that directly relate to your vehicle’s operation.
****Finance Charges - Note interest charges if you borrowed money to buy the
vehicle.
Park-and-Ride Lots
Caltrans provides park-and-ride facilities within Fresno County. Each site
offers secure parking in a lighted environment:
• Prather State Route 168 near Lodge Road.
• Coalinga near intersection of State Route 198 and State Route 33.
• Auberry near the intersection of State Route 168 and Auberry
Road.
Highway Safety Programs
The California Highway Information Network (CHIN) offers a toll-free
phone number (1-800-427-ROAD) that, when used with a touch tone phone,
will provide the caller with road conditions on any State Highway within
California.
The Central Valley can get foggy – when it does, Amtrak’s San Joaquin trains
and local transit services are the best way to get around. However, if you must
drive, Operation Fog, a joint-effort of the California Highway Patrol (CHP)
and Caltrans, is designed to reduce the number of multi-vehicle accidents in
known dense fog areas. This program encompasses the PACE operation of
the CHP, along with the utilization of Caltrans’ Changeable Message Signs,
Highway Advisory Radios and Weather Stations.
The Freeway Service Patrol provides assistance to disabled vehicles on
Highways 41, 99 and 180 within the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area.

Bike Rack User Guide
Most buses around the Valley have bike racks installed on the front bumper of the bus. Each rack is able to securely hold two bicycles at a time.
They are user friendly, with a light-weight design allowing for quick and
easy loading and unloading. No additional fare or permit is required to
use them.
Loading Your Bike
1. Prior to catching the bus, remove any bike accessories such as tire
pumps or water bottles that could become loose while the bus is in
motion.
2. When the bus arrives, let the driver know you will be loading your
bike onto the rack.
3. Always load from curbside or while directly in front of the bus.
Never load on the driver’s side near the flow of traffic.
4. Use one hand to hold your bike and the other to unfold the rack.
(See figure 1 below)
5. While gripping the rack handle, slightly push in on the rack to
unlock and release it from its folded position. Then, lower the rack
down.
6. Lift your bike into the rack placing both tires into the wheel slots
Always load your bike into the rack closest to the bus. (See figure 2
below)
7. Pull the support arm up and adjust it securely over the front tire.
Now you are ready to board the
bus!
Figure 1
72
Figure 2
FRESNO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION GUIDE
Unloading Your Bike
1. As you approach your destination, request a stop by pulling the
gray bell cord or press the rubber strip. Tell the driver you will be
unloading your bike from the rack. When the bus comes to a complete stop, exit the front door of the bus.
2. Unload your bike from curbside or while directly in front of the
bus. Never unload your bike from the driver’s side.
3. Raise the support arm off the tire and lay it down into its locked
position. (See figures 3 and 4 below) Then, lift your bike out of the
rack.
4. If there are no other bikes in the rack, lift and push the bicycle rack
up to the folded and locked position.
5. Step back onto the curb with your bike and you are ready to roll.
