Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
What a great start to the month at Prettyboy Elementary! We are celebrating our teachers with
Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanks to all of you who are recognizing our teachers with special gifts and
notes this week. We are also looking forward to the Spring Fling and Plant Sale this Friday, May 6, from
5:00 to 8:00pm. Thank you to the PTA and volunteers for organizing this great event. If weather
permits, please join our students for tours of the meadow where you and your family can contribute by
planting flowers in our butterfly and sensory gardens.
PARCC testing has started at PBE. The schedule for testing is below:



5th grade will test May 2nd through May 6th. Testing times will be 10:00am to 1:00pm
3rd grade will test May 9th through May 13th. Testing times will be 9:00am to 12:35pm
4th grade will test May 16th through May 20th. Testing times will be 9:00am to 12:35pm
Testing times include specific amounts of time to provide directions as well as breaks for the students.
As always attendance is extremely important and we hope to have all students for PARCC testing.
We have a lot to celebrate at PBE as well! Congratulations to Mrs. Chenoweth who was nominated as a
Shining Star Educator through the Baltimore County PTA. Thank you to our PBE PTA for yearly
recognition of staff members for this award. Congratulations to Mrs. Kelbaugh who was nominated as
PBE’s Teacher of the Year. We also have several students to congratulate who were recognized and
received awards at The Rotary Club of Hunt Valley 2016 Four-Way Test Awards Ceremony. Please

The last day of school has officially been announced as Friday, June 17th. Thursday, June 16, and Friday,
June 17, will be half days. Prettyboy students will begin dismissal at 12:10pm. Many end of the year
school activities are listed in this edition of the newsletter, so please pay careful attention to dates and
times of upcoming celebrations and events. Two important dates for parents to know are the
Kindergarten Ceremony which will be held on Friday, June 10, at 1:15pm and the 5th Grade Farewell
which will be on June 16, at 9:30am.

Congratulations to Amelia Holter, Lilyann Price, Tracey Rodriguez and Ainsley
Yates for doing a wonderful job representing Prettyboy at the All County
Elementary Choral Festival! They did a lot of extra work on their own and during
recess to prepare for the outstanding performance.
5th graders have been preparing to sing a song for the 5th Grade Ceremony. They
have also been studying the structure/form of music, including the blues and
theme and variations. They composed their own blues song.
4th graders did a great job at the Spring Concert! Many of them have asked for a
copy of the recording of them performing our guest composer, Mr. Kapilow’s
song. The easiest way for me to get that to them is for you to email me and I will
forward it to you. 4th graders are studying rhythm and melody. They will be
composing their own rhythms and melodies.
3rd graders are continuing to work on reading rhythms and melodies. They have
also been learning about tempo and dynamics.
2nd graders have been composing their own melodies on the staff. 2 nd graders are
also studying a variety of meters.
1st graders have been learning about dynamics and tempo.
Kindergarteners continue to work on basic skills and concepts.

News about Me:
My April doctor's visit showed some nice results on my EKG, and my weight is
maintaining where it is supposed to be. I believe my (EF) is still hovering around
the 30% mark, however, I won't know for sure until my echocardiogram during my
next June visit.
Art News:
Clay Clubs...Our "May -June" session starts soon. We only have a few spots left on
Wednesdays if anyone is still interested in signing up. Tuesdays and Thursdays are
full.
Summer Art Camps 2016...Our camps are completely full. We actually filled up
over a month ago. I apologize if you couldn't get your child in, but the entire 90
spots filled up in just 3 days using this year's Stone Alley website.
Art Expo Night...Our Art Show night was an absolute success! We had over 1,500
attendees, and displayed over 2,000 artworks. Every student had artwork shown in
the Art Expo this year! I couldn't have asked for a better night!
Parent Volunteers...Thank you to all the families who donated refreshments, and
to all of the parents who contributed their time to come help hang the artwork, and
to everyone who took time to come enjoy the great social event the Art Expo has
now become. I bet some of you never want to see masking tape again! :-) Seriously
though, the Art Expo wouldn't have been amazing without the help of every parent
and their support in this community. I thank you and your kids thank you for
everything you do to make things happen around Prettyboy Elementary School!
Library Corner:
Thank you to the staff and students for helping make April’s focus on National School Library Month
such a huge success. The dedication and love the students shared for our school library was amazing.
This year’s bookmark design contest was a real success. Students shared their love of library by
designing an original bookmark that communicated the ideal of “Libraries Transform”. The winners for
this year are posted below. Each of the winners below will have their bookmarks turned into real
bookmarks to be distributed in the library.

The winner of this year’s guess the number of books in the library contest is Brody Mueller from Mrs.
Price’s class. Way to go Brody.
The Summer Reading Club begins on June 20 and ends on August 14, 2016. Online
preregistration opens on May 9. Game boards and other club materials are available in our
branches beginning June 20.

Parent volunteers will be needed for Sports days. Please look for a volunteer slip with more
details to come home in your students’ backpack, in the next week. Parents are welcome as
spectators for intermediate grades (3-5); however, extra parents cannot be accommodated for
primary sports days (K-2).
Academic Notes:
Kindergarten
Throughout May, Kindergarten students will be focusing on the following questions during
ELA: How do things change?
 How can you help out at home?
 How can you be a good citizen?
 How can things in nature be used to make new things??
We will be reading stories, answering questions, and talking about natural resources, ways that
we can protect the environment and how people work together to solve problems.
Math Essential Questions:
 How are numbers represented?
 What are efficient ways to count?
 What are flexible, effective, and efficient methods of computation?
In our Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System unit we are: counting and keeping track
of quantities, making different arrangements using 6-10 tiles, playing Racing Bears (a game that
involves counting and thinking strategically about moves on a game board), addition, subtraction
and problem solving.
1st Grade
First grade is just beginning our new reading unit. In this unit, we will be exploring the concept
of change through literature. Our targeted standards include:
Describing characters, setting and major events in a story using key details.
Comparing and contrasting the adventures and experiences of characters in stories
Writing opinions
Describing people, places, things, and events with relevant detail.
Adding drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas and
thoughts.
In Math, we are beginning Unit 8 which focuses on the development of ideas about counting
and quantity, the composition of numbers, and the operation of addition and subtraction. In
addition, we will practice counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.Other lessons include identifying
patterns in the number sequence and on the hundreds chart, reading and sequencing numbers 100
and beyond, developing meaning for counting by groups of 10, and developing strategies for
organizing sets of objects that are easy to count and combine.
2nd Grade
In May we will finish our ELA unit, “Let’s Make a Difference” as we continue to read
biographies and legends about real life heroes as well as realistic fiction stories about characters
who make a difference in their homes, schools, and communities. We will also explore our last
ELA unit for the year, “Curiosity.” In this unit, students will focus on literary text and the
author’s craft in choosing words that help to create vivid, memorable characters and events for
the reader. Students will also explore word choice as they become collectors of words and
phrases the authors have chosen to depict the characters, places, and events.
In math, we will finish our exploration of Unit 7, “Fractions” as students investigate what
fractions are and the many ways they can be represented and used. We will also explore Unit 8,
“Addition, Subtraction and the Number System.” This final number unit of Grade 2 is a
culmination of the number and operations work students have done in Grade 2. They continue to
compose and decompose numbers up to 1,000 and solve addition and subtraction problems
within 1,000. Thank you for continuing to help your child build fact fluency by practicing the
combination cards for addition and subtraction at home.
3rd Grade
Students are continuing to read novels and stories by author Roald Dahl and consider the
following questions:


How do the words and actions of characters reveal their true natures?
How do characters, plots, and settings reveal an author’s themes?
They are working hard to read closely in order to analyze characters through their words and
actions. Students are discovering descriptive language and navigating complicated plot lines.
This unit will culminate in an opinion essay in which students will support their opinion with
reasons and evidence pulled directly from the text.
In science, students are learning about landforms. We are working hard in the unit, Moving
Mountains which is designed to teach the basic concepts of landforms, both above and below
water, and water features as they relate to weathering and erosion.
In math, we are finishing the unit on fractions and will soon begin Unit 5. Students have been
working to understand the concept of the whole and the fractional parts as well as apply this
understanding to units of measurement. In Unit 5, we will be focusing on applying operations
with whole numbers. We will continue to work on mastering basic facts of all operations so that
we can combine that knowledge with our understanding of place value in order to multiply using
multiples of 10. This unit will also focus on problem-solving strategies when working on 2-step
problems.
Please remember to look for volunteer sign-up information regarding our Sports Day on June 1st.

4th Grade
In Reading Language Arts, Fourth Grade continues to work towards completing grade level
standards. We have begun reading novels in small groups. Ask your child to summarize the
events of his or her novel (Escaping the Giant Wave, Shooting Kabul, or War With Grandpa.)
Through the novels, we have worked on comprehension and critical thinking questions,
flashbacks, and how the setting has affected the plot. In addition, students have worked on using
text details to support character traits, perspectives, and relationships.
In Math class, fourth grade students are finishing up customary and metric measurement as
then moving into geometry. Have your student help with measuring at home using measurement
tools for capacity in the kitchen or measuring length in customary and metric units.
Our field trip to Historic London Town in Edgewater is quickly approaching. All
permission slips and money are due by May 4th. Students will need to bring a lunch, wear
walking shoes, and dress for the weather. Please remember that we will be returning to school
from the trip on May 11th at 4 PM. Consequently, your child will need a ride home from the
school on that day.
Fourth Grade students will be taking the PARCC test during the week of May 16 th. Please
make sure that your child receives a good night’s sleep and eats breakfast daily.
5th Grade
In ELA this month, we are wrapping up our study of historical fiction by creating book talks that
recommend the historical fiction novels students picked to read. The book talks include a plot overview,
character analysis, and discussion of theme and the narrator. Students are incorporating multimedia
elements to enhance their presentations. We are very excited to share our recommendations!
In Math this month, Ms. Schlanger’s class is beginning their study of area and volume. Mrs. Katherman’s
class is dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Mrs. Price’s class is focusing on customary and metric
unit conversions and problem solving.
At the end of May, the fifth graders along with students from the other feeder schools will be visiting
Hereford Middle School to learn more about the transition to middle school. This is just another exciting
step in their journey towards middle school!

Dear Hereford Zone Neighbor,
My Neighbors Foundation began in January 2007 in order to help students in need in the Hereford Zone
to participate with their peers in school related activities. As our funding increased, in 2012, we started
sponsoring summer camp for students in need. The first year, MNF was able to send 88 students to
camp.
We are looking for potential campers for this summer’s MNF scholarships.

Students must be currently on Free or Reduced Lunch or have special circumstances
(related to financial need).
Students must live in the Hereford Zone.
Applications are only accepted from March through May 30, 2016.
Camp scholarships will be accepted for one week of day or sports camp
Genesee Valley, Camp Puh’tok, HRC and sports camps are the primary camps we are
funding but we are willing to accept applications to other camp programs that are in the
same price range ($350 to $400).
Scholarship opportunities end when allotted funds are used.
