Wehavehadanenergetic2013andweanticipatethemomentumwillcontinueasweworktooffer
astrongervaluepropositiontoourmembersandthenextgenerationofAfrican-Americancorporate
leaders.InMarch,weheldourWinterGeneralMembershipMeetinginBocaRaton,Florida,where
morethan150membersandguestscametogethertohearabouttheorganization’sprogressand
plansforthefuture.Wealsohadanopportunitytotalkaboutthe“powerofpartnership,”specifically
howcollaborationcanhelpwithbrandbuildinganddrivingbusinessperformance.JustthispastApril,
weheldasuccessful,planningretreatinTucson,Arizona,wherewedevelopedastrategicplanto
chartTheELC’scourseoverthenextthreeyears.
Duringbothofthesemeetings,therewasoneunderliningtheme–thetimetoactisnow. As a
membership,we’vebeenthroughthebrainstormingandplanningphasesandwe’rereadytoputour
recommendationsintomotion.AsIenterthesecondquarterofmylastyearasCouncilchair,this
senseofurgencyhasneverbeenmoreapparent,especiallyinthefaceofwhatwemustaccomplish
toadvancethebusinesscaseforcorporatediversity.AsItakeonmoreresponsibilityaschairman
andCEOofmyorganization,KaiserPermanente,Igainagreaterappreciationeverydayforthevalue
ofELCmembershipandourroleinbuildingandsustainingthenextgenerationofAfrican-American
corporate leaders.
NextmonthwewillgatheragaininWashington,D.C.,forourSummerGeneralMembershipMeeting.
AswithourWinterMeeting,theseconferencesgiveELCleadershipandmemberstheopportunityto
reconnect,reviewourprogress,andshareourplansforthefuture.Thismeetingisuniquebecause
itwillbethefirsttimethatTheELChasheldamembermeetinginournation’scapital.Italso
willbethefirsttimethatwemeetwithsenior-levelofficialsattheWhiteHouse,federalagencies
andMembersofCongresstopromoteTheELC’sagenda.Inaddition,wewillshareourthree-year
strategicplantotakeELCfromgood–togreat.
Recently,IcreatedaCEOAdvisoryCouncil,comprisedofcurrentandformerAfrican-AmericanCEOs.
CouncilmemberswillprovidevaluablecounselandadvicetotheChaironhowTheELCcanworkto
deliveronourstrategicinitiatives–increasingthenumberofAfrican-Americanrepresentationatthe
toplevelsofcorporationsandontheboardsofpublicly-tradedcompanies.
Workingtogether,wecanmake2013anexceptionalyearforTheELC,andIinviteyoutoparticipate
inourmanyactivitiesthroughouttheyear,includingourupcomingSummerMeeting.Your
involvementandsupportiscriticaltooursuccessandprogress.Thankyouforyourcommitment.

celebratedthecompletionofanother
election,specificallycommemorating
thepeacefultransition ofpowerinthe
White House and in Congress. It also
represented an important period as
thenationmovesforwardtoimprove
thequalityoflifeforallcitizensandthe
largerglobalcommunity.

whereattendeeshadanopportunity
towitnesstheswearing-inceremony
of President Obama to his second term
and the Inaugural Parade. The brunch
alsoprovidedanidealnetworking
opportunityforELCmembers,cappinga

and board of directors also shared the

business session.

bringingtogetherpeopleinthefieldsof

andourpersonallivesintheareasof

social media.

Overthepastyear,IhavehadtheopportunitytospeakwithmanyofourmembersatExecutiveLeadership
Council(ELC)events.Theseengagementshaveprovidedmewithimportantinsightsandfeedbackasthe
ELCteamworkstoofferastrongervaluepropositiontoourmembers.Thefourissuesthathavebeentopof
mindinclude:executivedevelopmentandbranding,inclusivegloballeadership,strengtheningourpipeline
ofcorporateleadersandclosingtheachievementgapamongAfrican-Americanstudents.Werecentlyheld
astrategicplanningmeetinginAprilinTucson,Arizona,toaddresstheseveryissues.Wehavedevelopeda
comprehensiveplantomeettheorganization’sshortandlongtermgoalsaswepositionELCforthefuture.
TheneedsofourmembersareELC’slaserfocus,andinthelastyearwehaveputinplacesystemsand
additionalresourcestooffermorevaluetoourmembership.Earlierthisyear,welaunchedournewmember
portaldatabase,whichallowsyoutoupdateyourmemberinformationinrealtimeandaccessthemember
roster. The database will be used to increase member engagement and keep ELC members updated about
executivevisibilityopportunities,includingpositionsandopeningsoncommissions,advisorycouncilsaswell
asnon-profit,privateequityandpubliclytradedcompanyboards.
AsweworktowardsourstrategicgoalsofaddingmoreAfrican-AmericancorporateleaderstotheC-Suite
andpubliclytradedcompanyboards,weareinvestinginexecutivepositioningprogramslikeourCorporate
BoardInitiativeandAnnualCEOSummit.CBIhasafullcalendarofdevelopmentandnetworkingactivities
scheduledtohelpourmembersnavigatetheboardselectionprocessandprepareforboardservicewith
upcomingeventsinJuly,September,andNovember2013.
InOctober,wewillagainhostourCEOSummit,whichwillprovideourmembersandtheirenterpriseCEOs
anopportunitytodiscussinnovativeapproachestoglobalinclusiveleadership.The featured speaker will be
AnneMulcahy,currentboarddirectorforTargetCorporation,WashingtonPostandJohnson&Johnsonand
formerChairmanandCEOofXerox.Specifically,wewilladdresshowtalentmanagementisimpactedby
rapidglobalizationandthetransformationofbusinessmodelsinvirtuallyeveryindustry.
Atthesametimethatweareadvocatingonbehalfofmembers,wealsoaresupportinganumberof
programstobuildthenextgenerationofleaders.Wearehostingthreeleadershipdevelopmentprograms
forAfricanAmericansinthepipeline–TheWomen’sLeadershipForum,LeadershipDevelopmentWeekand
Mid-LevelManagers’Symposium–whichwilloccurbetweenthissummerandearlyfall.Wearecounting
on ELC members to help us make these programs successful, both through sponsorship and mentorship. In
addition,throughoursupportofourCommunityImpactInitiativeinwhichwearepartneringwithINROADS,
LEADandABetterChance,wearehelpingtobolsteracademicachievementamongAfrican-American
studentsandpreparethemforcollegeandcareers.Thissummer,therewillbeanumberofopportunitiesfor
members to engage and mentor these students.
Finally,wecontinuetoholdmembermeetingsthroughouttheyearwhereourmembersparticipatein
networkingandexecutivedevelopmentprogrammingaswellashearabouttheELC’sprogressandour
upcomingplans.Forthefirsttime,ELCwillhostourSummerMeetinginWashington,D.C.,fromJune5–8.
ELCmemberswillhaveanopportunitytoengageandnetworkwithseniorofficialsintheAdministration,
membersofCongressandleadingpublicpolicypartners.Asweworktostrengthenourrelationshipswith
strategicpartnersandthegovernmenttomeettheELC’sgoals,wewantyoutobeinvolved.

Executive Leadership Council Foundation (ELF) board. Laysha brought her brilliance and passion to
motivateandinspireourmembersandthenextgenerationofcorporateleaders.Inconjunctionwith
The ELF board, I plan to continue this work to close the achievement gap and support up and coming
leadersthrougheducationprogramming,scholarships,grants,andleadershipdevelopmenttraining.
TheELF’sprogramsarecriticaltohelpingusbuildarobustpipelineofAfrican-Americancorporate
executives and achieving our strategic goals. For our programs to succeed, we will need the support of
everyELCmember.Sofar,wehavehadagreatstarttoanotherbusyyearwiththesuccessfulexecution
of our Business Case Competition, which is sponsored by the Exxon Mobil Corporation. Just a few days
ago,weawardedmorethan$70,000inscholarshipstothreeimpressiveteamsfromsomeofthenation’s
best business schools, with Duke’s Fuqua School of Business taking first place.
Through our Community Impact Initiative, we have forged partnerships with LEAD, INROADS, and ABC
tohelpclosetheachievementgapforAfrican-Americanmiddleandhighschoolstudents.Through
these programs we are influencing their decisions to go to college and prepare for careers. Our Ann
Fudge,AlvaroMartins,NationalEssayContestandBusinessCaseCompetitionscholarshipprograms
provide vital support for talented students interested in corporate careers. Through these programs,
wewillawardapproximately$150,000inscholarshipseachyear.
InJuly,wewillcelebratethe10thAnniversaryofTheWomen’sLeadershipForum(WLF),whichis
an annual leadership development symposium that convenes senior-level African-American women
executivesandthoughtleaders.Thesymposiumoffersnetworkingopportunitiesandfeatureskeynote
addresses and panel discussions that focus on important topics such as leadership development,
careermanagementandadvancementincorporateAmerica.Duringtheevent,wewillalsorecognize
recipients of the Ann Fudge Scholars program, which is a two-year scholarship open to AfricanAmericanwomenatboththeundergraduateandMBAlevels.
TheprogramsundertheInstituteforLeadershipDevelopment&Research’sumbrella,suchasLeadership
Development Week and the Mid-Level Managers’ Symposium (MLMS), are helping us fill the pipeline
ofbusinessleadersthroughexecutivedevelopment,leadershiptrainingandmentoring.Ourmarquee
program, the Annual Recognition Gala, underwrites most of these programs and scholarships, so it is key
thatourmembercompaniessponsorandsupportthisevent.Thisyear’sthemeis“IgnitingInnovation:
Leadership for the Future,” which speaks to our vision and mission for the organization.
