More importantly however, we will highlight how multiple undercapitalized dealers can employ these planning strategies as catalyst to expanding their ownership interest in additional dealerships, thereby creating even greater wealth building opportunities. As your Chairman, I want each of you to know that this Association has been working hard to continue the fight for parity and inclusion for all ethnic minority dealers through these tough times that the automobile industry is facing. This past year, President Damon Lester and I have had discussions with the manufacturers regarding many of the concerns raised by our members regarding opportunities that are available through not only open points but through acquisitions as well. As a result of our discussions, I have made the commitment of transparency in our dialogue and so have the manufacturers. This year, I’ve requested each manufacturer to tell us about the challenges they face as it relates to increasing their minority dealer network, as well as reaffirming their commitment to diversity. It is my hope that we can gain a better understanding and come up with mutual solutions on how we can not only save as many minority dealers as we can but also come up with win/win solutions on how. Our conference theme which states: “Unity and Thought”, is a statement that not only represents this organizations 28 year old mission, but also represents the importance of working together to achieve the same goal of parity and fair representation. Enjoy yourself, make sure that you attend our workshops and listen to our dynamic speakers. Sincerely, Desmond Roberts Chairman 10 2008 NAMAD CONFERENCE Letter from the President Dear NAMAD Members, Supporters and Friends: Welcome to the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) 2008 Annual Membership Meeting, here at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines in sunny San Diego, California. This year’s conference is themed: “A Celebration of Unity and Thought”. You may be asking yourself, what does that mean? Well, these are three words that describe this organizations 28 year history and focuses more on this organizations ability to evoke change by collaboration and unification, as we celebrate our founders who formed this association to be the umbrella and voice of all ethnic minority dealers. Moreover, it is my wish that you will take advantage of the tremendous networking opportunities that this exciting and engaging Annual Membership Meeting will afford you, as you will have the opportunity to learn best practices on increasing profitability as well as increasing your knowledge in succession planning and acquiring existing dealerships. As always, our evening events will be full of good food, great drinks, in a relaxed atmosphere that will allow you to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I appreciate the support that our sponsors and vendors have shown us this year; and I am especially appreciative of the support that NAMAD members have shown us as well. Enjoy yourself in sunny San Diego. IN 1983, BACK BEFORE WE CREATED THE “DIVERSITY” WAS A CORPORATE BUZZWORD, C HRYSLER N ETWORK D IVERSITY AND D EALER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. Its mission is to develop a culturally diverse dealer network that represents Chrysler’s customer base and the communities that its dealers serve. Over the years, it has helped fuel tremendous growth in the number of minority owned or operated dealerships, including an 8% increase in 2007. Today, those dealerships bring in $7 billion in annual sales and employ more than 5,000 people, many of whom are from local high schools and colleges. We’re not interested in diversity because it makes for good PR. We’re interested because it’s the right thing to do. If it’s your dream to own a Chrysler dealership and you’re a minority general manager or a minority dealer, please visit us at minoritydealers.com for more information.
