THE ARROW Special Hunters Edition Suffolk archers and bowhunters news letter Editors - Jill Goeckner & Josh Pierno January 2014 Every year many of our members venture off into the woods with their bows in hand to chase down the legendary white tail deer. All come back with great stories and memories, some even come back with a deer. Here are a few of our members who harvested a deer this year, many of them right here on Long Island. Tommy Carrella Spoon Buck Date of Harvest: Nov 2nd County of Harvest: Sullivan Bow: Bowtech Invasion Arrow: Easton Lightspeed BH: Rocket Sidewinder Cameron Carrella—Age 15 First Archery Buck Taken Nov 9th in Sullivan County Bow: Diamond Broadhead:G5 Arrow: Easton Lightspeed Nick Domingo 3rd weekend Oct. 2013 Sullivan county Eight pointer at 15 yards Matthews Helium 100 Grain Muzzy The Carrella’s freezer, what a sight! Christopher Smith October 28th in Suffolk county. Bow: Elite Answer I took this 130" class 10 point from a ghost blind. The buck walked up behind the blind on the exposed side. I had only a shoulder wide clump of vines to hide behind as he walked straight towards me. I had to wait for him to turn and took a 9 yard broad side shot. The buck went about 70 yards. I also took 2 does on the same hunt both within 15 yards of the blind. Starting the day with 6 Doe tags Chris Smith managed to filled 5 of them. I took 5 Doe today on my last hunt of the 2013 Archery season. All within 15 yards of the stand. Plus I watched 4 out of the 5 drop in sight. My son Kiernan accomplished a great tracking job on #5 . There was almost no blood to follow because her lung plugged the exit wound. That's 10 Doe and 2 bucks all taken on Long Island with my bow this season to top off my freezer. 2 I took this abnormally built doe December 15th. She had the largest chest I have ever seen on a Doe. It as 16" from top of her back to bottom. With short stubby legs. She had a live weight if over 140 pounds. I took a 9 yard broad side shot on her and she dropped inside of 50 yards... Elizabeth Waldes 11/13/13 Suffolk county Diamond Core Sharp, pointy muzzy on an Easton arrow forged from the purest carbon harvested by silent monks on my grandparents carbon farm My first deer ever- shot at 15 yards from a ground blind, double lung pass through shot, found 50 yards away. The entire deer was eaten within 5 days... Rex Zachofsky Suffolk County, November 9. Bow: Bowtech Insanity. Broadhead: Wasp Arrow: BroadheadCarbon Express Maxima Blue Streak Diallo Stevens Nov 6th in Suffolk County Bow: Mathews Monster MR6 Broadhead: Rage 2 Blade Mechanical Arrow: Beman ICS Hunter This was my first deer ever! 1st season hunting & 1st deer I saw within range. It was a 30 yd tree stand shot through cover hit double lung. He made it about 15 yards before expiring. I named him Skully and Skully’s delicious grilled! 3 Mike Voltz This nice 8-point buck was taken in Sullivan County on Nov. 10, 1013. I've been hunting the same property for 35 years, but the last decent buck that I took with my bow was in 1994. I've been using the same Martin Lynx compound bow that I bought in 1987. I just joined Suffolk Archers in 2013 and there is no question that the practice and 3D shoots helped me to make the shot count. It was about 6:15 am and I had just climbed into my stand. I actually climbed back down to get something, and within 5 minutes of climbing back up, I hear a deer approaching. He was coming from my right, and at about 30 yards, I could see that he was a legal buck (3-point rule in the area we hunt). I took the shot and caught both lungs. He dropped less than 50 yards from where he was hit. Not the biggest rack, but the deer was very large for that area, weighing in at 155 pounds dressed out. Great to be a member of Suffolk Archers. Steven Principe — with the two bucks he harvested this season. Date of Harvest- 10/10/13 County of Harvest– Suffolk Bow – Matthews Z7 Extreme Broadhead - Ramcat Arrow – Carbon Express Date of Harvest- 11/8/13 County of Harvest- Milan, Missouri Bow – Matthews Z7 Extreme Broadhead – Slick Trick Arrow – Carbon Express 4 John Montiel This nice 8 pointer was taken on Oct. 19, 2013 at my place in the town of Harpersfield, NY. This was my first buck with a bow also. I went up alone that weekend to do some work around the house and had a couple of hours free in the morning to get into the woods. I was in my tree stand at about 8 A.M. when he came down a known buck trail with another smaller buck. He was 15 yards when I drew down with my Bow Tech Destroyer and nailed him with a Rage tipped Easton Flatline arrow. He ran only 20 yards before dropping. I forgot to bring a camera so the only Pictures that I was able to take were with my phone. So no posed picture with me and my bow. I definitely will bring it next time. John and his dad, John Sr. with a doe he took with his rifle. Jocelynn, member Jim Monahan’s granddaughter & her first harvest with a bow. This button buck was taken at 10 yds. Mike Klauber Took this 9 point 185 lb. buck, his first buck with a bow on opening day. This buck was harvested on one of the farms from the SADMC program. 5 Mike Matteo Suffolk County 11/9/13 9point Bowtech Destroyer 350 Grim Reaper Broadhead Goldtip XT hunter 5575 shaft I rattled him in Chasing a spike.
