The world first heard from Snoop Doggy Dogg in 1993,
when 22 year-old Calvin Broadus released his debut solo
CD, Doggystyle. The project soared to the top of the
Billboard charts, and the soft-spoken rapper was instantly
on his way.
Broadus would soon be the subject of a short film
and soundtrack, Murder Was the Case, centered
on his fictional death and resurrection. By 1996,
the year of his second CD for Death Row Records,
The Doggfather, the musician’s entrepreneurial
ventures also included his own label, Doggy Style
Records, sporting his own roster of artists.
Never content to settle down, Snoop Dogg (as
he was now called) broke free from Death Row in
1998, signing a new deal with No Limit Records-and making the strongest association yet between
his music and the cannabis community through a
cameo appearance in the Dave Chappelle stoner
comedy, Half Baked. Over the next twenty years,
Snoop would maintain a ubiquitous presence in
movies and television, with appearances ranging
from Starsky and Hutch to his own reality show,
Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood. His latest film
comedy, Mac & Devin Go To High School, with
co-star Wiz Khalifa will be released July 3rd.
www.THE420TIMES.com
Through his music, movies--and some wellpublicized run-ins with the law--Snoop has been
unapologetically associated with the marijuana
movement. In an interview with The 420
Times, he explained why musicians have been
at the forefront of advocacy on the issue, while
other media figures are largely silent. “Music is
one of the purest expressions of love and it’s the
musicians that bring that love to the people,” he
says. “Sometimes they express fun and happiness.
Sometimes they tell the darker side of reality. But,
it’s all love.”
“My nephew, Wiz, is always saying, ‘Weed
is a freedom drug,’ and since making music is a
liberating experience, I think it’s only right that
musicians smoke weed and advocate the freedom
to do so.”
The evolution of Snoop Dogg from rapper to
celebrity endorser to multifaceted businessman

The 420 Times

has led him from the stage and screen to hair care
products, Snoop Dogg house shoes--and even a
soon-to-be unveiled line of handbags the artist is
designing with his wife. “I’ve had a great opportunity
to watch and learn from some of the greats,” he said.
“I learned a lot from Master P. in my time with No
Limit Records. Not only did he give me a place to
make my music, but he also showed me how I could
capitalize on other means to get paid.”
“I mean, look at George Foreman,” Snoop said.
“He was a world champion boxer. But he really got
paid when he put out that Foreman Grill. Same
with Paul Newman and his salad dressing. I’ve
always known that there is more than just music.”
A variety of Snoop-branded projects directly
target smokers and the medical marijuana
community, including, Executive Branch premium
cigarillos and Snoop Dogg rolling papers. There’s
more to come, according to the rapper: “I got
lighters and incense coming out,” he says. “I mean,
soon I’ll have enough to fill up a whole corner store.
Be on the lookout, Jack!”
14
The 420 Times
Issue 33
“Money don’t sleep,” Snoop says, explaining his
philosophy. “You got to do it!”
Snoop says that his advocacy of marijuana has
not been without consequences. “Of course there
has been backlash,” he says. “Ever since I came out
with a record that got people’s attention I have been
the target of a lot of misplaced anger, resentment,
and fear. Lots of people and corporations have tried
pressuring me to be this or that; try and act more or
less this or that. But I know they don’t matter. The
only people that matter are my friends, family--and
of course the fans. They’re the people that love me
unconditionally and they want me to keep being
me.”
A close relationship with his fans remains at
the heart of his business, according to Snoop.
“Everything that I do is an extension of me. That’s
why the fans love it...because it’s real. That’s all
they want from me, whether it’s music, movies, or
merchandise.”
Regarding the music that started his career
www.THE420TIMES.com
and the array of products that bear his signature,
Snoop sees some similarities in the way they get to
market. “First you have to come up with a product
that people want,” he says. “Sometimes it means
improving on an existing product or coming up
with something brand new that they didn’t even
know they wanted it until you introduced it to
them. That’s like the songwriting and recording
process. Then you have to develop that product
further so it’s undeniable to the people. That’s the
mixing and mastering process.”
While the Snoop Dogg line of products may seem
to cover a wide range of uses and interests, they’re
guided by a big vision. “I want people to be able to
walk in a convenience store and go straight to the
SnooperMarket section because that’s where they
know they’ll have access to a unique set of quality
goods,” he says. “And eventually, down the road,
I want a SnooperMarket on every main street in
America and all over the world!”
Like any good businessman, Snoop Dogg doesn’t
lose sight of the business that put him where
he is. His latest film comedy, Mac & Devin Go
to High School, with co-star Wiz Khalifa will be
released on Blu-ray™ and DVD on July 3, 2012.
“It’s coming to a hood near you and it’s bound
to be a smoker nation cult classic--up there with
Friday, Dazed and Confused, Half Baked, etc.,” says
Snoop. From Snoopadelic Films and Anchor Bay
16
The 420 Times
Issue 33
Films, the coming of age story co-stars his nephew,
Wiz Khalifa and is directed by Dylan Brown. “...
Cameos and jokes for days,” he says.
The Mac & Devin soundtrack also features the
current hit, Young, Wild & Free by Dogg and
Khalifa. “It’s the hottest song out there, and I’m
currently closing my set with it,” he says.
Whether it’s creating chart-topping CDs, movies
or products for his own SnooperMarket, Snoop
Dogg has learned a few things along the road
from Long Beach rapper to superstardom. “I get
approached by hundreds of business people and
hustlas. Some legit, some full of shit,” he says. “I’ve
been in this game for over 20 years now so I’ve seen
it all and I knew I’d need to build my team right so
we could handle the demand and make something
of it.”
As an artist, the relationship been Snoop and his
fans is never far from the surface. “My fans love
me so they’re going to love whatever I do,” he
says. “And since I’m always hustling and working
on something new, I can count on my fans to react
one way or another. That’s what’s so amazing about
my fans. I got so much love for them and they got
all that if not more for me. So, when I come with
something new they’ll let me know exactly what
they’re thinking. They don’t hold any punches
because they feel like family. It’s awesome!”

DO COPS GET DRUG TESTED
TOO?
HOW DOES A RAID HAPPEN?
WHERE DOES ALL THAT WEED
END UP?
by Diane Goldstein
The tables are turned for answering questions. Now The
420 Times and their readers ask questions of the police.
Diane Goldstein, of LEAP, gives us the answers from her
experience on the beat.
She promises to tell you the truth, the
whole truth and nothing but the truth,
even if you don’t want to hear it!

Diane Goldstein is a speaker for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP)
and is a 21-year veteran of law enforcement. She retired as a Lieutenant
from the Redondo Beach Police Department, (CA). During her career she
worked and managed a variety of tactical and investigative unit’s including
the department’s Gang Enforcement Team (GET), The Special Investigations
Unit (SIU), and the Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT).
How do police know who to raid? I keep
seeing dispensaries being raided here
and there -- do people narc on them or
do the police actually go in first to the
dispensaries before raiding them?
Personally I think they use a Ouija Board
because there sure doesn’t seem to be any rhyme
or reason from what I can see. But sometimes
there could be other issues like the city where a
dispensary is located just doesn’t like them. So,
instead of designing a smart law that protects
patients’ rights, and appropriately regulates the
business, the city will use its resources to shut
them down. Now other ways could include a
neighborhood complaint because some folks just
can’t wait to medicate until they get home —you
know who you are. Remember, if you smoke in
the car it makes the neighbors mad. Have some
courtesy and don’t ruin it for everyone! But
that’s the mom in me talking not the cop! And
you are correct, I know it’s shocking but there are
people out there that will provide information
on dispensary’s for their own personal gain. So
until we can get a statewide law that is consistent
from city to city, you will continue to see raids, or
dispensaries shut down through a civil process.
Do your part to help, get involved, support

senator and ask, nicely, that they support this
smart bill. I have even included the link to find
your California legislator.

about this.
Only if there union contract will let them! In
California, departments follow the guidelines set
out in a California government code pertaining
to public safety officers and the provisions of
the Memoranda of Understanding between the
local association/union and the city for random
drug testing. So every city is different. Some
cities like San Francisco do, while the city that I
worked for did not. Now in a criminal case, any
drug testing of an officer would have to be via
reasonable suspicion or probable cause.
How much of the police department
works in drug enforcement? I feel like the
drug laws for marijuana are a complete
waste of time and resources. It seems
like their time would be better used
www.THE420TIMES.com
catching drunk drivers, rapists, violent crimes and
burglaries.
My current favorite city is Seattle, why do you ask?
Because they recognized, just like you did, that enforcing
marijuana laws is a waste of time and fiscal resources. They
enacted a municipal code that makes it the lowest priority
both for enforcement and prosecution. I would like to
propose a new game “fantasy government league,” where
we trade elected officials to create the perfect city. I would
start by trading the Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen
Trutanich, for the Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes.
The problem is that I don’t think Seattle wants him either.
This is from the LEAP website (www.leap.cc) and is
listed in the media section under “Drug War at a Glance.”
“In the U.S.’s overburdened criminal justice system,
nearly four of ten murders, six of ten rapes and nine of
ten burglaries go unsolved.” I attribute this directly to
expending critical resources on victimless crimes such as
drug possession. So you are right, I want my cops arresting
real bad guys, not those that use cannabis either for
medical purposes or for adult personal use.
Does marijuana ever go like missing from
evidence? I see large, large amounts of marijuana
being seized sometimes on the news and it seems
pretty insane. And what do they do with all that
weed? Is there some crazy police giant smokeout
that I should know about?
I hate corrupt cop stories, but I would be a liar if I said it
didn’t occur. Yes, marijuana and other drugs do go missing
from agencies across the country. Just Google “corrupt
cop stories” and you will be amazed at the number of
hits your search will find. But since cops are human like
everyone else, they also have the ability to succumb to
the temptation of drugs and money as well. It’s sad, but
most law enforcement leaders don’t acknowledge that
prohibition has fueled the rise in corruption across our
country.
But hey enough of that downer question — let’s move
onto something more fun, like what happens to the weed
sitting in evidence lockers throughout California. I like
the thought of a giant smokeout. It could do wonders for
the personalities of some guys I use to work with, but sadly
at the end of its trip through court all that cannabis is
ordered destroyed by a judge. It then begins its journey from
the evidence locker to a vented and filtered incinerator
or buried in a landfill. I can only imagine there has been
some contact highs as there has to be an
evidence officer or police officer there
until the marijuana has been properly
destroyed.

When it comes to maximizing production,
there is no better choice than a FLIPBOX!
A typical flowering room has lights running for only 12
hours per day. When the lights go off, the ballasts sit
idle for 12 hours. By adding a FLIPBOX to the equation,
when the first cycle ends, the ballast output is switched
to another set of lights in a second bloom room, so you
can keep growing, 24/7. This allows you to double your
light output with the same set of ballasts, on the same
electrical circuits.

their Grand Opening of the inaugural LAgo brand Collective - “INDISPENSABLE:

ACTIVISM AND
ADVOCACY
NO PLANS THIS SUMMER?
GET OUT THERE AND SPREAD THE WORD.
Memorial Day has come and gone, the days have
become longer, and the smell of sunscreen fills the
air – it must be summer! That means we are already
halfway through 2012! Holy Smoke!
by Sarah Diesel
38
The 420 Times
Issue 33
www.THE420TIMES.com
Considering this is an election year, cannabis
activists should make it a point to get informed
and pass on information to others. Music and
art festivals are excellent places you will find
positive people to engage in cannabis conversations
with and be accepting to take literature. Here are some
helpful summer cannabis activism tips to help you spread
the good word about this amazing plant:
First and foremost, educate yourself so you can be an
effective activist and educate others. Drug Policy Alliance,
Americans for Safe Access, and NORML are just a few
of the medical cannabis organizations that have activist
toolkits, outreach materials, handbooks, training manuals
and much more that you can print or read online (which
saves trees — that’s swell). Take some time to go through
and read everything you can. There are suggested books on
some of these sites as well. Stay informed about cannabis
by reading about current events, politics, science, medical
facts and studies — the list goes on and on and it never
ends. No matter how many years experience you have with
advocating medical cannabis, one thing is for sure, we
are always learning something new about this plant every
day. Whether it is a law that has just been passed or a new
scientific study that proves cannabis has medicinal benefits
this information is important to be aware of when talking
to the public.
Next, you must dress the part of a cannabis activist. Sorry,
this does not include cannabis leaf pasties or tie dye shirts.
Dress professionally and respectfully if you plan to discuss
medical cannabis with the public. How can the soccer
moms and politicians ever take us seriously if we dress like
teenagers going to a rave? (There is a time and place for
that; like at a rave!) Even a nice pair of clean shorts without
holes paired with an ironed cannabis organization t-shirt
is just fine. Drug Policy Alliance (www.drugpolicy.org),
Americans for Safe Access (www.americansforsafeaccess.
org) and NORML (www.norml.org) are just a few of the
medical cannabis organizations that have online stores
with responsibly priced, high quality shirts.

ACTIVISM AND
ADVOCACY
Most organizations have flyers or sign-up
sheets available for your own printing to hand
out to the public or hang up in your local coffee
shop. On Americans for Safe Access’ website
(www.americansforsafeaccess.org) click on
Community > Resources for Organizers >
Outreach Materials; here you will find printable
documents such as a pledge for action and a
one-page education outreach sheet.
In the modern world of iPads and
smartphones, you might want to bring them
with you to share amazing cannabis videos such
as Hemp for Victory and Juicing Cannabis both
via YouTube. I’m sure you have some favorite
videos that you can think would be appropriate
cannabis educational material to show people
in public places. You can also have medical
cannabis organization websites open in separate
tabs so you can flip through them and show
people how to get involved. A step further is
to go to the “action alerts” section and have
them fill out any information that is needed.
These action alerts include, but are not limited
to, sending electronic faxes to politicians and
signing petitions. Moreover, these organizations
have email lists folks can join to stay informed.
40
The 420 Times
Issue 33
Here is a suggested checklist of items to bring
with you:
Cannabis organization materials
Clipboard
iPad / smartphone (optional)
Paper notepad
Pens
Water
Sunscreen
Sunglasses (but take them off when talking
to people; this way it is more personal)
Nuts/snack
Being a responsible cannabis activist also
means resisting the temptation to medicate
outside in a public place, even in the beautiful
sunshine of summer. Be sure to always medicate
in a safe place. Happy summer cannabis activists!

BELLY’S
CREAM OF THE CROP REPORT
Nothing to sweat about, Headband is a perfect compliment to
sunny days wherever you are at this June.
MONTH OF JUNE – HEADBAND Price Range: Headband is a cross of OG Kush, Master Kush and Sour
Diesel. The price varies from $250 to about $400 per ounce. It’s less
common, but it’s not impossible to find.
Upon Examination: The buds are rather voluptuous: very full and dense.
Each bud is fat and packed tightly. It has a light green color. Headband
smells sweet, yet spicy and earthy. A very sharp smell, with hints of
lemon, minty almost.
Upon Smoking: Headband is light tasting and gives you a smooth and
mild “thinkers” high. Don’t get me wrong though, the high would be
definitely be considered a strong one by the average smoker. I’m not just
the average smoker. For me it’s the type of weed I could smoke and still
be able to remain focused and get my daily routine and tasks completed.
I’d say it’s definitely a daytime weed for me.
Why do I smoke it: I don’t necessarily look for it, but I smoke it when
it comes around. I enjoy the strong high although it’s a little milder than
the kush I’m used to. It does provide a great high nonetheless.

Heart of Dankness
By Mark Haskell Smith
Novelist Mark Haskell Smith has been reporting for the
Los Angeles Times and some other beats for years – but
after attending the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, he
went on a journey at home to find weed akin to the
“dank” he sampled a the Cup.
Starting as a novice when it comes to how great weed is
grown, Smith encounters a myriad of botanists, farmers,
and connoisseurs of high-grade varieties.
Smith gives anyone who often wonders about how a
variety of marijuana starts, grows and makes it to your
bowl.
This is a quick read that is perfect while sitting outside
this summer — enjoying your own stash.
Smith is the author of four novels, Moist, Delicious, Salty,
and Baked, and has written for film and television. A
contributor to the Los Angeles Times and a contributing
editor to the Los Angeles Review of Books, Smith is an
assistant professor in the MFA program for Writing and
Writing for the Performing Arts at the University of
California, Riverside, Palm Desert Graduate Center.

I-Tal HempWick
The problem with lighters -- besides never finding yours -- is keeping
it lit. With the I-Tal HempWick, all you need to do is simply ignite
the end of the Hemp Wick, and then sit back and enjoy a clean
burning flame; one that lasts as little or as long as you want, and one
that can withstand the windy days outdoors.
The strong flame of the I-Tal HempWick is the perfect solution for
those of you who enjoy smoking your favorite blends outside with
the wind at your back. Whether you smoke glass water pipes and you
need a constant supply of pipe lighters, or you smoke rolled tobacco,
or medicinal herbs, all work with the HempWick.
I-Tal HempWicks also don’t come with all of the chemicals
associated with lighters of plastics or butane.

Cheech & Chong’s Fatty Ganja Comedy App
a Mobile Dispensary of Fun
Available for iOS and Android devices, Cheech and Chong’s newest venture
(where are they not anymore?) is the ultimate app for fans of the comedy duo. Tap
into a top-shelf variety of games, features, sights, sounds, and smells – all wrapped
in a ridiculously interactive design that will make your head spin.
The Fatty features a ton of interactive elements that you can touch, tap, twist, and
explore — either on purpose or not!
It has a clock. Why is this clock better than all other clocks? The time is always
4:20! It’s like that movie with the dude who keeps waking up on the same day, but
way better.
Also you can feed your head with the latest news
and updates from the front line of marijuana reform.
The Chronic pull it’s content from NORML & The
Marijuana Policy Project, so you know the information
is legit.
The apps Kush Notifications remind even the most
loopy the most important details, “Did you remember
to grab that thing for that dude?”
The best feature is the Soundboard feature. Users
can relive their favorite Cheech & Chong moments
with a primo selection of sounds, lines, and classic
phrases from the two pot-riarchs of comedy. Download
additional sound packs and
keep the good times rolling!
FreshStor CVault
FreshStor’s CVault is a handy bud humidor, for ease of
definition. It comes with re-placable “moisture packs”,
with no muss no fuss, you slip the pack out from under
the lid of this cool storage container and slip in another
one. They are good for more than 2 months (mine lasted
longer than the stated life span) and you simply wait for
it to get hard and then replace it. Meanwhile, this shiny
stainless steel container, keeps your stash humidified in
it’s dark and airtight snap-buckle lidded receptacle. This is
an affordable accouterment for the leaf lovers in your life.
There is nothing like guaranteed fresh and fragrant bud to
tuck into after a long day.
