Accessorize with dark framed glasses, taped around the nose piece, to make it look extra-geeky. hippie Be a free spirit this Halloween! Go crazy with tie-dyed shirts, leather and suede vests, anything with fringe, long quilted or patchwork shirts, and bell bottom jeans. Accessorize with love beads, peace buttons, and funky sunglasses. Complete your outfit with a long wig and headband, along with flowers in your hair. old man/woman Dress in something old looking. Get gray hairspray or a wig, an old hat, and wire framed glasses. For the old man, get a cane and carry a newspaper under your arm. For the old lady, add hair rollers, and carry a bulky black purse. Lego The perfect costume for any Lego fan! Decide what color Lego you would like to be, find pants and a long sleeve shirt that are the same color. Next find a cardboard box to fit your body and cut out holes for your arms and neck. For a hat, use another cardboard box and place a hat inside for more comfort. To complete the look add plastic cups then spray paint the boxes and cups your Lego color. Crayon Show off your favorite color with this great costume! Dress in a solid color sweat suit. Paint or use a magic marker to print the word, “crayon” in large black letters down the length of your body. Going with the same color scheme, create a pointed hat, using construction paper. Staple a string on it and tie it under your neck to keep it secure. And the final touch: Paint your face in your crayon color. The incredible Hulk Being big and green never looked so good! Get a pair of baggie sweatpants and a plaid shirt. Cut the sleeves off of the shirt and keep it open. The sweatpants can be cut at the bottom or kept whole. Pick up adult-size disposable diapers or create fabric diapers from soft white cotton and an over-sized safety pin. Wear a t-shirt, a bib, and put on a bald “wig” or wear a baby hat. String a pacifier on a ribbon and hang it around your neck to finish up your costume. Or get childish pajamas, a blanket, stuffed animal and a sippy cup. Remember to act the part! Simply pair dress pants, a white button-up shirt, and a red/blue tie over a royal blue t-shirt. Print the Superman logo and attach it to the tee. Don’t forget to add Clark Kent glasses to make the outfit complete. Dorothy Straight from the yellow brick road is Dorothy. Start with a men’s long sleeve button-up shirt (preferably blue and white). Cut the sleeves and neck off. Use a piece of the sleeves, make straps for a dress. Add white shirt and shorts to wear underneath. Throw on a pair of blue jeans, a western-looking denim shirt, boots, and bandana. Don’t forget the cowboy hat and a kid’s riding horse. And you’re in the wild, wild west! Cowgirl: Grab a pair of blue jeans or a denim skirt. Find a western-looking denim shirt (or plaid shirt). Accessorize with a cowgirl hat, cowgirl boots, and a bandana. Add a vest and a kid’s riding horse to complete the look. Scarecrow “I haven’t got a brain... only straw.” Pair overalls or jeans with a flannel shirt and a straw hat. Cruella De VIl Evil never looked so good. Find a black dress and a black and white polka dot jacket. Add lots of pearls and black gloves. Don’t forget the long cigarette holder. Add black and white tights and red shoes. Complete the look with a black and white wig or using temporary hair dye. Skeleton Bones never looked this cool! Grab a black sweat suit and add “bones” to it with fabric paint or white felt. Mix things up by just doing this to the top and altering a cardboard box to look like an X-ray machine. Butterflies are many different colors or sometimes just one or two colors, be creative! Spider Think Black Widow! For this costume, you will need a black hooded sweatshirt, pair of black pants or sweats, and black socks or booties. Also, four pairs of black tube socks or nylons. Stuff the tube socks with batting, newspaper, or other extra material to make the legs. Then sew the eight legs onto the black outfit. Paint eyes on the top of the hood and a large red spot on the back. Bumble Bee Bee the buzz of the party. Begin with black leggings and a black turtle neck. Add stripes to the entire outfit by using yellow duct tape or fabric paint. Accessorize by creating wings made out of construction paper and antennae made out of pipe cleaners. Grab a pair of jeans, a trench coat or rain jacket, an umbrella, and adorable rain boots. Find a variety of stuffed cats and dogs and attach them to the umbrella, and you are ready to go trick or treating! Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Rain You never know what to expect when it comes to the weather! Find a pair of baby blue scrubs and cap at Goodwill. Add cotton batting to the cap and throughout the scrubs to depict clouds. Armed with a spray bottle you better watch out… you never know when there will be a “Pop-Up Shower”! Cat Meow... Grab a black long sleeve shirt and black pants. Attach the tail made from stuffed pantyhose or other fabric to the pants. Attach ears to a headband or sweatshirt hood. Mark face with whiskers. Cat in the Hat: Make the cat costume and then add a white belly with fabric paint or felt. Take a large cardboard box and cut out holes for your arms and legs. Draw channel and volume controls on front side. Then choose what TV show you’d like to be and capture it on the “screen.” Affix pipe cleaners to a headband then put it on your head for the antenna. The Price is Right Show your school spirit. Wear a university or state shirt and a pair of jeans. Buy a poster board and foam core to make a bidding sign and name tag. Add the final touches by adding earphones to act like a microphone. Turn the page to see creative costumes for wheelchair users! Be Your own monster GOODWILL Cinderella’s Carriage Your carriage awaits, Your Majesty. To create the carriage you will need two hula hoops and clear plastic. To make the wall of the carriage, tape plastic circles on the inside of each hula hoop. Place the hula hoops between the seat and armrest. Measure the distance between hula hoops after it is placed in the wheelchair and cut a rectangle strip from the plastic for the top of the coach. Attach the top of the carriage using tape. Decorate as desired. Spray glitter onto the walls of the carriage to add magical sparkle. Decorate tires with vines. Battery-powered lights may be attached to light up your special carriage at night. To create Cinderella, find a light blue formal dress. Add a tiara and white gloves. Fred Flintstone YABA DABA DOO! To make Fred’s car, build side frames for the wheelchair from lightweight pieces of wood. Then, cover the wheelchair wheels and the wood-constructed front wheel with gray fabric to look like the stone wheels of the Flintstone mobile. Make the roof from wood and cover with suedelike fabric. The frame for the roof attaches to the handles of the wheel chair. Cut a steering wheel from wood and place it on wooden dowels that attach to the wheelchair frame. Dress like Fred by finding an oversized orange shirt and a white long sleeve shirt. Cut the sleeves off the orange shirt and make circles out of black fabric and glue them to the orange shirt. Don’t forget the blue tie! Race Car Zoom, Zoom. Using a box, decorate it like your favorite race car driver. Create a steering wheel out of a foam wreath. Don’t forget to wear your favorite race car driver’s jersey and a helmet to complete the look! This can be a real cool costume for high tech power chairs. Biker Take handlebars from a bike or motorcycle and balance on footrests to simulate driving a motorcycle. Handlebars with a big light work best. Wear your best biker costume including: leather vest, white tee with sleeves rolled up, bandana, leather pants, gloves, and boots. DJ’s Booth Party the night away in this great costume! Start by finding a box big enough to place around the wheelchair. Cut out a side of the box to fit snug around the wheelchair. Spray paint the whole box silver or gray. Using more cardboard make circles and spray paint them black and silver. Once dry, place the black on top of the silver circles and place around the box, to look like record spinners. Create a sound control area using carboard and black buttons. To create the DJ look, find a t-shirt with your favorite band on it, jeans, and accesorize with big headphones. Be Your own monster GOODWILL Drummer Party like a rockstar! Find a used drum set and mount to the chair, carry drumsticks, and be sure to have sunglasses, spiked hair, and a leather vest. If you can’t find a used drum set, use large and small trashcans cut to size and paint or foil for shiny effect. Lamp shades also work well. king’s Throne Your Royal Highness... Convert a wheelchair into a throne, by wrapping the back and arm rests with gold or silver foil/ paper. Use plastic gems, old jewelry, and Christmas garland to give it that “special look”. Simply wear a cape of a royal color (velvet looks great). Complete the look with a crown. King Riding a Horse Ride in style with this great costume. Look for a kids riding horse and attach it to the wheelchair. Drape a couple of bed sheets around the wheelchair and the horse, to cover them up. Opt for electric lights. • Make sure store bought costumes and accessories (such as wigs, hats, and masks) are flame-retardant. It should be stated on the label. • Masks and facial coverings should be well-ventilated for easy breathing. • Swords, knives, and similar accessories should be made of soft, flexible material. • Be careful when using colored, cosmetic contact lenses. They should be used only under the supervision of an eye-care professional. The wear time should be limited to the shortest duration possible. Trick-or-Treating • Children younger than 12 years old should not be allowed to go trick or treating by themselves. • If an older child or young teen is going out with friends, make sure that you know where they are going and who they are going with. • Different cities have varying age limits for trick-or-treaters. Know your city’s ordinance. • Travel in groups. Make sure someone in the group carries a charged call phone. • Wear bright, reflective costumes, carry glow sticks, flashlights, or add strips of reflective tape so you’ll be more visible; make sure the costumes aren’t long so that you don’t trip. • Children should trick-or-treat only in well-lit areas and should only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on, no alleys or dark side streets. • Talk to your children about strangers. Never, ever let your children go into a stranger’s house, car, and don’t let them talk to strangers unless you are with them or you say it’s okay. • Be respectful of homeowner’s property. Do not traipse through yards - use sidewalks if possible. • Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home by an adult. It’s a good idea for trick-or-treaters to eat a snack before heading out, so they won’t be tempted to nibble on treats that haven’t been inspected.
