Resa’s Pieces is composed of amateur musicians, ages ranging from their
twenties to nineties from all walks of life. Resa Kochberg, Toronto musician, founded Resa's Pieces in 2000 to fulfill a dream for adults to
“Reawaken That Talent and Rediscover Playing Music.”
The organization has grown from the original 18 members to over 125
"Pieces". Resa's Pieces Concert Band has a big sound with 55 enthusiastic members. Resa's Pieces Strings established in 2010 under the baton
of Ric Giorgi, has 34 dedicated members. Resa's Pieces Singers, led by
conductor Robert Graham, began in April 2013 with 36 excited members. This year also saw the first joint venture between the Concert Band
and the Strings with another of Resa's dreams becoming a reality Resa's Pieces Symphony Orchestra.
All our "Pieces" share in an encouraging, supportive environment that
brings a wonderful sense of accomplishment and so, our second mantra
is “Do Your Best and Have Fun.”
The ensembles enjoy sharing their passion for music at retirement and
nursing homes, hospitals, outdoor public squares and, most recently, in
playing inter-generational concerts within the Toronto District School
Board, where the intent is to inspire both students and their parents to
continue or return to making music.
In addition to the attention that Resa’s Pieces receives from its loyal
fans, the organization has received media recognition from a number of

news outlets: The Wholenote Magazine, The Canadian Jewish News,
North York Mirror and CP24. Most notably in 2010, the CBC Radio aired
an award winning documentary about Resa’s Pieces on Michael Enright’s
show, The Sunday Edition, aptly titled “Watch My Stick…PLEASE!"
The ongoing success and uniqueness of Resa’s Pieces can be attributed
to its Board of Directors, the enthusiasm of all the “Pieces”, the esteemed conductors, and the continuing devotion of the one and only
Resa.

ABOUT RESA
Growing up there was nothing else Resa wanted to do but study music.
After graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, Resa taught as a Band Music Specialist for the Scarborough Board of Education until she put teaching on hold to start a
family. While raising her three children, she had a “cottage industry”
clothing business and taught private piano lessons. Eighteen years later,
Resa returned to teaching for the Toronto District School Board where
she also conducted the Concert Band for Toronto Music Camps and led
workshops as a flute specialist. For three years Resa had the privilege of
conducting and co-conducting the Toronto East All-City Band. During her
18 year hiatus from music, Resa also abandoned her flute and piccolo
and currently plays and performs with the North York Concert Band and
the Encore Band.
Resa’s past fourteen years have been one of her greatest joys as she
shares her love of music with all the dedicated members of Resa’s
Pieces. Along with conducting Resa’s Pieces Concert Band and sharing in
its accomplishments over the years, Resa is delighted that Resa’s Pieces
Strings is flourishing and takes great pride in the establishment of two
new ensembles this year, Resa’s Pieces Symphony Orchestra and Resa’s
Pieces Singers.
In her spare time, Resa, together with Marshall, are devoted grandparents to their five cherished grandchildren.

The President and Gala Chair
Welcome to tonight's performance!
Resa's Pieces is concluding another landmark year as our organization
continues to flourish.
Resa's Pieces now has four ensembles under its umbrella. Resa's Pieces
Concert Band, conducted by Resa Kochberg, boasts 55 members who
can't wait to share tonight’s evening programme with you! Resa's
Pieces Strings, under Ric Giorgi's baton, concluded their third successful
season on June 9th when its 34 members performed their own fabulous
gala programme. Resa's Pieces Symphony Orchestra, conducted by
both Resa and Ric, made its debut that evening. In addition, Resa's
Pieces Singers, conducted by Robert Graham, welcomed 36 vocalists in
an inaugural spring session and we look forward to the Singers first season this September.
Resa’s Pieces ensembles are led with smiles, patience, and ongoing TLC
in a "Do Your Best And Have Fun" atmosphere. Thank you to our esteemed conductors for your dedication and devotion to our ensembles.
Resa's "Pieces" are passionate about our mission of “Reawakening That
Talent and Rediscovering Playing Music". Our members, through their
ongoing commitment, help drive the organization's success with each
"Piece" completing the whole!
Resa’s Pieces is privileged to continue to share our music with the community performing this past year at Baycrest, Sunnybrook and
Sheppard Village. The Concert Band also participated in Jewish Music
Week performing at Nathan Philips Square in May. Next season, Resa's
Pieces will be building on the success of this year's intergenerational
concert that the Band held with students of York Mills Collegiate Institute. Our aim, in developing a relationship with the Toronto District
School Board, is to establish a series of intergenerational concerts to
inspire students to continue playing music after they graduate. As well,

we will be assisting the school communities in their fundraising initiatives as Resa's Pieces will perform gratis so that all dollars raised go directly to support the schools' music departments.
Resa’s Pieces’ accomplishments are backed by a stellar Board of Directors who provides valuable direction and leadership behind the scenes.
My personal gratitude is extended to my fellow Board members for their
hours of volunteering and attention to detail.
Tonight, Resa’s Pieces Concert Band could not be celebrating this evening without YOU! Our entire Resa's Pieces family thanks our many sponsors and loyal patrons for your belief in the Arts and ongoing support
and generosity. It is with your assistance that we are able to strengthen
our vision of enriching others with the gift of music.

Susan Michaels, Artistic Director
Now in its 14th year, under the direction of Susan Michaels, the Renanim
Youth Singers, based in Toronto, is a pluralistic, Jewish community youth
choir. Each member must win an audition in order to participate in this
unique ensemble. Students develop skills and passion for choral music,
an enhanced positive sense of Jewish identity, community involvement
and a love of their rich Judaic heritage.
Known for developing talent at its highest level, Susan Michaels brings a
world of experience to the task. As an award winning high school educator, Susan Michaels was the former conductor of the Scarborough Wind
Ensemble, a group of handpicked elite high school musicians who performed throughout North America. She was also a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir for 17 years.
Referred to as “The Musical Voice of Jewish Youth,” the choir takes pride
in its many accomplishments. Cinematically, Renanim Youth Singers has
been featured in a number of documentaries. It is noteworthy that
Renanim Youth Singers completed a five year recording project which
resulted in the recording of over 130 songs. This coveted project, geared
toward students in grades one through eight, supports and guides teachers world-wide in their instruction of Jewish prayer, songs and culture.
The distribution has been remarkable reaching Jewish educators
throughout North America, Europe and Israel. In addition, the choir recorded two highly acclaimed CDs.
As part of the overall mission, the choir embarked on two separate tours
to Israel. Both times, the travel abroad to Israel was life-changing for
choir members and will be forever embedded in their memories.

After graduating from York University with an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jazz Performance, Sharon embarked on a performance career
that included musical theatre, nightclubs, family
Sharon Smith
and corporate parties, radio and television commercials, live television appearances and liturgical Jewish repertoire in
the synagogue. With the birth of her children, she became interested in
early childhood music and trained to become a teacher. Sharon is currently teaching children music using the Orff method for the Toronto
District School Board.
A versatile performer, Sharon has sung in synagogue choirs, jazz clubs
and restaurants and regularly performs in dinner theatre shows. Recently, Sharon has been performing concerts that feature the music of
Yiddish theatre.
Some of the local bands Sharon has sung with are: A Touch of Class, Music Machine, The Barry Stein Band, The Nova Sounds, The Saul Helman
Band, The Shelley Miller Band, The Starlight Orchestra, Rick Sonata,
George Kash, The Majestics, Replay, The Encore Concert Jazz Band, Big
Smoke Big Band, Don Bowes Big Band, The George Lake Big Band,
Danny's 11 and many others.
Sharon is thrilled to be making her debut with Resa’s Pieces Concert
band this evening.

Avery T-K, age 15, has been studying ballet and
other forms of dance since the age of 2. Avery has
trained at the National Ballet School of Canada,
Joffrey in New York, American Ballet Theatre in
New York and California, the Boston Ballet at Newton and spent over a year living at the Alberta Ballet School. Avery is currently a student of the Atelier School of Ballet, the York School of Dance and
Avery Molly
Tarek-Kaminker the Dance Place where she is an award winning
company member of the "Toronto Dance Machine". She has performed several roles in the National Ballet's Nutcracker at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto and
with the Alberta Ballet at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. An actor and
vocalist as well, in 2010, Avery held the title role in Toronto Youth Theatre's Musical Production of Charlotte's Web where she performed in
black Pointe shoes. Most recently, Avery won a special "On Her Way"
award for her solo at the Be Dance Competitions. Avery is currently a
grade 9 student at Tanenbaum CHAT, Toronto, and teaches dance to little children during her lunch hour. Avery also performs at seniors’ homes
and is excited to train with Joffrey in Los Angeles this summer where she
will be studying under choreography icon Mia Michaels of “So You Think
You Can Dance” fame.
Avery is returning for a second year on stage with Resa's Pieces.
James Terrasi, age 15, has been studying dance
since the age of 9, in a wide variety of styles such as
classical ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, tap, musical
theatre, and hip hop. He has studied at Claude Watson School for the Arts, Cardinal Carter Academy for
the Arts, The Dance Place, and Nexx Level Dance
and Theatre Company. Throughout his years of
dancing, James has performed at venues such as
Massey Hall, Cringan Hall, St. Lawrence Centre for
James Terrasi
the Arts, Harbourfront Centre and the Westin Harbour Castle. He has also made appearances on television series such as
MuchMusic Live and Think Big, and been featured at Dance Ontario’s
Dance Weekend and International Dance Day. Presently, James is
14
studying as a dance major at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts where
he completed a successful run of the Nutcracker this past December. He
is also in his third year dancing at the Dance Place, being part of the
award winning “Toronto’s Dance Machine” company and recently winning the “Marvelous Male Mover” award for his solo at the Luv2Dance
Competition. James is very excited to be on stage for the first time with
Resa’s Pieces this year.
15-year-old Ethan Colangelo is well on his way
to being one of the most impressive male
dancers in Ontario. He is a former student of
Canada's National Ballet School (full time program) and was twice cast as "Misha", the lead
roll in the National Ballet of Canada's Production of The Nutcracker. As a current member
of The Dance Place's "Dance Machine",
Ethan Colangelo
Ethan won several 1st place awards and a
scholarship during the 2013 competition season. Ethan is also an impressive vocal student and performer who joins Resa's Pieces for the first
time.

Synergy Elite Cheerleading is the brainchild of Jane Cogan. Jane wanted
to locate a cheerleading club in the York region area for her daughter
Chelsea to join and there were none. Jane approached Markham Gymnastics Club in 2006 and asked if the club would like a cheerleading team
which she would run under their name. They agreed and at their first
competition, Jane’s little team of 12 cheerleaders achieved first place.
Bitten by the cheer bug, Jane eventually created her own company Synergy Elite All Star Cheerleading Club Inc. in 2007 which is located at
Markham Gymnastics Club in Markham. Since then, the club has tripled
in size and has gathered many wins and awards.
Jane is continuing to grow as a coach and as a business woman with a
focus on creating great athletes and great teams.
