Streetsboro City Schools The Rocket Review Superintendent - Michael Daulbaugh January 2016 Greetings to the students, staff and community members of Streetsboro! It is hard to believe we have completed an entire semester of school and are well into the second semester. Many great things have occurred throughout the district this year and I believe this year will be one of the most positive and productive years in the history of our school district. Student achievement is up, our athletic teams continue to perform at a competitive level and our building project is moving forward at light speed! This past summer, we broke ground on the first phase of our building project. At this time, the new additions to Streetsboro Elementary School are well under way and under roof. The roof is also finished on the new additions, windows have been installed, mechanical equipment is in place, walls are painted and the ceilings are being installed. In the coming weeks, all of the cabinetry work will be installed in the new classrooms and office area and the glass will be installed in the new grand entrance. The project is on schedule and when school concludes for the year, the remainder of the existing building will begin to receive heavy renovations. Currently we are on pace to open an entirely new building in January of 2017. Please take time to visit our website to see updated pictures of both the new elementary and high school! (https://sites.google.com/a/ streetsboroschools.com/ofcc-building-project/). At the new high school on State Route 14, construction has progressed on time and at a lightening pace. The entire building is now under roof and many of the areas in the building are taking shape. All of the classrooms and instructional areas are roughed-in and huge windows throughout the entire building bring significant amounts of natural light into the entire building. Because of all of the nice winter weather, we have been able to install the spray foam insulation on most of the classroom wing and many of the cement floors have been installed as well. It is truly an amazing building and I would encourage people to drive by the sight and see how magnificent the building is beginning to look. Also, check out updated pictures on the construction website (https:// sites.google.com/a/streetsboroschools.com/ofcc-building-project/). One of the most anticipated features of the new high school will be the 800 seat auditorium. This structure will be one of the many “show cases” of our new high school and the students cannot wait to perform in this new venue. I have included below two renderings of what the new auditorium will look like when completed. Please note the details in the photos mimic what you see when entering the auditorium. The colors on the walls, the wood wrapped proscenium, the lighted walkways, plush seats and carpeted walk ways look are replicas of the new space. We are very excited to see the finished product! Right now is a great time to be a member of the Streetsboro School Community. We have so many positives happing and enjoy the support of proactive and positive board of education and community. Without the positive support of our community, we would not be enjoying all of our successes. I would like to extend a huge “thanks” to our students, staff and community for working together to make the Streetsboro City School District a great place to learn and grow. Go Rockets! Curriculum Department - Aireane Curtis What a busy first half of the year we have had at school. Our STEM classes have had an exciting time learning about and using the 3D printer. Also, we added a digital electronics class taught by Mr. Kyle Teague. Most recently, our STEM classes purchased a 3D scanner with the help from the Education Foundation that will get lots of use second semester. Mr. Fesemyer, Mr. Teague and four of our high school students traveled to Columbus in November for the Student Achievement Fair at the Ohio School Boards Conference. They represented the district well showcasing what they are doing in STEM. On the topic of assessments, teachers have been reviewing the new online testing resources to prepare our students for the testing which will take place in the spring. Third graders had their first attempt at the reading test in December and students in grades 3-HS will test in April. This testing is being done all online this year with the use of our chrome books. All third and fifth graders took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and Cognitive Abilities tests in November. These assessments help our teachers guide their instruction to best meet the needs of all learners. Technology Department - Steve Cain Currently we have 859 Chrome devices (mostly Chromebooks) in the District. Most of these are on mobile carts each containing a complete classroom set (30) that can be moved to any classroom that needs them. The District wireless network that we installed a few years ago makes these devices capable of connecting to the Internet and allowing students to connect to their GoogleDocs account. The adoption of GoogleDocs a few years ago makes it possible for students to access classroom materials and their personal files from anywhere that has Internet access and from virtually any device In addition to the Chromebooks we have a little over 300 iPads for student use. The majority of these are in the primary grades in order to introduce students to technology but not overwhelm them with usernames and passwords that have to be remembered. Also we have multiple computer labs and specialized classrooms (STEM, Desktop publishing, TV studio etc…) that give our students a wide range of technology to work with. One of our newest additions is the 3D printer in the STEM lab. When all of this technology is summed up the ratio of students to technology devices is approximately 1.5:1 and we are narrowing the gap. Transportation Department - Beth Kinder Food Service Department - Darlene Wheeler Athletic Department - Randy Tevepaugh The Fall sport season proved to be one of the most successful seasons in the past several years. Our girls’ volleyball team had an outstanding year posting a 16-5 record and finishing in 2nd place in the PTC Metro Division. Senior, Alyssa Miraglia was selected first team All-PTC, and was ranked #1 in digs in the State of Ohio by MaxPrep. The football team also had a fine season with a 7-3 record and also finishing in 2nd place in the PTC Metro Division. The girls’ soccer team won their first playoff game in school history by defeating Beachwood High School 1-0 in the Sectional playoff game.. While our students achieved a great deal of success in athletics, they were just as impressive in the classroom. Academically, our student-athletes were statistically at the top in the area for the number of Scholar-Athletes per sport. Our head coaches continuously attend professional development programs through their state sport association to ensure they are up-to-date on new coaching techniques and important issues that affect our student-athletes. All of our coaches are required to take OHSAA mandated classes before they can coach at the interscholastic level. In addition to CPR, first aid and concussion protocol training, they are required to take a Fundamentals of Coaching Class and attend a Pupil Activity Class to receive their State permit. All total, our coaches spend approximately $200.00 of their own money so they can coach interscholastic sports. We sincerely appreciate all they do for our student-athletes. The Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions took place this fall, honoring four individuals for their athletic achievements and/ or contributions to the Streetsboro Athletic Department. During his high school career Chuck was a two time PCL champion, PCL runner up, three time sectional champ, three time district runner up and three time state qualifier. Chuck’s junior year he placed second in the state and fourth his senior year. He was fortunate to be part of a very talented team lead by coaches Mr. Larry Marek, Mr. Will O’Donnel and Mr. Jim Boardwine. With their guidance they won a team State Championship Title in Chuck’s senior year. Chuck’s record consists of 111 wins and 40 losses. Marlene Speck Marlene graduated from Streetsboro High School in 1979 and is a lifelong resident of Streetsboro. While in high school Marlene was a cheerleader. Her school spirit and bright smile were noticeable to all. Shortly after graduation Marlene was hired as a building secretary for the school district, where she is still employed today, 37 years later. Once employed by the district, Marlene was asked to sell tickets for football games. Her warm personality was perfect for greeting fans. In fact, every year the athletic department received compliments from visiting fans about her friendly approach to her job. This year marks the 36th year that Marlene has been selling tickets for football games at the main gate. Marlene is our “Most Valuable Game Day Employee!” Randy Tevepaugh, A.D. Wait Primary - Amy Cruse - Principal Our Wait students and staff have had a great first half of the school year! At the start of the year, we hosted the annual Fathers’ Walk where hundreds of dads or male role models brought their child to school and enjoyed a breakfast treat. The students enjoyed starting the day with their dads! The Kindergarten students traveled to Beckwith’s Apple Orchard and engaged in hands-on activities to understand the seasonal changes in our environment, specifically with apple trees. They participated in a variety of curricular activities such as making applesauce, graphing favorite apples, and reading fiction and non-fiction stories about apples and trees. Our fall fundraiser allowed us to fund additional iPad minis. All of our students have access to using them as all of our homeroom classrooms, reading tutors, and intervention specialists have a small group set to use with their students. The students love the games and apps that enrich and support their learning. Our PTA has provided tremendous support to us by helping our students have a smooth start and supporting them with learning how to have successful transitions during the beginning and end of the day and during lunch time. Our PTA room parents have organized fun-filled parties and parent volunteers also helped at Fathers’ Walk, Parent Conferences, and Grandparents’ Celebrations. Grandparents were entertained by a variety of performances and activities during our annual Grandparents’ Celebrations in November. Some classrooms performed plays or read poems. Other classrooms engaged in crafts and hands-on activities. All participants created wonderful memories. Our Kindergarteners had a great time exploring a Streetsboro Fire truck and learning about fire safety. Streetsboro Police officers, in partnership with Mrs. Cruse, taught our Preschool, Kindergarten, and First Graders about safe practices to be prepared in the event of an emergency. We invited the police and firemen to enjoy our holiday sing along with us. This jolly event was led by music teacher, Mr. Izzo! Campus Elementary - Kristen Cottrell - Principal Best in Ohio Campus students logged 314,250 reading minutes into the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge between May 10 and September 3, 2015. This made Campus Elementary the top school in the state of Ohio, for those participate in the program. To reward our kids for their accomplishment, current 3rd and 4th grade students were treated to a surprise assembly on Tuesday, November 24. Prior to watching the magic show the top readers in each grade level were recognized. They received a certificate, a special brag tag and signed the front of the banner Campus received from Scholastic. All students who participated in the program received a 'Best in Ohio' brag tag and will sign the back of the banner. Once signed the banner will be displayed in the Campus entryway. Students were also treated to cupcakes and a surprise high school student reader once they returned to their classrooms after the show. In addition to receiving the banner the school was also given a plaque and recognized in ‘2016 Book of World Records’, published by Scholastic books, as the top school in Ohio. Campus students participated in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge as part of our 2014-15 school year summer reading program. The goal of the summer reading program is to help our students maintain or advance their reading skills over the summer months to avoid a common phenomena often referred to as 'summer setback' or ‘summer slide’. Students who do not read over the summer show a measurable regression in their reading skills when they return to school and it is common for teachers to spend the first month of school re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. Participation in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge was just one part of our summer reading program. During the last few weeks of school a team of tutors and teachers at Campus planned and held our ‘Right to Read’ week to keep reading in the forefront of the kids thoughts. During ‘Right to Read’ week students ‘travelled’ across America on the Right to Read Express, arriving at a new location each day. Different areas of the school were decorated to represent our new destination each day for students to visit and they received reading material and a coloring sheet to learn more about our destinations. During ‘Right to Read’ week kids learned how to log into the Summer Reading Challenge and started logging in their minutes to get used to the program. Another research support piece of the summer reading program was to make sure our pupils had access to reading materials. All second and third grade students were allowed to select five books from our special book swap library to take home over the summer months. These books were made available for our students through donations from Streetsboro families and purchases from our fall fundraiser. Along with the reading materials from the book swap students were also give access to Storia. Storia is an online reading program, through Scholastic Books, that provides students with access to over 2,000 titles over a wide range of subject and elementary appropriate reading levels. We will participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge this upcoming summer and hope our students can, once again, be the top school in Ohio. Any Campus parents who would like to help plan our Right to Read week and Summer Reading Challenge kick off activities in the spring are invited to contact Kristen Cottrell, the Campus principal. Zach Call performs a magic trick with magician Rick Smith Jr. Top readers in Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge 2015 Mrs. Gennero, coordinator of the bookswap and librarian, with Mario Puleo, Summer Reading Challenge, top reader. New Student Recognition Program Research has show that pre-adolescent children respond best to positive reinforcement to improve behavior and task performance. This year Campus introduced a new element to our positive behavior incentives and supports for our kids to diversify the ways and reasons we recognize our students. Here is how it works: Each month classroom teachers select a social or academic skill to focus on (i.e. completing their homework, scoring 100% on their AR tests, treating others with kindness). Each time the students accomplish the focus skill they earn a ticket for the monthly drawing. At the end of each month these tickets are turned into the office for the monthly drawing. Students can earn a special Campus tee shirt, a reward of their choice from the prize bag or snack tickets for the lunchroom. Henry Defer Intermediate - Jeff Keruski & Lindsay Zenker This has been a great 1st Semester at Defer Intermediate. The staff has been focusing on academic and social/emotion needs of our students. We have enjoyed the addition of many new students and staff members, adding new technology to support learning, Community Engagement, and above all else we have observed significant growth in our students. Daily our Student Council Members raise and lower the flag. Local VFW, taught our students proper Flag Handling Every Thursday is College day at Defer Learning the value of giving back to our community Mayor Broska welcomes Defer Students to school- Autism Awareness at Defer Mohican Trip 2015 Middle School - Steve Hatch - Principal The Middle School students are off to a great start, and have been working very hard! This year at the Middle School, we welcomed 189 seventh grade students, as well as 30 students new to Streetsboro Schools. It has not taken long for all of our students to figure out how to get where they are going, and most importantly how to open their lockers! In the classroom, our students are really busy with a vast array of projects and activities. Seventh grade is off to an exciting start! In language arts, the students are reading the book Seedfolks, and partaking in wonderful theme-based class discussions. In science, students are studying the effects of hydrologic (the flow of water). Students are studying the properties of multiplication and division, simplifying equations, and solving simple and multi-step equations in math classes. Finally, in social studies, students are comparing ancient Greece and Rome to our democracy. In October, our 7 th grade students had a lot of fun celebrating Greek Day as a culminating activity! In eighth grade, the students are reading Flowers for Algernon in language arts class, while applying what they are learning about DNA and heredity in science to the story. In social studies, students are studying about the European Explorers and early America. In math, students are learning about negative exponents, properties, and scientific notation. This year, teachers have combined their classes so that students can research topics of interest in a project based on a concept created by Google called “Genius Hour.” As they conclude their research, we all look forward to their presentations. Outside of the class rooms, the student body has been keeping very busy! Fall sports have recently come to an end (7th and 8th grade football, 7th and 8th grade Volleyball, soccer, and cross country), but we are now preparing to “kick off” winter sports (boys basketball, girls basketball, and wrestling). In addition to sports, our STEM club began activities in the month of November; exploring the world of robotics. Our student council recently concluded Red Ribbon Week as our students dressed up each day as a way of saying no to drugs and alcohol. The middle school Diversity Club busily collected canned foods for the Streetsboro Community Cupboard as a fun community service project to help out families in need during the holidays. As a way of showing appreciation for the many donations, students get to partake in the 147th Annual Turkey Trot 1 Mile Run and Walk. This year we said goodbye to some long time staff members; Mrs. Betts, Miss. Spurlock, and Mr. Day; all of these wonderful teachers will be missed. In their place, we welcome Miss Lauren Sturdivant who is teaching the high school and middle school choir classes, Mr. Carl Singer who is teaching 7th grade math classes, and Mrs. Julie Haluch who is teaching 7th grade Skills for Success (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens) and 8th grade Study Skills. High School - James Hogue - Principal Vincent Suber - Assistant Principal Congratulations to Streetsboro High School Senior Hannah Schuller for being named Portage County Teen of the Month! This tremendous honor was bestowed upon Hannah by the Portage County Teen Board, which meets monthly to review student nominees from Portage County high schools. Sophomore Halie Rippin represented SHS and her regional burn camp at the International Association of Fire Fighters’ International Burn Camp, Sept. 26 – Oct. 3. This special program recognizes both fire fighters and burn-injured youth who have made significant contributions to their local burn camp program. Local burn camps help young burn survivors to overcome problems related to trauma, physical debilitation and disfigurement associated with burn injuries. Congratulations Halie! We are proud to call you a Rocket! Jim Boardwine and the English Dept. produced a fantastic Poetry Slam on Friday. For those that attended, it was obvious what an excellent job the kids did. This is another example of an experience that most schools do not offer to students. WSTB Staff attends National Radio Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
