dfcu Bank recently integrated its mobile banking platform - dfcu mobile; with
mobile money. Tell us more about this innovation.
dfcu Bank is one of the pioneer banks of this innovation that represents the ultimate
convergence between the banking sector and the telecom industry. We have partnered with
the telecom mobile money providers to offer a seamless solution called ‘Push/Pull’, which
allows our mutual customers to transfer money from their mobile money wallets to their dfcu
bank accounts without setting foot in the bank. Using the same platform, you can transfer
money from your bank account to top-up your mobile money instantly. This is yet another
convenient option that allows dfcu customers to deposit or access their funds anytime,
anywhere without having to visit a branch.
How does it work?
To transfer mobile money to your dfcu bank account, you simply go to the mobile money
menu on your phone. Select ‘financial services’ and choose dfcu bank. This leads you to
a screen where you indicate the amount to transfer and the receiving bank account. Your
mobile money wallet then gets debited and your dfcu account is credited instantly.

It has been said that a large proportion of the Ugandan population does not
have access to banking services? How is this new service going to improve
access to banking services?
About 70% of the Ugandan population still remains unbanked. There are just over 5 million
bank accounts in the country. Banks have been somewhat limited in their outreach to the
population as it is expensive to set up brick and mortar branches at all key locations in the
city and country at large.
With this service, anyone near a mobile money agent can deposit money on their phone and
then transfer it to their bank account without having to visit the bank. There are over 70,000
active mobile money agents around Uganda. dfcu bank has 45 branches equitably spread
across the country. This means greater convenience and in effect, banking at your doorstep.
Ultimately we expect to see more people joining the formal banking system.
4.
How can I access the dfcu ‘Push/Pull’ service?
You simply need to have a dfcu account and register for mobile banking at your nearest
branch. You must also be registered on mobile money using the same mobile number. You
will then receive your PIN and you can dial *240# to access the Mobile Banking menu for
the bank-to-mobile money transfer. Similarly, you can access the respective mobile money
menus to transfer your ‘mobile money’ to your dfcu Bank account.

Is dfcu mobile secure?
Our state-of-the-art enterprise firewalls keep the bank’s systems and electronic banking links secure.
We have also deployed secure socket encryptions on all online transactions that protect the bank and
customers from hackers. We have also taken several other steps to mitigate any risks including:
•
You must be registered at the bank with an account and provide your full personal information.
Only one phone number can be linked to your bank account.
•
To access the service on the phone you must use a password only known to you. The first time
you receive your PIN, you are forced to change it to one that is private and personal.
•
We have placed limits on how much money you can transfer to mobile money within a day.
•
Through our relationship with the telecoms, we can track and trace every transaction.
•
We carefully take customers through security tips including, keeping their PINs private, deleting
bank messages from their phones, and setting passwords on their phones.
7.
Which other electronic banking platforms does dfcu Bank offer?
We have a robust Internet banking platform that has both Individual and Corporate modules. At the
click of a mouse, customers can transfer funds to other banks locally and internationally as well as
have access to unlimited real time statements of their accounts. They can also pay their bills and taxes
online. Additionally we have 45 dfcu ATMs and we are also linked to the Interswitch network which
gives our customers over 290 ATM points country wide.
8.
What other technological innovations should we look out for in the near future?
