RVOAC SURVEY
Follow-Up Results
What a difference eight months can make. In
late August, the RV Owners’ Advisory Council
conducted a follow-up to January’s annual
Good Sam Club member survey. The council
wanted to see if rising fuel prices were continuing to affect members’ RVing preferences
and lifestyle choices. Click on the RVer Rights
tab in RV Community to see the findings of
the follow-up survey.
Your chance to win RV accessories and
travel products is just a mouse-click
away. December’s online giveaway lineup
includes a JetPack pontoon boat, a
memory-foam mattress with a goosedown cover from BedInABox, Good Sam
Emergency Road Service Platinum
memberships and PupLight safety lights.

Fight for Your Rights
Good Sam can help fend off prohibitive parking restrictions
ought an RV? Check. Took a memorable
vacation? Check. Have a place on your
property to park the rig? Not so sure.
Obviously, a key consideration for any RV
owner or prospective owner is where to
keep the rig when it’s not being driven.
As more towns and cities place restrictions on our right to park our rigs
on both private property and public
streets, places to park our RVs are getting harder to come by. At the same
time, it’s becoming more difficult to find
space at RV-storage facilities across the country.
The Good Sam Club doesn’t support permanent street parking of RVs, as we don’t believe
public streets should become RV-storage lots.
However, we do suggest that cities allow onstreet parking for a reasonable period of time,
preferably at least 72 hours, so people can load
and unload their rigs. We also believe that all
vehicles should be subject to the same restrictions. If RVs are banned, then cars, trucks and
motorcycles shouldn’t be allowed to park permanently on city streets.
Things get a bit more complicated when local
municipalities attempt to restrict RV parking
on private property. We take the position that
people should be allowed to park any vehicle on
their own property as long as it doesn’t present
a health or safety hazard. On the other hand, if
parking restrictions on private property are
enacted purely for aesthetic reasons, we feel
that the rights of RV owners are compromised.
Homeowner-association covenants, codes
and restrictions are a different matter. You may
find that included in your neighborhood’s rules
about the color of your house, the height of
your trees and the size of your mailbox are regulations about RV parking both on the street
and on your private property. Neighborhood
CC&Rs are binding to the property owners,
and it’s generally difficult to get homeowner
organizations to change them.
Those of us who aren’t under a CC&R obli-

gation generally have a better chance of being
able to park our vehicles without restriction.
However, hundreds of cities and towns across
the country have implemented new parking
ordinances or started enforcing existing
ones to restrict the right to park on
our own property.
Every RV-parking situation is different, and what works for one community may not work for another.
Regardless, many Good Sam members have found that their parking rights
are increasingly coming under attack.
Fortunately, we can help. We provide members with the Good Sam RV Parking Rights
Manual, which outlines existing cases and shows
how they’ve been resolved. Even more information is available on our website. Visit www.good
samclub.com/community and click on RVer
Rights. There, you’ll find newspaper articles,
member-submitted information and even the
ordinances themselves arranged by locality.
You can also get in touch with the Good Sam
Parking Rights Council. Each of our volunteer
members has extensive experience in fighting
local RV-parking restrictions and is available to
support fellow members who may be experiencing a problem.
Comprised of Chairman Terry Minger,
Tom Mauer (Ohio), Jack Olney (Idaho),
Joe Edstrom (Minnesota), Lucy Huddy
(California), Barry Larkin (Delaware) and Paul
Smith (who roams the country full-time in his
RV), the council has helped hundreds of Good
Sam members who face unfair and restrictive
parking ordinances. This volunteer body can
provide information about parking rights and
put you in touch with other members in your
community who can help.
We hope that you never have to overcome
this rather complex and unfortunate obstacle
to your RVing dreams. But if you find yourself
in the crosshairs of a restrictive parking ordinance, don’t be afraid to contact us for help.

A Park in the Storm
HURRICANE IKE knocked out the power
grid in our town of Shenandoah, Texas,
so we decided to pack up our Casita
travel trailer. We traveled north about
70 miles to the Bryan–College Station
area and found Primrose Lane RV Park.
Managers Gary and Nancy Hodges graciously welcomed us, even though they
were already beset by a number of other
Ike refugees as well as football fans visiting to see the Texas A&M game.
Primrose Lane offered a substantial
discount to storm-displaced campers,
a gesture that went above and beyond
what we expected under the circumstances. This pretty park is an example
of a very well-managed Good Sam
Park. It should be high on your list of
preferred parks when you find yourself
in this part of Texas.

learning about RV traveling. I’ve
noticed, however, that much of your
magazine is geared toward large RVs.
That’s fine, but with gas prices the way
they are, I’d like to draw readers’ attention to teardrop trailers. These are great
little towables that can be pulled by
smaller vehicles. They don’t cost a fortune to purchase or pull.

fished, I was 8 years old. My wife and
daughters had never fished.
Four days and one night of trying
yielded nothing. Many campers around
our site offered tips, and one gentleman
even offered a prayer. Still nothing.
On the way home, I looked my family over and couldn’t help but smile. It
wasn’t what we did or didn’t catch that
was important, it was the time we

Thank you. —
As a Chiropractor, I would
like to say that the Exerciser
2000 Elite™ enables people to
benefit themselves at home. It
is a valuable asset in moving
lymph fluid, oxygenating the
blood, increasing immune
system function, maintaining
mobility in the spine, and
additionally freeing up a spine
that has become stiff and
arthritic. —Garry Gorsuch, D.C.
After having a stroke, I could no
longer exercise the way I used to.
As a result, I developed edema. A
friend of mine introduced me to
the Exerciser 2000 Elite™. I loved
it and I purchased one for myself.
After using the machine daily
for a few weeks, my symptoms
of edema were completely gone.
I now use the machine twice a
day for 16 minutes each time on
speed 3. What a wonderful way to
exercise.—Robert M.
I am in my late 80’s and have diabetes.
The first thing I noticed when I
started using my machine was that
my feet were warm when I went to
bed. They were always ice cold before.
Because one of my problems is poor
circulation, I use the machine three
times a day for 10 minutes each; in
the morning, late afternoon and just
before bed. I almost forgot to mention
that I have not been able to lift my
arms above my head. Now I can do it.
You think that’s no big deal until you

FAREWELL
GOODBYE TO A
GREAT TEACHER
Gaylord Maxwell passed
along his passion for RVing
Gaylord Maxwell, an
author and educator
who taught thousands of people how
to get the most out
of RVing, died on
September 20 following a brief illness.
To the many Good
Sam Club members
who attended his Rally seminars and RV
Life on Wheels educational programs, the
83-year-old Maxwell may best be remembered for the vast knowledge he shared
with RVers. To colleagues, Maxwell was
known as a consummate professional
who tirelessly called for improved product
quality and solid customer service.
Born in Robinson, Illinois, Maxwell
served in the Navy during World War II
and later moved to Hollywood to become
an actor. When acting parts didn’t materialize, he became a teacher and sold
camping supplies during the summer
from a store he founded on a $1,000
loan. Maxwell later branched out into selling RVs, building a business that included
stores across Southern California.
After retiring from RV sales, Maxwell
wrote RV-related trade and consumer
articles for many of the Good Sam Club’s
affiliated publications. In 1996, he
founded RV Life on Wheels, a seminar
series covering about 150 RV-related
topics. Launched at the University of
Idaho, the RV Life on Wheels program
expanded over the years to campuses in
Pennsylvania, Arizona, Kentucky and
Iowa and educated some 10,000 RVers.
Maxwell is survived by his wife, Margie.
Business, published by the Good Sam Club’s parent company,
recently named its Top 50 RV Dealers. The retailers were picked by
a five-member panel of industry representatives who chose from dealers
nominated by RV manufacturers.
“These dealers were selected for outstanding personal customer service
along with sound business practices and forward-thinking philosophies,”
says Sherman Goldenberg, RV Business publisher.
Among the honored retailers are the following Blue Ribbon dealers who,
says Goldenberg, stand out as being “something really special.”
• ALPIN HAUS, Amsterdam, New York
• GUARANTY RV, Junction City, Oregon
• LAZYDAYS RV CENTER, Seffner, Florida
• MIKE THOMPSON RV CENTER, Santa Fe Springs, California
• TOM JOHNSON RV CENTER, Marion, North Carolina
Tom Johnson (pictured above) also was singled out for the Dave Altman
Award as best representing the spirit of the RV industry.

Winter Wanderlust
Before putting your rig in storage, consider the joys of winter camping
Dear Joe

occasional light
snow. Any helpful

JOE: It’s no secret to experienced RVers that
cold-weather months can be a great time to go
RVing. Traffic’s lighter, campgrounds aren’t
crowded, and the weather’s stimulating.
Today’s RVs are insulated, have efficient heating systems and provide a snug refuge from foul
weather. RVers can whip up soup, coffee or hot
chocolate on the kitchen stove. Comfort lovers
can curl up on the couch with a good book,
while adventurers can explore the frosty outdoors. And adding more layers of clothing is no
problem, thanks to the rig’s closets and drawers.
A few preparations can make cold-weather
camping easy. Check the condition of your
tires and their air pressure. Be sure your
coolant has the appropriate mix of antifreeze.
And don’t forget to fill
your windshield-washer
reservoir and check your
windshield wipers.
You may want to carry
tire chains if you plan on
traversing snowy roads.
Practice putting on the
chains while the rig’s
parked at your home
where it’s warm and dry.
Motorhome owners should
consider the damage a
broken tire chain could
inflict upon the fiberglass body of their rig. It
might be better to avoid driving when conditions require the use of chains.
Your RV’s forced-air furnace
should be adequate for keeping
the interior warm. The freshwater tanks, water pump, pipes,
drains, holding tanks and
dumping valves of many RVs are
kept warm in their enclosed
compartments, likewise, by ducts
from the furnace. As long as the furnace runs
periodically, the water in the pipes and tanks
shouldn’t freeze.
Remember, though, that a forced-air furnace, in addition to consuming propane, will
draw up to seven amps of electricity while
operating. This could represent a considerable
drain on the coach batteries if electric hookups
aren’t available.
When electric hookups are available, you can
reduce consumption of propane by using the
furnace to take the chill out of the air and then
switching to a portable electric heater. The furnace in our RV rarely comes on when we use
our electric heater, and that means the plumbing compartment isn’t receiving any heat. To
protect the plumbing from the cold, we
installed an electric drop cord with a 40-watt
light bulb in our plumbing compartment. The
heat from the light bulb is sufficient to keep
things from freezing.
VICKI: Don’t let heat escape from your RV. Use
heavy drapes or curtains to insulate the coach
windows against the cold. Your local hardware
store probably carries plastic storm windows
that you heat-shrink into place. You can also
create your own storm windows by covering
the glass with clear, heavy vinyl.
Cover the insides of roof vents and skylights
with snap-on vinyl covers available at RV accessory stores. Or make your own insulation by
cutting blocks of Styrofoam a little larger than
the roof-vent and skylight openings. Just stuff
the Styrofoam blocks into the openings. Blocks
During the winter, traffic
is lighter, campgrounds

weather is stimulating.
of foam rubber might also do the job.
Rugs add insulation to vinyl or tile flooring.
You can also use them over carpeting to protect

About the Kievas
In addition to writing RV Insight, their
monthly advice column in Highways,
and speaking at RV gatherings across
the continent, Joe and Vicki Kieva have
published a number of books and
e-books on RVing. Their latest e-book,
RV Buyer’s Homework, takes prospective RV shoppers through the necessary
steps of choosing the right rig. The book
offers tips on determining the best floor
plan to suit your needs and evaluating
overall livability. All of the Kievas’ books,
e-books and DVDs are available on
their website, www.rvknowhow.com.
against tracked-in dirt and moisture.
Disconnect, drain and store your
water and sewer hoses when temperatures approach freezing. When the temperature looks like it might drop below
40 degrees, we connect our hoses just
long enough to fill our water tank and
empty our holding tanks. This way, we
avoid dealing with stiff or frozen hoses.
Some cold-weather RVers winterize
and then don’t use their plumbing system at all. Instead, they carry containers
of drinking water inside the living areas
of their rigs and rely solely upon the
campground’s restroom facilities. Call
ahead to the campground if this is your
plan. Some campgrounds close their restrooms during the off-season, and others
may provide electrical hookups only.
Before driving into an area on a dirt
road, consider what conditions will be
like on that road after a heavy rain. If
possible, camp in a spot that’s exposed
to the heat of the sun and protected
from the chill of the wind. Keep in
mind that snow accumulating on overhanging tree limbs may eventually drop
off in heavy clumps or perhaps bring
brittle branches down on your rig.
Winter RVing doesn’t have to include
snow, rain and cold. Don’t be surprised
to find yourself in an almost empty
campground experiencing balmy days.

t’s been a tough year on many
levels, and lumps of coal may
make a comeback as this year’s
stocking stuffer of choice. But
don’t let anything short
of complete financial ruin
dampen your holiday
spirits. To paraphrase
the old adage, happiness
is the best revenge.
I’m always at my happiest
when I’m cooking with friends.
For the most part, though, “cooking with friends” is a euphemism
for me doing the work while my
friends enjoy a glass of wine and wax
poetic from the built-in couch at the nose end
of my Toastermobile. But I have a few friends
whose cooking skills merit a place in my
kitchen. One of them is Elizabeth Karmel, my
grilling guru and author of Taming the Flame.
After enjoying each other’s culinary company in
the kitchen and backyard for so many years, we
recently coauthored a book on making pizza on
the grill. It’s called—not coincidentally—Pizza
I
Sugar and Spice Pecans
1/3
cup brown sugar
cup white sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2/3
on the Grill (a shameless plug, but it
makes an awesome Christmas gift
for anyone who likes pizza,
enjoys grilling or believes—or
ever believed—in Santa Claus).
Whenever Elizabeth and I
get together to cook, she sets
out a few small snacks to
fuel the cooking process
and to accompany the inevitable

My favorite is her recipe for candied nuts, which will transform even

And the taste is so rich that you’d swear a

Spread sugared nuts in a single layer on a cookie sheet fitted with a Silpat nonstick liner or

Are Two Batteries Better than One?

Sterling Carpenter, FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE
BOB: I agree with using two 6-volt batteries
wired in series. A converter or inverter/charger
will work fine but will be more efficient if it’s
equipped with a multistage charger. Most fifth
wheels aren’t equipped from the factory with an
inverter. If it has the typical converter, then it
will never charge the batteries properly. If that’s
the case, make the investment in a multistage
charger, especially if you plan on doing a lot of
dry camping.

with the black-water tank plugging up and filling

We use Aqua-Kem regularly, and since coming home from the last trip, we’ve left enzymes
in the tank. We’ve used Rid-X and yeast for a

When we’re on the road, I put ice cubes in

think there may be a buildup.
On every trip, we have to route the water

a wand and go down and clear it out. Any ideas

I JUST READ YOUR ARTICLE in the September
Highways about rodents that eat RV wiring.
We’ve had our share of problems with these
animals here in Arizona.
Mothballs are effective at keeping these
nasty critters at bay, but in this hot and dry climate, they “melt” very quickly. What I’ve found
to be more effective (and they don’t evaporate
as quickly) are urinal tablets. These are the big
pink tablets you see in the basin of urinals in
men’s rooms. They’re available at janitor-supply
stores. I place them on top of the gas tank,
in the generator bay and under the hood of
our RV. I hope this suggestion helps.

too fast are two different issues.
If the tank is plugging, it’s
possible that something has
become lodged in the path
of the contents as it’s being
dumped. I’ve seen cases where
the owners use too much toilet
paper and not enough water and a mound is
built in the tank directly below the toilet. We
call this the “pyramid effect.”
Filling up fast is usually due to the size of the
tank—and how much liquid is run each time
the toilet is flushed. Reduced capacity can also

We purchased a small bottle of peppermint essence at our local herbal
drug store. The clerk was familiar with
using it for rodent control and recommended a less expensive bottle for
about $7. It sure was worth it!
I soaked cotton balls with the
essence and then placed them in small
plastic bags with cuts made in the plastic to allow the fragrance of the peppermint to escape over time. We put
plenty of bags all around the rig and in
the engine compartment, keeping track
of the number we distributed.
Because essence is alcohol based,
you don’t want it to evaporate too fast.
At the end of our storage, we could still
smell peppermint odor in the rig. Good
thing it’s a pleasant smell. Even better,
there’s no damage to anything.

BOB: I received a lot of responses to
the letters in the September edition of
Tech Topics regarding critters eating RV
wiring, including the creative solutions
described in the above letters. While
many of these products keep the
rodents away, they may be unhealthy
for humans. I suggest that you carefully
study any ramifications of using products such as mothballs and urinal
tablets, as well as other repellents.
One reader educated me on why
rodents love wiring. In the early days,
wire looms were wrapped with cottoncoated material. As time went by, the
wire was wrapped in plastic coating
made from petroleum. Now wire insulation is made from plastic that derives
from soybeans and corn. So we’re actually providing food for these critters.
Go figure.

Michigan during winter. I’m wondering
though, if it’s feasible to camp out in
my trailer during the winter months?
While hooked up, I’d run the furnace,
but what would I have to do while traveling to eliminate frozen pipes?
Richard Sandfs, BELLEVILLE , MICHIGAN
BOB: Winter travel offers great views
and solitude, but it requires more preparation and effort to keep things working
smoothly. Most travel trailers aren’t
designed to be used in severe weather.
Unless water lines are routed across the
trailer or exposed to the outside (like
inside an uninsulated compartment),
the furnace should keep them from
freezing in moderately cold temperatures. But you’ll have to make sure warm
air is circulating into the areas where the
pipes are routed. Most times this can be
achieved by opening the cabinets. Storm
windows or adding a vapor barrier to
your windows using plastic film can
Page 25
make all the difference. Plug the roof
vents with some type of insulation.
If you’re on the road in cold weather,
you’ll have to run the furnace while
towing. While this practice is considered unsafe by some people, we’ve been
doing this for 38 years without problems. Just make sure you turn the furnace (and other LP-gas appliances) off
before refueling.
Chances are, the holding tanks will
freeze unless you use heat blankets or
they’re mounted in heated compartments. You’ll need to use heat tape
around the water hose and dump
hose/valves. Heat tape and blankets typically operate on 120-volt AC power, so
it’s best to be hooked up to electric
when RVing in extreme weather.
You can add nontoxic antifreeze to
your water lines before the temperature
dips too low, but this is inconvenient. If
you winterize at night, you’ll need to keep
a jug of water in the bathroom for flush-
ing the toilet. You can make this process
somewhat easier by using an automatic
winterizing kit (available at RV-supply
stores), but it’s really best to stay home if
your furnace (or other sources of heat)
and above procedures don’t keep you
comfortable and your water lines flowing.

Canyon will create monthly payments
and weighs an extra 1,200 pounds.
In your opinion, should I make the
conversion on the S10 or purchase the
Canyon, or is there a better choice?
Also, will a braking system be
required in the dinghy?
Ron O’Neill, POULSBO, WASHINGTON
BOB: As you know, Ron, choosing a
dinghy vehicle is a personal matter, but I
think you’ll find the Canyon too heavy
to tow. The E-450 chassis has a gross
combination weight rating of 20,000
pounds, which may not be enough to
handle the bigger truck and coach body
with all your stuff and people aboard.
Adding a driveshaft disconnect system is not a very difficult job. Remco
(www.remcotowing.com, 800-228-2481)
offers kits that will work for virtually
all vehicles with driveshafts.
I definitely would use a braking system for your setup.
Weight Argument
MY HUSBAND AND I disagree about tow-
ing capacities of our 2004 Chevy dually truck. It’s a Duramax 3500 with the
trailer-towing package.
My husband says the new fifth wheel
I want, a Keystone Big Sky (either
model 350 or 340), is too heavy for our
truck. I asked Chevy if this truck could
tow the trailer and asked about the
weight rating. They said our truck could
tow around 16,000 pounds.
What do you say? My husband
insists that our truck isn’t big enough.
Karen Blaisdell, LAKE WALES, FLORIDA
BOB: OK, Karen, here’s the deal. The
answer to your question is very
mechanical, otherwise I wouldn’t
answer it for fear of having one of you
mad at me. Your truck is rated to tow
15,000 pounds, give or take a couple of
hundred pounds depending on how it’s
equipped and personal loading.
The only way to determine whether
the truck can tow the fifth wheels you’re
looking at is to have accurate wet
weights. That means someone is going
to have to weigh each model with full
water and propane. Most dealers are
not going to allow you to load the trailer for a trip, but they should accommodate your request to weigh each fifth
wheel before buying. You’ll have to estimate how much weight your stuff will
add and be honest with yourselves.
This one is too close to call. Either
one of those fifth wheels may be light
enough for your truck.

Last June we discovered the awning over our main slide-out was torn. In addition,

being assured by Jerry himself that he would

In June 2006, the transmission in our Sportsmoblie Class B, built on a Chevy extended-body

excellent job of arranging a motel for us and

There were no Chevrolet dealers in the area,
have to discuss it with his partners and he’d

he said he’d need to get some documentation
from Capital City Chevrolet, and that after
receiving it, he’d get back to me.
After several weeks of hearing nothing from
Jerry’s, I called once again and got the same

again and was told that they were going to do
something about this situation, but business
was bad and they asked if I could wait for a
while and they’d get back to me.
I still haven’t heard from Jerry’s Transmission.
I believe that I should be reimbursed for the cost
of the transmission repair. I expect a $2,000

housands of football fans recently
cheered Good Sam Club member
Mary Murray as she stood on the field of
Raymond James Stadium before kickoff
at a recent Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game in Florida.
Murray had come to the stadium to
accept the Community Quarterback Award
from the National Football League franchise in recognition of her work in the
local community. Murray and nine other
individuals were given footballs signed by
team members and presented by Shelton
Quarles, a former Bucs linebacker and
current coach. Murray also participated in
a tour of the Buccaneers’ practice facility
and was admitted to a team practice.
Murray, who’s a member of Florida’s
Trail Blazing Sams chapter, is no
stranger to volunteering, whether it’s
cleaning parks with fellow club members or donating goods to the local St.
Vincent DePaul’s thrift store with her
husband, Robin, who received Community Quarterback accolades last year.
“Volunteering is great,” says Mary.

AS HEARD ON PAUL HARVEY NEWS
New advanced portable heater can
cut your heating bill up to 50%
Heats a large room in minutes with even
heat wall to wall and floor to ceiling
Does not get hot, cannot start a fire and
will not reduce humidity or oxygen
A new advanced quartz
infrared portable heater, the
EdenPURE ™ , can cut your
heating bills by up to 50%.
You have probably heard
about the remarkable EdenPURE™ as heard on Paul Harvey News and on television
features across the nation.
The EdenPURE™ can pay
for itself in a matter of
weeks and then start putting
a great deal of extra money
in your pocket after that.
A major cause of residential fires in the United States
is portable heaters. But the
EdenPURE™ cannot cause a
fire. That is because the
quartz infrared heating element never gets to a temperature that can ignite anything.
The outside of the EdenPURE ™ only gets warm to
the touch so that it will not
burn children or pets. Pets
can sleep on it when it is operating without harm.
The advanced space-age
EdenPURE™ Quartz Infrared
Portable Heater also heats
the room evenly, wall-towall and floor-to-ceiling.
And, as you know, portable
heaters only heat an area a
few feet around the heater.
Unlike other heating
sources, the EdenPURE ™
cannot put poisonous carbon
monoxide into a room or any
type of fumes or any type of
harmful radiation.
Q. What is the origin of
this amazing heating element in the EdenPURE™?
A. This advanced heating
element was discovered accidentally by a man named
John Jones.
Q. What advantages does
infrared quartz tube heating
source have over other heating source products?
A. John Jones designed
his heating source around
the three most important
consumer benefits: economy, comfort, and safety.
In the EdenPURE ™ system, electricity is used to generate infrared light which, in
turn, creates a very safe heat.
Go To:
Never be cold again
Cannot start a fire; a child or animal
can touch or sit on it without harm
How it works:
Heats floor to the
same temperature
as ceiling.
CUTAWAY VIEW
1. Electricity ignites powerful
quartz infrared lamp.
2. The quartz infrared lamp without
combustion gently warms the
patented cured copper tubes.
3. The heat from the copper tubing rides the
humidity in the room and provides moist,
soft heat ceiling to floor, wall to wall without reducing oxygen or humidity.
SPECIAL READER’S DISCOUNT COUPON
After a great deal of research and development,
very efficient infrared heat
chambers were developed
that utilize three unique
patented solid copper heat
exchangers in one EdenPURE™ heater.
Q. How can a person cut
their heating bill by up to
50% with the EdenPURE™?
A. The EdenPURE™ will
heat a room in minutes.
Therefore, you can turn the
heat down in your house to as
low as 50 degrees, but the
room you are occupying,
which has the EdenPURE™,
will be warm and comfortable. The EdenPURE ™ is
portable. When you move to
another room, it will quickly
heat that room also. This can
drastically cut heating bills, in
some instances, by up to 50%.
The EdenPURE ™ comes
in 2 models. GEN3 Model
500 heats a room up to 300
square feet and GEN3 Model
1000 heats a room up to
1,000 square feet.
End of interview.
The EdenPURE ™ will
pay for itself in weeks. It will
put a great deal of extra money in a users pocket. Because
of today’s spiraling gas, oil,
propane, and other energy
costs, the EdenPURE™ will
provide even greater savings
as the time goes by.
Readers who wish can obtain the EdenPURE™ Quartz
Infrared Portable Heater at a
$75 discount if they order in
the next 10 days. Please see
the Special Readers Discount
Coupon on this page. For
those readers ordering after

changes dramatically
With each season.
Spring brings new growth, warm temperatures, big bears
and baby animals walking on unsure legs. Summer finds
hordes of tourists, and even though many animals amble
up to higher ground to avoid contact with the crowds in
the warm season, visitors still see an occasional moose,
wolf and bison herd. Fall’s calming peace is accompanied
by the vibrant colors of the leaves and the rutting moose,
elk, deer and pronghorn and bighorn sheep. Winter ushers
in snowstorms, frost-covered bison, the warmth of the
park’s Old Faithful Snow Lodge and otherworldly glimpses
of geyser basins.
Visit Yellowstone in winter, and you’ll feel as though
you’re seeing the park’s animal and geological wonders for
the first time. I love Yellowstone on any day of the calendar,
but my favorite time of year is the cold season when the
frigid temperatures and deep snow reveal sights like nothing you’ve ever seen during the other seasons.
My husband, Mike Vining, and I recently made our first
winter trip to America’s oldest national park, founded in
1872 in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. When we arrived at
the town of West Yellowstone, Montana, on the western
border of the park, we discovered that we weren’t the only
36 Highways
visitors with winter-travel plans. The community bustled
with skiers, snowshoers and snowmobile enthusiasts.
Despite our differences, we all had something in common:
a thirst for winter adventure.
Shortly after arriving, we bundled up, clipped on crosscountry skis and glided into the park on a trail open only to
skiers and snowshoers. During the 6-mile trek, we came
upon a herd of bison standing belly-deep in snow along the
Madison River. The huge mammals were unfazed by us, so
we stood and watched as they used their big heads as snowplows in their search for shoots and shrubs.

As we skied back into town, the biggest storm
to hit the area in years descended with a
vengeance, but the cold winds didn’t keep us
indoors. After taking off our skis, we strolled
around town, shopped the local bookstore,
savored a scrumptious meal and watched spectacular films at the Yellowstone IMAX theater.
Later, we visited the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery
Center, which provides a large outdoor habitat for
nuisance or orphaned bears and wolves that are
born in captivity and are unable to live in the wild.
On our second day, we prepared for our next
adventure: a snowcoach ride to the Old Faithful Snow
Lodge, the newest of the park’s lodges and cabins.
When our driver came for us and six other passengers at
the Stage Coach Inn, we smiled and happily squeezed inside
the historic coach, which trundled across the snow on
treads. We grinned as we approached the park entrance, but
smiles faded when a park ranger greeted us with news that
the storm was just too nasty to warrant a trip into the park.
Later, after our return to town, the weather calmed a bit
and we caught another snowcoach ride. On the way, we
passed an abandoned snowcoach hanging off the side of the
road. Our driver said she’d never seen anything like it. We
got to the Snow Lodge and found a note, “Winter Storm

Halts Most Travel in Yellowstone,” on the table in our room.
Our first full day near Old Faithful dawned stormy, but after
waiting so many years for the opportunity to explore this winter
landscape, the last thing we were going to do was hunker down.
Instead, we cross-country skied around the Upper Geyser Basin
in a blizzard and thrilled to the wintertime aspects of these geological marvels. Unfortunately, the eruptions of the worldfamous Old Faithful geyser were partially obscured by the steam,
and after spending hours taking photos of bison and other wonders in windy, sub-zero conditions, we headed back. A hot shower followed by a hamburger and bowl of chili warmed us up.
Our second full day at Old Faithful saw partly cloudy skies, and
we returned to Upper Geyser Basin for a much-improved view of
the largest concentration of these hot springs. We gazed in awe at
the array of steaming thermal pools and rime-covered trees and
snags. Old Faithful erupted in all its glory, and the bison and
geothermal features were more amazing than we’d ever seen.
The next day, we got up early for our snowcoach ride back to
West Yellowstone. Without the storm to harry us, we had a much
more leisurely ride home, allowing us time to stop at the halfmile loop boardwalk that takes visitors to Fountain Paint Pot, a
multicolored pit of acidic mud that boils away under intense
geothermal heat. Further along, we watched the almost-constant
Clepsydra Geyser.
After returning to West Yellowstone, we packed up and began
the drive to Gardiner, Montana, located on the northern border
of the park. In the summer, the trip between the two towns is an
easy 54-mile journey, but in the winter, when the road’s closed,
visitors have to journey through Bozeman and Livingston to
make the 174-mile trek.
Wildlife watchers flock to this destination to see elk, deer and
bison roaming nearby. Grizzly and black bears also occasionally
wander near the community. Pronghorn can be seen in the surrounding hills and meadows, and bighorn sheep often graze
within view during the winter.
With a sack lunch and a thermos of hot cocoa, we drove from
Gardiner to Cooke City, Montana, a journey that took us
through the Lamar Valley along the Northeast Entrance Road,
the only road in the park open during winter. We saw herds of
frost-covered bison, huge bull elk and a couple of coyotes squabbling over a carcass. A pack of 16 wolves padded into view on a
ridge across the Lamar River. Later, while driving the road at a
snail’s pace, we passed a lone wolf gawking at us in apparent surprise. Sadly, the encounter was short-lived. In an instant, the
wolf bolted up a nearby slope and stopped every few seconds to
look back at us.
Later in the trip, we headed back east along the Northeast
Entrance Road to Tower Junction. Here, we skied 2.5 miles along
a moderate trail to Tower Falls, a 132-foot waterfall that freezes
solid in winter.
On our last morning in the park, we skied the easy 1.5-mile
Upper Terrace Drive loop at Mammoth Hot Springs, about 10
miles south of Gardiner. We moseyed past the area’s famous limestone terraces, relished the sight of frost-covered trees and stood
in wonderment of Orange Spring Mound, a natural spring whose
hue is the result of bacteria and algae. Sights like this remind me
of why I love Yellowstone, particularly in winter.

HIGHWAYS’ HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE H
OF
Whether you celebrate the holidays within crackling distance
of your fireplace or in a balmy RV campground, you’ll almost
certainly unwrap a gift or two. The following list of gifts for RVers
is meant to make everyone’s holiday season a little warmer.
KINGSTON–18 DECK PLATFORM BY SUNRISE DECKS ($899, plus ship-
ping; www.sunrisedecks.com, 866-225-8873). As we age, many of us
find negotiating the steps in and out of our rig to be increasingly troublesome. Perhaps no present says “I love you” more than a Sunrise
Deck, since these well-designed and portable stairs and platforms protect us from injury by easing our up-and-down burdens. Each Sunrise
Deck grants safer access to everyone, especially people with disabilities, and is quick to assemble.
OREGON 400T GPS UNIT BY GARMIN ($640; www.garmin.com, 800-8001020). RVers can avoid treacherous detours by slipping the Oregon 400t
in their pocket. Equipped with a rugged touch screen and preloaded with
topographical maps of national, state and local parks and forests, this
durable, waterproof unit is indispensable to outdoors addicts who want to
mark their honey holes. It just might get you home safely for the holidays.
ZG HELIOS FLY-FISHING ROD OUTFIT BY ORVIS ($944, www.orvis.com,
888-235-9763). Gift givers who’d like to earn a lifetime’s worth of gratitude from anglers need only to purchase this unsurpassed fly-fishing
combination. The 9-foot, 5-weight, four-piece Helios 905—the lightest fly
rod in the world—is a perfect match to the Battenkill Large Arbor III reel,
loaded with WF5 Trout Wonderline. A Safe Passage rod and reel case
complete this love-you-forever package. Matched against such high-tech
craftsmanship and artistic beauty, trout don’t stand a chance.
SPEED D7 FOLDING BICYCLE BY DAHON ($430; www.dahon.com, 800442-3511). Chances are, you don’t enjoy wrestling with cumbersome
bike racks or worrying about your exposed two-wheeled ride while away
from your rig. The Speed D7 (or any of Dahon’s other folding models)
leaves these concerns in the dust. Owners can easily slip its compact,
folded iteration into a trunk or nearly any storage space, eliminating
the need for a rack. And the stylish bike truly does grow and shrink
in seconds without the need for tools or curse words.
WHITE RIVER PADDLEFISH PONTOON BOAT BY BASS PRO SHOPS
($330; basspro.com, 800-227-7776). If you fish on small bodies of

flatwater, this is your boat. If you float rippling rivers, this is your boat.
If you appreciate features such as an easily reached tackle pocket, a mesh cargo deck and stripping apron and a comfortable seat
and maneuverability in a portable, durable package, this is your boat.
If you fish with a partner, however, you’d better buy two Paddlefishes,
because you definitely will not share this boat.
SDR–SW20 CAMCORDER BY PANASONIC ($400; www.panasonic.com).
The digital age practically demands that revelers preserve their
happy holiday memories electronically. Yet campground dust, clumsy fingers and splashing liquids can quickly render an expensive
camcorder useless. Enter the SW20, a dustproof, shockproof,
holiday-capturing technological marvel that is waterproof down
to 5 feet. Capture holiday memories with the 2.7-inch LCD
screen and a 10x optical zoom.
RV PILLO LEVELER BY FCBW ($145 to $295, www.rvpillo.com,
800-584-9913). Carrying presents is hard enough—who needs the
chore of lugging around cumbersome ramps or blocks for leveling?
The RV Pillo Leveler is a lighter-than-air solution that takes the sweat
and strain out of reaching the level sweet spot. Made of heavy-duty
material, the RV Pillo quickly and safely raises the low side of your
RV up to 8 inches. Simply lay the deflated RV Pillo on the ground and
park your lower-side wheels on it. Inflate the RV Pillo with your 12volt air compressor.
COBB PREMIER COOKING SYSTEM BY ADVANCED OUTDOOR CONCEPTS
($140; www.cobbq.com, 954-427-5202). Sure, you already own a barbecue or three, but this nearly too-good-to-be-true campground marvel
will immediately send other units to the thrift store. The inside of the
stainless-steel unit requires only a handful of coals to heat up its cooking surface, and the outside of the cooker remains cool to the touch. A
range of accessories, including a smoker, griddle, skillet, wok and roasting rack come in handy for all aspiring Emerils.
POWER STEP BY AMP RESEARCH ($1,833, www.amp-research.com,
888-983-2204). As pickup trucks have grown in size, so has the distance between the door and the ground. AMP Research helps drivers
and passengers negotiate that precipitous drop with the Power Step, a
full-length running board that automatically lowers when either door
opens, then retracts under the rocker panel when the doors close. The
weather-tight motor and drive system deploy the 600-pound-rated step
in one smooth operation. It’s a safe bet Santa’s sleigh has one.

History buffs appreciate the fact that RV

Iwana make sure guests get a taste of what the
Mother Road was like during its heyday as a
major U.S. transportation artery.

“When we were RVing, we never met anyone
we didn’t like,” says Terry, reflecting on the couple’s decision to purchase RV Express RV Park
in Marshfield, Missouri. “It was the best customer base you could get, and we just thought
it was going to be great.”
Three years and thousands of customers
later, the Evans know they’ve made the
right decision.
“We’ve only had one grumpy cusONLINE

Terry. “And that’s not too bad.” The

In addition, the park office’s main
hallway features a mural of Route 66 as
it crosses the Missouri countryside.
Painted by 18-year-old artist Elizabeth
Long, the work was overseen by C.H.
“Skip” Curtis, a highly regarded Route
66 historian and author of The Missouri
Route 66 Tour Book.
The couple’s nostalgia for classic travel
is reflected in the guests they welcome
into the campground. “We allow the Tin
Can Tourists [a vintage-RV owners club]
to come through and utilize the facilities,
grab some free coffee and hit the road
again,” says Terry. “We also open our
gates to classic-vehicle enthusiasts, and
sometimes as many as 40 antique cars
will show up. Our overnight guests like
the old cars and talking to the travelers.”
Of course, the Evanses don’t allow
their enthusiasm for the past interfere
with the comfort of their guests. Visitors
get personal escorts to sites, a heated
pool, a self-service RV wash and a free
continental breakfast.
“The breakfast keeps them around,”
says Terry.“They don’t get in their rigs and
leave first thing in the morning. They come up, have
breakfast and visit.”
Guests can restock at the
RV-supply store and satisfy
their appetite at the restaurant. They can also stay
in touch, with phone and
cable-TV hookups, Wi-Fi
connections and fax and
copy service.
You don’t have to visit
RV Express to purchase
some of the park’s Route 66
memorabilia. Many items, including
vintage travel-trailer art prints and cards
and Route 66 travel books, are available
for purchase online at www.rvexpressrv
park.com. RV Express invites owners of
classic RVs to send or e-mail photos of
their vintage rigs to rvexpress@rv
expressrvpark.com for posting on the
park’s website.
You can read what guests have to say
about RV Express on the park’s website
as well as on www.goodsamclub.com.
“Great small park,” writes Sheila Pethoud
of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. “It’s right
off the highway, but there’s no noise
problem.”

Boeshield T-9 Spray
T-9 was developed by the Boeing Company to protect
aircraft components from hostile high-altitude weather.
Now you can use this rust-and-corrosion protectant to
shield your RV’s parts from the elements as you cruise
down roads and highways. T-9 spray penetrates fasteners and fixtures and displaces moisture while halting existing corrosion. The spray loosens rusted parts
and won’t harm paints, plastics, vinyl or rubber.
Good Sam Club member Cynthia Arce of Riverside,
California, applied T-9 and says, “This is far superior to
any other product I’ve used before.”

Fuse-Panel Confusion
We have a Jayco Seneca GS35 on a
Workhorse chassis. Recently, we took it
to Guaranty RV to fix three recalled
items. No paperwork was offered when
we picked up the rig,
just the keys.
The following morning, I noticed that the
dash panel on the
passenger side was
popped out. I attempted to fix it and realized
that two plastic clips
were broken. Lying on
the floor, directly
under the panel, was
the Guaranty workorder form.
I contacted Guaranty and spoke with
a supervisor. He refused to take
responsibility, even when the obvious
was pointed out. I then mailed Guaranty
photos showing the damage.
I called three times to follow up, but
more than a week passed before I
received a call back from Guaranty. They
said they didn’t think the work order I
found should prove that they were
responsible for the damage. In fact the
gentleman I spoke with said he was positive that the fuse panel they’d opened
was on the left side of the driver’s leg.
The only problem with that explanation
is that there are no fuses on that side.
He then said he’d go and check one
of their units to see if that was indeed
the case. I assume that he came to
the conclusion that I was correct,
because he didn’t even have the cour-
tesy to call me back with an admission
of being wrong.
The replacement part cost $85, plus
$15 shipping and postage—not to
mention my elevated blood pressure.
This type of treatment is absolutely
ridiculous. At some point, you’d think
common sense would prevail, and if

that failed, maybe goodwill would save
the day. It’s the principle of the issue
that concerns me, not the money.
Dick Renoud, PACIFIC CITY, OREGON
ACTION LINE: After a petition was
sent to Guaranty Family RV Center,
Action line received the following correspondence from Good Sam Club
member Dick Renoud:
Three cheers for Action Line! Your
letter generated a positive response.
Although Guaranty still believes the
problem is anyone’s fault but theirs,
they’re now willing to reimburse us.
They requested the invoice for our cost
to replace the broken dash panel.
Every so often, you fight a battle of
principle and win. It certainly helped to
have the clout of the Good Sam Club
behind our request.
ALL ABOUT ACTION LINE

Recognize these rolling hills? Tell us the location of the highway pictured above, and you might
be the winner of this month’s $50 prize in the Where’s Good Sam photo contest. To enter, send an e-mail
identifying the photo’s location and state or province to whereisgoodsam@goodsamclub.com and be sure
to include your name and contact information. On January 1, we’ll pick one $50 winner at random from
among the correct entries. Look for the answer and the winner in the March 2009 issue.
Plenty of scenery-loving Good Sam members have
already won this year. Jeri Leu of Georgetown, California,
earned $50 by correctly identifying the lakeshore campsite shown in the September issue’s Where’s Good Sam
photo, reprinted on the right. The truck camper bearing
the Good Sam sticker stands near the shore of the Ice
House Reservoir in California’s Eldorado National Forest.
Good Sam member Ernest A. Giono shot the photo and
earned $50 after we published it in the September issue.
Now it’s your turn. Simply take a digital photo of an RV in
an interesting or scenic location with the Good Sam decal
prominently displayed. E-mail the high-resolution image to
whereisgoodsam@goodsamclub.com and don’t forget to
provide your name and contact information. If your photo’s
selected, you’ll receive a check for $50.
