Remittances, Diaspora and Microfinance
ACRA in collaboration with CeSPI invites you to the SELF-ORGANIZED EVENT AT THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM - DAKAR, FEBRUARY 2011 ACRA in collaboration with CeSPI invites you to the SELF-ORGANIZED EVENT AT THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM - DAKAR, FEBRUARY 2011 Remittances, Diaspora and Microfinance experiences, prospects and opportunities Remittances, Diaspora and Microfinance experiences, prospects and opportunities (Europe and Africa) Round Table In cooperation with: Groupe de recherche et d’échanges technologiques (GRET), International Network of Alternative Financial Institutions (INAFI), Union Financière Mutualiste UFM de Louga, Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire (IFAN), Partenariat pour la mobilisation de l’épargne et le crédit au Sénégal PAMECAS, and Union Rurale des Mutuelles d’Epargne et de Crédit du Sénégal URMECS. The African Diaspora - Africans and African descendants has been named as the 6th region of the African continent, while its presence is becoming more significant, active and integrated in the western world, also in the economic sphere. The Diaspora has more likely been identified by academicians, governments, international agencies and non-governmental organizations as actor of a possible change for development in origin countries, thanks to its transnational role and to the scale of its interventions (local, national, regional, pan-African). One of the aspects that make Diaspora so crucial - representing a strong link and moral obligation with the family - refers to the large flows of remittances that migrants send home and that count for a fundamental contribute to their family and state economy. Through remittances migrants provide help to cover family consumption needs, housing reparations, school and health expenses and also to support entrepreneurial activities and investments back in the country. Moreover, remittances reach single families and individuals living in dispersed rural areas. On one side, remittances represent a vital contribute from migrants to people living in poverty in remote areas, while most frequently remittances are not adequately valued through financial instruments and products that could instead facilitate a channelling into job generating activities. On the other side, Microfinance institutions are often the only existing financial institution in rural areas and they are those more interested in employing remittances into productive/ micro-entrepreneurial activities, adapting their services to the needs of migrants and their families. The objective of this event is to discuss the role of migrants for development with particular interest for the possible and existing link between remittances and micro-finance institutions. To this purpose different key players will bring their contribution from their concrete experience. The session will be open to a frank debate and a Q&A session.
