The big bash finals are on and unfortunately the Scorchers are not there, the females that I thought were in with a
real chance of winning it faded in the Semi Final as did the
men.
Its a great spectacle and one that is here to stay. So how
do we rate WA’s performance, the State Junior sides did
not manage to make finals, and the silverware cupboard
is not looking too good. Is there something wrong with
WA cricket? Listening to loads of people, everyone has an
opinion and thats what makes this game so great, we all
know better. Its best to put your trust in the coaches and
have an opinion but perhaps keep it to yourself.

The NO-BALL
Recap
If I have one pet hate its the front foot no ball and as it turns out
so does the Australian Coach
I think that this warm up drill is worth a
mention again.
One of the jokes (not so funny) that came out of the Boxing Day
test is that the Australian’s had to take 23 wickets to win the game.
That front foot no ball is a curse and one that is not too difficult to
erradicate.
I believe that discipline and being harder in the nets is the
answer. Players too often just run in and bowl in the nets and I
can guarantee you that a good portion of these hundreds of balls
bowled are front foot no balls. As coaches come down on the
bowlers hard each and every time to prevent this from happening
in a game. That one wicket that is ruled out because of this might
cost you the match. It something that if martialled properly will be
stopped, not completely, but in the main giving your side the best
chance of winning.
Why do players bowl no balls when run ups, especially in the
internationals, are measured to the cm? its because either the
bowler isn’t bothered to hit their marks consistently or if the bowler
want to put in an effort ball and they over stride.
If the bowler couldn’t be bothered they need to be pulled aside and
given a talking too about being a part of the team and their role and
what is expected. If they are over striding to deliver an effort ball,
well then explain that the extra bit of pace doesn’t come from the
run up but rather from their energy through the crease and follow
through.
Too many extras and life lines are attributed to front foot no balls
and the bowlers need to take ownership of this but at training the
coaches need to come down hard on the offenders not only for the
team but for the personal development of the bowler.
Put in a bit of effort to keep your players doing the right thing in the
nets and see the benefits in the game.
Tips
If you are struggling to keep your eyes level
and your head falls away whilst batting what
you might want to try is to keep your chin as
close to your shoulder as possible at delivery
then when offering a shot tilt your shoulder
toward the pitch of the ball and try to keep
your head cemented to the shoulder. Once
you consciously do this for a period of time it
becomes second nature and should prevent
your head from falling away.
The days of just a lap around the oval is over.
Instead get each player to take a ball with them
and get them to roll it in front of them with one
hand and pick it up with the other and so on.
This not only gets the running component in but
also gets them to roll the ball, judge the pickup
and swooping to collect.
Players tend to throw the ball too far ahead
which defeats the purpose so get them to roll it
5m ahead and do so for the entire run.
The Beginning
Again
Having just watched the Boxing Day Test
during a masterclass the one thing that was
mentioned was to always revist the stance.
We have gone through this a number of times
but here are a few more reasons to try and get
this right.
Feet should be a comfortable width apart - wide
enough to be able to move forward or back to
the ball easily and efficiently. Too narrow and
you have no stability and too wide impedes your
movement.
Hands - try to maintain your hands close to your
body, never let your hands get away from your
body and keep your backlift just out towards
slips.
Keep your eyes level - on delivery your eyes
need to be level, every player is different and
whether you tap your bat or hold your bat up the
key is that as the ball is delivered your eyes are
level.
There are many players that do all these things
differently but the keys are watching the ball eyes level - ability to move to the ball and access
to the ball.

Where too now?
As everyone knows only the very top are able to live the dream
of playing cricket as a profession, what happens to the rest?
Not everyone is able to make a living from playing cricket, its a great
dream and one that we wish we could all live but the reality is that
we can’t. What makes the difference is knowing in yourself whether
you have what it takes to make it. Not false hope or your parents
telling you that you are better than everyone else but truth in what
you are capable of.
Those that are placed on a pedestal very rarely have what it takes to
make it to the top, they are filled with nonsense and have little to no
work ethic as in their mind they are at the top of the game and have
nothing to improve on.
Those that have a level head and are realistic about their abilities
need to ensure that they have a balanced life. Putting all your efforts
into something that is not going to be your life profession at a young
age makes you miss out on life. This goes especially for those
doing year 12. You get one shot at this and unless you have already
been identified as one to watch, I would be putting my eggs in the
academic or trades basket but still being the best I could be on the
field. Nothing is stopping you from achieving higher honours after
year 12.
For those that are in a position to play cricket for a profession, make
the most of it. The life of a professional cricketer is finite so make
hay whilst the sun shines but make provisions for your future. Get
something behind you whether it be a Business degree or even a
Level 3 Coaching accreditation, but don’t just rest on your laurels as
from one season to the next you never know.
We all at times wish we could make a living doing something we are
passionate about but dreams don’t pay the bills so be an achiever,
strive to be the best you can be but be realistic.

1000 Runs
Have you ever hit a hundred? Imagine hittin
1000 in one innings.
An indian teenager scored an amazing 1009 not
out in a 2 day school game. He achieved this off
323 deliveries.
The team ended up making 1465 for 2. Sounds
crazy but its true.
WA Country
Champs
The competition where WA had a real chance
to come home with the silverware.
In game one against NSW, WA won by 19 runs
with Patrick Butker taking 5 for 58 and Jono
Whitney contributing 73 with the bat.
After losing to SA, WA finally ended up 4th
missing out on bringing home the spoils.
AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY XI (MEN)
Ben Smith (SA, c), Michael Arblaster (NSW),
Nathan Walsh (VIC), Kaden Dickfos (QLD), Ben
Parish (SA), Tony Hampson (QLD), Ben Boyd
(VIC), Shayne Bidwell (WA), Adam Ward (QLD),
Scott Burkinshaw (NSW), Sean Nottle (SA),
Patrick Butler (WA).
AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY XI (FEMALE)
Norma Ovasuru (EAP, c), Brittany Perry (SA), Tess
Cooper (QLD), Jane Neil (VIC), Tabatha Saville
(NT), Lauren Mainwaring (WA), Chelsea Moscript
(VIC), Hannah Clarke (QLD), Anna Paton (QLD),
Emma Faint (SA), Emma Gallagher (VIC), Lexi

Did you See...
Great spectacle in the Big Bash Renegades vs the Scorchers.
Some great efforts, firstly Gale and Finch then Dorff with a screamer
caught and bowled then Klinger and Marsh carrying their bats and
winning the game....
Test Best of 2015
Here is how the Test standings finished for 2015
Batting
1. Steve Smith
Australia
2. Kane Willimson
New Zealand
3. Joe Root
England
4. AB De Villiers
South Africa
5. David Warner
Australia
6. Younus Khan
Pakistan
7. Angelo Mathews
Sri Lanka
Its about the team and it doesn’t matter how menial the task its
about what you can do to make a difference. I tell the players that
are 12th man to be the best 12th man ever. Justin Langer is one
person who demands excellence and leads by example.
8. Hashim Amla
South Africa
9. Alistair Cook
England
10. Misbah-ul-Haq
Pakistan
Well done Justin and I hope that all young players follow in his
footsteps.
Bowling
My highlight was right at the end and something that in my view
epitomises what a legend Justin Langer is. The game was over
and the camera went to Justin Langer and there he was picking up
empty bottles and putting them in the bin, helping stack the chairs
that to me shows the class of this man.
Captaincy in
cricket, often goes
to the best or the
most senior player,
not the best leader
in the team.

Want to Bowl Faster?
We all want that extra yard of speed without losing
control here are 2 things to check.
Wrist Position - ensure that you have your fingers and
wrist behond the ball on delivery. If you don’t then the
ball is released without the full force possible. Practice
this by flicking the ball to a partner focusing on wrist
and fingers behind the ball and seam up.
Momentum and Finishing the action - the run up must
build up and continue through to target not slow up
(stutter), ensure your bound is not too high taking away
that momentum whilst transitioning from run up to
delivery. Follow through and finish the action.

Future’s League
The Futures League squad played at
Munaka Oval.
The squad consisting of Will Bosisto (c), Jake
Carder, Nick Hobson, Hilton Cartwright, Jaron
Morgan, Darcy Short, Josh Inglis, Matt Kelly,
Josh Nicholas, Liam O’Connor, Ryan Duffield,
Michael Hogan played from the 11th to 14
January against the ACT.
WA romped to victory with a double century to
Bosisto and centuries to Cartwright and Short,
made it an easy win.
Judging Length
Drill
One thing I found useful was getting
players to judge length, here is a simple
drill
Get the player to tell you where on the pitch
they feel comfortable going forward to the
ball, place a piece of tape, chalk line or cones
there.
Go back 15m and use tennis balls to under
arm them at the batsman at different lengths (I
use tennis balls because at slow pace, when
pitched short gets the batsman playing back
to the ball as it will bounce.
Make it a competition everytime they get it
wrong they run, burpees etc,

Arm / Shoulder
Stretch
Before bowling or throwing doing a basic warm up is a good
idea.
Bring one arm across your chest and the other comes up and
around that arm and back towards the same shoulder. Hold for 10
and repeat.
What to Teach the
Little Ones
There is no point in teaching young kids
about weight transfer or unweighting but you
can teach them that cricket is fun.
Age is important when it comes to cricketers and
where they are in their development. With thre
young ones the key is to get them to have fun
because it is fun not results that will bring them
back. Besides hitting, bowling and catching
teaching the players about balance agility and
speed (athleticism) is key as this is one thing that
the player can maintain in sport and in life.
Start getting these young players to start having
a positive attitude, no place for temper tantrums
nip them in the bud early. They need to respect
themsleves , their team mates and the game, if
taught the right values at this age it will remain
with them forever.
Lastly give praise and encouragment when
deserved, there is nothing that diminishes praise
like mediocre performances.Praise those for
doing the right thing and this will filter through
the rest. Get these kids to come back next year
and you would have done a good job.

Country XI Named
Following the championships 3 WA players excelled
Patrick Butler, Shayne Bidwell and Lauren Mainwaring named in the
Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships
team of the tournaments.
Finishing fourth in the Men’s Division and sixth in the Women’s
Division these players stood out from the rest. Congratulations to
them.
Tips for Umpiring this
Weekend
A few tips if you are out in the middle this weekend
1. Know the rules well for your specific age group if modified.
2. Make sure that you have everything you need out in the midlle,
counter etc....
3. Make sure that you are not late.
4. Work with the other umpire and scorers.
5. Ensure that the ground is fit for play.
6. Make your signals clear and await acknowledgment.
7. Ensure that the spirit of the game is maintained.
U18 Female
Championships
WA went over to compete at the National
competition but did not fare well
Their first game was against ACT/NSW Country who
amassed 258 for 6 of their 50 overs WA in return only
managed 62. Unfortunately game 2 was no better, WA
only managed 48 and Tasmania got the runs in the 16th
over.
In game 3 WA fell 26 runs short vs NSW Metropolitan
and then were no match for Victoria.
WA returned winless from the tournament and can only
but look forward to next year.
Back It Up
Just a reminder to do the basics.
Watching the Big Bash and seeing the intent makes me
think about why players don’t do it all the time? Why
does the non striker not be in a position to take that
run? I think its just laziness. There is no reason not to
be in the best possible position to take runs when they
are on offer.
Runs don’t just appear in the scorebook you have to
put them there so make sure you play your part.

A Wide Stance
What does it restrict you from doing?
We understand that everyone is different but having a stance this wide
restricts your movement, keeps you crouched with a low centre of gravity,
I think you would find it very difficult to be quick on your feet from this
position.

Under Arm Throw
The under arm throw is something that isn’t
practised often as it is assumed that everyone
knows how to do it.
The first thing is to ensure that you have a good
grip on the ball, not tight but controlled. Bring
the hand and arm back to hip height.
With the opposite foot to the throwing arm step
towards the target, swing the arm through like a
pendulum (not bent) and release the ball with the
arm extended to target.
Release the ball to early and its into the ground,
too late and its over the keepers head. During
training make a conscious effort to do some
under arm throwing.

Whats Wrong With this
Pic?
In junior cricket there are lots of things that
coaches need to pick up on and try to remedy
and they say its an easy job....
In this drawing you have a batsman and a keeper.
Can you spot anything wrong in what they are
doing?
The batsman has missed the ball. Why? Firstly they
haven’t moved their feet. If you don’t use your feet
to get into a good position chance of playing a good
shot are diminished. Secondly the swing is right
across the line. No feet, no weight transfer no head
over the ball, no technique.
Lets look at the keeper. Crocodile hands is not the
way to catch a ball, and this happens when again
the footwork is not there. This player has simply
collapsed behind the ball which means that the
glovework goes to pot. Just like batting without
footwork the rest falls apart
