We believe that this is achieved through the ISTA experience. Educators play a key role in the fulfillment of our mission. We therefore offer educators worldwide the opportunity to come together to develop themselves, their pedagogy and their skills, equipping and empowering them to bring about this change through theatre. ISTA brings together young people, artists and teachers from different countries in different settings to experience, create and learn about theatre. Recognise your power as an actor and develop tools to create your own work. Venue: SSK 4th Floor-Dance Room 1 Making mighty moves - the moving tool box with Nandi Bhebhe The participants will learn movement as well as learn easy ways to create their own choreographies. Further more we will explore the relationship between text and movement and interesting ways you can use movement to enhance a message. Venue: : SSK 4th Floor-Dance Room 3 You do not wear a mask: the mask owns you with Marco Luly The most important features of Commedia dell’Arte are masks, stock characters and improvisation. Masks teach awareness and control of movements and gestures. The masks compel the performer to recognise the essential gestures and avoid the superfluous ones. Venue: SSK 4th Floor-Dance Room 1 Villain! Your resting days are done! with Mike Pasternak Wicked villains and upright heroes clash in gesture and language. Ghosts and vampires weave a strange stage fabric of romance and mythical fantasy. Theatrical conventions combine to make a workshop full of energy, fun and theatre. Venue: SSK 4th Floor-Dance Room 3 LOCAL WORKSHOP LEADERS The art of ceramics with Saniye Suslu and Linda Malkas Mete In this workshop the important role of traditional Turkish handcraft will be introduced and design work will be created and added to ceramic objects. 16 Workshop Descriptions Workshop Descriptions Workshop Descriptions Workshop Descriptions Workshop Descriptions Workshop Descriptions Venue: SSK- 3rd Floor: Art Room 1 Exploring a new culture through music with M. Ömer Tokatlı In this workshop students will learn a traditional Turkish song called Silifkenin Yoğurdu and do some rhythmic work around it. They will be using wooden spoons to accompany the song and will be introduced to the Turkish culture as part of the workshop. Venue: SSK -1st Floor : Small Theatre Mountain eagles with Okay Dede In this workshop participants will explore the techniques of Turkish folk music and find ways to communicate it through music and dance. This workshop will help them gain familiarity with the world famous Turkish folk dancing, music and culture. At the end of the workshop they will be able to present basic figures and movements of this dance together. Venue: SSK- 4th Floor: Dance Room 2 17 Kristen van Ginhoven – Artistic director I am a Canadian who lives in the United States and is married to a Brit. I work as a director, producer, educator and actor. My favorite job is being Artistic Director of WAM Theatre. It takes all my skills in organisation and directing and puts them into one job. I also love creating theatre that is philanthropy, as WAM Theatre donates funds from each show towards creating opportunities for women and girls. I love plays that celebrate theatricality. I’m drawn to stories that make me think, feel and question. I crave theatre that is imaginatively done and ensemble based, with lots of movement and music. I’ve worked at the Stratford Festival of Canada and many other theatres in the United States and Canada. I used to teach at the International School of Brussels where I got involved with ISTA and even hosted. I now also work as an ISTA consultant helping with the hosting calendar. I love being part of the ISTA community. Fenella Kelly – Rep I am a drama specialist and dancer who has worked all over the world as a teacher, teacher trainer, choreographer and performer. I studied drama and theatre in education for my undergraduate and master’s degrees, and also have TESOL and TEFL training. Most recently I worked in Mumbai at the American School of Bombay as HS theatre director but am now a freelance artist based in the United Kingdom. I started off as a musician and dancer, and have been in jazz bands and contemporary dance companies in Turkey, Brazil and India, but I also do Latin dance - salsa and tango. For the last six years I have been learning Kathakali. I love to bring theatre to people that may not have access to the arts and have initiated theatre programs in remote parts of Ethiopia and in Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia. I have worked for ISTA since 1999 and was on the board of trustees for six years. During that time I hosted festivals in Turkey, Egypt, Brazil and India. During my time on the artist pool I have been Rep at on average two festivals a year; worked as TWL at MS, HS festivals and at TaPS. I am also a workshop leader for the IB Theatre course and have run training for Categories 1, 2 and 3. Student Ensemble Leaders Anna Andresen I’m an actor, writer and director based in London. Since graduating from both the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and Drama Centre London I’ve worked extensively 12 across the industry. From West End theatre, television and film to writing, producing and performing a one-woman comedy show for Edinburgh, coaching students applying for drama school and leading workshops in both London and New York. I’m especially interested in theatre as a storytelling medium and take inspiration from ordinary and extraordinary places, people and real-life events to vividly recreate experiences and memories in a unique theatrical medium. Much of my work has involved immersive-style performance to take an audience on a journey that entertains but also connects them in a more immediate and educational way. Nandi Bhebhe I am a London based dance artist, trained at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Since then I have been performing in dance companies and theatre projects such as Vocab Dance Company, Fela! On Broadway and Kneehigh Theatre Company. I also choreograph and teach, giving workshops regularly throughout the United Kingdom. I’m really interested in the collaborative and devising process and ways in which different art forms support one another. Coming from a multi media training, I love work that interweaves these different forms. Be it movement, music, text, design - it excites me to explore the ways they connect. 18 Biographies Biographies Ista Artist Bios Biographies Biographies Marco Luly I am an Italian theatre specialist, particularly in the production of Commedia dell’Arte, medieval theatre and of plays by the father of Italian Comedy, Carlo Goldoni. I have founded my company Luoghi dell’Arte in 1990, and have been artistic director of the company ever since. I have directed and acted in Commedia, and created new scripts for this form. I have won distinctions for rediscovering medieval and Renaissance period manuscripts and scenarios, and adapting them in a modern style, and have won a string of awards such as best director and author on several occasions at medieval and Renaissance theatre festivals. Mike Pasternak I am recently retired, after many years at the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) with teaching experiences in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States; following a brief sojourn as a university research fellow exploring theatre and learning approaches. ISTA posts include ensemble leader/teacher trainer, president of the board of trustees and honorary life member. I have always loved stories - through speech, song, image or movement - always been fascinated by accounts of the human adventure. The urge to learn pulled me into contact with the theories of Laban. My growth as a theatre person was heavily influenced by personal experiences and interactions with Bola, Barba, Brook and Benison. Observer Danielle Veilleux I am a curriculum manager for cross-programme development (innovation and alignment) at the IB global office in The Hague, The Netherlands. After completing my degree at the Royal CSSD in London, I taught middle school Drama and high school Theatre in a variety of international schools. I worked as an IB Educator, MYP senior moderator, DP examiner and ISTA workshop leader before joining the IB as a curriculum developer for MYP Arts and Projects. After four years and completing the MYP programme review (MYP: the next chapter) I recently joined the cross-programme department within the academic team. This year, I steered the Peterson Academic symposium 2015; a highly successful launch of the conversation ‘Making time for creativity; why does it matter?’ I continue my work on creativity with the IB community and beyond, at regional conferences and professional development workshops around the world. Local Workshop Leaders Saniye Suslu I was born in Rize in 1977 and I graduated from the Fine Arts Faculty University in 2006.
