Location: Salon A&B
Facilitators: John Graves and Jan Williams, AXA Advisors, LLC
Sponsor: Toyota Motor Sales
Objectives: This presentation is designed to provide minority owners with a greater awareness of the need for Business Succession
planning especially in an industry that often requires designated successors to be qualified operators. We will place special emphasis
on the criticality and interdependence of properly structured succession plans to the overall execution of Estate Plans that call for
wealth to be transferred to successive generations.
More importantly however, we will highlight how multiple undercapitalized dealers can employ these planning strategies as catalyst
to expanding their ownership interest in additional dealerships, thereby creating even greater wealth building opportunities.
In the process, we will also address how these vehicles can be structured to generate sufficient liquidity to fund their eventual
“exit planning” needs.

Four models. One unwavering philosophy.

2008 NAMAD CONFERENCE
Letter from the Chairman
Dear NAMAD Members, Friends and Supporters:
Thank you for taking the time, effort and energy away
from your businesses and for some of you, your families to attend the 2008 Annual Membership Meeting at
the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. As your Chairman, I
want each of you to know that this Association has been
working hard to continue the fight for parity and inclusion for all ethnic minority dealers through these tough
times that the automobile industry is facing. This past
year, President Damon Lester and I have had discussions
with the manufacturers regarding many of the concerns raised by our members
regarding opportunities that are available through not only open points but through
acquisitions as well.
As a result of our discussions, I have made the commitment of transparency in our
dialogue and so have the manufacturers. This year, I’ve requested each manufacturer to tell us about the challenges they face as it relates to increasing their minority dealer network, as well as reaffirming their commitment to diversity. It is my
hope that we can gain a better understanding and come up with mutual solutions
on how we can not only save as many minority dealers as we can but also come up
with win/win solutions on how.
Our conference theme which states: “Unity and Thought”, is a statement that not
only represents this organizations 28 year old mission, but also represents the importance of working together to achieve the same goal of parity and fair representation.
Enjoy yourself, make sure that you attend our workshops and listen to our
dynamic speakers.
Sincerely,
Desmond Roberts
Chairman

2008 NAMAD CONFERENCE
Letter from the President
Dear NAMAD Members, Supporters and Friends:
Welcome to the National Association of Minority
Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) 2008 Annual
Membership Meeting, here at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey
Pines in sunny San Diego, California. This year’s
conference is themed: “A Celebration of Unity and
Thought”. You may be asking yourself, what does that
mean? Well, these are three words that describe this
organizations 28 year history and focuses more on this
organizations ability to evoke change by collaboration
and unification, as we celebrate our founders who formed this association to be the
umbrella and voice of all ethnic minority dealers.
Moreover, it is my wish that you will take advantage of the tremendous
networking opportunities that this exciting and engaging Annual Membership
Meeting will afford you, as you will have the opportunity to learn best practices on
increasing profitability as well as increasing your knowledge in succession planning
and acquiring existing dealerships.
As always, our evening events will be full of good food, great drinks, in a relaxed
atmosphere that will allow you to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.
I appreciate the support that our sponsors and vendors have shown us this year;
and I am especially appreciative of the support that NAMAD members have shown
us as well.
Enjoy yourself in sunny San Diego.
Sincerely,
Damon Lester
President

Immediately prior to joining the Treasury Department, she

HACR’s mission is to ensure the inclusion of Hispanics in corporate America in four areas: employment, procurement, philanthropy and governance.
Prior to joining HACR, Ms. Cabral served as Deputy Staff
Director for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. The
Committee’s jurisdiction ranges from oversight of the Department
of Justice and our nation’s criminal and drug enforcement laws to
approving federal judicial nominations, and it includes review of
immigration, antitrust, patents and trademark, and technologyrelated legislation. In addition, she simultaneously served as
Executive Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Republican Conference Task Force on Hispanic Affairs. Ms. Cabral managed this
task force of 25 Senators dedicated to ensuring that the concerns
and needs of the Hispanic community are addressed by Congress
through legislation.
Ms. Cabral majored in Political Science at the University of
California, Davis, and earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at
Harvard University.
MISSION OF US TREASURY DEPARTMENT
Serve the American people and strengthen national security by managing the U.S. Government’s finances effectively, promoting economic growth and stability,
and ensuring the safety, soundness, and security of the U.S. and international financial systems.
The Department of the Treasury’s mission highlights its role as the steward of U.S. economic and financial systems, and as an influential participant
in the global economy.
The Treasury Department is the executive agency responsible for promoting economic prosperity and ensuring the financial security of the United States.
The Department is responsible for a wide range of activities such as advising the President on economic and financial issues, encouraging sustainable economic
growth, and fostering improved governance in financial institutions. The Department of the Treasury operates and maintains systems that are critical to the
nation’s financial infrastructure, such as the production of coin and currency, the disbursement of payments to the American public, revenue collection, and the
borrowing of funds necessary to run the federal government. The Department works with other federal agencies, foreign governments, and international financial
institutions to encourage global economic growth, raise standards of living, and to the extent possible, predict and prevent economic and financial crises.
The Treasury Department also performs a critical and far-reaching role in enhancing national security by implementing economic sanctions against foreign
threats to the U.S., identifying and targeting the financial support networks of national security threats, and improving the safeguards of our financial systems.

NAMAD Founder- and former owner of Mel Farr Auto Group was ranked the number 1 African
American owned business in the United States in 1999 & 2000, and was the 33rd largest Dealer
Group in the United States. He was listed for 22 consecutive years in the Top 100 Black Owned
Businesses; Black Enterprise Auto Dealer of the year in 1992, and was the youngest honoree when
the list was first published in 1978.
Best known perhaps; for his brilliant athletic achievements as the All-American and All-Pro
running back in the NFL with the Detroit Lions. Mel Farr was also widely recognized for his
successes in and out of the automobile industry as he also owned a 7-Up Bottling Plant in Michigan.
Currently, Mel resides in Southfield, Michigan and owns DreamLife Financial Services. Inc.
William “Bill” Shack
NAMAD Founder- and former owner of Shack-Findlay Honda in Henderson, Nevada, is considered one of the most politically active and business savvy automobile dealers in the country. For over
30 years, he has lead in the formation of the Ford-Lincoln Mercury Minority Dealers Association,
as he purchased his first dealership in 1976 and later co owned one of the nation’s largest minorityowned auto dealership groups with dealerships throughout California, Arizona, and Colorado. Bill
leadership and successes in and out of the automobile industry has awarded him to be appointed as
a Trustee for Clark Atlanta University in which he is able to support the university while assisting
young African American men and women in reaching their academic and professional goals. Bill
was also awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree at Clark Atlanta University.
Perhaps most noted for his statements before the US Senate Judiciary Committee regarding
mandatory arbitration clauses in automobile sales and services agreements. Bill’s political presence
and business acumen have truly made its mark on the entire automobile industry.
Bill currently resides in Henderson, Nevada.
Nathan Conyers
NAMAD Founder- and former owner of Jaguar of Novi, in Novi, Michigan is considered the “elder
statesman” of African American dealers nationally. For 38 years, he has been the “visionary”, an
individual who helped raise the consciousness of automobile manufacturers and helped them recognize the importance of minority consumers in the automobile market. And the value of minority
businessmen in the automotive industry.
When the history of the retail car business is written, Nate Conyers will be one who will leave a
legacy of commitment and dedication for “equity and parity” for ethnic minorities. He is a true
pioneer who has opened doors that had previously been closed to minorities. He helped pave the
way not only as one of the founders of NAMAD but also as a counselor for those dealers and aspiring dealers who have come after him. His “footprints” mark our era as one of those key moments in
history when minorities made historic advances in the retail automobile industry.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. Its mission is to develop a culturally diverse
dealer network that represents Chrysler’s customer base and the
communities that its dealers serve. Over the years, it has helped fuel
tremendous growth in the number of minority owned or operated
dealerships, including an 8% increase in 2007. Today, those dealerships
bring in $7 billion in annual
sales and employ more than
5,000 people, many of whom
are from local high schools and
colleges. We’re not interested
in diversity because it makes for
good PR. We’re interested because it’s the right thing to do. If it’s your
dream to own a Chrysler dealership and you’re a minority general
manager or a minority dealer, please visit us at minoritydealers.com
for more information.

Think About It
Can you look
baCk while
always looking
foRwaRd?
It’s been said before… the past reminds us
of who we are. And even though we’re the
world’s sixth largest automaker, we were once
a small Korean company making its debut in
North America back in 1986.
We are no strangers to overcoming
perceptions. To being the minority. It’s
embedded in our DNA.
Maybe that’s why we are so proud of being
named the automotive company with the
highest percent of minority-owned dealerships
in the country for the last two years.
In the end, it’s all about changing while
keeping our identity.
