Pleas- ant Review has heard a lot of comments, good and bad, from the readers. The paper would like to give the readers a chance to voice their comments in our new column, “People’s Voice”. Please keep them to a minimum, they will be published as room is available. You may call 931-964-4853 and leave a message (reg. answering machine), e-mail at capd2@bellsouth.net or mail to P.O. Box 122, Mt. Pleasant. No names or addresses are required. The Mt. Pleasant Review Is Not Liable/Responsible for any comments made by their readers. ••••• I have only lived here for seven years but in that time I have seen more positive changes for this city since our current commissioners and city manager have been involved than with the government that was in place when I moved here. I am not sure what the rest of the citizens think of Mt. Pleasant but I would like to be proud of the city I live in and want to keep it beautiful and up to date. Guess what ... that means spending money. If you don’t want improvements for this city then I suggest you pack your stuff, put a for sale sign in your yard and find a new place to live! There are good things happening around here but for some reason all you want to see (and write about) is the negative. Maybe you are just so miserable you cannot imagine someone actually having positive thoughts or feelings toward anything. I think the Benefit Ball is a wonderful thing and can have a positive impact on the city. Instead of seeing the good it could do, you turned it into a keg party. I know there are things wrong with the city and no place (or person) is perfect. Instead of trying to tear everything and everyone down, maybe you should try to be a positive influence and possibly even get involved. I know that may seem like a novel idea to you but if you are not actively involved in trying to help this city AMERICA’S BEST VALUE INN & SUITES New Management 931-379-9800 931-379-9808 (fax) • Nice Clean Rooms • Jacuzzi & Jacuzzi Suites • High Speed Internet • HBO • Fax Services • Extended Stay • Corporate Rates www.mtpleasantabvias.com 201 Stonebrook Drive Mt. No one will want to move here or put a business. We need positive comments. I realize you have a problem with Michelle, but she and her staff are trying to make changes for a better Mt. Pleasant. Old ways aren’t working, new young people and new ideas. A good thing. A page and half is a bit much for People Choice, plus people that write these articles are cowards. Sign your name. I enjoy your paper otherwise. Gayle Attkisson ••••• Our city manager is at it again. Apparently she has another “friend” that she was planning on hiring. Since The Review is printing all of City Hall’s dirty little secrets she has had to put her hiring on hold. The “friend” has taken to facebook in an attempt to bash the review. Ironically, renaming The Review “The Basher”. I would think with all of the skeletons in this person’s closet they would have more pressing matters to address instead of worrying about grammatical errors in The Review. I wouldn’t think this potential new hire for the city would want her personal issues (which would not portray the city’s hiring practices in a good light) brought out in the open. ••••• I can’t believe our fair city touted the BBQ fest as a “family event” and then set up a beer The Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474 Phone: (931) 964-4853 Fax: (931) 964-4758 e-mail: capd2@bellsouth.net pen. I guess now since we have our current officials in office every event must have a place to get drunk. Sounds like a “family event” to me. What a disgrace! You can’t pray in city hall anymore but I guess it’s ok to get drunk. So, let me get this straight. It’s now our fault our water is bad since we have galvanized pipes in our homes! Wait! Maybe we’ve stuck our hoses in something we shouldn’t have, or better yet we flushed something down the drain. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! How about explain what really happened at the water treatment plant. Those letters in The Review from TDEC gave us an idea of what really is going on around here. Don’t buy the city’s crap for a minute. After all, they’ve been lying for years. Looks like some city employees, and employees of some of the local industry in the area are squirming. They don’t like all this that’s been put in The Review. Hmmmm, could it be because it’s true? Maybe they don’t like folks poking around into money changing hands. Keep the pressure on folks. Make them squirm. ••••• Seriously people. Absolutely Dead Brilliant! Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as have cultivated much valuable lessons as: People’s Voice. . . (Continued from page 2) mess that has gone in the city... payoffs, firings, hiring of buddies, changing election times, violating The National Safe Water Drinking Act, breaking the law, voting in landfills, firing the planning commission, loading up the board with paid off commissioners that vote on behalf of big business in the town, and all you have to complain about is grammar errors in The Review? Funny thing is, the only people who don’t like The Review are either employees of the city, employees of the businesses in question, or in the “circle of friends” that are getting kickbacks from those in office. I guess it’s hard to defend all of the above so you have to find something, Ha,Ha. ••••• Listen, The Review does print good things about the city, when it’s sent to them. There would probably be more good things to print if they fired the city manager, Frierson, Colvett, Frazier, relatives of the commissioners and the city manager, and all of our city manager’s buddies. Let’s just CLEAN HOUSE! That would be some good news to report. ••••• $50,000 bonus checks! I sorry but they are not much better than a drug dealer, and they need to be put out of office. ••••• Thank you for putting the paper on line. Keep up the good work! Free Hair Cut with Color 310A S. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, -by his parents, Truth and Trust -by his wife, Discretion, -by his daughter, Responsibility, -and by his son, Reason. PLEASANT REVIEW, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013 PAGE 4 Letters to Santa Postal Notes by Robert Wakefield Well, this is not going to be the revelation of a lifetime but here goes…Christmas is coming. In a few short weeks, we will be celebrating the most joyous time of year with family and friends. And just think what we will pack into these next few weeks – Christmas parties, shopping, wrapping, caroling, church concerts, eating, last minute shopping, putting up decorations, really last-minute shopping, and perhaps the most important thing we will do...address and mail our Christmas cards to friends and family. (Notice how I said “most important”) Actually, that is not the most important cards and letters that will be sent out this year. To me, the most important letters we will handle at the Mt. Pleasant Post Office will be those that addressed to Santa. Let me tell you why. For over a hundred years, children have taken the time to sit down with a piece of paper and write a letter to Jolly Old St. Nick. In my twenty seven years with the postal service, I have really enjoyed seeing children bring their letters by the post office and trusting us to get their wish list to Santa. Last year, a father brought his young son to my window and the following conversation took place: “Mr. Postmaster, my son has a very important letter that we have to get to the North Pole before Christmas!” “Well, you have brought it to the right place,” I said, playing along. “The post office has been getting letters to Santa for a long time. We will send his letter to the North Pole, TODAY!” I looked at the young boy, and he was just beaming. You could tell he was very excited. “Ok, here is what you do. Take this envelope, and address it to Santa Claus, North Pole and put in the red mailbox that says ‘letters to Santa’. I will pick it up and get that sent off right away”, I said to the father. “We’ll do it!” the father said with great excitement. They went over to the table, and I could hear the father spell out the words for his son to write – “S” “A” “N” “T” “A”. When the youngster was finished, he ran to the box that was for Santa letters only, and mailed his wish list. What a magical moment for that father and son. I was just glad to be a part of it. If you have small children, and before you get too busy, take a moment help your child write a letter to Santa. They will not stay this young for very long and this can be a time for you both to treasure. Sending an email to Santa is just not the same. Inside the Mt. Pleasant Post Office, we will have a special place for your children to mail their letters to Santa. We will also have a place for you to bring food that we will donate to a local food bank. PLEASANT REVIEW, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013 PAGE 5 Citizens Call for Review and Freeze of High Bills The local chapter of a statewide citizen action group is asking the state for reliefon the high sewer bills for Mt. Pleasant residents. More than 150 citizens from Mt. Pleasant are petitioning the State of Tennessee’s Utility Management Review Board to do a formal review of the city’s sewer rates. Members of the Maury County Chapter of Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM) will present the petition and signatures to state officials at the Comptroller’s office in Nashville this month, in hopes of beginning the rate review process and alleviating a portion of the financial burden local people face. The text of the petition reads, “We the undersigned residents of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee request that the Utility Management Review Board (UMRB) review the sewer rates we are being required to pay. Who in his/her right mind would have authorized to fill the resulting cavities left in the street after repair work (even temporarily) with gravel ???? Do you need to save money to beautify downtown at the expense of some local residents???? Let me come to the point. I live at the end of Hay Long. I had to drive to the local auto parts store last Wednesday evening. After getting my parts, when I returned to my pick-up truck, I noticed that I had a flat tire (front right). When the tire was examined, I found that a “rock”, the shape of an arrowhead, had penetrated a perfectly good tire and Food Drive (3 years), Animal Shelter of Maury County- Donation Drive (2 years), Volunteers for the Animal Shelter,Adoption of Local Families for Christmas -gifts, meals, and gift cards were provided, Nursing Home- Goody Bags and Cookie Trays, Nursing Home- Christmas Caroling, cookie trays, and gift bags, Distribution of care packages to local motels during the Alabama and Mississippi hurricanes, and a Diaper Drive for Hope House. totally destroyed it (please see pictures below). A rock from Hay Long; as I had not driven anywhere else. May I suggest, that you Ms. Williams, drive your own car 379-3974 Now, I do not expect a reply to this letter as I am still awaiting a reply to my letter to you and the commissioners which I had sent nearly a year ago (December 2012). You probably don’t remember. Just in case - it was regarding the landfill. In short: authorized pollution. Sincerely PS. the tire is available for inspection, anytime up and down Hay Long and/or Washington, as local residents have to as they live there. I am sure you would not be very amused to get a flat tire – because of city road work. MT. PLEASANT REVIEW Inside views of gravel that punctured the tire MT.
