Spa treatment is a progenitor of medical tourism. According to Medi-Tour, the Polish market is worth approximately PLN 800 million. According to Frost and Sullivan the global market, at the end of 2010, was worth approximately $78.5 billion and by the year 2013 would reach $100 billion dollars according to Grail Research, LLC. The number of medical tourists in Poland was estimated at 250-300 thousand. The term “medical tourist” is arbitrary, because clients can be divided into two groups; those using the strictly medical offer and those using the wellness offer11. Currently Polish medical services are used by patients from Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Russia and Ukraine. Also the Middle East countries display interest in Polish medical services. Popular medical specializations include: dentistry (the centre of dentistry services is the city of Szczecin which boasts about 800 stomatological clinics per over 400 thousand inhabitants), plastic and aesthetic surgery, dermatology, laryngology, infertility treatment, laser sight correction, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, rheumatology, cardio surgery, diagnostics and rehabilitation. Entities interested in the development of medical tourism in Poland are spa resorts (according to the Polish Association of Medical Tourism there are 52 towns with spa facilities) as well as SPA and wellness facilities. 01-07-2014 6 Trade and Investment Promotion Section Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Helsinki Medical tourism in Poland Countries from which the most tourists come for medical treatment to Poland Belgium 5% Canada and USA 4% Others 3% Italy 6% Germany 35% Russia 7% Nordic countries 12% Great Britain 28% Source: Medi-tour.pl 01-07-2014 7 Trade and Investment Promotion Section Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Helsinki Medical tourism in Poland – why travel to Poland for medical treatment Factors which have a direct influence on the development of Polish medical tourism: • High standard of treatment. • Educated doctors. • Specialists with knowledge of foreign languages. • Implementation of new technologies. • Attractive prices of the offered services as compared to medical services in Western Europe. • Easy access to Polish medical services – effective communication (11 airports). • Qualified medical staff – many medical universities. • Many centres, modern hospitals and clinics. • A broad accommodation offer. • Attractive location of Poland on the map of Europe. 01-07-2014 8 Trade and Investment Promotion Section Medical tourism in Poland Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Helsinki Number of public and private hospitals in Poland between 2004 - 2012 700 643 611 600 589 589 546 526 509 517 500 483 400 331 286 300 272 228 200 147 170 153 176 188 100 0 2004 2005 2006 2007 public hospitals 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 private hospitals Source: Investors DOM INWESTYCYJNY 01-07-2014 9 Trade and Investment Promotion Section Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Helsinki Medical tourism in Poland In the future the ageing society may have a decisive influence upon development of Polish medical tourism (in the coming years about 110 million Europeans and about 78 million Americans will retire), we can count on increased interest in investing in nursing homes for seniors. Additionally, the number of tourists can increase thanks to implementation of the EU Directive “Patients without borders” from 2013. Medical tourism is inherently connected with medical centres. The company will soon be listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and assets obtained from shares will be earmarked for investment. Enel-Med will build, among others, a new hospital in Warsaw. The company already has one hospital in Warsaw but it turns out to be too small to provide for the 300 thousand patients,” (a fragment of an interview available at gazetaprawna.pl portal, entitled „Enel-Med, Medicover i Lux Med budują prywatne szpitale” Enel-Med, Medicover and Lux Med are building private hospitals). Seeing the interest of foreign clients new investments are made. Dalimex from Lublin has started building a medicalleisure facility in Lublin. It is an incentive for foreign investors. Moreover, it is worth drawing on the experience of others, the Swedish investor had a great success on the Polish market by founding ABC Medicover (the Medicover Group) in 1994. Undoubtedly, the influx of foreign direct investment to Poland in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries, production of medical equipment and measuring apparatus and medical tourism is due to the influence of education. Academic education ensures a large supply of qualified labour which is a key element of knowledge-based economic development. Poland has different scientific-technological parks (among others the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia, the Toruń Technology Park), Scientific and Development Centres, many universities as well as human potential ready to absorb knowledge and development.
