Leaving for the Summer? - Please Prepare your Unit!

Many WaterGarden residents will be returning up north this summer. It is your responsibility to secure and prepare your unit for your extended absence. Please refer to the checklist below to aid you in what to do before your leave. Turn off water supply valve to your unit (Pictured is the hot water valve which is the smaller of the two valves and the cold water valve which are usually located in the A/C closet. DO NOT turn off water valves to you’re A/C, see Management if you have questions or need assistance) Make sure your smoke detectors and leak detectors have working batteries Set your A/C for 78° or lower to avoid mold. Make arrangements for someone to check your unit occasionally while you are away. There have been reports from homeowners who have left their condo unattended for 6 months and upon their return found that their entire unit, including walls and furniture, were full of mold because their A/C had unexpectedly stop working. If you do not have a neighbor, family or friend who can check in on your unit while you are away make sure to leave a key with the building’s concierge, Jorge Hernandez. Make sure to bring in your patio furniture. Even heavy furniture can easily become a projectile during high wind gusts which frequently occur during the stormy summer months. Forward your Mail and please provide the Management Office with new contact information and mailing address. Service Elevator in High Demand - By Jamie Van Noord If you haven’t yet noticed we are at the peak of the season. This creates the busiest time of year for new purchases and lease termination/renewals. Which means the service elevator and loading dock are in constant demand for move outs and move ins. The last week of March and first two weeks of April already include 12 move ins. That is an incredible amount leaving only one or two days open for deliveries. Management has decided to leave the hour of 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM available for extenuating circumstances that require elevator/loading dock use to compensate. Moving companies often charge by the hour and residents reserve the elevator/ loading dock weeks, sometimes months in advance. Please be considerate and remember to schedule your deliveries early with management. Unscheduled elevator/ loading dock use will more than likely be turned away or could be kept waiting for long lengths of time. Under Construction, Be Informed! - By Jamie Van Noord Did you go on an HGTV binge, wake up this morning and decide that your entire kitchen must go? Even though you might be excited to start the day with a bang, your neighbor with the newborn might not be too happy. Before you pick up that sledgehammer for your demolition DIY, there is a new stipulation in the Architectural Modification application. Upon approval, the Management office now requires one week notice prior to any major construction. Because every neighbor deserves a little “heads-up” notice. Where can you find this information? The mailroom now includes a posting of “Under Construction,” which states units that are undergoing renovations. Remember when we increase the equity of one unit, we really increase the value of the Condominium as a whole. City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Summer Camp 2014 Ask the Expert So I have been asked the diet questions over and over, yet the Paleo diet seems to be the "in" diet. I have gathered some information that will hopefully assist in making your choice to follow it or not. Paleo diets are based on the idea that for optimal health, we should eat what cavemen ate. Sounds a little farfetched when you remember that most cavemen didn’t live beyond 30, but a closer look reveals that some of the diet’s recommendations make a lot of sense, and mirror the advice of most nutritionists and researchers. Main foods allowed on the Paleo - Meat, fish, poultry, (some) fruits, non-starchy veggies, sweet potatoes and squash (in moderation), nuts, seeds, grass-fed butter and coconut. The Paleo Diets emphasize choosing meat from pasture-fed or sustainably-raised animals who were able to engage in natural behaviors in a humane environment before slaughter. Forbidden foods on Paleo - All refined sugars, dairy products like milk, yogurt, regular butter and cheese; cereal grains like barley, wheat, corn, oats and rice; legumes, including all beans, lentils, peas, peanuts and peanut products and soybeans and soy products; starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and yams; salty or cured meats such as deli meats, hot dogs, and salami; pickled foods, many condiments, and really all packaged or processed foods. Would I recommend this diet? - Though I think there are some major upsides to so-called Primal diets, such many as the forbidden foods like deli meats and processed and refined foods, I am not a proponent of restrictive diets of any kind. Here’s why: virtually no one maintains restrictive eating over a long period of time, and it’s healthy eating over the long term that leads to good health and a long life. I’ve never met a single client, nor read about people in research, who has maintained a low-carb (which is what Paleo is, basically) diet for more than a year or two. Plus, I’m a huge fan of some beans, legumes and gluten-free whole grains. When you buy high quality grain products, eat a wide variety of grains, and make healthy meals with beans or other legumes, these foods actually improve your health as opposed to harm it. This has been proven in population studies (e.g. the Greeks & other Mediterranean populations) time and time again. Also, most of you know I'm a survivor of some life threatening illnesses, some of them had links with what I was eating. I was severely sensitive to some foods and never knew until I was specifically tested for food and chemical sensitivities. I learned that not one person is identical to the other (well maybe identical twins...but even they have differences according to their lifestyle), and therefore do not receive the same benefits from foods and restrictive diets. However, I will say this: Nearly all of us would benefit from taking some of the Paleo “themes” and applying them to our lives: Eat more vegetables, fewer carbohydrates (especially refined carbs), less sugar, and buy only sustainably-raised meats, poultry and fish. These parts of The Paleo Diet are consistent with widely accepted nutrition research, and would help all of us achieve better health. More Expert Opinions on the Paleo - In addition, according to Dr. Robert Portman and Dr. John Ivy, sports nutrition experts and authors of the book, Hardwired For Fitness, the Paleo diet fails to take into account the circadian rhythms of the body. It’s about metabolic efficiency, not calories. This is the primary thrust of Portman and Ivy’s nutritional model for health and fitness. Their work focuses on debunking some common myths, like the old cliché about the bottom line of sports nutrition: "just make sure you eat enough calories to replace the ones you’ve burned." The "calories ingested versus calories burned model"—in the spirit of the First Law of Thermodynamics is part and parcel of most diet and nutrition books. Countless books, websites and apps are designed to make counting calories as easy as possible. But not only is this hard to do and hard to stick with, they say it’s not optimal to achieve the objectives athletes commonly wants to achieve with nutrition, such as providing enough energy for training and performance and help rebuild muscle after workouts. If you have ever trained with us, you would have experienced that our focus is not in the calories, but in the quality of foods and how they serve you best. Portman and Ivy recommend a plan more in concert with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, Thermodynamics as in the efficiency of a system. In other words, rather than focusing on diet plan that fills up the tank enough to drive a certain distance, think of nutrition as a way to make your engine run as efficiently as possible. To do this, Portman and Ivy assert, you need to tune your eating to the inherent rhythms of our 24-hour genetic clock. By calibrating your meals to specific macronutrient ratios, you can ride the right metabolic waves to maximize protein synthesis at the right time and unleash high levels of energy at the right time. Try this for a few weeks and keep your sleep cycle and workouts as regimented as your time allows. Breakfast: 60% carbs, 20% protein, 20% fat. Stress hormone levels in the form of cortisol spike in the final hours before you wake up after a night of fasting, and studies show that breakfast is the most satisfying meal of the day. While you’re sleeping, your body uses cortisol to break down muscle protein to provide energy. This is why skipping breakfast is a killer for athletes—your cortisol levels stay high, and muscle protein continues to break down into the mid-morning. A high-carbohydrate breakfast lowers cortisol levels and provides a base of energy for the day. Lunch: 62% carbs, 7% protein, 31% fat. The body’s energy circuits function at their best during this time of day, and your muscles burn carbohydrate at peak efficiency. Post-Workout Snack: 25% carbs, 50% protein, 25% fat. According to Portman and Ivy, the late afternoon is the best time of the day to exercise. A 100-calorie snack, in which half of the calories come from protein and the rest come from equal measures of carbohydrate and fat, ingested within 30 minutes of finishing a workout will promote muscular recovery, they say. Dinner: 25% carbs, 35% protein, 40% fat. When it comes to your metabolism, the early evening offers an optimal rebuilding window. According to Portman and Ivy, rebuilding circuits switch on as activity circuits power down. This ties in to why a late afternoon workout has ancillary benefits: by following the late afternoon workout with a high-protein dinner, an athlete can triple his or her rate of protein synthesis. Bedtime Snack: 20% carbs, 80% protein, 0% fat. Portman and Ivy counsel against waking up and eating in the middle of the night, but a 100-calorie protein drink or small serving of turkey right before bed time can help diminish the amount of protein breakdown that happens during sleep. Do what works for you and gets you the results you desire. Best of success! Come by or call us with any questions you may have. We are here to help! 305-785-5353, info@onsitewellnessgroup.com In health, Frances Haddock and the staff at WaterGarden Gym and Spa Coming this month ...Zumba Sculpt ...stay tuned!
