NORTH CENTRAL BRIARDERS
REGIONAL AND SWEEPS
NCB Members
Please join me in extending gratitude to the many volunteers who helped
to make NCB’s hosting of the BCA 2013 Colorado Regional Specialties a
grand success!
It seems like eons ago,but it was actually only just overtwo years ago on
September 2, 2011, when Denise Simenauer asked if the North Central
Briarders would host a two-day Regional Specialty in Colorado during the
National Specialty week.
This was an alarming request to the NCB board as our club had never
before ventured down this path. Although the then members of our Board
had been active in the dog show world for quite a few years, it would be a
first time experience with planning and implementing a show for most.
Nonetheless, in just 6 days, our board unanimously voted in favor of the
regionals and our planning began. We had a “field of dreams” ahead of
us.
By the end of the month, the two-day Regional had been changed by BCA
request to two regionals on one day, the day preceding the start of the
National conformation show.
During the following months, a lot of preliminary steps were taken and on
January 12, 2012 the BCA approved our request to host two regional
specialties on October 4, 2013. We were on our way!
The BCA approval letter did caution us that AKC limits the entry to 100
total entries per show when holding two shows on one day. Of course we
had no expectation that we would come close to that limit. Weren’t we
pleasantly surprised when the show secretary issued the judging program
to reveal 19 entries in the puppy sweepstakes, 7 entries in the veteran
sweepstakes, 86 entries in the morning regional and 85 entries in the
afternoon regional!!
Thank you all who contributed to our effort through joining us with entries
in the Regional events, through your generosity of time or donations,
through enjoying the wonderful fundraising merchandise we have offered
over the past year, and through finding great deals at our next-to-new
sales table. It is the support of friends of the Briard that enables our clubs
to present successful events for our members.
We are grateful to Julie Field, Mark Houston-McMillan and Jacqueline Stacy
for accepting the assignments to judge these shows.
I hope that you enjoyed Colorado as much as I did and found time to make
some outstanding Mile High Memories!
Thank you very much.

Julie Field
I would like to thank the North Central Briarders for inviting me to judge
the Regional Specialty Sweepstakes as part of the National Specialty this
year. I was a little hesitant to accept the invitation as I had not performed
in this capacity before. As an owner-handler, I’ve always been on the
other side of the dog so to speak. I have also not been able to attend a
National Specialty before so with some thought I accepted the invitation,
what a better way to be involved and participate in this breed I love so
much. I’m so glad I did. What a wonderful experience and what a
pleasure to see Briards from breeders that I have not seen previously.
With my background in performance sports, I was primarily focused on
movement and structure. I saw a lot of really great dogs that moved well
and in my opinion could very well do the job they were bred for with
efficiency and ease.
I was very pleased with the temperaments of all of the junior puppies.
Most were very happy to be in the ring and easily stood for examination,
some a bit more wiggly than others.
The bites were all good. And the eyes and pigment around the eyes were
all very good. Fronts and chests seemed to be the biggest issues I saw in
the dogs. Top lines were generally good with a few that did not illustrate
the standard. A few tails were a bit short and some tail carriage was not
correct. Rears were good.
There were a few classes that it was difficult to give placements because
the dogs were all fine examples of the breed.
Veterans judging was much harder than I ever thought it would be. All of
the Veterans handled the ring like they have never left. I enjoyed seeing
the older Briards in such great condition and still loving their time in the
ring. The support of the spectators for the veterans was absolutely tearjerking!
Thank you so much for a wonderful experience!

Morning Regional
It was an honour to be invited to judge the North Central Regional Specialty and a
privilege to be able to have a large entry with great depth of quality . Some
observations were - good heads and bites ( there were some receding back skulls) –
temperaments in general were good however continued work is required – fronts need
attention with some high placed point of shoulders on the neck - tails were of good
length reaching the hock, few twisted tails and some tails were carried high and lacking
the crook – coat texture needs attention with few real goat like hair texture – legs were
generally straight front and rear – muscle tone was lacking in many exhibits – gait was
generally sound and there were some having excellent timing and giving the impression
of gliding along without touching the ground. Overall the breeders need to be
commended for the high quality of Briards presented to me and I think the future looks
very positive for the breed.
Puppy, 9-12 Months Dog
1st 103 A Tawny coloured with good temperament, body proportions and body angles
front and rear. Although young, had balanced supple and light gait. It was a difficult
choice between this dog which I gave winners to and the reserve winner dog. The
deciding factor for winners was the impressive masculine head with high set natural
ears, parallel planes and rectangular back skull & muzzle.
12-18 Month Dogs
1st 109 A Tawny male with good body balance and head planes. Moderate angles with
balanced free movement.
2nd 105 A Tawny male with good temperament and head proportions. Preferred the
body balance, angles and movement on the first place. Tail carriage could be lower.
Bred-By-Exhibitor Dogs
1st 113 Black male with good rectangular head with good body balance. Chest could
have more width which could come with maturity, free moving and correct low tail
carriage.
2nd 111 Tawny male with good rectangular head , body balance not as good as 1st
place and would prefer a better lay back of shoulder. Good low tail carriage.
3rd 115 Tawny male with good body balance . Free movement and would prefer a
stronger topline and temperament.
Open Black Dogs
1st 119 Very good body proportions with rectangular head and free movement. Tail
sometimes carried a bit high and temperament good but could be stronger.
2nd 117 Good body proportions and would prefer a better layback of shoulder. Moved
soundly front and rear but not as free moving as the 1st place.
3rd 121 Good rectangular head and temperament. Tail carried a bit high and did not
have the angulation of the first and second places.
Open, Tawny Dogs
1st 127 Masculine head and good body proportions. Strong topline and good angulation
front and rear. Moved soundly and could have a little more reach in front. A strong
contender for winners and was awarded reserve winner.
2nd 123 Good type with sound movement front and rear. Correct body proportions and
would prefer tighter elbows and head to be carried more proudly.
Puppy, 6-9 Months Bitches
1st 130 Good type with feminine head with floppy ears that could get better with age.
Correct body proportions and balanced with moderate angulation. Moved freely.
Puppy, 9-12 Month Bitches

strong topline. Moved freely and temperament needs continued work.
2nd 134 A tawny bitch with good temperament . Body proportions and freedom of
movement not as good as 1st place and tail could be longer in length.
12-18 Months Bitches
1st 150 Excellent type with correct body balance. Good layback of shoulder , strong
topline and correct angulation front and rear. Was a strong contender for winners bitch
however seemed to not be as settled in front movement - this should improve with age.
2nd 148 Another excellent type with good body proportions. A difficult choice between
this bitch and the first place. Layback of shoulder was not as good as the first place but
still a good shoulder.
3rd 140 A tawny bitch with good body proportions and head. Another excellent type
with correct tail carriage. Moved freely however temperament could be stronger. It was
difficult to decide between the first 3 bitches in this class.
4th 136 A tawny bitch of very good type with a pleasing rectangular head. Would prefer
a better layback of shoulder and did not move as freely as the bitches placed higher in
the class.
Bred-By-Exhibitor Bitches
1st 164 A black bitch of outstanding body proportions and good layback of shoulder.
Strong topline and slightly sloped croup. Tail carried low with crook and moved with
supple power and covered ground. A very difficult bitch to fault and was a clear
contender for winners bitch. I could have taken her home.
2nd 158 Another tawny bitch of excellent type and body proportions. Feminine head
with sound free movement and correct low carriage of tail. Layback of shoulder and
angles not as good as the 1st place.
3rd 154 A Black bitch of very good body proportions and strong topline. Moved freely
but was not as true coming and going compared to the first 2 places.
4th 160 A black bitch with good body proportions and rectangular head. Good side gait
but not as true coming and going.

1st 166 A tawny bitch of excellent type and body balance. Moderate angulation front

1st 182 Outstanding free movement – I could see this bitch working all day. Excellent
angles front and rear with strong topline. Excellent movement timing and giving the
impression of gliding along without touching the ground. Although a different type to
my winners bitch , I felt I needed to award the gait virtue and hence awarded the
reserve winners.
2nd 180 Another tawny bitch of excellent type and had good angles front and rear.
Balance movement and good low tail carriage.
3rd 178 A tawny bitch of very good type. Strong topline and good tail carriage. Would

Afternoon Regional
Judge

Many thanks to all Briarders for the opportunity to judge your
Regional Specialty. Charged with the responsibility to judge to
your Breed Standard, I ventured into this assignment with a
commitment to be true to it and mindful that the Briard I would
look to reward would be vigorous and alert, powerful without
coarseness, strong in bone and muscle exhibiting the strength
and agility of the herding dog. I took those exact words from the
General Appearance section in the AKC Briard Standard. Years
ago I attended an AKC Herding Dog Institute. It had a HUGE
impact on my views of herding dogs, the Briard in particular.
After the classroom instruction we watched these dogs work. In
pouring rain and plenty of mud, I realized the importance of coat
quality. I realized how agile and strong the Briard must be to
tirelessly work the perimeters in the mud. I realized how
important it was that the Briard be vigorous and alert. Many
thanks to all Briarders for the opportunity to judge your Regional

WB #136 - Best over all. In fine working condition with excellent legs,
exceptional rib length and short loin. Ideal coat texture with proper wave.
At times she carried her tail a bit high on the go but it didn’t take away
from all her virtues. She stood a bit soft in topline on the stack but good
on the go. “Handler Error”.
RWB #152, Though a stronger topline on the stack than the winner, not as
good on her legs.
Veteran Bitches. I will condense my comments here and say how
wonderful each of these bitches are. They are all most worthy of their AKC

ovation from the crowd and from this judge. She is remarkable and
wonderful. Superbly handled by a handsome lad whom I was told is
named Peter Simanauer.
Best of Breed - Wow! What a site to behold. As I checked each into the
ring, I was awestruck by the beautiful exceptional Briards before me. I
knew this task would be daunting but it was even more than I expected.
Again, as a steward of your breed standard, I narrowed my decision down
to two magnificent dogs, the Breed Dog, GCh. Lightning Strike El Xargall
and the Select Dog, GCh. Déjà vu Mia Cool As A Cucumber.
#201 GCh. Lightning Strike El Xargall
This stunning grey cropped ear
dog had it all. Ideal in proportion being slightly longer than tall, in no way
cobby. His neck is strongly muscled with good length. His topline is ideal
slightly inclining downward from the withers to the broad loin and croup.
His chest is broad and deep with ribs not too rounded. His breastbone is
moderate and fits to the elbows. His croup and tail are near perfection.
The crook a “J” and never was raised above the level of the back. Ideal
Coat texture in wonderful condition. Head is long, skull and muzzle of
equal length and on the same plane. Stop well marked, square nose.
#199 GCh. Déjà vu Mia Cool As A Cucmber. This upstanding handsome
cropped ear light tawny dog has great presence and exemplifies the ideal
showman with his outstanding length of neck, strong powerful, flexible,
tireless movement. He pushed the Breed dog hard and rightfully so. My
ultimate decision was on topline, croup and head planes.
I would be thrilled to have either of these dogs to award an All Breed Best
in Show to. They are that worthy.
Best of Opposite Sex
#254 GCh. Heartsong’s Duchess D’ Aubry. This lovely black cropped ear
bitch closely resembled the shape and make of the Breed and Select Dogs.
Up on leg, slightly off square, long head with parallel head planes and a
definite stop. Excellent coat texture. She won on her quality and seemed
to make her owner handler very proud.
Select Bitch
#230 GCh.Sendero’s Femme Fatale.
This black cropped ear bitch has
outstanding coat texture, a beautiful head and good legs. I would like for
her to have more length of leg and a stronger back.
AOM
#246
Ch. Déjà vu Pomme Despair Came Knocking. This light tawny
bitch is light on her feet yet powerful on the go. I would like for her to
have more length of leg.
#225 Ch. Sendero’s Hotty Toddy Hero. This young black cropped ear boy
has lots of potential. Beautiful head and expression. Great coat texture.
Just needs maturity and time to see what he will make up to be.
#207 GCh. La Vie Rose Dior August Moon CD RN. This beautifully balanced
tawny dog with a dark overlay represents his breed well. He is one of those
you can say is just darned good overall.
#211 GCh. Suite Car Named Desire. This nice tawny cropped ear boy has
great substance and bone with a dense coat. He carried himself well and
is a very worthy one.
Your breed is in very good shape if this entry typifies the Briards of today.
Your sportsmanship and courtesy extended to me by all of you and of the
show committee is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity and memory. Best of luck to Briards
and Briarders in the future.
