Tonight, in the category of extraordinary leadership, we are proud to recognize the achievements of our 2014 Gala Auction Co-Chairs, High School parents David and Tammy Garrison and Grade School parents, Ethan and Heidi Whitehill for their tireless efforts to bring another fabulous and successful Sion Gala to the Starlight Theater. As we celebrate this year’s theme…Lights, Camera, Auction!, we also congratulate and thank our best-supporting Step-Up chairs, Kenon and Kelly Qamar and Ellen and Chris Pantanius. We are thrilled that they will be returning as the leading Co-Chairs to star in the highly anticipated sequel, Gala Auction 2015! Sion’s annual Gala Auction truly gives our community the opportunity to continue telling the incredible story of Notre Dame de Sion School. Like a well-written screenplay for an epic film, a Sion education is the key to our students being given every opportunity to achieve their own award winning performance. Tonight we are the producers of a blockbuster adventure and excel in our ability to provide a premier educational experience for our current students and future Sion students to come. Broderick Head of School 2 Gala Auction 2014 A message from the Gala Auction 2014 Chairs Dear Friends of Sion, We welcome you to this year’s Gala event: Lights, Camera, Auction! Our return to Starlight Theatre celebrates the spirit of coming together in support of our award-winning school. Your starring role in the evening ensures that Sion continues its mission of providing a premiere independent Catholic education, while preparing students for socially responsible, values based leadership in a culturally and religiously diverse world. We know this evening will be magic thanks to a dedicated cast of volunteers and devoted staff led by Chris Broderick. The Sion Advancement staff of Celeste Greenlee, Stephanie Volk, Lauren Golden, Tracy Jones, Maggie Smith and Emily Taylor worked tirelessly to stage a memorable gala. We give heart-felt thanks to our Honorary Chairs Pat and Bob Hardin and Rosalie O’Connell. Their support of the school continues to be significantly generous. On behalf of the entire Sion family, we are deeply grateful for their kind and continued involvement. Thank you for all you do for Sion. We appreciate each of you! Hooray for Hollywood and Vive Sion! David and Tammy Garrison Ethan and Heidi Whitehill 3 Notre Dame de Sion School A message from the Gala Auction 2015 Chairs Dear Sion Parents and Friends, Welcome to the Sion Gala Auction 2014! As the Step-Up Co-Chairs for this year’s Gala we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to play a part in the tremendous outpouring of planning, coordination, energy, and effort required to execute this important event. We are grateful to each of the many Sion supporters who responded to requests for help with an immediate and resounding “Yes!” and are impressed with the incredible creativity and expertise each committee chair and volunteer brought to bear. The beautiful event we enjoy tonight could not have come together without the efforts of many, and it has been a humbling and rewarding experience for us to be a part of the planning team. As we enjoy the delicious meal, gorgeous decorations, and camaraderie that are part of tonight’s Gala, our thoughts already are turning to the 2015 Sion Gala Auction and our role as Auction Chairs. With our experiences this past year as a foundation, we’re excited to get started (after just a brief break) planning next year’s fabulous event! Thank you again for all of your support this year, and we look forward to working with you, our incredible Sion community, to make the 2015 Sion Gala Auction an evening to remember! This year, all the money raised through the 2014 Fund-A-Need will go directly toward Robtics and S.T.E.M. Read and learn about Robtics and S.T.E.M. and consider making a special gift for a special project. S.T.E.M. brings together the sciences, technology, engineering and math in interdisciplinary realworld lessons and experiences in contexts that make connections among schools, communities and students with their future employers. Robotics is an important S.T.E.M. experience which allows students to generate and apply ideas, learn by doing and collaborating, experiment and design, compete and invent while gaining the knowledge to build a better world. Primary Grades Fostering interest in younger students comes through concepts and products designed specifically for them, such as small controllable, modifiable and constructible robots. These are perfect tools for teaching sequencing, estimation, problem-solving and coding concepts through the context of stories or curricula in the classroom, which are easier to grasp for students. Intermediate and Middle School Engaging older students is project-based, hands-on learning with products that meets high interest, yet takes them from learning content and process to application of their knowledge through building, creating and sharing their discoveries, ideas and creations with a wider audience. From simple Lego robotics to programmable self-constructed robotic and coding concepts will advance and have opportunity to become involved in cooperative and friendly competitions such as First Lego League, National S.T.E.M. Video Game challenge, or Microsoft Imagine Cup. Middle School and High School Our older students will become involved in higher thinking, comprehensive inquiry, design and construction of robots and products that utilize S.T.E.M. concepts. The experiences become more sports-style team driven such as the First Tech Challenge which progresses from the Lego built robots to designing, building, and programming built from scratch robots to compete on a 12 X 12’ field in an Alliance format against other teams. Awards are given for the competition as well as community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. 14 Gala Auction 2014 auction rules • Successful bidders may pay with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, or Discover.
