From Make Up to Hair Color
For several seasons, the contouring phenomenon has been impossible to ignore. In make-up, this beauty
trend is creating a buzz and now it’s time for contouring to make its way to the hair.
What is hair contouring?
Contouring enhances the shape of the face, playing with shading and highlighting to exaggerate or soften
features. This hair trend, launched by Marc Trinder, is on the cusp of taking over from traditional contouring. The
guidelines are the same: dark shades create shadows and give a visual effect of less volume, while light tones
add highlights and make the hair look more voluminous. All that remains then is to tailor the effects to the shape
of the face for made-to-measure hair.
Darken the top of the head to give the illusion of a
more oval face shape.
Lighten under the jawline to soften angles and
brighten skin tone.
Tip : Ombré and sombré are perfect for this face shape.

salon world was summed up by some form of the words “busy” or “slow.”
• Salons were either busy, very busy, or just plain slow!
• We saw a need to create a platform to start talking “BUSINESS” to create a
place to share business building information and ideas.
• Salons and stylists were beginning to understand…that to advance in their
craft and their art, it wasn’t just about technical – they had to learn about
“good business.” And so, we created Salon Today Magazine in 1983.
• At the time, most thought for sure we would fail, but we did not! We were
able to tap into a huge need to help fulfill our dream in helping our industry
change and grow. We refocused attention away from the technical/artistic
into more lasting and sustainable business ideas.
• Today hairdressers and salon owners are a new, different, and skilled breed… they have
matured and many now think like the true business professionals they have become.
• Their collective success has come through tireless learning, practicing, sharing,
coaching, strategizing, executing, training, and more training!

to follow them they have to turn whats
important to them into a compelling cause
for others to follow. How do you that? Find
out whats most important to you! It has
a name. They are called values. Its what
you use to determine whats right, wrong
and good in your life. Its what makes you
happy. When you are living them the world
(and your team) see the very best of you!
Have them violated and the same world
(same team) sees the very worst of you.
You’ll know... its like sand paper to your
soul when your values are violated. Take

418 values for you to choose. Don’t worry.
Your personal list will be much shorter.
When you go through the list, you’re not
picking what you want your values to be,
you are picking what your values are . You
will have several. Narrow the list down to
10. Its a fun and enlightening exercise.
You will see the world differently. Think of
new glasses or contacts where the world is
crystal clear to you. As human beings we
are most happy when we are living and
having our personal values met. Great
leaders “turn whats important to them
(their values) into a compelling cause for
others to follow”. By gaining this clarity for
yourself it becomes much easier for you to
articulate and it becomes clearer to those
in your world (your team).
If knowing my values motivates me... how
do I motivate my people? Know this: It
is not a leader’s job to motivate their
people. It is there job to not extinguish
their people”s motivation. How do you do
that: Find out what motivates your people.
What motivates them? Same thing that
motivates you... living their values!
How do you find out: Ask them: Share
with them what you have learned and the
difference it has made for you. It has given
you clarity around who you are as a person,
leader, parent and stylist. This clarity has
made me happier. When I am happier I am
the best version of me. Communicate that
you would like to share this gift with them.
Why: Because as a leader you have their
financial, physical and mental commitment.
You need their emotional commitment.
People are emotionally committed when
they are living their values and they are
being supported by those around them.
This emotional commitment is the ultimate
trigger for discretionary performance.
Most companies in the world do not have
their employees emotional commitment
and they don’t know how to get it. You
can’t buy it and you can’t threaten people
into giving it to you (Both strategies have
been used for years... unsuccessfully).
Unfortunately, you do not find out if you
have their emotional commitment until you
need it most. When you are drowning...
terrible time to find out if people on your
boat will want to throw you a life preserver.
