Promotion ends 31 October 2014 Hello nEbOians! It’s the holiday season! As we embark on the last months of the year, orange brings you exciting gossips, flashbacks and little tips on how to end the year with a bang! This issue, we met up with one of the most prolific male singers in Singapore’s music scene, Derrick Hoh. Read on to find out what he will be up to during this festive season, and his upcoming plans. Better yet? Start flipping because Derrick reveals to us 3 fun facts about himself which just might take everyone by surprise! 2014 has seen the birth of many trends. With selfies being one of the most used words nowadays, we naturally just had to do a quick recap of the best selfies of the year! We also have a fair share of awesome movies, and movie watchers have been spoiled with blockbusters after blockbusters this year that have left them gasping for air. Were you too busy to catch these flicks during the year? Deepanraj A C Ganesan It’s also the time of the year to get scrambling about to find your loved ones the perfect gift this Christmas. Santa Claus may be generous but the same cannot be said about the pricing of gifts, so orange is coming to the rescue! Once again, when your loved one gives you the big smile, you know who to thank! We always love to hear more from you, so share with us any ideas or feedback at advisors@nebo.com.sg! Merry Christmas and a happy new year! With very exciting movies all year round, and the very epic selfies that never seem to end, we recap our favourite moments of the year! We selected the top selfies (or wefies - A photo taken in the same fashion as a selfie, but with 2 or more people making it a “WE-fie) that we like the most! Our favourite selfie of the year! NTUC Secretary-General Mr Lim Swee Say, pulled all 12 EXCEL winners of the Spirit of Youth Awards 2014 for a selfie right on the stage! That was indeed an award winning moment to remember for all of us! Photo Credit: NTUC Care & Share Department Ellen DeGeneres basically kicked started the selfie trend when she got a few celebrities to come together to take the famous selfie at 2014 Oscars. Samsung marketer Maurice Levy even says it is worth up to US$1billion because of its massive sharing on social media! How Will You Be Spending Your Time During The Holiday Season? W Name: Arwa Ezzuddin Age: 21 School: Republic Polytechnic I plan to go to India to visit my relatives whom I haven’t seen in over 5 years. Also, I will be playing the role of a babysitter to my niece who would be arriving from the States during the holidays. W Dibashini Yen Age: 20 School: Millenia Institue I will be going for a cruise with family and then probably do some part time job in my free time. W Kane Raynard Goh Age: 20 School: Republic Polytechnic I would like to visit places that I have never visited before like Hong Kong or Australia. I love to travel because it allows me to see different parts of the world and get exposed to different experiences. 2014 seems to be a year of action movies! With the constant stream of movies that made us go “WE WANT TO WATCH THAT!” We shortlisted our top 2 favourites! X-Men: Days of Future Past Our favourite actors and actresses all gathered onto the big screen at the same time – Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Fan Bing Bing. The cast were just one of many reasons why the movie was the best of the year, but for us, Days of Future Past was certainly the best in the series of X-Men. S Anup Shrestha Age: 18 School: Nanyang Polytechnic I am going to head to the movies, and play football like every day! I will be going for a cruise with family, and then probably get some part time job in my free time. S Kulvin Kaur Age: 19 School: Republic Polytechnic I will be spending my time catching up on my hobbies, such as volunteering at the SPCA. I am looking forward to spending time with the animals. Wolverine is fantastic as usual, but we exceptionally love the brilliant performances of McAvoy and Lawrence, both playing characters who are full of pain and emotional hurt. We have always known Professor X as a wise and nurturing leader, and to see Charles, the younger days of Professor X, as a confused young chap seems to draw us deeper into the movie. We also love the seemingly 3-sided triangle between Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr and Raven Darkhölme. Photo Credit: 20th Century Fox Transformers: Trans sf Age of Extinction Th 4thh instalment The iin n of the blockbuster franchise is officially our favourite. No Megan Fox, no Shia LaBeouf LaB Be eo ou o u and no Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, but replacing them are Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Pel Peltz ltz t a and a rather new faces in the Hollywood scene, Jack Reynor. We have to admit that the storyline is rather cliché, with the father-daughter issues W that ended with a happy ending, but there were many hilarious moments, especially between Stanley Tucci and China actress Li Bing Bing. We also love the action scenes between all the transformers, especially with the return of our all-time favourite villain Megatron. Not forgetting Dinobots - Grimlock and his other Dinobot counterparts, making their first appearance in the movie and is certainly what most fans c of the franchise would be looking out for. Wh Who ho doesn’t like Transformers? Not us, for sure! h 04 Y27784 348220 NTUC Nebo.indd 4-5 9/22/14 10:39 AM All I Want Is Derrick Hoh Deepanraj A C Ganesan and Emilia Tan Kening Beyoncé, Shakira, Pitbull and Singapore’s very own Derrick Hoh. Believe it or not, four of these superstars share something in common - they have made a name for themselves by belting out hits in not one but two languages. Derrick Hoh, better known as 何維健 (He Weijian), caught the eyes of the public when he first auditioned for Project SuperStar 2005, a nationwide singing talent search competition organised by Mediacorp. His good looks and singing chops earned recognition from not only the judges but also loyal and supportive fans who setup his very own fan club called the Derrick Hoh International Fan Club. From then on, it was the road to success and fame for the prolific singer. Having established himself in the Mandopop market, Derrick sprung a pleasant surprise in 2012. He released his debut English-language single, “Forever”, which proved to be a sweet entry into the international music scene as he successfully became the first Singaporean to hit the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Singles Chart. Off his latest English EP release titled “All I Want” included collaborations with Shakira’s producer as well as writers who have penned numerous hits for Christina Aguilera, Derrick dazzled his fans yet again. Derrick took time off to chat with nEbO’s writers, Deepanraj Ganesan n and Emilia Tan, on how he celebrates his holidays despite his busy schedule dule and reminisces on how he spent his holidays when he was still a student. den ent. t. Look out for exclusive ‘about-me’ facts from the mandopop star that perhaps even the most fanatic fan of his would not be aware of. With your busy schedule, how do you take time off to have fun and celebrate Christmas and New Year? I do take time off. I think everyone needs to relax at some point. Even when w I have to perform during u uring the holiday season,, I am in fact just having n ng fun and sharing joyy with the crowd I’m performing for. How different does the holiday season feel to you now as opposed to how it was when n you were a student? It used to be a time when you spend it with your closest people. Now that I have to spend it away from home most of the time, it has become more about keeping in touch with my closest ones and having a good time with the good people around me at the same time. As a student, what did you do during the holidays? I used to work during some of myy holid holidays. There was once I worked workke all summer to save enough enoug gh to enrol myself into a mus music sic course, only to be served serve d a notice that I had to get a la laptop for my tertiary education. edu ca I spent everything on that th laptop, and never got to take ta up that course. To you, what is the id ideal way to spend a holiday? To experience life away from home, experience e different cultures, not just cu visit places as a a e eally tourist but to really experience life like o ou a local when you att with visit. Doing that u love the people you o the just adds on to experience. If you have a choice, what are top 3 holiday destinations that you will want to go to? Iceland, Silicon Valley and North Korea. Are there any plans to release a single/album for the holiday season i.e. Christmas Covers? That is not a bad idea! But I think a dance single for the Chinese New Year might be much more interesting! W know that you have recently We re release an English EP – All I Want. W What was the inspiration to release a an English EP? I wanted to try something new, experiment a little and see where we e can go from there. It has turned out to c be a great learning experience for me b musically! m H How different is the English song industry from the Chinese one? Is in it harder to make it in the English In Industry? It depends on how you define ‘making it’ I guess. I am happy enough when people come to me and leave a message saying c th that they love my songs. The great result w we have achieved for this EP is a huge b bonus for me and my team. At the end of th the day, it’s just about making songs that p people enjoy, no matter which language I u use to put my tunes across. What are your future plans as an artiste? I hope I can get back to completing my mandarin album really soon. It’s been a long time coming and I can’t wait to introduce more new songs to my fans. For teenagers aspiring to make it in the Music Industry, what advice would you give them? It’s a time when any budding musician can make their songss known through the free e a ee and nd effective social media, a, so o if you are procrastinating t g ting about showing your own o e to music, there’s no time o waste. You only live once – it’s about time you put it out there. 07 Y27784 348220 NTUC Nebo.indd 6-7 9/22/14 10:40 AM A Youth Platform that Spearheads Volunteerism The top 12 finalists have emerged!
