The tournament is the single biggest fundraiser of Wintzell’s Oyster House, having raised over $300,000 in scholarship funds for the college-bound finalists of the Distinguished Young Women program. Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Alabama, the program seeks to positively impact the lives of young women across the country by providing a transformative experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent. In addition to cash scholarships, participants from all 50 states will be eligible for college-granted scholarships from colleges and universities nationwide. Former University of Alabama football player John Croyle and his wife, Tee, have seen their dream of building the best children’s home in America grow into three separate facilities in northeast Alabama. John founded the Ranch in 1974 and since then, has met the needs of nearly 2,000 suffering children by giving them a solid, Christian home and a chance to fulfill God’s plan for their lives. The Ranch continues its impactful ministry under the leadership of the Croyles’ son, Brodie, and daughter, Reagan. Founded as a six-stool oyster bar in 1938 by J. Oliver Wintzell, Wintzell’s Oyster House celebrates its seventy-seventh year and is joined by ten additional Wintzell’s locations, reaching from the Gulf Coast to central and northern Alabama. While oysters— fried, stewed and nude—headline the iconic brand, Wintzell’s menu comprises signature seafood dishes, regional favorites and specialties native to Mobile. The walls of all Wintzell’s restaurants are covered with the founder’s homespun sayings, delivering an atmosphere that’s lively, casual and unmistakably southern.
