The good news is that we are starting 2009 with Lake Michigan/ Huron water levels at chart datum. That is one foot of water higher than we started in 2008. Our average yearly Northern Michigan snowfall is 117 inches and this year we were over 154 inches. That’s an extra 3 feet of snow. If it brings Lake Michigan and Huron up a foot we’ll take it. catch a problem when your boat is in storage it won’t be able to slow you down during the summer. We promise you a summer season that will rate high on the “fun” meter. There are open houses, barbecues, cruises and rendezvous scheduled between May and September. Check our calendar so you don’t miss any of our planned events. This year our Walstrom Marine August cruise will be headed for Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. While You Were Away Little Traverse Bay Weather Buoy Cross Village Rugworks T he Harbor Springs Harbor Commission is considering whether to partner with the University of Michigan Marine Hydrodynamics Lab (MHL) and help cover the annual operational costs of a weather buoy. It would be located at the head of Little Traverse Bay. U of M has the funding for the buoy, but needs assistance to cover the maintenance. They are looking for area contributions. A new weather buoy has been added at the head of Grand Traverse Bay. This will appear on the NOAA web site as Station 45020. You can look at all of the NOAA buoys at: www.ndbc.noaa.gov. On our web site under ‘links of interest’ we have the link to the buoy located East of Washington Island. This is buoy number 45002. Boaters commonly use this link to see the weather to the West of Harbor Springs. For further information regarding a Little Traverse Bay Weather Buoy, contact the Harbor Springs Harbor Commission c/o the City of Harbor Springs. Jim Bartlett is their Chairman. T here is one more reason to drive the beautiful Tunnel of Trees to Cross Village this summer, as the new non-profit organization, Cross Village Rugworks, will be working looms and welcoming visitors. Located directly across from Legs Inn, the beautiful yarn, multiple looms and spinning wheels—and of course, the finished rugs—take visitors back in time. In addition to the artistry and information (the Rugworks was created with the history and culture of the area at the root of its mission), the organization is also dedicated to developing a sustainable local economy, and providing training for local residents that are in need of a viable trade. One of the most exciting artistic options Cross Village Rugworks artisans is offering are punch hook rugs designed after photographs that customers provide. The master artisans are able to recreate images like cottages, pets—and best of all— boats, in great detail. For more information on this unique opportunity, call the Cross Village Rugworks (231) 526-7849. No passport, no entry. As of June 1, 2009, you will be required to show an up-to-date U.S. passport to enter the United States from Canada. This new rule applies to everyone, regardless of age. So if you plan to travel to Canada this summer, you'll need a valid U.S. passport book or a U.S. passport card. You can purchase a passport at any U.S. Post Office, but you must apply in person. If you live in Emmet County, you can choose to apply at the office of the County Clerk, 200 Division Street in Petoskey. Family members taught her to hunt and fish and family friends took her boating on the Mississippi River and Lake of the Ozarks. On school vacations, she and her parents traveled extensively. The year round warm weather, boating and the horse industry drew her to make her residence in Ft. Lauderdale, FL as an adult. She met and married Jack there in 1969. Two of her boats were in the canal that was their backyard. An only child for two sets of parents, (Ceejay ran the boats but Jack wanted a Ceejay spent weekends on family farms professional crew.) learning the responsibilities of livestock care, including her beloved horses. Ownership of several other boats oth Jack and Ceejay were born in St. Louis County, Missouri. Ceejay grew up and graduated from high school there. She then graduated from Principia College, Elsah, Illinois. Jack lived in St. Louis County for his formative years, but moved to Fort Lauderdale for high school, where his younger brother ferried Jack around the waterways in the family boat. Jack graduated from Duke University, Durham, NC. 8 followed until the couple built a 75' Hatteras, which they named the Social Director. They traveled to New Bern, NC every other month during the build, which was a fun project for interior designer Jack and boat-lover Ceejay. This boat transports them from Florida to Michigan and back again on a three week trip. The northbound trip combines Intracoastal and ocean travel until New York City, where the boat goes up the Hudson River before entering the Erie Canal. Exiting in Oswego, NY, the boat then runs Lakes Ontario, Erie, St. Clair, Huron and Lake Michigan to Harbor Springs. The southbound trip often copies the northbound in reverse but when conditions are right, the boat will travel south via the midwest river system (Chicago, Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, Black Warrior, etc.) to the Gulf of Mexico. Florida rivers then take it into and out of Lake Okeechobee to its dock in Martin County, FL. Jack and Ceejay and guests spent time on the flybridge, aft deck, main salon, bow seat and pilot house while under way and in their staterooms overnight. It is a privileged chance to see this country from the water, at a slower pace than driving or flying. Now that Ceejay has semi-retired from her 30 years of building and teaching at Black Forest Farm and Black Forest Hall, in Michigan, she and Jack use the boat for social and charitable activities and for at least one summer boat trip, often the Walstrom Cruise. In both Michigan and in Florida, Jack has been a fundraising chairman and party host at the Heckenberg’s homes for many charities, including Florida Oceanographic Society, Elliott Museum, Martin Memorial Hospital, Hospice, Christ Child Society, Little Traverse Conservancy, Harbor Springs Child Care, American Heart Association, etc. Through Black Forest, Ceejay still helps young people and acts as mentor to those in horse management and riding/training careers. Following her lead, many of her students combine horse and charitable interests. She also oversees Black Forest South in Ocala, FL, a thoroughbred breeding farm with a riding ring on it. Former Harborites Kerri and Mitch Szegi manage that farm and the charitable activities that Black Forest supports in Ocala. In the summers, you'll find Ceejay at Black Forest Hall doing volunteer work or at Black Forest Farm doing farm maintenance. Besides horses, young people and boating, Ceejay's other interests include rose and orchid care, dog walking, reading and spending time with Jack in their homes and yards. w a l s t ro m. c o m 9 By Kim Ridings N orthern Michigan and boating, they just seem to go together. I love striking up a conversation and have it turn toward boating adventures as conversations invariably do when we are up north. Captain Kim here from the yacht Moonbeam. Moonbeam is the Tiara Coronet with the forest green hull that cruises Little Traverse Bay most every weekend from May to September. It is a great boat and I have had a lot of fun learning to drive it. Of course, when I was learning not only did I have the coaching from my husband, Jeff, Moonbeam’s First Mate, who is very unflappable, but many times there was a lot of coaching from the docks that was much appreciated! Calls of, “Forward starboard!” “Forward port!” “Slow!” “Careful!” and other advice made my initial attempts at docking that much smoother. were in the boathouse. He said to his son, “Look, Mommy is driving the boat.” I chuckled and replied, “That’s because it is Mommy’s boat!” gas dock. Even though so many of you make backing into a slip look so easy, you will not see me attempting to do that with Moonshadow. The reason we got the second boat is twofold. First, it is fast and fun to take out on little jaunts to Bay Harbor and Charlevoix or just cruise the bay. Secondly, though I do “drive” Moonshadow while we are under way, I was not confident that I could dock it if Jeff was not able to. This was particularly evident one fine fall day at the end of the season when I tried to pull Moonshadow into one of the large slips at the gas dock. Luckily, my dock coaches were not in the marina and Jeff was as unflappable as ever. Did you know that it is almost possible to get a 58 foot Sea Ray sideways in one of those slips? It was quite a day! On Moonshadow I am First Mate. Please do not think that this position is not significant. Quite the opposite is true. I am the periodic driver of this fine vessel. I am in charge of lines and fenders when docking. I am even the person on the bow lassoing pilings on Mackinac Island and that is quite a sight! Perhaps my most important function is back-up navigator. The position of back-up navigator was established several years ago after a trip to the North Channel. Moonshadow left Cheboygan in the early morning hours just after dawn to cross Lake Huron and navigate False Detour to the North Channel. About half way across Lake Huron several things Since my experience with Moonbeam happened: first, the waves kicked up; Many people are surprised to see me I am confident that I could drive secondly, the GPS screen went from captaining the boat. As a matter of Moonshadow as far as I needed to a great display showing the location fact, last summer a visitor and his son and at least be able to pull up to the of the boat against the backdrop of a 10 w alstrom.com Continued on pg 42 110 E. As you turn your boat to head towards Walstrom Marine’s fuel dock, you wonder what you can do to make the fueling process easier, so you can return to enjoying the sun, waves, and your boat. Well, we thought we would share some tips that make fueling easier for you. • When possible RADIO AHEAD. This lets us know you are coming our way and is also a good time to tell us if you are alone on the boat and will require additional help docking. Now is a good time to think about which side of the boat you want tied to the dock. The reason this can be important is because sometimes you may want a pump-out as well as fuel. So put the side of the boat on the dock that has the pump-out and fuel fill. This can make the fuel dock process faster and easier for all. • When you’ve arrived make sure lines are in place, boat is secure and ample fenders are set. This process can be very important for everyone’s safety. From here the fueling process is usually painless and straightforward for us. • We prefer to have the captain remain with the boat during its stay at the dock. Should a problem arise or questions need to be answered, the captain is “on deck.” • Mutually we must confirm your fuel choice. We usually know but a reminder never hurts. Be aware of how much fuel you will be taking on, remember that we prefer to fuel a boat to only ninety percent or 7/8. This helps prevent spills and keeps the water cleaner. • Sales receipt signature, it is very important to sign your sales receipt before you leave. • Use a blower after your boat is fueled and before startup. We will try to make your fuel dock experience efficient, safe and fun. We are always available to help and learn what we can do to make your day at the fuel dock better. As always we appreciate your time, your business, and wish you safe and fun-filled boating. HERE’S TO FANTASTIC BOATING IN 2009! w a l s t ro m. c o m 13 News from Rivertown! Cheboygan River Dockage at Walstrom Marine By Joe Kuchnicki O ur docks in the Cheboygan River offer many advantages to boaters. The slips are more private than multi-boat dockage basins. Vehicle parking is very close to most slips. No long walks to your boat which makes loading and unloading much less of a chore. Relatively low river traffic provides a feeling of participation in a real marine environment. Ice breaker Mackinaw is located downstream and often photographed by folks visiting the river for the first time. We have modern, clean washrooms with laundry, showers, and ice. Downtown restaurants, pubs, ice cream, shopping, theatre, and much more are only a 5 minute walk away on well-lit streets. Our dockage customers also benefit from: • Close to great boating destinations ranging from the Inland Waterway and the North Channel. • Ferry to Bois Blanc Island right across the bridge. • Car rental valet service provided by local dealerships. • Shuttle available to various points in northern Michigan. • Local cab service is available. • Cheboygan airport 5 minutes away by car. • Pellston Regional Airport is less than ½ hour away. • 9 miles from I-75 exit. • 16 miles to Mackinaw City. It’s also noteworthy that the City of Cheboygan is very interested in making time spent here a great experience. There are many summer activities planned each season by the Chamber. Supporting Great Lakes boating and Walstrom Marine for 20 years. www.globalmarineinsurance.com Tip of the Mitt By Jennifer McKay I n 2008, the Great Lakes experienced a historic victory with the Great Lakes Compact signed into law. The Compact is a regional agreement that promotes water conservation, protects the lakes from harmful withdrawals, and bans diversions. This achievement dealt with water quantity — now in 2009, we move the focus to water quality. We have already seen significant progress towards addressing water quality and the health of the Great Lakes. President Obama included an unprecedented investment of $475 million in his Fiscal Year 2010 Budget to restore the Great Lakes — an effort that is key to creating jobs and growing our economy. This investment is a major victory for the Great Lakes, and represents the largest, most serious commitment to Great Lakes restoration in a President’s Budget in history. The funding would target problems such as invasive species, runoff pollution, degraded wildlife habitat, and contaminated sediment. During his campaign, Obama pledged $5 billion toward implementing a restoration wish list released in December 2005 by the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration, a partnership of government agencies and advocacy groups. Including $475 million in new funding is a way to start following up on that commitment and is a terrific down payment on Great Lakes restoration and protection efforts. Still to come is the battle for congressional approval, which is certain to be fierce as the Great Lakes package competes with other priorities at a time of soaring deficits and an economic recession. Members of Congress ultimately hold the purse strings for the federal government through the annual appropriations process, so it is critical they match the President’s initiative in their own budget resolution and appropriations to restore this treasured resource. Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council will be working with our members of Congress to ensure that our nation invests in the Great Lakes — to restore the lakes and revive our economy. We are always looking for individuals willing to be champions for the Great Lakes that will receive important information on the progress of Great Lakes Restoration and who can be called upon for action when necessary. If you are interested in becoming a Great Lakes Champion or learning more about Great Lakes Restoration and Protection, contact Jennifer McKay or Grenetta Thomassey at 231-347-1181. Medical Advice for Mariners W ith boating season right around the corner, one thing that should be on every boater’s checklist is maintaining an appropriate first aid kit, as well as some basic preparedness knowledge and training, should a medical condition arise onboard. Besides the usual sunscreen and lip balm, insect repellant, and Aloe Vera Gel, what else is helpful onboard for the initial treatment of both minor and major emergencies? The answer is highly subjective. Captain and crew training, level of comfort in dealing with an injury or illness, as well as the vessel and itinerary will all factor into the determination of the appropriate equipment and response. To begin with, there are many first aid kits available through local retailers, boat manufacturers, local EMS Agencies, as well as national agencies such as the American Red Cross and Divers Alert Network. Another reputable company is Adventure Medical Kits, who have a wide range of kits based on duration of trip, number of passengers, type of vessel, etc. Some basic supplies worth considering in a kit would be the following: a 22 By Dr. Kal Attie thermometer, a reliable pair of trauma scissors, ice packs, and a blanket or emergency reflective wrap for potential hypothermic conditions. In addition to various sizes of band aids for scrapes and cuts to the skin, a supply of wound closure strips and sterile compresses for bleeding control would be useful, as well as a source of sterile or clean water or saline (NOT ocean or lake water) for the initial cleaning of wounds, which is paramount to helping prevent infections. Hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol for deep wound cleansing and irrigation is usually NOT recommended for this purpose. Antibiotic ointment and sterile gauze bandages would be very useful as well as a pair of sterile gloves (preferably non-latex if available so as to avoid any potential allergic reactions in susceptible individuals). Nose clips for the treatment of nosebleeds, and Ace Wraps and splinting materials for the treatment of sprains and possible fractures are a nice addition. The SAM Splint is a user-friendly, commercially available product that doesn’t take up much space and can be easily applied for sprains and broken bones until definitive care is achieved. w alstrom.com In regards to medications, there are some basic ones I like to keep readily available. Aspirin for potential chest pain scenarios, Benadryl for allergic reactions, hydrocortisone cream for skin irritations, motion sickness tablets like Dramamine or Antivert, scopolamine patches (with the caveat that these meds are always more effective as a preventative therapy rather than once symptoms have progressed), and oral glucose gel for low blood sugar. Before taking or administering any medications, always consult with your primary healthcare provider and remember even these simple meds have potential serious side effects and must be used with caution especially with infants, children, pregnant or nursing women, as well as patients with other pre-existing medical conditions. More advanced equipment that could be potentially life saving would be CPR masks and faceshields, an onboard oxygen supply, and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are used to analyze the cardiac rhythms in sudden cardiac arrest, and if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to treat the lethal arrhythmia and help restore normal rhythm and blood flow. It must be emphasized, however, that the use of an AED is only one link in some of the critical steps in treating sudden cardiac arrest, and needs to be followed by early advanced cardiac life support (i.e. EMS and hospital care). The use of this equipment requires the proper training (courses in CPR, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and AED training are readily available through the American Red Cross and/or the American Heart Association.) With a few hours of training, non-medical personnel can learn to operate an AED safely and effectively, and these devices have been proven to save lives in outof-hospital cardiac arrest. Cost varies by manufacturer, but the current average price for these units is around $2000. and if possible the names and numbers of primary health care providers. This information can be very helpful to EMS personnel and emergency department staff upon further evaluation and treatment. Just as important as the equipment, is a good contingency plan for any potential medical emergency. Ensuring a reliable source of communication with a back up source (radio, cell phone, satellite phone) as well as a list of emergency numbers and contacts is crucial to any response. Also ensure that all carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Keep documentation of any pre-existing medical condition of anyone onboard, as well as a list of allergies, medications, Kal A. Attie, M.D. This is a short summary of potentially useful items and training recommendations and is by no means all encompassing. Please talk to your health care provider before purchasing or using any of the above mentioned supplies and seek proper guidance. Boat Owners Beware! A By Patrick Shirley There are Dangers Associated with Ethanol-Blend Gasoline s a boat owner, it is crucial that you understand the dangers associated with the use of Ethanol-Blend Gasoline (E10). E10 has been used in marinas from coast to coast and most boat owners are unsuspecting and not aware of the precautions needed to make their boats safe. If E10 is the only fueling option available, see your local marine service center for usage information. It is important to understand the contents of E10. E10 is gasoline with 10-percent ethanol alcohol added. Ethanol alcohol is made from corn, sugar and other grains. E10 is a great cleanser, solvent and anti-freeze. The alcohol in E10 is also a great absorber of water. Now let me explain the noted and verified problems that arise when using E10. As more people use E10 in their boats, the problems are becoming more apparent and are well documented. Listed below are some of the many documented problems seen with the use of E10. • Stalling, prematurely worn engine parts, rusting, clogging of fuel filters and carburetor jets, release of gunk and sludge throughout the engine, frequent water-contamination/phase separation of fuel, and the eventual engine breakdown. 26 • Ethanol can cause a motor to run lean on fuel, due to the water in the fuel, and vapor lock can occur. Other performance issues may be stalling, misfire, hesitation, and difficulty maintaining slower speeds. • Boaters often store their boats for longer than 90 days. Due to the instability of E10, the shelf-life is less than three months. • Boat engines live in a water environment. Alcohol loves to absorb water, which will cause premature rusting. • Older boat engines (most boats produced before 1992) are not designed to withstand the use of E10. Their rubber and plastic parts and fiberglass fuel tanks are not compatible. E10 can eat away at these parts causing fuel to leak into the bilge. This could possibly cause a fire. Knowing the problems that may occur is only the first step towards a solution. To fully prevent E10 issues, simply do not use E10. Prevention is your best weapon. If you trailer your boat to a gas station, and E10 is the only fuel offered, find another gas station or fuel source. Here at the Walstrom Marine fuel dock we use no E10. Our gasoline is 89 Octane with Valvtect. Having Valvtect in your fuel will improve fuel economy, fuel lubricity, reduce smoke and emissions, and extend engine life. www.HatterasYachts.com The Hatteras 60 Motor Yacht offers sleek, contemporary lines without compromising the virtues that bring pleasure to yachting — an open layout, world-class fit and finish, a rock-solid hull and dependable performance. We have also added some great new lines for 2009, such as Karen Kane and we will be expanding our Lilly Pulitzer offerings to the Harbor Springs store.” “While our stores are influenced by the resort lifestyle, we do not let it define us,” Gray said. “Although we do offer a great resortwear collection, Propellers also include easy styles such as casual basics and dressier styles such as work attire. There is something for everyone here. As always, we do a great deal of business with our men’s and ladies’ denim and khaki pants.” Both Propellers stores are increasing volume in their “business casual” offerings, such as men’s wrinkle-free dress shirts and neckwear. Propellers also stocks an abundance of accessory items such as deck shoes, hand bags, belts, hats, watches and sunglasses. “Everyone loves to accessorize,” Gray said. “We try to pick accessories that coordinate back to our clothing lines and fit the lifestyle we are catering to.” Reputable brands like Sperry, Vera Bradley, Brighton, Swiss Army and Smith are all available at Propellers. Within weeks, these dynamic women had created a company, named after Barbara’s mother, capable of marketing and manufacturing t h e i r cleverly designed products. The demand for these unique handbags and luggage items has grown and so has Vera Bradley, which is now nationally and internationally recognized. V V Care and Maintenance T Cablemaster he Glendenning Cablemaster has become a popular addition to more and more boats, and has proven reliable with a minimal amount of care. There are a few things you can do to help keep the unit running reliably, without having to spend more than a few minutes on upkeep once in a while. By far, the most common complaint we receive is that the cable will not pay out or retract properly. In 99-percent of these instances, the cable has never been fully paid out and untwisted or allowed to relax in the sun before it is retracted. Because of the way the cable is retracted/paid out, the cable will twist but will not straighten itself out without a little help on your part. Here are a few tips to remember: 1) Experience has shown that when only a short section of cable is regularly used, the cable may be subjected to sharper than normal coiling which, in turn, causes undue kinking of the cable. To help relieve this, occasionally pay the cable out fully and stretch it out on any smooth surface. It is best to do this on a nice sunny day as it allows the cable to “relax” a bit. Then retract the cable, allowing the Cablemaster to pull the cable into the storage area. 2) While the cable is laid out, this is the perfect time to inspect the outer jacket of the cable for any nicks or cuts. If the cable is dirty, do not use any cleaners that will leave a waxy or slippery film on the cable as this may cause slippage of the Cablemaster’s main pulley. If cleaning is necessary, Glendenning recommends a mild soap and water solution to clean your cable. 3) Once in a while, take a look at the plugs themselves and check for any loose tangs or burn marks, indicating that there has been some arcing going on in the plugs. 4) If the cable does become twisted and knotted, it takes a bit of perseverance, but it can be corrected. As you pay out whatever cable will come out, try to untwist the cable as it is coming out. You may have to run the cable in and out several times, but every time you pull the cable out while untwisting, you should slowly gain on it and get it all out. 5) There are instances where the cable has been worked to the point where the jacket of the cable has been stretched, and it appears as if it were shrunk over the interior wires. If this happens, in most instances the cord will have to be replaced, as the pulleys cannot be adjusted tight enough to grab the smaller diameter of the stretched cable. In the event you cannot get the cable retracted when you are away from home, please make sure the cable is coiled and secured somehow to prevent the cable from falling off of the boat while under way. It probably wouldn’t do the Cablemaster any good to test its holding power while cruising at 25 or so knots, although after the repairs are made, it could become a good story to share over a cold drink in the future. If there are other problems, please feel free to call the Walstrom Marine Service Department, and we will do our best to get someone to look at it as soon as possible.
