Tim Kromminga Thank you for your support through this past year. The impact you have made can be seen every day through our patient and family experiences in a variety of areas. Your financial contributions have provided enhanced environments for Avera’s tiniest babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and aging seniors at the new Avera Prince of Peace, continued genomic cancer research for cancer patients at Avera Cancer Institute and lodging for out-of-town families at the Walsh Family Village. This list goes on, which demonstrates the significance of your support! Your support ensures our healing mission can continue serving those in need, extending the healing ministry of Jesus. Your gifts to benefit the NICU support babies and their families during one of the most critical times of their lives. The newly renovated NICU facility provides private rooms to improve the family experience, laundry facilities to allow for convenience during extended stays and access to the Women’s Center amenities and chapel to further our mission and help reduce stress during critical moments. Thank you for making these advancements possible. The ever-changing world of cancer care continues to make strides through cutting-edge genomic cancer research. Thanks to your contributions, genomic research improves our treatment approach which ultimately leads to more lives saved. We are fortunate to have philanthropic support from partners like you who pave the way for transforming cancer care. In conjunction with the cancer genomic research program, the Avera McKennan Foundation recently received the Community Innovation Grant from the Bush Foundation. With these funds, the Avera Rural Cancer Advisory Board was formed to aid in research and gain a better understanding of the unique circumstances of farmers when faced with a cancer diagnosis. We are excited to work with this volunteer group to glean their expertise and reduce barriers for cancer care in rural communities. The future of health care is ever changing. Thanks to planned gifts, Avera McKennan can ensure our healing ministry will be available for future generations. Just as Helen McKennan made her planned gift over 100 years ago, we are grateful to those who have included Avera McKennan in their estate or will. Your gifts impact our communities for centuries. Throughout our annual report you will see firsthand the impact you have made for patients and families. Whether it’s supporting an annual event, capital campaign or ensuring the mission of Avera is available for generations to come through planned giving, your support enhances the lives of the community. To begin planting the seeds among local farmers and ranchers, a board consisting of rural residents, oncologists, community partners and Avera staff has been formed. Officially called the Avera Rural Cancer Advisory Board, its first official meeting was held on October 5, 2015. Earlier this summer, board member Walt Bones invited Avera oncologists to tour his family’s grain and lifestock operation, Hexad Farms, near Parker, S.D. The physicians gained a better understanding of the lifestyle of the rural patients. Awareness, Screening & Education “Regardless of their health, I think farmers are ingrained with how much is at risk when a crop is ready to be harvested. When it’s ready to go, it’s ready to go.” Walter Bones, Farmer, Hexad Farms Walt Bones Those who work hard to feed others often find themselves in a state of starvation when it comes to cancer care. And it’s not necessarily access. The demands of traditional farm and ranch life are the main issues and serve as the driving force for this groundbreaking initiative. A farmer’s lifestyle is not always conducive to preventive health measures and treatments. This board is taking the time to explain first hand just how a rural resident lives, so Avera’s skilled team of providers can begin forming a plan to transform cancer care. Jim Woster Jim Woster, co-chair of Avera’s Rural Cancer Advisory Board, worked in the livestock industry for years. His advisory board role includes listening to rural residents, whose input will inform Avera’s work to improve its cancer-related care. He and other volunteer rural residents have committed their time and energy to form this board and welcome feedback from the community and others who wish to get involved. The Avera Health System is also working to establish a new call center to provide 24/7 support to its cancer patients in the future. For more information on the Avera Rural Cancer Advisory Board, please call 605-322-8900. 2014-2015 Annual Report 5 One Hundred for 100 Paves the Way for the Future Walking in the footsteps of Avera McKennan’s legacy leaders, the community continues to be inspired from Helen McKennan and the Presentation and Benedictine Sisters’ gifts to provide quality health care. Philanthropy is the foundation of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. Through financial partnerships of the past and gifts made today, you are creating the future of health care for upcoming generations in your community. Since 2013, the Avera McKennan Foundation has been raising funds to support the Caring for Community: Campaign for Avera Prince of Peace. Included in that campaign was the Focus on Faith Sacred Heart Chapel which was dedicated in honor of the late Jeremiah Murphy thanks to a generous matching gift and loyal donors. Through your gifts, more than $3 million was raised to construct the state-of-the-art facility which includes a centralized and expanded chapel, private rooms and unique Main Street concept. Today, residents, family members and staff are taking full advantage of the enhanced amenities and are thankful for the opportunity to further Avera’s mission thanks to your gifts. 6 Avera McKennan Foundation Mike and Twila Perkinson Charles W. and Delilah + Petersen Dr. James J.
