I www.goodsamclub.com/travel-store, 877-209-6655 LIKE MANY full-time RVers, Jan McNeill and her husband, Chris, hit the road to say good-bye once and for all to the nine-to-five grind. Jan, a retired realtor, planned to pursue genealogy research, and Chris, a semiretired gastroenterologist, had his sights set on playing America’s best golf courses. “We made a great leap of faith,” says Jan. “We promised each other that if either of us didn’t like it in two years, we’d quit.” That was seven years ago. Today, the Good Sam Club members continue to rack up miles on their Country Coach motorhome, and for Jan, RVing is more than a pastime—it’s become a cause. Last year, Jan was tapped to serve on the RV Owners’ Advisory Council, a group that identifies key RV-related consumer issues and advises Good Sam Club management about industry and legislative concerns. THE ROUTE 66 ARTICLE in the May issue of Highways awakened my memories of “the Mother Road.” Back in 1967, when gasoline averaged 34 cents a gallon, I drove my ’59 Plymouth Sport Fury from St. Louis, Missouri, to Los Angeles. During the few camping trips we’ve taken, we’ve noticed that everyone seems to have their own routine for connecting their RV to the campground’s electric, water and sewer hookups. Does the order in which we connect to the utility hookups matter? can be made quickly and easily with the use of quick-connect fittings on the water-pressure regulator, water filter and water hose. These handy fittings can be found at RV-accessory stores and in hardware stores where water hoses are displayed. VICKI: There’s no one correct procedure for connecting to a campground’s utility hookups. The important thing is to develop a routine and an awareness that prevents contamination, avoids electrical shocks and keeps your feet dry. Here’s one that works for us. Before going through the trouble of backing into a campsite and leveling your rig, check the site’s electric, water and sewer connections. Check the electric outlet’s polarity and voltage, the water’s clarity and aroma, and the sewer inlet’s opening to be sure it’s clear of rocks, cans or debris. While you’re there, rinse off the campground’s water hydrant and spray it with a household disinfectant. You never know what the previous occupant or his dog has left on that hydrant. By the time you’ve finished backing and leveling your rig, the disinfectant should have accomplished its purpose. Once your rig is in position and leveled, you can go through your hookup routine. First, plug in the electric cord while your hands and the ground are dry. Turn off the electric outlet’s breaker switch before inserting or removing the RV’s electric plug. This will prevent shocks and avert damage to the plug’s prongs. Next, attach a water-pressure regulator to the campsite’s hydrant to protect both the drinkingwater hose and the RV’s plumbing from sudden surges in campground water pressure. A water filter to remove sediment is next, followed by the drinking-water hose. Run water through the hose to remove the air, then attach the hose to the RV. By the way, all of the water-hose connections JOE: The sewer hookup is last. Once the hose is connected, check to be sure that the sewer hose is properly secured to both the RV and the sewer inlet. Seriously consider wearing disposable polyethylene gloves when handling the sewer hose. They come in boxes of 100, are inexpensive and can be thrown away after use. Some RVers prefer to use disposable latex surgical gloves. Even if you wear gloves, it’s a good idea to wash Some will look upon our hookup routine as bordering on paranoid, while others will say it’s not cautious enough. nline... The gray-water valve may be opened after the sewer hose is connected. The black-water valve, however, should remain closed until you’re ready to dump. This assures a buildup of liquid in the black-water tank. The more liquid in the tank, the better the flushing action will be when the valve is opened. A day or so before dumping the black water, close the gray-water valve. Dumping the holding tanks is pretty straightforward. Black water is dumped, the valve closed, and then the gray water that has been stored up to that point is dumped. The gray water does a good job of rinsing the black water out of the sewer hose. Lifting the RV end of the hose drains the remaining water into the campground’s sewer inlet. JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Contents 020- 20-21_RV insight 5/23/08 1:48 PM Page 21 It’s like bringing your local technician with you. After closing both the gray- and black-water valves, cap the RV’s sewer outlet and store the sewer hose in the sewer-hose compartment. Run the kitchen faucet (using the rig’s water pump) to add a couple gallons of water to the gray-water tank. Use a two-gallon bucket to pour a few gallons of water through the toilet bowl and into the black-water tank. This will prevent any solids from turning into a low-grade cement in the bottom of the tanks. This also is the time to pour in any holdingtank additives. When it’s time to leave the campsite and embark on the next leg of your journey, disconnect in the same order you hooked up: electric first, water next, sewer last. The drinking-water hose and fixtures should be stored in a compartment separate from the sewer hose and its attachments. Both ends of the drinking-water hose can be connected together to keep moisture in and critters out. Some will look upon this routine as bordering on paranoid, while others will say it’s not cautious enough. Whatever routine you develop, be sure it includes doublechecking the sewer-hose connections. In the past, I used a 75-foot 12-gauge extension cord to plug in the motorhome to cool the refrigerator before a trip. Lately, I can find only 50- and l00-foot cords. The 50-foot cord is too short. Would the l00-foot cord work efficiently enough on a Finding the right toad and getting to the bottom of tire blowouts hot day, or will I lose too much power? Rebecca Bilot, IRWIN , PENNSYLVANIA BOB: You can easily locate and purchase a 100foot extension cord that’s rated at 15 amps. Because RV refrigerators typically draw about 325 watts on 120-volt AC power, your extension cord will work fine. Just make sure you don’t attempt to load the cord beyond its rating by turning on too many appliances at the same time. You certainly can’t run the air-conditioner. BOB: Some transmissions aren’t lubricated properly when the vehicle is being towed on all four wheels. That’s why manufacturers recommend against dinghy towing and will deny warranty coverage if damage can be traced to improper towing. A comprehensive list of vehicles that can be towed safely, dinghy style, is available on an annual basis from our sister publication, MotorHome magazine. You can also find the list online by going to www.motorhomemagazine.com. Jeep was recognized as the Best Dinghy Vehicle for 2008 based on its performance and practicality and the variety of vehicles the company offers that are approved for towing on four wheels. I’ve always been under the assumption that any stick-shift vehicle (nonautomatic transmission) is safe to tow with all four tires on the ground. However, in the May 2008 Tech Topics, someone asked you about towing a Honda Element. You said that “the Honda CR-V is the only vehicle in the Honda line that’s currently approved for dinghy towing.” Because Honda makes a variety of five-speed standardtransmission vehicles, but only one of them is approved for towing, it sure blows my theory that any stick-shift vehicle can be towed. Do you have a list of approved vehicles that I can refer to as I search for a vehicle to tow? The April 2008 copy of Highways contained a list of Welcome Mat winners, and the Best Dinghy Vehicle was the Jeep. Should I place the Jeep at the top of my list as I look for a dinghy? Even though we’re in an era where our nation’s “leaders” refuse to ever admit they made an error, I’m hoping that you’ll be more honorable and include a correction about this in the next available issue of Highways. Aside from the manufacturer of the Honda Element saying they can be towed four-on-the-ground, we’ve towed our 2004 Element for a total of about 18,000 miles without any problems whatsoever. It’s probably because we’ve followed the manufacturer’s instructions, published in our owner’s manual. Honda changed its approval for dinghy towing the Element with the 2006 model year. Apparently, there was a drivetrain change, making the car not suitable for dinghy towing. I must have been thinking of new vehicles when commenting on the Element’s towing suitability. While the drivetrains seem similar, Honda must have a compelling reason to take the Element off the towing list, and we always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when offering vehicles that can be towed on all four wheels without drivetrain modifications. Awning Infiltration We have a problem with water getting into our awning while it’s just sitting rolled up. We didn’t realize this was happening, and the awning got moldy and stained. I can understand how that might happen during travel but don’t think this seepage should happen when in storage. Is this normal? Can it be prevented? Will we have to open the awning often to keep drying it out? Our dealer told us to scrub the JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Contents 024- 24-28_Tech topics 5/20/08 5:09 PM Page 27 Larry and Maria Olsen’s El Paso-based awning with bleach, but the manufacturer’s literature said not to use bleach. Do you have any recommendations for getting the stains out? Sheila Sabo, HIGHLAND, MICHIGAN BOB: Many owners experience mois- ture problems with their awnings, especially if the material is made of vinyl. Water can run into the rolled awning during a strong rainstorm, and moisture can even build when subjected to heavy fog. If you know the awning is wet, open it fully so it can dry. Vinyl is more susceptible to stains, as dirt and dust stick to the mildew that forms on the material. You can use bleach to clean vinyl (depending on manufacturer’s recommendations), but it’s important that you mix 1/4 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of dish soap into five gallons of clean water. If you don’t dilute the mixture properly, you can damage the material and the sides of the RV. Don’t use household cleaners. The more expensive acrylic awnings are more clothlike, so the material breathes and is water repellent; mildew isn’t as much of a problem. You still have to unroll the awning to allow it to dry after it gets wet. To keep acrylic clean, hose off the awning when needed (refrain from touching it while it’s wet) and allow it to dry; don’t use a brush. Since 1975 2811 Jackson Ave, Ste K, El Paso, TX 79930 Tire Bubble I have a 2006 Sandpiper fifth-wheel trailer from Forest River that I purchased new in April 2006. During my return from a trip, a fellow driver informed me that I had a tire problem. Upon examination of the tire, I noted a bubble on the inside sidewall about the size of a baseball. I put my spare on and came home without incident. I contacted the dealer where I purchased the trailer to see if they had a distributor in the area to handle a tire adjustment. They told me that because the tire was more than two years old, it wouldn’t be warranted, but they added that I could go online and maybe find a distributor anyway. I’ve used Google and other means to find out who makes Highway Trooper tires, but I haven’t had any luck. I’ve Free magazine! It’s sad, because this tire has less than 10,000 miles on it. If you could help me locate a tire representative for Highway Trooper in the Houston area, I’d really appreciate it. Otis Harr Jr., NEEDVILLE , TEXAS BOB: I have no information on Highway Trooper tires, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. With the influx of Asian tires, it’s hard to keep up with the names and brands currently on the market. Unfortunately, many of these overseas-brand tires are poorly constructed and provide inadequate service, as you found out. I prefer to stick to the major brands, like Goodyear, which specialize in tires designed for trailer service (ST designation). That way, premature failures can be handled expeditiously. 28 Highways I can relate to your bubble story. I was following a friend who was towing a big fifth wheel when I noticed smoke coming from the rear-left tire. I called him on the radio and suggested he stop so we could inspect the tires before continuing our journey. While crawling around under the trailer, inspecting the tires for damage, I noticed the sidewall bulging. Not wanting to stick around, I quickly moved to safer ground. Within a minute, the sidewall expanded and blew out. In this case, the sidewall was determined to have been defective, and an adjustment was made by the tire dealer. At the time, my friend didn’t have the loaded axle weights of his trailer, so I suggested that he find a scale to make sure the tires weren’t overloaded. Toy-Hauler Tire Trouble We have a toy hauler that keeps blowing tires. We’re afraid to go anywhere in it. I’ve heard that if we put good American-made tires on it, we won’t have the problems. Do you have any suggestions for me? Patti Kelosky, SUMMERFIELD, FLORIDA BOB: Patti, as noted in the previous let- ter, buying the best tires that are available is the best insurance for service longevity, but all bets are off if the trailer is overloaded. It’s way too common to find toy haulers overloaded, especially when too many toys are loaded into the garage section of the trailer. You need to weigh the trailer, loaded for a typical trip, before thinking about changing tires. GOT A QUESTION? Q. BioTech Research has been in the air purification business for a long time and your previous air purifier model was the all-time best seller and was super effective. Why is the new EdenPURE™ air purifier so much better? A. Yes, our previous model was an all-time best seller and in our opinion was the best air purifier on the market, which was also the opinion of our customers. But the new EdenPURE ™ is much more advanced. Our previous model used 2 very effective mechanisms to eliminate pollution, which were combinations of activated oxygen and ultraviolet light. The EdenPURE™ utilizes 4 advanced electronic air purification mechanisms. I call it the EdenPURE™ process. The advanced technology in the EdenPURE™ is that used in spacecrafts such as the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. Q. What about those air purifiers that have no fan? A. It has been well documented that an air purifier without a fan cannot possibly remove pollution to any substantial level. Those types mainly remove pollution that is very close to the unit. That’s fine if you’re purifying the air in a broom closet, but not for a wide area. Also, those units have you wiping off a plate to clean off the trapped pollution. But unless those units have ultraviolet light, that plate contains live bacteria and viruses that can be harmful. Q. How does the EdenPURE ™ eliminate pollution without requiring the air to go through the unit, and how does it eliminate pollution on surfaces and fabrics? A. The EdenPURE™ has 4 electronic mechanisms to attack pollution that mimic the way it is done by nature’s thunderstorm. Thunderstorms produce highly activated oxygen which destroys pollution and puts negative ions in the air that also destroy pollution. The air is now ionized fresh and free of the most irritating pollutants, which promotes a healthier environment. Three of the 4 electronic mechanisms in the EdenPURE™ Independent Test Results EdenPURE™ - Never breathe bad air again 100 50 Before EdenPURE™ 80 60 BACTERIA 40 After EdenPURE ™ 20 0 1 2 3 DAYS OF EDENPURE™ OPERATION 4 MEDIAN MOLD AND YEAST COUNT BioTech Research has announced EdenPURE™, the ultimate air purifier. We believe the EdenPURE™ is the best and most advanced air purifier on the market. You have probably heard about the remarkable EdenPURE ™ on television across the nation and as heard on Paul Harvey News nationally. It runs super quiet and requires no filter replacement. Unlike typical air purifiers which have only 1 or 2 mechanisms of reducing pollution, the EdenPURE™ has 4 mechanisms which attack pollution. There are many different types of pollution and many of them, especially the worst, cannot be effectively reduced with the limited mechanisms of old-style air purifiers. The EdenPURE ™ 4-mechanism process destroys more types of pollution. Some of the worst pollution comes from contaminated surfaces and fabrics. This remarkable air purifier not only attacks pollution from the air, but can also safely reduce pollution embedded in walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, furniture, clothing, and on countertops, as well as, other surfaces. It works to sanitize everything in the home. The EdenPURE™ can bring relief from the symptoms associated with sinus, and other respiratory discomfort. When pollutants are removed from the air you should sleep better, and feel better in a cleaner environment. The result is reduced fatigue and improved mental abilities. The air purification technology in the EdenPURE ™ is that used by the federal government to purify air in the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. Old style HEPA type air purifiers only remove dust and some allergens. They do not remove the most harmful pollutants such as bacteria, viruses, mold and yeast. And if you have one of those air purifiers that has no fan, beware. More will be explained on this as you read on. The EdenPURE ™ has a super advanced system of air movement that is so quiet that you would have to put your ear up next to it to know that it’s even running. Everyone was able to take deeper breathes than normal in the apartment. My cats now stay in the room more when someone is smoking. They would not before. My boyfriend’s allergies were unnoticeable when he was inside. I personally like the fresh smell the EdenPURE™ let off. Jenny Klco go out and seek out pollution throughout the room, on surfaces, and in fabrics like guided missiles. The pollution cannot hide. Q. What is the range of pollutants that the EdenPURE™ takes out of the air? A. It removes nearly all airborne and surface organic and inorganic pollutants. Organic pollutants removed by the EdenPURE™ include: fungus, mold, bacteria, tobacco odor, pet odors and most other household odors. It can also kill viruses. The EdenPURE™ removes inorganic pollutants including dust and many other chemical compounds present in the home too numerous to mention here. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that there is 5 times more air pollution in a house than there is in the open air outside the house. Everyday you breathe all these pollutants into your lungs and many go into your body. Q. Does the EdenPURE™ require filter replacement like the old-style HEPA air purifiers? A. No. There is a small 4 inch by 8 inch pre-filter that you simply clean periodically by running water over it. This pre-filter is made of highly durable mesh that will last a lifetime. Q. So then the EdenPURE™ sanitizes everything in the house? A. It works to sanitize the air, walls, floors, ceiling, furniture, carpeting, countertop surfaces, sinks, bathtubs, toilets, and even sanitizes your clothes. Q. How well does the EdenPURE™ work on eliminating odors? A. The EdenPURE ™ will work to eliminate all odors. It eliminates odors from cigarette smoke, urine, mildew, cooking odors, and any other odors in your home. The EdenPURE™ odor elimination is so powerful that it will eliminate the odor of a skunk in minutes. After eliminating the odor from the air, the EdenPURE™ then goes to the source of the odor. It neutralizes embedded urine in carpet, and cigarette smoke that is embedded in carpet, furniture, wallpaper, and clothing. It also destroys mold and yeast. Wendell Day, HEBER SPRINGS, ARKANSAS ACTION LINE: After a petition was sent to All-Rite, we received this update from Wendell Day: Since September Thank you very much for getting All-Rite’s attention about my faulty window. A representative of All-Rite contacted me almost immediately after they received the petition from Action Line. Upon her instructions, I took the rig to my local RV center where the service personnel determined that the window wasn’t constructed correctly. They sent this information back to AllRite, and shortly afterward All-Rite sent me a new window. I had it installed with no problems. 2005, Action Line Electrical Enlightenment has received 3,358 letters from you and recovered $248,015.28 nline... The Good Sam Club’s Action Line has solved thousands of disputes in favor of members. Highways highlights a sampling of these results in each issue. During a trip from Chicago to Tennessee, we had a problem with the electrical system. We took the rig to the Camping World in Bowling Green and were told the transfer switch and inverter were shot. We had Camping World fix them. When we came home, we reviewed our paperwork and found that we’d purchased an extended warranty for the rig from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company at a cost of $4,997. According to the contract, the electrical repair was covered, but when we called Fireman’s, we were told there was nothing they could do because the repair had been completed. We took our unit back to the Bowling Green Camping World, and the service manager’s call to Fireman’s Fund Insurance got the same response. We’re not trying to scam this com- pany by getting something that wasn’t covered. We’re only trying to have the cost of the parts covered by the warranty compensated to us. We just made an honest mistake in not realizing that we had the extended warranty. The cost of repairs and labor totaled $2,181.20. I hope that Fireman’s Fund Insurance appreciates the fact that we live in our vehicle and simply wanted to fix our home as soon as possible. Richard and Donna Weifenbach, PORTLAND, TENNESSEE ACTION LINE: After sending a petition to Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, we received this update from the Weifenbachs: After we contacted Action Line, we received a letter from Fireman’s Fund Insurance stating that our claim had been reopened for possible goodwill consideration. We took our vehicle and the old parts back to Camping World in Bowling Green, and a technician from the insurance company inspected the parts. On April 1, we received a phone call from Firemen’s informing us that the parts replace- At this point, the window’s taped shut so I can continue my travels as a National Park Service volunteer. ment would be covered and a refund of $1,439.45 would be mailed to us. We’re proud to say we’re Good Sam Club members and enjoy every issue of Highways magazine. Wheels in Motion I recently purchased a used motorhome from Jim’s RV Center in Nichols, New York, and was told that everything on the unit was in good shape. During a trip to Florida, we found out JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Highways 31 Contents 031- 31-32_Action line 5/23/08 1:46 PM Page 32 ACTIONline the tires were weathered and cracked. We ended up purchasing six replacement tires. I feel the seller should compensate us for some of the cost of the new tires. We put our lives on the line by traveling such a long distance and thinking everything was in good condition. Tony Besten, JERMYN, PENNSYLVANIA ACTION LINE: After a petition was mailed to Jim’s RV Center, C. Todd Jewell, vice president, sent us this letter: As easy as pumping gas! r Powerful macerator pump r Permanent connection r Nozzle & drip cap keep you clean www.thetford.com Mr. Besten bought his unit with a fullservice prep package that included a full check of all RV components and chassis components. The unit also was run through a New York state inspection procedure here for Mr. Besten’s convenience and then taken to Pennsylvania for that state’s inspection. In both states, the weather checking on the tires was well within acceptable values. We spend an average of $1,500 prepping a used motorhome before a sale. Anything that needs to be repaired or replaced is taken care of. As a matter of fact, we sent an ABS control board worth $850 to Mr. Besten when we discovered his rig needed a new one. The normal- or full-service predelivery inspection is extensive as well. We certainly wouldn’t quibble over tires. I believe Mr. Besten was “sold” the new tires. We’re still waiting for Mr. Besten to make an appointment to have the ABS device installed. We even offered to pay to have it done in his hometown. We aren’t sure what else we should do for Mr. Besten. He said in several conversations on the phone with me that he was extremely pleased with our company. Our company is over 57 years old, and 80 percent of our business is referral. We know the value of word-of-mouth advertising. We don’t want to disappoint a single customer. SETTLEMENTS AT ITS 400TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION John Smith was struggling to keep the British, German and Polish settlers alive at Jamestown, Virginia. To the north, on the Saint Lawrence River west of the Atlantic, Samuel de Champlain of France dropped anchor at a spot that the First Nation inhabitants called “Kebec”—“where the river narrows” in the Algonquin language. The group of fenced buildings Champlain established became walled Québec City, the center of New France, an empire that covered all of Eastern Canada and almost half of the presentday United States. French North America extended from the Gulf of Saint Lawrence west to the Great Lakes and from Hudson Bay south to Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico. By 1759, the capital of New France had become a city of more than 7,000 inhabitants. Its French flavor changed in 1763 when the colony was ceded to the British, who had waged and won a major battle on the Plains of Abraham. It’s now the capital of the province of Québec, Canada, with a French accent and a British parliamentary system. The old part of Québec City still has all the flavor of the four-centuries-old settlement, with hills and narrow, twisting cobbled streets and stonewalled buildings. But it’s far from being a stuffy “museum town.” Instead, it’s a charming, peoplefriendly destination with amenities to please any traveler. French is the predominant language, but many residents also speak English. The region welcomes RV travelers with three Good Sam Parks and other RV campgrounds located within minutes of the city. To make sightseeing even more convenient, some offer bus tours. On our trip last summer, we visited the shrine of Saint Ann de Beaupré, which has a no-hookups campground nearby for pilgrims and visitors. There’s also ample parking at locations such as the Canadian Museum of Civilization, where you can park your RV while you stroll the pedestrian-friendly boulevards. YVES TESSIER Go To: .com User Guide JULY 2008 Highways 37 Contents 036- 36-41 Quebec feature 5/23/08 1:44 PM In addition to world-class shopping and dining, areas in and around Québec City abound with economuseums (economusées) where artisans demonstrate crafts, plus farmers’ markets with seasonal fruits, vegetables, honey and cheeses, wineries and cideries, flea markets and antiques shops, art galleries and small museums. Colorful parks and sidewalk cafés provide places for taking breaks and people-watching. On the Boulevard Sainte-Anne, we stopped at the Albert Gilles Copper Art Museum to see the Life of Christ silver panels and a demonstration of copper repoussé, an ornamental metalworking technique. Outside the city, we drove along picturesque country roads past charming old stone houses, many with Québec’s trademark outdoor staircases to the second floor. 38 Highways Page 38 Outdoor activities are easily accessible, with golf, bicycling, mountain biking, horseback riding, river rafting and water sports among the most popular options. Parklands offer opportunities for hiking and birding. A Saint Lawrence River excursion is an excellent way to get an overview of the city, especially on a narrated cruise, which we particularly enjoyed. The city’s 400th anniversary celebration began on New Year’s Eve and has continued with a series of historical, cultural and sporting events, but the official birthday party is July 3. A high mass will be followed by a salute to Samuel de Champlain, traditional ceremonies and a military parade. A special commemorative show will feature popular Francophone singers and a historical theme, with repeat performances on July 4 and 5. Right after the opening show, a fire sculpture will be ignited on the Plains of Abraham to signal the start of a flame-lit parade. The Québec Summer Festival launches its 2008 edition with a lineup of performances July 3 through 6 at various venues. On the Fourth of July, America’s national holiday, theme activities and a special show will salute the close historic, geographic and cultural ties between the United States and Québec. Clear waters offer an urban escape in the Laurentides Provincial Wildlife Reserve. Below, left to right: Saint-Louis Street, Old Québec City and Montmorency Falls. Against the backdrop of the 272-foot-high waterfall, this show promises to be truly spectacular. The nohookups campground overlooking the falls is a perfect vantage point for watching the dazzling event. Festivent, July 30 through August 3, features more than 80 hot-air balloons on both shores of the Saint Lawrence, launching from opposite sides simultaneously in the morning and evening. Events scheduled for August include the New France Festival, August 5 through 10 in Old Québec, with entertainers, 50 giant marionettes and their costumed entourages from throughout Canada, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, the United States and other nations. Last summer we rented period costumes and joined a parade. For Sands of Time, August 13 to 24, 20 of the best sand sculptors from Canada, the United States and Europe will evoke important moments in Québec’s history. International military bands offer the sounds of drums, bagpipes and trumpets plus dazzling shows and an explosive fireworks finale for the August 14 to 24 Gathering of Nations. Colorful red, white and blue costumes are in order as Acadians celebrate their national day, August 15, with a traditional tintamarre (loud racket). Join the parade and use anything to make noise: pots and pans, musical instruments, drums, horns, whistles and rattles. August 22 features a free public concert with Québec’s own international singing star, Céline Dion, and several other famous artists on the Plains of Abraham. The festivities close on October 19 with a unique event combining the magic and poetry of the circus, concocted by the Cirque du Soleil’s virtuosos and artists from Québec and other lands of the French-speaking world. These are just a sampling of the highlights and events of particular interest to RV visitors. Light shows, concerts and dramatic productions will further showcase Québec City’s diversity and friendly nature. It’s true. We leave a smaller overall footprint on the environment, because— whether full-timing, snowbirding or vacation-and-weekend camping—we’re conservative with our resources. Consider how much energy and water we gobble up while we stay in our houses, condominiums or apartments and compare that to our RVing demands. Our rigs consume significantly less energy for heating and cooling. Space constraints limit the number of electricity-using gadgets we carry. RV toilets flush with minimal water. And, let’s face it, navy showers are an RVer’s way of life! While the fuel consumption of today’s RVs could be better, the 6,000 miles driven each year by the average RVer represents a fraction of the fuel used by C 42 Highways commuters and commercial trucks, not to mention the oceans of fuel sucked up by airplanes. By the same token, our socalled carbon footprints also are smaller. But before you pat yourself on the back or say “I told you so” to the neighbor who accused your RV of being an environmental ogre, keep one thing in mind: we could do a lot more to minimize our environmental footprint as we enjoy our RVing lifestyle. Here, then, are three R’s to remember along with the Reading, Writing and ’Rithmetic you learned in school. REDUCE: Make Your Wallet Greener The best way to reduce our impact on the environment is to consume fewer resources, and that can be done without adversely affecting our RVing enjoyment. In addition to taking shorter trips or staying longer at each camping site, we can save fuel, reduce emissions and fore- stall replacements by keeping our RV systems running efficiently. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure, keep your engine tuned and maintain batteries regularly (see “Battery Care Basics” in the December 2007 issue of Highways, www.goodsamclub.com/highways). It also helps to hold cruising speed to 60 mph. Fuel consumption increases significantly above that. Treading lightly on the gas and brake saves both fuel and tire life, and using the cruise control has been estimated to increase mileage as much as 15 percent. When idling for more than a few minutes, turn off the engine. Don’t forget the free energy doled out by the sun. RV solar-power systems in optimum conditions can produce enough electricity to avoid hooking into the public-power grid. Of course, the choice to go solar is a trade-off between the cost of the system and the anticipated use (see “Reaping the Rays” in the JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Contents 042- 42-44_Green feature 5/23/08 1:42 PM Page 43 It’s Easy Being Green 12 ways to reduce your environmental impact without cramping your style. BY BOB DIFLEY Looking for a way to shrink your environmental footprint? We’ve got a slew of green solutions. And you don’t have to radically change your RV lifestyle. Just alter some habits and become more conscious of the results of your actions. Put your computer in standby or sleep mode when not in use. This equates to turning down a home thermostat by 2 degrees. Use long-lasting compact fluorescent lights that produce the same amount of light with a fourth of the electricity. Better yet, LED lights last up to 15 years, use 10 to 30 percent less electricity than CFLs and are 10 times more efficient than standard incandescent lights, which waste 90 percent of their energy as heat. Become familiar with green certifications, like Green Seal and Forestry Stewardship Council. Products that bear these seals have a low impact on the environment. Eliminate food waste. Did you know that 25 percent of all food produced in the United States is wasted, filling 12 percent of landfills? Use bulk bins for rice, pasta and cereals and avoid products with excess packaging. About 9 percent of every food dollar goes to packaging. Shop farmers’ markets, pick-your-own-fruit orchards and farm stands. Your food will taste • • • • • • February issue of Highways, www.good samclub.com/highways). But even without solar power, electricity consumption can be cut by turning off unnecessary interior lights and dousing patio and exterior decorative illumination when you go back inside your rig. You can also save energy simply by taking into account the position of the sun. In cold weather, park your rig to take advantage of passive solar heating. Choose a site that allows maximum sunshine through the windows. Conversely, when it’s hot, extend the awnings to shield windows as well as the refrigerator from the sun. RVers typically use only a fraction of the water consumed by a land-based family—typically, up to 100 gallons a day for a two-person household. But we can do even better. To monitor the amount of water you use, draw from the RV’s freshwater tank even when hooked up. This helps develop awareness of how you can reduce usage even more. Turn off the faucet when brushing teeth and ensure that water hoses aren’t leaking. Minimize electric or propane use by turning off the water heater at night and relying less on the furnace and air conditioner. Those with laundry facilities in their RVs can wash in cold water. Unplug electrical-component chargers and accessories when not in use. They continuously draw small amounts of power. To maximize battery life, disconnect them from appliances when storing better, and you’ll help cut transportation costs, reduce C02 emissions and support family farmers. Choose sustainably caught wild fish, which have lower levels of heavy metals than farmed fish. Eat less beef. It takes 5 pounds of grain and 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, not to mention the fuel used to transport it. Install an on-demand tankless water heater for your hot-water supply. Choose paper products made from recycled paper. It takes far less energy to make paper from recycled material than from cut timber, and you’ll save trees and wildlife habitat. Golf courses use tons of pesticides and water. Look for one of the 516 U.S. courses (4 percent of the nation’s total) that are certified Audubon sanctuaries and have converted turf grass into wildlife habitat along out-of-play areas. Throw an extra blanket on your bed and turn off the furnace. Your rig will heat up quickly in the morning, and you’ll save on electricity or propane. • • • • • • Get more tips at Bob Difley’s Green RVer seminars at the following events: JULY 6–12 , RV Life on Wheels Conference, Lewis–Clark State College, Lewiston, Idaho, 866-569-4646, www.lifeonwheels.com APRIL 17–20 , The Rally 2009, Expo New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 877-749-7122, www.therally.com. the RV for an extended period. Cut down on the amount of trash you produce. It’s tempting to reduce water usage and avoid having to do dishes when camping by using throwaway cups, plates and plastic cutlery. Unfortunately, these end up in already bulging landfills. Instead, assign each family member his or her own drinking glass for the duration of the trip. Scrape plates into the garbage and wash in a basin; rinse everything at the end to minimize water use. For those who drink bottled water, instead of buying cases of small bottles, which creates tons of plastic waste (plus they’re banned in some cities), purchase reusable gallon jugs and refill them from a water machine. Decrease paper trash by printing nonessential documents on the front and back of computer paper. Take your own dinnerware to RV-park meals and ice-cream socials. Banking and paying bills on the Internet or by phone saves paper as well as mailing costs. Don’t throw foil or plastic in the campfire—they won’t burn but will pollute the atmosphere by giving off toxic fumes. Dispose of extinguished and cold cigarette butts in the household trash rather than on the ground or in the grill. Water pollution can be reduced by using only nontoxic cleaning products. Discarded plastic shopping bags are major eyesores on the landscape, take more than 15 years to degrade and consume millions of barrels of oil every year to produce. Reuse them to line small garbage cans in your RV or to deposit pet waste. Better still, avoid collecting more than you need by carrying your own shopping bag to the grocery store. It’s estimated that Americans discard 180,000 tons of batteries every year. Reduce this waste by switching to rechargeable batteries wherever possible. Rather than throwing unwanted but still usable items in the dumpster, donate them to thrift shops or churches or sell them at campground yard sales. BY DEE REED “There’s a network of horse motels across the country, but only a handful are affiliated with an RV park.” —RICK SHUTT, Owner GOOD SAM RATING 8/9★/7 Blake Ranch RV Park and Horse Motel Kingman, Arizona 800-270-1332 www.blakeranchrv.com 46 Highways fter retiring in 2001, Rick Shutt and wife, Peggy, hit the road in a 40-foot Fleetwood American Eagle motorhome. Despite their carefree new life, Rick, a former Fortune 500 executive, and Peggy, a former sales professional, couldn’t take off their business hats. During their cross-country odysseys, the Shutts found a lot they liked—and didn’t like—about the RVcampground business. So they decided to see if they could apply what they’d learned. In 2003, the couple purchased a 50-acre campground in the desert east of Kingman, Arizona, and went to work to put their business ideas to the test. “When we bought it,” says Rick, “it was basically an overnight park with 58 spaces.” Not anymore. Today, Blake Ranch RV Park offers guests plenty of wide and deep RV sites, stalls to shelter horses overnight and a fencedin yard for off-season RV storage, allowing snowbirds to make the long trek back north A in cheaper-to-operate family vehicles. The Shutts also added a convenience store that sells 800 food items as well as wine and beer. It’s so popular that some local residents shop there, too. Conscious of differences between horse owners and regular RVers, the Shutts keep the horse motel portion of the facility separate from the RV campground. “We don’t really combine the two,” says JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Contents 046-46-47_Park profile0807 5/28/08 12:22 PM Page 47 RVers welcome here: You don’t need a horse trailer to hit the hay at Arizona’s Blake Ranch RV Park and Horse Motel. go it’s still going strong. “We got involved in a lot of equine rescues,” says Rick, “and we’d like to do that here, too.” The Shutts take dogs into consideration, as well. “One of the things we saw as we were traveling the country in our RV was enclosed dog runs,” says Rick. “We loved them, so we put in two 60-foot-long dog runs with benches.” Of course, Blake Ranch doesn’t forget about its two-legged patrons. “Some people come here just because of our shower rooms,” he says. “We have six private shower rooms that are the same as a large bathroom at home.” Each bathroom has a dressing area, a sink, a toilet and a shower. “It’s cleaned after every use,” adds Rick. Almost every U.S. municipality has some type of recycling program. Be proactive. Ask the management of your favorite RV campground to provide bins for mixed recyclables or at least produce a list of local dropoff locations for recyclables. If enough RVers broach the subject, parks and campgrounds will eventually respond. Without convenient bins, it’s tempting to toss recyclables in the garbage. Instead, we need to develop the habit of saving them, perhaps in a basket or collapsible tub placed outside underneath the rig for disposal at the nearest recycling center. At the end of their usable life, one-use and rechargeable batteries should be recycled to recover heavy metals as well as to prevent pollution. Some types of batteries are mandated by state or federal law to be recycled as hazardous waste. The majority of automotive (lead-acid) batteries are recycled by the establishments that sell new ones. However, it’s up to us to recycle smaller batteries. Luckily, a growing number of stores selling batteries accept them for recycling, including wireless-phone dealers, office-supply stores, electronics chains and big-box discounters. Don’t forget to recycle any unwanted electrical appliances and electronics (see “All About e-Cycling” in the March issue of Highways, www.goodsamclub.com/ highways). These, too, contain toxic chemicals as well as recoverable materials. E-mail your Where’s Good Sam photo contest entry (location and the state or province) to whereisgoodsam@goodsamclub.com and be sure to include your name and contact information. On August 1, we’ll pick one $50 winner at random from among the correct entries. Look for the location and the winner in the October issue of Highways. Who knows? You might have visited the above spot during one of your RV adventures. That’s what happened to Gerald Bentley of Davenport, Iowa, who correctly identified the location of the April issue’s Where’s Good Sam photo (right). The Good Sam sticker appeared on the back of a travel trailer entering North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The April photo was taken by John Cramer of Guthrie Center, Iowa, and John earned $50 just for e-mailing us the image. You can put your camera to work as well. Simply take a digital photo of your RV in an interesting or scenic location with your Good Sam decal prominently displayed. E-mail the high-resolution image to whereisgoodsam@ goodsamclub.com and don’t forget to provide your name and contact information. If your photo’s selected for publication, you’ll receive $50. 66 Highways JULY 2008 Go To: .com User Guide Contents 067-HH07 PG 67 WINNEBAGO A 5/20/08 4:36 PM Page 67 Simply brilliant.
