Some are national parent clubs, others local specialty clubs, and still others are devoted to a broad variety of events from agility to obedience and tracking, from field trials to lure coursing and herding tests and trials. Many clubs meet monthly, others bi-monthly, and yet others more infrequently. All were formed by a diverse group of dog lovers who share the common interest of raising, training, breeding and competing with purebred dogs. These clubs not only further the sport of purebred dogs, but also many strive to promote and protect dogs in their communities, share in educational programs, sponsor training classes and health clinics, and operate a rescue network, as well as responsible breeder locator service. We support reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory laws that govern the ownership of all dogs, regardless of breed or type. Breed-specific legislation hurts responsible dog owners, does not protect communities and distracts from the real issue – responsible dog ownership. AKC knows there are better, more effective alternatives. Support AKC efforts to stop breed-specific legislation. It’s an inevitable question for many dog show spectators. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the artistic whim of the dog’s handler or groomer, but rather a cut dating back centuries that helps the poodle be a better swimmer. The word “poodle” likely originates from the German word pudel, meaning “to splash in the water”. Poodles are excellent swimmers. Their original purpose was as a hunting dog that would retrieve birds in the water. Owners would shear portions of their coat to help facilitate movement in the water, but leave sections of their fur around the top of their head, their ankles, and hips to help them stay warm in cold water. Facts such as these help illuminate what an AKC conformation dog show is all about. The shows highlight the amazing diversity of purebred dogs and the broad variety of tasks they can perform. Group and a St. Bernard is a member of the Working Group). The seven dogs that win group competition then go on to compete for Best in Show. Points are awarded based on the number of dogs the winner of each breed competition defeats and the number of competitors in the show. A Champion (Ch.) title is obtained once a dog obtains a certain number of points (wins) from a required number and type of shows. © AKC/ROBERT YOUNG ave you ever wondered why a poo- duties for which it was bred. Because conformation dog shows ultimately judge the quality of breeding stock, the AKC requires that all dogs competing in these shows be intact (not spayed/neutered). If a dog cannot be bred, it cannot participate in a conformation show. A dog show celebrates and rewards high-quality breeding, while substandard breeding and quality either receive poor marks or are disqualified. A Noble Tradition The exhibition of dogs is a sport with a long, proud heritage. The sport as we know it today has many of its roots in Victorian England, where in the 19th Century, aristocratic English gentlemen would gather together at local public houses and taverns and proudly exhibit their dogs. The first organized dog show as we know them today was held in Newcastleon-Tyne in 1859. According to The Kennel Club (UK), 60 Pointer and Setter breeds were entered in this first show1. The popularity of the sport continued to expand (as did the number of breeds included), and dog shows began in the United States just after the Civil War. In 1877, Queen Victoria entered a Scottish Deerhound at the first Westminster Kennel Club dog show at Gilmore’s Garden (now Madison Square Garden) in New York City. Even as the sport expanded, special care was taken to ensure the quality of the dogs and that proper, safe breeding was main- “Dog shows highlight the amazing diversity of purebred dogs and the broad variety of tasks they can perform.” Understanding Conformation Shows The purpose of conformation shows is simple – to determine how well dogs conform to the established breed standard. In this way, dog shows are not unlike horse shows or other animal stock shows, where there is intense competition among breeders to prove both the quality of an animal and that it possesses the temperament and physical characteristics required to perform the In an all-breed show such as the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship or the Westminster Kennel Club show, the competition begins with the judging of each individual breed. The winners of each breed advance to their group competition. AKC breeds are divided into seven groups (Terrier, Sporting, Hounds, Non-Sporting, Working, Herding, and Toys) based on recognized breed characteristics and the purpose for which they were originally developed (For example, a Beagle is a member of the Hound 1 “History of the Kennel Club”, The Kennel Club. http://www.thekennelclub.co.uk/item/343/ Originally printed in the American Kennel Club state In Session newsletter, Winter-Spring Issue 2012 10 BLOODHOUND- ©ANIMAL PLANET professionals and amateurs regularly compete directly with one another. These exhibitors, regardless of whether they are professional handlers or ownerhandlers, ensure that their dogs are in the best health, of the best quality, and exemplify the best of their breed. Dog show exhibitors are also excellent resources for spectators who are considering purchasing a dog. Most are breed experts and once they are finished showing for the day, are happy to talk about their dog’s breed, temperament, and care requirements. Purebred dogs benefit from dog shows, too. Shows are not only fun, they also provide a level of accountability for competitors to make sure their dogs are properly bred and raised. The competitive aspect encourages the breeding and raising of better dogs and better pets. They are also educational opportunities for competitors and spectators alike to learn about the various AKC-registered breeds and proper dog care. Experts on dog breeding, care, health and genetics abound at dog shows. Conformation dog shows are a fun, family-friendly way to spend time with dogs and interact with fellow dog lovers. The AKC’s Junior Showmanship program reaches out to young people 9-18 years of age. Juniors competitions provide the opportunity for young people to learn about dogs, develop dog handling skills, and learn good sportsmanship. The AKC also conducts a competitive scholarship program for Juniors who have competed in the sport. Each year, approximately 30 college scholarships are awarded. Applicants must provide details about their experience in the sport, work they have done in the community in support of responsible dog ownership, and an essay on the influence that purebred dogs have had on their lives. tained. Major James M. Taylor, the first President of the American Kennel Club, emphasized the need for a standard set of rules. The AKC maintains a strict set of rules governing AKC dog shows to this day. In addition, the breed parent club of each breed recognized by the American Kennel Club maintains a very specific breed standard to ensure the quality of the dogs and preservation of the characteristics that “The competitive aspect encourages the breeding and raising of better dogs and better pets.” enable them to perform the tasks for which they were originally bred. Only a breed parent club can alter a breed standard. Outside the Ring Participation in conformation dog shows requires an extensive amount of work, travel, and an immense depth of expertise in the breed being shown. Dog shows are one of the few events in which It Pays to Support AKC Dog Shows! The American Kennel Club hosted its first dog show in Philadelphia in 1926 in conjunction with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Since that time, the popularity of dogs and dog shows has grown exponentially in the United States. Each year, thousands of AKC conformation dog shows take place in communities in every state. Local clubs and organizations also host thousands of additional AKC obedience, agility, field trial, and other competitions throughout the country. Each of these events generates significant revenue for local businesses including hotels, restaurants, shops, transportation, and event venues, among others. This revenue is in addition to the millions of dollars responsible dog owners spend on their pets at local businesses each year on such items as dog food, grooming, veterinary care and boarding. When considering whether to support a piece of canine legislation, consider the effect it may have on dog competitions and dog ownership among your constituency. Supporting dog shows and responsible dog ownership has a ripple effect that benefits a community’s residents, local businesses, and overall economy. For more information about the economic impact of AKC shows and dog ownership in your state, visit www.akc.org/governmentrelations and click on the “Government Relations Toolbox” link. Dogs have made a positive impact on the lives of millions of Americans. Conformation shows are a fun way to celebrate some of the most exquisite dogs in the world, the dedication of their breeders, and the wonderful purpose and characteristics that make each AKC-registered breed unique. 11 ALPHABETICAL LISTING OF BREEDS –SATURDAY # 2 13 4 3 5 1 9 11 31 3 14 13 1 7 5 1 3 5 1 10 5 17 9 1 3 2 5 2 13 3 15 4 11 2 5 4 1 17 2 8 4 20 11 15 8 3 5 4 1 3 5 6 1 6 10 7 5 14 1 27 7 10 RING BREED AFFENPINSCHERS 9 AFGHAN HOUNDS 5 AKITAS 3 ALASKAN MALAMUTES 3 AMERICAN ESKIMO DOGS 6 AMER HAIRLESS TERRIER 4 AMER STAFF TERRIERS 1 AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOGS 8 AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS 8 AUSTRALIAN TERRIERS 1 BASENJIS 5 BASSET HOUNDS 5 BEAGLES 13” 5 BEAGLES 15” 5 BEARDED COLLIES 2 BEAUCERONS 2 BEDLINGTON TERRIERS 1 BELGIAN MALINOIS 8 BELGIAN SHEEPDOGS 8 BELGIAN TERVUREN 8 BERGER PICARDS 4 BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOGS 3 BICHONS FRISE 6 BLACK & TAN COONHOUNDS 2 BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIERS 3 BLOODHOUNDS 2 BOERBOELS 8 BORDER COLLIES 2 BORDER TERRIERS 1 BORZOIS 2 BOSTON TERRIERS 6 BOUVIER DES FLANDRES 8 BOXERS 3 BRIARDS 8 BRITTANYS 7 BRUSSELS GRIFFONS 9 BULL TERRIERS (COLORED) 1 BULLDOGS 6 BULLMASTIFF SWEEPS 3 BULLMASTIFFS 3 CAIRN TERRIERS 1 CANE CORSI 3 CARDIGAN WELSH CORGIS 7 CAVALIER KING CHAS SPAN 9 CHIHUAHUAS (LONG COAT) 9 CHIHUAHUAS (SMOOTH) 9 CHINESE CRESTEDS 1 CHINESE SHAR-PEI 6 CHINOOKS 3 CHOW CHOWS 6 CIRNECO DELL’ETNAS 8 COLLIES (ROUGH) 8 COLLIES (SMOOTH) 8 COTON DE TULEAR 6 DACHSHUNDS (LONG) 2 DACHSHUNDS (SMOOTH) 2 DACHSHUNDS (WIRE) 2 DALMATIANS 6 DANDIE DINMONT TERRIERS 1 DOBERMAN PINSCHERS 3 DOGUE DE BORDEAUX 3 ENGLISH TOY SPAN BL & PC 9 12 TIME 8:00AM 12:45PM 8:00AM 12:45PM 9:30AM 12:45PM 8:00AM 11:00AM 1:30PM 10:00AM 12:45PM 10:15AM 10:15AM 10:15AM 9:30AM 9:30AM 11:00AM 1:30PM 8:00AM 1:30PM 12:45PM 10:00AM 9:30AM 8:00AM 12:45PM 8:00AM 8:00AM 9:30AM 9:00AM 8:00AM 8:00AM 1:30PM 11:00AM 11:00AM 9:00AM 10:00AM 8:00AM 1:45PM 12:15PM 12:45PM 9:00AM 8:00AM 8:00AM 9:00AM 8:00AM 8:00AM 12:15PM 1:45PM 8:00AM 12:45PM 8:00AM 1:30PM 1:30PM 9:30AM 9:30AM 10:30AM 10:30AM 11:00AM 9:00AM 9:00AM 12:45PM 9:00AM # 6 7 4 3 19 8 9 2 15 5 2 7 1 18 9 3 2 2 9 5 44 10 1 1 12 2 10 1 6 1 4 4 13 3 3 13 2 11 10 1 2 4 14 6 11 6 6 2 10 1 1 32 5 4 22 8 1 8 5 7 2 17 BREED ENGLISH TOY SPAN KC & R FINNISH SPITZ FOX TERRIERS SMOOTH FOX TERRIERS WIRE FRENCH BULLDOGS GERMAN PINSCHERS GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIERS GREAT DANES GREAT PYRENEES GREATER SWISS MTN DOGS GREYHOUNDS HARRIERS HAVANESE IBIZAN HOUNDS ICELANDIC SHEEPDOGS IRISH TERRIERS IRISH WOLFHOUNDS ITALIAN GREYHOUNDS JAPANESE CHIN JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP KEESHONDEN KERRY BLUE TERRIERS LAKELAND TERRIERS LEONBERGERS LHASA APSOS MALTESE MANCHESTER TERR (STD) MASTIFFS MIN AMER SHEPHERD MINIATURE BULL TERRIERS MINIATURE PINSCHERS NEWFOUNDLANDS NORFOLK TERRIERS NORRBOTTENSPETS NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS NORWICH TERRIERS OBED. Agility Agility blends training and athletic ability, creating challenge and excitement for every breed. Dogs demonstrate their ability to negotiate a complex course that includes climbing an Aframe, jumping through hoops, running through tunnels and pausing on command. Competing in agility requires proper training, as it is a game of physical skill, control, patience and, most of all, teamwork between a handler and dog. Obedience Obedience trials promote better canine-human companionship by encouraging basic good behavior in dogs. Obedience competitions test a dog’s ability to perform a prescribed set of exercises. Competing in obedience requires preparation, as it is a game of control, patience and teamwork between a handler and dog. Rally® Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the rally judge. The judge tells the handler to begin, and the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10 - 20, depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Dog Shows (Junior Showmanship) Dog shows celebrate and help preserve the distinctive features of different breeds and provide a forum in which dogs are evaluated for future breeding programs. Handlers enter the show ring with their dogs so judges can evaluate the dogs’ conformation, or how closely their physical structure conforms to their particular breeds’ standards (detailed descriptions of each breed). Junior Showmanship offers children between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age an opportunity to develop their handling skills, learn about good sportsmanship and learn about dogs and dog shows. Juniors are judged on their ability to present, or handle, their dogs as they would in the breed ring. Juniors may also gain recognition in performance and field events such as obedience, agility, earthdog and lure coursing. Field Trials Field trials offer practical demonstrations of a dog’s ability to perform in the field the functions for which it was bred. Field events are open to pointing breeds, retrievers, spaniels, Beagles, Basset Hounds and Dachshunds. Events vary according to breeds’ functions, but in each case, dogs compete against each other for placements and points toward their championships. Hunting Tests Hunting tests evaluate a dog’s hunting abilities on different elements of pointing, retrieving or flushing. The dog’s ability to perform is judged against a standard of perfection established by the AKC regulations. 14 Meet The Breed – Ring 43 Akita Club of Puget Sound Western Washington Australian Shepherd Association Evergreen Basenji Club Basset Hound Club of Greater Seattle NW Bearded Collie Club of Puget Sound Evergreen Belgian Tervuren Club Berger Picard Club of America Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Greater Seattle American Boerboel Club Pacific Northwest Boxer Club Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle Bull Terrier Club of Puget Sound Evergreen Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club Chinook Club of America Pacific Northwest Chow Chow Club Cirneco dell’ Etna Club of America Overlake Collie Club Cascade Dachshund Club Puget Sound Dalmatian Club Puget Sound Doberman Pinscher Club Drever Association of America Cascade English Cocker Spaniel Fanciers National Entlebucher Mountain Dog Association Estrela Mountain Dog Association of America Cascade Field Spaniel Fanciers Pacific NW French Bulldog Club German Shepherd Dog Club of Washington German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Washington Sea Tac German Wirehaired Pointer Club Evergreen Golden Retriever Club Great Dane Club of Western Washington Great Dane Outreach Great Pyrenees Club of Puget Sound Icelandic Sheepdog Association of America Irish Wolfhound Club of Puget Sound Kooikerhondje Club of America Puget Sound Labrador Retriever Club Cascade Lhasa Apso Fanciers Evergreen Maltese Club Old English Sheepdog Club of Greater Seattle Papillon Association of Puget Sound Cascade Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club Standard Poodle Group Pacific Northwest Portuguese Water Dog Club Puget Sound Pug Dog Club Northwest Rhodesian Ridgeback Club Northern Cascade Saluki Fanciers American Sealyham Terrier Club Evergreen State Shetland Sheepdog Club Evergreen Shiba Inu Club West Coast Spinone Italiano Club Western Washington Weimaraner Club West Highland White Terrier Club of Puget Sound Mount Rainier Yorkshire Terrier Club Specific breed times will be posted at the show and on our website – www.seattlekennelclub.org 15 Where did all the dogs go? SPONSORS 17 PA R T N E R S I N P E R F O R M A N C E – R I N G S 4 1 & 4 2 – C O N T I N U E D BOEING K-9 PROGRAM: The Boeing Company ‘s K-9 Program consists of more than eight K-9 teams, one trainer, a kennel master and a team of highly trained explosive Detection Dogs deployed at various sites throughout the enterprise to provide its employees, contractors and visitors a safe work environment. Boeing currently has K-9 units working in the State of Washington, Southern California, Wichita, Kansas, North Charleston, South Carolina, and Chicago, Ill. This program, which grew out of Boeing’s need for enhanced security in the aftermath of 9/11, was established in November 2001. K-9 members of the Explosive Detection Dog program work with Boeing Security to identify and alert on suspicious material and are trained to detect over 17,000 different explosive based chemicals and compounds. Boeing’s explosive detection dogs have been on the job at shareholders meetings, customer product delivery events, on the field and flight lines during flight tests, and at major employee forums held at Boeing facilities. Selecting a K-9 requires that the dog and handler are the right fit for the job. Today’s K-9s are often recruited from rescue shelters or from other service dog training programs. The dogs are tested out to see if being an explosive detection dog is the right skill match. If they pass the test, they go into training and certification. Each K-9 and handler are certified together as a team once a year. The dogs become part of the handler’s family, as the handler is responsible for his or her dog 24 hours a day. Typically, these dogs, often Labradors, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and even mixed breads, have tenure of six to eight years in the program. When they retire from active duty the dogs often remain part of their handler’s family. In addition to their work keeping people, products and property safe, Boeing’s K-9 teams actively participate in the community as goodwill ambassadors. This exciting and inclusive detection-style activity is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed, size, or physical ability and handlers of all ages and abilities. K9 Nose Work has been featured in the August 2009 issue of The Whole Dog Journal, the June 2010 issue of Bark Magazine, the November/ December 2010 issue of The APDT Chronicle – the Seattle Kennel Club website http:// www.seattlekennelclub.org/ i-get-it-andit-all-makesscents/ The Seattle Times http://o.seattletimes.nwsource.com/ html/local news/2012881334_nosework13m. html - as well as having been presented at national professional dog training conferences. The sport of K9 Nose Work was first developed in 2008 by a retired police K9 trainer and two of his cohorts. Some of the many benefits include deepening the owner/dog relationship while expending the dogs’ excess energy, and putting their minds to work in a sport that can be taught and practiced indoors with minimal needs for equipment (recycled cardboard boxes) and space. Dogs leave class happy and tired while their owners leave amazed at what the dogs can do. K9 Nose Work provides an energetic and focused outlet for any dog. The sport also brings special benefits for dogs with issues such as lack of confidence or focus, overly reactive around other dogs and/or people, dogs convalescing from medical issues, generalized social or situational anxiety preventing them from joining a typical group training class, hearing or sight impairments, and retired conformation, competition, service, or working dogs in need of a ‘job’ to keep them busy and happy. K9 Nose Work has been shown to improve dogs’ performance in other dog sports. In September 2009 Miriam Rose first brought K9 Nose work to Washington State. As Washington’s first Certified Nose Work Instructor (and a professional K9 detection trainer/ handler), she offers weekly classes at numerous conveniently located regional training centers in Western Washington. Four levels of classes keep owners and dogs progressing at each team’s individual pace. Exciting Northwest and national competitions have already been held and more are in the planning stages. Cassi Anderson E-mail: discdoggin@gmail.com http://www.discdoggin.com/ R2AGILITY, INTRODUCTION TO AGILITY: Agility is the ultimate game for you and your dog. It is also one of the most exciting canine sports for spectators. In agility, a dog demonstrates its agile nature and versatility by following cues from the handler through a timed obstacle course. The course has jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and other obstacles. Agility strengthens the bond between dogs and handlers, it is extremely fun, and it provides vigorous exercise for both! SEATTLE POLICE DEPARTMENT CANINE UNIT: For the past 43 years, highly trained Seattle Police canines have been patrolling the streets of your city on a nightly basis. Our Generalist Patrol Dogs have located thousands of criminals that would have otherwise gotten away. Our Narcotics Detection Dog teams have helped take millions of dollars’ worth of drugs of the streets and have seized millions of dollars in illegally obtained property. Since being provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, our Explosives Detection Dogs have instilled peace of mind and helped make the region safer. All of our current patrol canines have been purchased by private donations through the Seattle Police Foundation. When our dogs reach retirement age they live out the rest of their lives with their officer-handlers. As K9 senior citizens, most require veterinary care for injuries or wear-and tear received while serving your community. Since the Seattle Police Department no longer pays for that care, members of the Canine Unit formed a non-profit corporation to collect monies to pay for these medical costs. Since 2001, the Retired Seattle Police Canine Fund has paid more than $25,000 in veterinary costs. If you would like to donate to the R.S.P.C.F., you can mail your taxdeductible check to: RSPCF P.O. How to Approach a Dog Remember these steps when meeting and greeting a dog: Always walk slowly and quietly to the dog’s owner to ask if you can pet the dog. If the owner says “yes,” curl your hand into a closed fist with the back of your hand facing upward. Extend your hand slowly to the dog. Allow the dog to sniff the back of your hand. We recognize people on sight; dogs recognize people by scent. Dogs sniff people to learn their scent. After the dog has sniffed your hand and has become familiar with you, pet it gently under the chin or on the chest. Respect a dog’s space. Do not stick your face into a dogs face or poke or prod at a dog with your hands this may make a dog feel afraid. 20 Isabelle Francais for AKC Be your dog’s best friend and a good neighbor!
