2012 NESA SCHOLARHIP INFORMATION - Information on the 2012 National Eagle Scout Association scholarship
program has been posted on the "Forms Library" section of the council website. Click here to learn more.
2012 JAMES T. STEPHENS EAGLE SCHOLARSHIP. Information of the 2012 James T. Stephens Eagle Scout
Scholarships has been released. Click here for more information.
EAGLE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS - Eagle Scout rank requirement 5 has been reworded. To support that change, a
new Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook has been created. Through Dec. 31, 2011, Scouts have a choice to use either the
new workbook or the one it is replacing. Scouts whose Eagle Scout service project has already been approved by the council
or district under the former wording of requirement 5—and using the former workbook—should continue with the same
workbook. If their project has not yet been approved by the council or district, they may elect to use the revised requirement 5
and the new workbook. Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Eagle Scout candidates—unless they have already submitted a plan for
approval by the council or district under the former requirement—will be expected to fulfill the revised service project
requirement 5 using the new workbook.

fact, we are already above 70% of our capacity. As many of you know, Camp Comer was at, or slightly above, capacity in
2011. We want you to camp at either of our council camps. Please register and reserve your campsite quickly so that you

EAGLE/UNIT SERVICE PROJECT OPPORTUNITY - Since 1996, the Southern Environmental Center (SEC) at
Birmingham-Southern College has transformed more than 10 vacant/blighted urban lots into community parks and sustainable
landscape demonstration sites (“EcoScapes”). Filled with native plants and local sculpture works, each garden functions as an
outdoor classroom for nearby schools, and as a community gathering place. All of the EcoScapes are contoured to reduce
storm water runoff and three (Seven Springs, Samuelson, & Turkey Creek) are specifically designed to protect endangered
darter fish populations. A number of EcoScapes also serve as gateways to existing or proposed greenway projects like Red
Mountain Park and the Village Creek Greenway.
The community EcoScape program provides a 'natural' outlet for Eagle Scout projects. Recently completed examples include
a fence constructed around the Brown Springs EcoScape pond, a brick path @ BSC EcoScape, as well as nature trails and
park benches @ Turkey Creek EcoScape. With three new EcoScapes currently under design/construction, multiple
opportunities exist for additional Eagle Scout projects. For more information, please contact:

One of our continuing challenges is fulfilling the first goal of the GAC Fast Track program in our Youth Impact Plan: Have
all adult volunteers trained.
Failure to meet this goal delays the registration process. For us, that impacts our unit commissioners and ultimately our units.

LEAVING A LEGACY THROUGH SCOUTING
Zavier Mason of Troop 415, chartered to Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, will soon be relocating with his family to Houston, TX. Before his
departure, Zavier made it his mission to give back to the community before he left. This weekend Zavier completed his Eagle Service
Project in dedication to the Pelham YMCA. The 30 foot octagon shaped structure known as a Gaga Pit was completed on Saturday with
the help of friends, family and scout leaders. Zavier's project added aesthetic appeal and an opportunity for Pelham YMCA goers to
engage in some serious dodge ball fun. Congrats Zavier and thanks for truly leaving your legacy through Scouting!

CHEAHA
District Executive Thomas Ritch email - tritch@1bsa.org
Office - (205) 970-0251 Cell - (256) 452-5135
Hey Cheaha District,
I enjoyed seeing everyone at the Christmas party this past Thursday and hope everyone had a good time. We have a few things to do to
close this 2011 year off with a bang.
First Winter Blast, If you plan on going to winter blast this year please go ahead and register so that they will know how many to expect.
This is very important so that they can make the right plans and set up the right accommodations.
Also we will be setting up a little contest to invite friends to scouting. I have not decided the individual prizes fro this, but for the troop or
pack who invited the most nonscout friends to join I will bring pizzas and drinks for their desired meeting. Also if anyone scout invites 3
friends to join scouting they will receive a prize. I have not decided the prize, but I will make sure that it'll be worth their efforts. So
please announce this to all of your scouts and lets wrap this year up with a bang. the contest will end Dec. 23rd, so lets make this fun
and try to invite some new youth into scouting.
Also there are some merit badge fairs and belt loop fairs coming up in Choccolocco district that you might be interested in. The merit
badge fair will be held at Jacksonville State University January 21st. If you are interested in attending the fair please
visit http://form.jotform.com/form/12652645321 in order to register, also I have attached the flyer. The Weblos activity pin fair will also be
at Jacksonville State University on January 21st, and you can visit the same website to sign up for that too.
If you need anything at all please let me know and I will do my best to get it done.
Thanks,
Thomas Ritch
