Thanks to all of our sponsors for sticking with us in 2012, and in
particular to our title sponsors Michael and Kathleen Barry of Barry
& Fitzwilliam, importers of Corona, who won an Allianz Business
to Arts Award for their cheerful and encouraging sponsorship of
CFSFF in 2011. These last years have been enormously stressful
to festivals around the country as government funding for the arts
in Ireland dries up, and just when it seemed like it couldn’t get any
worse, there is a whisper that the sponsorship support that alcohol
brands give to both arts festivals and sporting events around Ireland
may be banned by the government within the next two years. If this
goes ahead, it will accelerate the centralization of cultural events
in larger population centres already well under way thanks to the
economic recession and will consequently put huge pressure on
all festivals in rural areas, including our own. This will have an
extremely negative impact on an already under pressure tourism
sector and is surely unnecessary at this time.

STEERING COMMITTEE
Maurice Seezer
Last year we developed Distributed Cinema and became a
streaming festival for the short film competition submitters, all
within the confines of Main Street Schull. This year, we will be
streaming spoken events and Q&A content live from the Village Hall
onto the web. This is an important step for us. Our programme and
our web presence define us, the one as a record of our aspirations,
and the other as our window to the world. The live stream is
happening thanks to Martin Levis, our technical director, Brendan &
Jane Hurley from Digital Forge, who provide the required upload and
download bandwidth free, the Irish Film Board for financial support
specifically regarding Streaming, Granite Consulting for web design
and Iomega Ireland and Canon Ireland, who have both provided
equipment. With such a coherent and strong line-up of guests
appearing at CFSFF2012, and such an active audience of short film
makers and enthusiasts from all over the world attending, it’s a
wonderful opportunity to show that rural communities can develop
their own response to cultural centralization. In fact thanks to
online technology, the electronic arts and crafts can thrive here. By
supporting a festival like ours, where the emphasis is on the art,
craft and technology of filmmaking, friends, supporters, filmmakers
and sponsors alike empower and inspire the next generation of
filmmakers and their audiences.

Over 150 Short Films streaming to wifi and to the
following venues:
The Village Hall, The Courtyard, Courtyard Crafts (Upstairs),
Whyte Books, The Black Sheep, Hackett’s (Upstairs), The New
Haven, Regan’s Bar & Newman’s West (Upstairs).
Welcome to ‘Distributed Cinema’, Schull’s very own intranet network
dedicated to Short Film. There are many different facilities around the
village, from HD plasma screens, to projectors, to the 720HD projector
in the Village Hall. Outside each venue is a sandwich board with the
day’s programme running order outlined.
Pat Connor
Creator of the
Best Of Festival Award
‘Distributed Cinema’ was conceived of by The Corona Fastnet Short
Film Festival Committee and John D’Alton, who coined the term and
hatched a plan with us. We realised at Christmas 2010 that our main
venue for the first two years, The Harbour View Hotel, had been closed
down. (Thanks for the support over the first two years Denny & Sherrie
Cullinane).
We decided to create an intranet network in heart of Schull, a pilot
scheme to connect a number of premises to our own server enabling
streaming of our short films to these premises. The premises would
also enable wifi access, for the duration of the festival, so that attenders
of the festival could stream the submitted short film of their choice on
their laptop, smartphone or iPad. Brendan Hurley, from local internet
provider Digitalforge ran with it, planned and created the network,
voluntarily giving of his time and expertise. 75% funding from West Cork
Development Partnership helped the scheme to get off the ground.
Granite Consulting from Skibbereen helped us to create an intranet copy
of our website that enabled wifi access, but only from within the village.
Martin Levis spent many sleepless nights converting the submissions
to the formats required for the films to be seen in the highest resolution
on every platform. Iomega Ireland contributed hardware, and Schull
Community College, Schull Sailing Centre, Fingal Ferguson from
Gubbeen, Sean Connell, Camille & Kerry Fenn and Mark McCarthy all
provided much needed support at critical times to enable it all to run
smoothly in 2011. Let’s hope 2012 runs as smoothly!
Pat Connor was born in Dublin and
studied art at NCAD. He lived and
worked in New York from 1987-1993.
He now lives in Schull. His work can
be seen in several public collections
including The Arts Council of Ireland,
The Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork,
The National Museum of Ireland and
The AIB Collection, Dublin. Pat has
represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale
and in Japan, New York and Switzerland.

THE PIER
(2011) 89m
Written & Directed by Gerard Hurley
Village Hall / 8pm / Wednesday 23rd May, 2012 / Adm 46
“Among other pictures drawing positive notice was Gerard Hurley’s
beautifully composed, gorgeously acted The Pier. It tells a common story
in Irish literature and film: the returning emigrant confronts what has
changed and what has remained the same. The director plays a man
who, told his father (Karl Johnson) is dying, travels from New York to
Cork to discover the old codger looking a little healthier than expected.
An amusing, touching battle of wills then develops. The picture never
comes close to striking a bum note…a small gem” (Donald Clarke, the
Irish Times film critic).
Come along and see what all the fuss has been about with this locallymade Festival kick-starter.

The following submission entries have not been
given an official viewers classification. The films that
contain obvious adult content, violence or improper
language are in programmes 16 - 24 and have an
over 18 recommendation.
Standard practice recommends that in the absence
of classification, festivals classify their entire
programme as over 18. We thus recommend that
parents use their discretion as we aim to repeat
parts of the programme in various venues throughout.

Pat Collins:
Documentary Maker
Pat Collins is originally from Drimoleague, West Cork and now lives with
his wife and three children in Baltimore. Before making films he was
editor of Film West Magazine and for three years was the programmer of
the Galway Film Fleadh.
Since 1999 he has made over 25 films. His first film Michael Hartnett,
Necklace of Wrens won the Jury Award at the Celtic Film Festival in 2000.
Since then he has directed Talking to the Dead which centred on the Irish
funeral tradition. This was followed by Oiléan Thoraí, which won Best
Irish Documentary at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2003.
Abbas Kiarostami - The Art of Living (co-directed with Fergus Daly) was
picked up for international distribution in 2004 by the French company
MK2. Rebel County used the shooting of Ken Loach’s ‘The Wind That
Shakes the Barley’ to explore the War of Independence in West Cork. He
has directed documentaries on the Irish writer Frank O’ Connor, the poet
Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and the Connemara based writer and cartograper
Tim Robinson.
His film John McGahern: A Private World won ‘Best Irish Documentary’
at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2005. In the same year his
documentary Marooned won the Best Irish Sports Documentary award.
Locally, he has made films on the Copper Mines in Allihes, the
Castlehaven GAA club and a historical documentary on the famine in
Skibbereen.
The feature documentary Gabriel Byrne: Stories from Home was
completed in 2009 and the film essay What We Leave in Our Wake in 2011.
He has just completed his first feature film Silence and is working on a
short film What Remains which is made entirely from archive film from
the Irish National Film Archive.
www.harvestfilms.ie
On March 30th 2006, after a life-time of
dedication to his art, John McGahern, one
of Ireland’s most distinguished writers,
sadly passed away after a long illness.
Since the publication of his first book in
1963, John McGahern was at the cultural
heart of Irish life. He was in the happy
position of being universally praised by the critics and equally loved by
the reading public.
John McGahern: A Private World was filmed in 2004 just prior to the
publication of his memoirs and these memoirs form the backbone
of the documentary. Through intimate interviews, a strong and
compelling sense of the man emerges, offering a rare insight into the
creative process.

What We Leave in Our Wake is a filmic
essay which unfolds as a series of
conversations on Ireland, exploring
themes such as emigration, mythology,
consumerism, socialism, the place of the
church in Irish life, the central role of land
in Irish history and the sense of a civic
society. Combining images of contemporary Ireland with an evocative
blend of archive, What We Leave in Our Wake questions what persists
rather than the temporary fluctuations and trends, and talks to some of
those uniquely placed to comment on how this country has evolved.
Featuring contributions from Joe Lee, Patrick O’ Connor, Leila Doolan,
Iain McGilchrist, Peter McVerry, Declan Kiberd, Desmond Fennell and
Olivia O’ Leary and archive recordings of John McGahern and John
Moriarty among others.

The first of its kind, ‘The Owner’ is a
multilingual online CollabFeature Film. 25
filmmakers (most of whom have never met)
from 5 continents joined forces online to
write, direct, produce and now premiere this
film in their own locations. The Irish CoDirector Mairtín de Barra has been to Schull
before. His debut short film ‘Tart’ won ‘Best
Cinematography’ at CFSFF in 2009. In January
2012 his documentary series “The Club”
premiered on Setanta Sports. Mairtín has just
wrapped his debut feature film ‘Beat Girl’ for
BeActive Media.
This worldwide collaborative project called CollabFeature, was conceived
by two Detroit-based directors, Marty Shea and Ian Bonner. The project
is will break the world record for most directors on a film, surpassing
‘Paris je t’aime’, which currently holds the Guinness World Record of 21.
This is the film’s Irish Premiere, one of 25 premieres happening across 5
continents on the same day.
The film follows a backpack on a journey around the world, intersecting
the lives of dozens of characters along the way. The Owner brings
together a variety of cultures, languages and film styles into a singular
narrative plot. As the story progresses, we learn details about the
mysterious man to whom the bag belongs.
After the film, there will be a Q&A with Mairtín
de Barra chaired by festival patron John
Kelleher. CFSFF 2012 is delighted to welcome
both Mairtín and John back to Schull.

COMMUNITY FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
WITH WEST CORK TELEVISION
Village Hall / 10am - 1.30pm / SATURDAY 26th may, 2012
the Courtyard / 12noon / SATURDAY 26th may, 2012
Filming and editing a simple scene from a short story: “Dusky Ruth” by
A.E. Coppard.
Working with the region’s daily online paper, West Cork Times, West
Cork TV, an internet station, aims to train local groups and individuals
to provide video coverage/archiving for their community and the region
as a whole. This workshop is designed for those who have no training
whatsoever and may be somewhat intimidated by the prospect of a foray
into the media world. We are looking for the young and the old to step
up with whatever equipment they can lay their hands on, and with a few
simple rules and guidelines produce clear stories and reflections from
and for their communities.
Two actors, two chairs and a couple of props. Decisions have to be made.
Where are the chairs? Where are the actors? How do they perform? How
do they move? Where is the camera? Does it move? What size is the frame?
Regarding editing, which shot do we use? How much do we use? What order
do they go in? Remember this is a silent film, no dialogue. This is NOT a
lecture. The audience are encouraged to participate. We will try to edit this
sequence before your very eyes!

MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY

Village Hall / 6pm / SATURDAY 26th may, 2012
A poetic chronicle of artist-activist Jacks
McNamara’s transformative journey from
childhood abuse to psych ward inpatient to
pioneering mental health advocacy. It is an
intimate portrait of her quest to live with
courage and dignity and a powerful critique
of standard psychiatric treatments. Poignant
testimonials connect the fault lines of human
nature to the unstable topography and mercurial weather patterns of the
San Francisco Bay Area, reshaping mental health stigmas through a new
healing culture and political model for living with madness as a tool of
creativity, inspiration and hope. www.crookedbeauty.com
Dr Patrick Bracken is a consultant psychiatrist and Clinical Director
of the Centre for Mental Health Care and Recovery in Bantry General
Hospital. He advocates a ‘recovery’ approach to mental health issues,
encouraging alternative ways of intervening and accepting different ways
of framing such experiences. The recovery approach involves a mind-set
based on an openness to negotiate how we frame, and intervene in,
experiences of madness, distress and dislocation. Such a mind-set can
be encouraged, promoted and supported but it cannot be reduced to
a simple list of dos and don’ts. Importantly, the recovery approach is
linked with moves to acknowledge and understand the links between
states of madness and distress and the dynamics of human creativity.
In the future, recovery-based services will be ones where the creative
arts are not an ‘add-on’ to good mental health work but are instead at
the heart of such work promoting new ways of exploring the nature of
mental illness as well as providing positive ways for individuals to move
on from being ‘stuck’. Pat will introduce and interview director Rob
Harper about his film The Men In White Coats, made by Rob for the NFTS

LENNY ABRAHAMSON,
THE CRAFT OF DIRECTION
Village Hall / 8pm / SATURDAY 26th may, 2012
Multiple-award-winning director Lenny Abrahamson has been a leading
voice in the new wave of contemporary Irish and European cinema. Here
he talks to fellow Irish director Carmel Winters about the much lauded
but little understood craft of the director. This is a rare opportunity to
meet the man behind an extraordinary cinematic vision and to share the
insights he has gained on the journey from first short to latest feature.
Lenny Abrahamson is from Dublin and is a TCD foundation scholar in
Philosophy. After a period of post graduate study in Stanford University,
California, he returned home to concentrate on filmmaking. His short
film 3 Joes won many awards back in the 90s, including best European
short film at the Cork Film Festival. His debut feature Adam & Paul,
written by Mark O’Halloran who also acted one of the two leads, had
enormous success winning best first feature at the 2004 Galway Film
Fleadh, best director at the 2005 IFTAs and the Grand Prix at the 2005
Sofia International Film Festival. His second feature, Garage, again
collaborating with O’Halloran as writer, won the CICAE Art Cinema
Prize in Director’s Fortnight at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Garage
cleaned up at the 2008 IFTAs winning best feature, best director, best
script and best actor. It also took the prize for best feature at the Torino

fact that his neighbours treat him as a harmless
misfit, he is always good natured and absurdly
optimistic. Josie’s world shifts over the course of
a summer when a teenager comes to work with
him, and as a result of one thoughtless action on Josie’s part, events
spiral out of his control changing his life forever.

Forty years ago they told Denis he was

it together on the South West Coast of Ireland.

Rob Harper graduated from Westminster University in 2008 and arrived

explore the deeper psychological undercurrents of everyday life, often
finding that a little humour can go a long way.

What should you shoot your film on? What are the broader
implications of shooting on different cameras, different formats? How
does the camera you choose affect the look of your film, your budget,
your schedule and how you work with actors? Award-winning filmmaker Michael Lavelle will guide participants through the range of
options for shooting today, using his invaluable experience as both
director and cinematographer to demystify the options that are available
to a film-maker.
Michael Lavelle is a screenwriter, director and dop. He began his
collaboration as a dop with director Ken Wardrop in 2004 on “Undressing
My Mother”, which went on to garner over 20 international awards
including a European Academy Award. “Out of the Blue”, his debut short
film as a writer/director picked up numerous international awards
including Best Short Film at the London Independent Film Festival,
the Audience Award at Cork Film Festival and the Grand Prix for
Cinematography at the Rhode Island Film Festival.
“His & Hers” was his first feature film as a Dop. It was screened at
Sundance 2010 where Michael (along with his co-dop Kate
McCullough) scooped the World Cinematography Award for
Documentary. Michael was selected as a finalist for the Berlinale Today
Award 2011 with his short screenplay “Mother’s Little Helper”. Funded by
the Berlinale and produced by Germany’s Macchiato Pictures, the film
was shot on location in Berlin and screened at the Berlinale in 2011. It
went on to win the award at CFSFF 2011 for best Drama as chosen by
director Kirsten Sheridan. We’re delighted to welcome Michael back to
Schull for this talk.

MIKE HANNON: DIY FILMMAKING

GREYHOUND TRACK (2010) 17min
Exhibiting an anthropological style, Greyhound Track appropriates
a personalised version of the methodologies of direct cinema and
ethnography to problematise the camera’s role.
RAT’S ISLAND (2011) 12min
An observational account of how, in the face of personal and economic
adversity, a father has made a home for himself and his son. It
documents his efforts to survive in a social and geographic margin, as
he tries to hold on to his family.
TERMINAL CONVENTION (2011) 30min
Terminal Convention was an ambitious hybrid event that inhabited the
disused terminal of Cork Airport, Ireland, for two weeks in March 2011.
This film considers curated artist’s work, specifically created for the
buildings they were exhibited in, in the light of their surrounds.
All three films were directed by Mike Hannon.
“The style of each film, their meaning and the way they were shot
are very closely linked. Because I made these films by myself, I had
complete control over every aspect of the film making process, from the
initial concept to the final film. Traditionally, filmmaking is characterised
by compartmentalisation of labour. I am an advocate for a do-it-yourself
approach, where everything you do is in service to a personal vision.”
(Mike Hannon, 2012)
Mike Hannon is an independent film maker and video artist whose work
ranges from the experimental to the conventional, spanning a number
of genres. He holds BAs in Fine Art and Applied Psychology. He has won
many awards for his work, including Best Doc and Best in Cork at CFSFF
2011 for Rat’s Island. We were very taken with his DIY aesthetic, how this
actually benefits his approach, particularly regarding Rat’s Island, where
his camera never seems to intrude. Unusually, Mike’s approach benefits
by the fact that he doesn’t need to work with a crew.
MIKE LEIGH INTERVIEWED BY GREG DYKE
Village Hall / 5pm / SunDAY 27th may, 2012
Writer-director Mike Leigh was born in 1943 in Salford. He trained at
the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Camberwell, Central Art Schools
London, and at the London Film School, of which he is now Chairman.
He has directed more than 20 films as well as having made a name
for himself as theatre director, dramatist and screenwriter. His films
have received countless international awards as well as several Oscar
Nominations and awards. In 1971 he made his directorial debut with
Bleak Moments, which went on to win the Golden Leopard at the Locarno
Film Festival. In Cannes he won the Best Director Award in 1993 for
Naked, and the Palme d’Or in 1996 for Secrets and Lies, which in itself
received a total of five Oscar nominations. In 2004, Vera Drake, his highly
regarded study of society whose characters display an extraordinary
depth, was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice.
Another Year is Leigh’s most recent full length movie. It screened in
competition at Cannes in 2010 and it also went on to be nominated for
an Oscar. CFSFF will screen it on Thursday 24th May 2012 in the Village
Hall. His latest film A Running Jump is one of four shorts to be screened
as part of the London 2012 Festival.
After an early career as a journalist, Greg Dyke started his broadcasting
career at LWT in 1977 and by 1991 he was Group Chief Executive.
In January 2000, he was appointed Director General of the BBC. In
November 2004 he became chancellor of University of York, and in
March 2008 he was appointed Chair of the British Film Institute. CFSFF
are delighted to welcome Greg back to his now familiar role as chair of
the final day interview at Schull’s own film festival.

DOWTCHA PUPPETS
12noon, 2pm & 4pm / Sunday 27th May, 2012
“Grandma’s Garden” is a delightful puppet show for younger children
aged from 3 to 6. Seán is staying with his Grandmother for the first time
while his mother is having a baby. He´s sad to be away from his games
and his toys, and worries that he will have to share his parents with a
new brother or sister. Things get worse when he finds out there are no
computer games, DVD´s or even a television in his Grandma’s house.
“Grandma´s Garden” is full of surprises, magical characters, and funny
songs. It encourages play, imagination and an interest in nature, while
also introducing the idea of change, and being really, really good fun!
“Listen Janey Mac” is a charming, fun exploration of the history of Cork
City through puppetry and song, and a mildly cautionary tale reminding
us all how lucky we are to live in the 21st Century. Janey Mac and her
puppy wander into a magical stone circle that takes them back in time.
They meet a boy from a ring fort, help build a monastery and escape a
medieval slum trying to get home. “Listen Janey Mac” is a gentle and
humorous piece with plenty of songs and a taste of adventure suitable
for a younger audience.
Dowtcha Puppets is a Cork based puppetry company established in
2002 by Cliff Dolliver and Mick Lynch, as a trading name of Dolliver
Design Limited. They have produced nine new puppet shows for young
audiences, seven street parades; two commissioned one-off adult
pieces and have developed a programme of puppetry and puppet making
workshops. www.dowtchapuppets.com
