Broadcasting Graduation Bulletin 2013
Dear Broadcaster and Media Specialist:
The Electronic Media department’s latest edition of the Vincennes University Graduate
Bulletin features our recent graduates from the VU E-Media-Broadcasting Program.
The 2013 edition includes both the E-Media and Multimedia Communications
graduates. This edition has all the students completing their Associate in Science
degree in May, August, or December 2013. This Graduate Bulletin, along with many
of the previous editions can be accessed on-line by visiting the VU Electronic MediaBroadcasting website at www.vinu.edu/electronicmedia.
The VU E-Media program is a hands-on program beginning with the first week as a
student. The Electronic Media graduates have extensive training in labs and by working
on the university owned and operated radio and television stations. The skills learned
include, but not limited to, audio and video production, writing, sales, web content,
and social networks. Our Multimedia Communications graduates have experience in
graphic design, web development, audio-video production, and writing for media.
This academic year was another year of growth for the E-Media department. With the
guidance of our Advisory Committee, content was updated in each course in their major
to better prepare our graduates for employment. A TVUPack Mini was added to our
high end broadcast quality equipment providing our students with the opportunity to do
live news reports on location for the web and during the live nightly newscast on WVUT.
As an Avid Learning Partner, our students have the opportunity to earn their Avid
Media Composer user certification. Our graduates can also earn their RAB Radio
Marketing Professional Certification.
The Blazer, WVUB-FM radio operates with three HD channels. WVUB was recognized
this year by the Indiana Broadcasters Association with three Spectrum Awards, Station
of the Year, Community Service Award, and Best Promotional Announcement. WVUB
was also nominated for the top honor of Service to Indiana Award. WVUT-DT operates
two television channels, one in HD and one in SD. A third SD channel is scheduled to
air by the fall of 2013.
Our graduates are working in nearly all of the Indiana markets and various markets
throughout the country including some of the national networks. There are VU E-Media
graduates teaching in high schools preparing future media specialists.
Please take a look at this year’s graduates and consider them for employment at your
company. They are well trained and understand the commitment necessary for a
successful career. I invite you to visit our website and we would like the opportunity to
give you a tour of our facilities and to meet our dedicated staff and faculty.
Sincerely,
Jay D. Burks
Electronic Media Chair and Professor

VIDEO PRODUCTION
Students in the Electronic Media program gain video production skills through
structured educational experiences and the production of programming created
for WVUT-HD. Through the combination of staff and students, WVUT-TV 22
produces more hours of local production than most public television stations.
This could not be accomplished without staff and students working together
to complete daily tasks and goals. Students are crew members for a nightly
newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, and other productions
throughout the year.
Students have access to high definition studio and field equipment, including
twenty-four AVID Media Composer editing suites.
21
WVUT-HD
WVUT-HD is Vincennes University’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana
and Southeastern Illinois through the combined efforts of staff and students.
Students are involved daily in all operations of the station.
A daily 30 minute newscast is produced by students and staff. This newscast is
broadcast live at 5:00 pm and re-broadcast at 11:30 pm. This newscast has been
presented with a Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the non-commercial
TV category by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the
news, sports, and weather; shoot and edit stories; switch and direct; and operate
all equipment necessary for the production. WVUT-HD is the first public
digital television station to go on-air in Indiana, broadcasting a high definition
and standard definition schedule daily on 22.1 and 22.2. Studio and remote
productions are in broadcast high definition.
WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,” a public affairs magazine program.
Students work in production crew positions as studio camera operators,
Chyron graphics operators, TelePrompTer operators, audio operators, video
recorder operators, and photographers shooting high definition video. WVUT
operates an HD channel for PBS programming, and a separate SD channel with
programming for PBS Create and the Indiana Channel.
22
AUDIO/RADIO PRODUCTION
In addition to three radio stations, there are eight audio production studios
that contain a variety of professional audio production equipment. In the
VU tradition of “hands-on” training, students learn to operate every piece of
audio equipment in every studio. Students are required to use these studios for
various projects. From our digital audio consoles to our “Adobe Audition” audio
editing software, students learn and practice on the latest audio equipment. The
Electronic Media/Broadcasting Department faculty and staff work directly with
students in both formal and scheduled lab situations.

WVUB-BLAZER 91.1 HD
91.1, WVUB-HD is a Hot Adult Contemporary 50,000 watt Public Radio Station.
WVUB is affiliated with the National Public Radio and American Public Radio
networks. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up to date
information and enable WVUB to provide quality programming to a wide base
of listeners. WVUB broadcasts in HD, allowing two more signals on the same
frequency. WVUB-HD-2 is Blazer Cool Jazz with NPR news, and WVUBHD-3 is Blazer Bilingue, the only Indiana radio station south of Indianapolis
broadcasting in the Spanish language. WVUB won three IBA Spectrum Awards
in 2012. WVUB was recognized as Radio Station of the Year, Community
Service Award, and Best Promotional Announcement.
Students assist professional staff on WVUB. They are supervised and trained by
broadcasting faculty and staff who have strong backgrounds in the commercial
industry. On-air performance, improving communication skills, and keeping
the audience entertained and informed are just some of the goals students work
toward when on-air with WVUB.

INTERNET RADIO
K-NOW streams live from the Vincennes University Website at www.vinu.edu.
K-NOW is operated and programmed by a mix of first and second year students
as they learn how to operate a radio station from the ground up, including
learning to work with a digital automation system. The experience mirrors a real
world progression of skills and training as closely as is possible in an academic
setting. All of the station operations are conducted under the direction and
supervision of faculty.

INTERNSHIPS
Danny Taborn (pictured above) completed an internship with the CBS Network
in New York city during the summer of 2012. With his Avid Editing experience
in the VU E-Media program he was editing promos for CBS This Morning, CBS
Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning, and the 48 Hour Mystery program. He
also attended workshop sessions with Scott Pelly and Gale King. These sessions
included the topic of an effective Enterprise Journalist and script writing.
Each year students in the E-Media and Multimedia programs complete
internships throughout the state of Indiana and the Midwest. This includes
radio and television stations in addition to cable companies. Today’s multimedia
students are working with companies to improve and maintain their websites
and to increase their use of social media.

REMOTES
A variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year,
ranging from men’s and women’s college basketball, political debates, election
returns and “Meet Your Legislator”, to the Miss Vincennes University
Scholarship Program (winner of the Indiana Public Broadcasting “Best
Performance Award”), and the VU Commencement ceremony.
These major remotes utilize a 4-5 camera High Definition remote production
fly-away package, which WVUT utilizes for major remotes. Studios are also
located in the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center and the Vincennes University
P.E. Complex.

MULTIMEDIA
The Multimedia Communications program at Vincennes University is designed
to prepare students for successful entry into the career field of their choice.
Multimedia is the creative union of graphic design, animation, audio, video, and
text, used to produce an informative, eye-catching, audio-visual computer based
presentation. Students will combine artistic ability with technical proficiency
to design and create multimedia products for websites and non broadcast
productions.
Students will work on skills that can be adapted to fit a variety of situations. With
the continuing changes in technology and the business world, people with the
flexibility of multiple skill areas are more likely to make progress in their careers.
Students will take a series of skill building courses needed to effectively operate in
a computer media environment. They complete a set of core courses that includes
audio-video production, photography, web page development, graphic design,
computer aided publishing, multimedia production, and broadcast writing.
Students will choose one area of emphasis to compliment the core skill courses and
provide expertise in a specific career area.
At Vincennes University, we firmly believe in the value of hands-on, real world
experience for students. The Multimedia Communications program is a time
intensive course of study. An internship or capstone project is required for all
Multimedia Communication majors. We stress the importance of good job habits
and developing a strong personal presentation so students can get where they want
to go in their careers.

MEDIA SALES
In sales classes, radio, television, internet, and cable selling techniques are
presented and practiced. The successful Electronic Media/Broadcasting sales
student has a working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating techniques
and uses; local, regional, and national selling differences; and direct and agency
selling skills.
Students who successfully complete their sales courses will be eligible to take the
Radio Marketing Professional exam and become certified by the Radio
Advertising Bureau. Vincennes University Electronic Media/Broadcasting
department is the only university program in the country partnering with the
RAB in this manner. This year’s graduates have additional sales training for
digital media sales.
