Capernwray has been operating in New Zealand
for nearly 50 years. Initially with its headquarters
in Auckland, the ministry is now based at
Monavale Homestead in Cambridge. We also
have the ‘Adventure Lodge’ down the road on
the shore of Lake Karapiro.
Both of our properties run Bible School courses
for local and international students as well as
functions and events. A key focus of our activity
revolves around the Bible School programme and
we are committed to providing high quality Bible
teaching for our students.
Up to 150 students visit Capernwray New Zealand
each year and complete the six month Bible
School course at Monavale, the six week
Adventure Bible School programme at the
Adventure Lodge, or the ten week Business,
Ministry, and Leadership course at Monavale.
Our aim is to continually speak the Truth of Jesus
Christ into the lives of students and guests in a way
which is appropriate and helpful for their lives and
that glorifies God.

In 1946 Major Ian Thomas purchased Capernwray Hall, a 19th century mansion in 175 acres of
parkland, just south of England’s famous lake district. Although it was initially a Christian holiday
conference centre it soon became a Bible School. This was due to the demand for good, sound
Bible teaching for many new Christians from the holiday conferences.
The movement, now known as Torchbearers International, spread quickly in the ‘50s and ‘60s
around Europe, North america, and the Asia-Pacific. A work began in New Zealand in the late ‘60s
in Howick, Auckland with a mixture of holiday weeks and Bible training schools. This later moved
to Henderson in 1981 and in the 1995 to
the current base at Monavale
Homestead in Cambridge.
There are now twenty five different
Torchbearer (Capernwray) Centres
around the world with thousands of
students going through the courses each
year. We are excited to be a ministry
that God has chosen to establish.
Capernwray hosts many conferences and events throughout the year,
from youth camps to Bible Teaching conferences. We also hire out our
facilities during term break for groups to run their own events,
seminars and business meetings. Below is a list of main conferences
hosted by Capernwray New Zealand:
Summer Soccer Camp
A 3 day soccer camp aimed at 7-14 year olds combining soccer skills
and biblical training.
Breakthrough
A regional youth event held over a weekend at Monavale Homestead
where the campus is transformed into a theme for each event. A blend
of wild, wacky activities and a solid gospel message is the perfect place
to bring youth groups for fun and fellowship.
BaseCamp
A weekend teaching event aimed at young people between 16-20
years old who are dealing with life’s challenges or about to head off to
university.
Men’s Retreat
A men’s bible teaching weekend conference held at the Adventure
Lodge, located on the shore of Lake Karapiro. A time of solid bible
teaching, fellowship and discussion.
Woman to Woman
A conference for all women. This is a wonderful opportunity for ladies
to enjoy a special weekend of teaching and fellowship.
Xposure
A Youth retreat aimed at 14-16 year olds. This is a special time for
those who want to dig deeper into God’s Word and enjoy fellowship
with like-minded teenagers.
Carols by Candlelight
A real highlight of the Christmas season for the local community of
Cambridge. Held at Monavale this is two nights of traditional carols,
singing and fellowship out on the Homestead lawns, followed by a light
supper.

The Bible School programme has been designed to have a balance of
practical ministry and discipleship, as well as the foundational teaching
common to all Capernwray (Torchbearer) centres.
Students can choose from the following distinct options:
20 week course

All courses consist of a combination of Bible teaching, a weekly ministry
programme, a discipleship group programme, community prayer, worship
and devotions, weekly assignments, ministry weeks off campus, Sunday
fellowship nights, ministry assignments, weekly ‘work afternoon’ in and
around the property, daily duties and responsibilities, quiet days and
family fun nights, among many other things.
The ABS programme was developed over 15 years ago to give students the
opportunity to combine sound Bible teaching with physical and outdoor
activities.
6 Week Course
Adventure Lodge, Karapiro
Course Duration: January-March, April-June, or October-November.
ABS consists of a combination of practical Bible Study, lectures, mentoring,
discussion, workshop, and adventure activities. The course is intended to
challenge people at their own level, as fitness, age , and ability are
considered. However, we suggest a reasonable level of physical training be
undertaken in preperation for the course. No prior experience is necessary,
but you should be able to run 3km without stopping, please be aware – this
is no holiday!
Having launched the BML programme in 2010 with day seminars and night school,
we now also offer a 10 week residential course and a one week intensive training
course, designed to train and equip those seeking to study God’s word deeply and
its application to life, work, home and church. Offering a combination of Bible
teaching and business training this course is ideal for those in business, ministry or
leadership.

The BML programme consists of a mixture of lectures, Bible studies, assignments
and practical application to teach a range of subjects including; Authority,
Professional Integrity, Business in the Bible, Leadership, Management, Marketing,
Money and Evangelism in the workplace.
