2015 i 2016 season - Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
The Best of Rufus Wainwright Mahler fest Quar tetto Gelato Andriana Chuchman 2015 I 2 016 SEASON A Symphony Begins at the Push of a Button. Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg is a proud sponsor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg, 2554 Portage Avenue, 204.667.2467, www.winnipeg.mercedes-benz.ca Welcome to our 2015-2016 season! As Artistic Director of your Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra every year is special to me, yet this season is particularly meaningful as it marks my 10th season. Yes! Ten absolutely wonderful years with the WSO, the best orchestra in the world, and with you, the best audience in the world. In those ten years my family and I not only got 'used' to the Manitoba lifestyle with its extremes of space, temperature and culture, we fell in love with it and now call it our home. In those ten years the orchestra started a summer season, started El Sistema Winnipeg, performed at the National Arts Center in Ottawa and in Carnegie Hall, recorded several CDs, gave the Manitoba premieres of Mahler Symphonies No. 6 and 7, had meaningful and creative collaborations with the Icelandic community, the Jewish community, the Chinese, Ukrainian, Filipino and First Nations communities, and I got a new podium! Ten years of New Music Festivals: controversial, new, fun. Tchaikovsky, Nordic and now Mahler festivals. Ten years of bringing the best in the classical and popular music scene to Winnipeg, ten years of making music meaningful, emotionally stirring, utterly fun, profound and spiritual. Now, this season, I invite you to hear your critically acclaimed orchestra with some of the most beautiful works ever written. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Sibelius 5 and Orff’s Carmina Burana. We continue our passion for the big German romantic repertoire with a Mahler festival and his Symphonies No. 2 and 10 (another Manitoba premiere), and the performance of Bruckner Symphony No. 4. The Art of Time Ensemble joins us to reimagine one of The Beatle’s most iconic albums, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, we will play with Rufus Wainwright, Quartetto Gelato returns and we present Disney Fantasia. It will be absolutely thrilling and exciting and I can't wait to conduct for you and celebrate with you in my 10th anniversary season! You know the stormy Fifth. Experience the sunny Fourth - no less great in its own way. And to open, a stirring drama in music by the greatest opera composer after Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi. > wso.ca/umi 30 31 At the time of his death Mahler had completed two movements of his Tenth Symphony and sketched the remaining movements. A performing version was made by Deryck Cooke: “a masterpiece of reconstruction,” Neville Cardus wrote in The Guardian “sounding the voice of Mahler and of nobody else.” We are proud to present a WSO premiere, hosted by the eminent writer and Mahler scholar Norman Lebrecht. > wso.ca/mahler10 04 05 Mahler: Symphony No. 10 Handel’s Glorious Messiah Monica Huisman “Umi Garrett’s amazing playing may well have duplicated the effect felt by European audiences encountering Mozart in his earliest prodigy years,” wrote a reviewer at one of Umi’s recent concerts. What better a work then to welcome Umi back to the WSO than a concerto from the master himself, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mahler’s 10 th: The Last Word “The Tenth exists as Mahler’s last word. It reveals Mahler, in his favored metaphor, wrestling with his angel, refusing to let go without a blessing… No knowledge of Mahler is complete without the live experience of his Tenth Symphony.” 25 26 OCT “The power of her tiny hands on the keys was mesmerizing. ‘Genius’ seems the best description.” - Bill Clark, Columbia Daily Tribune Marcelo Lehninger SEP Umi Garrett: Piano Prodigy DEC Classics SERIES A Nothing transmits the urge to sing more than Handel’s Messiah. The WSO tradition continues, as the special glow of the season comes alive with Handel’s matchless sense of timing and drama, where the music’s memorable path from darkness to light never fails to inspire. The Hallelujah Chorus, the ongoing flow of beautiful arias, ensembles and magnificent choruses have made Messiah immortal. We welcome a splendid cast of soloists under the direction of Case Scaglione, the New York Philharmonic’s new associate conductor, in his WSO debut. > wso.ca/messiah FEB Gwen Hoebig plays Symphonie espagnole Mei-Ann Chen, conductor Gwen Hoebig, violin An-Lun Huang: Saibei Dance Lalo: Symphonie espagnole Sibelius: Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major > Carmina Burana - The Washington Post Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Andriana Chuchman, soprano Adam Sperry, tenor Cameron McPhail, baritone Mennonite Festival Chorus Canadian Mennonite University Chorus Winnipeg Boys’ Choir Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Alain Lefèvre, piano *Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra *Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 4 (1926 original version) Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor Mei-Ann Chen Umi Garrett Canadian composer Larysa Kuzmenko has been likened to film composers John Williams and Danny Elfman for her vivid imagination. We present her newest work Golden Harvest, an oratorio celebrating the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. Rising international opera star and Winnipeg native Andriana Chuchman is featured in both works. > Russian Fireworks: Tchaikovsky 5 & Rachmaninoff 4 - Véronique Robert, L'actualité 18 19 Lovely, lusty and endlessly theatrical, Carmina Burana lifts you out of your seat and never lets you go! An audience favourite, its huge forces hold nothing back mixing medieval-Latin lyrics, Christian piety and earthly delights. Larysa Kuzmenko: Golden Harvest Orff: Carmina Burana “Alain Lefèvre knows what to do with Rachmaninoff’s works, the Russian composer often dubbed as ‘the last great romantic.’ Lefèvre dazzles and, most of all, moves...” wso.ca/hoebig wso.ca/carmina APR “Chuchman had a full, sure, glorious sound you wanted to sink into” Gwen Hoebig Jean Sibelius – the most original symphonic voice since Beethoven! We mark the 150th anniversary of his birth with one of his most heroic statements, the Fifth Symphony. Known for its otherworldly horn-calls and triumphant finale, it is in Donald Francis Tovey’s words “Thor swinging the hammer.” MAR - The Adresseavisen (Trondheim, Norway) Guest conductor Mei-Ann Chen delivers one of Sibelius’ most popular symphonies and a blast of Mediterranean melody in her WSO debut. Is there music with sunnier melody and higher spirits than Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole? WSO’s brilliant concertmaster Gwen Hoebig reveals the music’s fragrant tunes and Spanish tang with flair. Classics SERIES A “Chen was totally convincing as a conductor full of surplus energy… it seemed hardly possible to get any closer to perfection.” 05 06 15 16 Andriana Chuchman Classics Series A Concert Times La Presse called Alain Lefèvre a “knight on a mission,” going on to say “for all the music lovers present, the pianist is the hero...the alchemy has worked its magic.” Rachmaninoff, too, works magic in his renowned piano concertos. Alain performs the original version of the composer’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Tchaikovsky! Unforgettable melody and profound drama are at the core of his Fifth Symphony, among the composer’s most personal statements. The Winnipeg Youth Orchestra joins forces with the WSO to open this exciting program with in Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. > _________________ FRI @ 8:00 pm SAT @ 8:00 pm SUBSCRIBE TODAY $558 $468 $378 $288 $186 Adults / 6 Concerts I See Page 19 Alain Lefèvre Classics A Series Sponsor: wso.ca/lefevre 204-949-3999 I wso.ca 5 Tianwa Yang: Passion of the Violin “The most important violinist to come on the scene in many a year.” - Detroit News Alexander Micklelthwate, conductor Tianwa Yang, violin Tianwa Yang Rossini: Overture to Semiramide Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1 Ravel: Mother Goose Suite Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio espagnole SEP Classics SERIES B 18 19 Music lovers know Tianwa Yang for her 18 top-selling Naxos recordings and acclaimed appearances with leading orchestras and conductors. Tianwa performs Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a high-wire-act full of beautiful Italian melody from this master violinist/composer whose skills were thought to come from the devil himself in a program filled with music by some of the world’s greatest orchestrators. “In (Mahler’s) music there is everything. You find nature, sarcasm, love, hatred, the grotesque, tragedy, comedy…every listener can find something to relate to.” Emilia Boteva - Mariss Jansons, Gramophone Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Lara Ciekiewicz, soprano Emilia Boteva, mezzo-soprano Mennonite Festival Chorus Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir 23 24 Our week-long Mahlerfest, devoted to the life and work of Gustav Mahler, opens with one of his most unforgettable works, the Resurrection Symphony. Mahler tackles the big questions: What is life? Why are we living? What comes next? He answers the quest in his Resurrection Symphony: a life-affirming journey through human joys and travails, with a transcendent finale inviting the start of a new and different life, a life without judgment, where everyone is equal. In the words of Norman Lebrecht: “More than any other symphony Mahler’s Second acquired a mythical dimension, defining the lives of those who embraced it.” > wso.ca/mahler2 NOV Mahler’s 2nd: Resurrection OCT >+ wso.ca/tianwa 13 14 Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor (Resurrection) Let the Trumpets Resound “[Burgstaller] enthralled the audience with an almost unbelievable mastery of his instrument...” Every now and then an artist comes along who seems to transcend human limits to communicate straight from the soul. Trumpetist Joe Burgstaller is just such a musician and will kick off our first-ever Trumpet Festival, with Hummel’s famed concerto like you’ve never heard it before. - The Lancaster Intelligencer Journal (PA) Jean-Marie Zeitouni, conductor Joe Burgstaller, trumpet David Moroz, piano Joe Burgstaller 6 2015 I 2016 Season John Estacio: Brio: Toccata and Fantasy for Orchestra Hummel: Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major Stravinsky: Petrushka (1947 version) Stravinsky’s Petrushka also features the trumpet in its entertaining narrative of a puppet suddenly endowed with life, enhanced here with screen images depicting the music’s story. Canadian composer John Estacio’s Brio is a cinematic treat and a perfect opener for this evening of vivid and visual music. > wso.ca/burgstaller Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn Mozart: Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, K. 191 Schumann: Symphony No. 2 in C major Schumann was also a mentor to Johannes Brahms, calling the young man a genius. He was right. Brahms’ Haydn Variations are a beautifully orchestrated nod to Joseph Haydn, another mentor. Completing the musical “connections” is Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto featuring the WSO’s principal bassoonist Alex Eastley. > wso.ca/masters FEB Yaron Traub, conductor Alex Eastley, bassoon Robert Schumann wrote “I am affected by everything extraordinary that goes on in the world and think it over in my own way,” confessing his role as the arch Romantic of the 19th Century. Schumann’s music is a diary of his confessional soul: rapt, poetic, joyous and deeply felt, no more so than in his Second Symphony. Bruckner & Strauss: Nature, Love & Longing “[Bruckner’s symphonies] express the most fundamental human impulses with extraordinary purity of grandeur and expression, on a monumental scale.” - Deryck Cooke Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Joni Henson, soprano Strauss: Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major (Romantic) James Feddeck, conductor Louis Schwizgebel, piano Smetana: Má vlast (My Homeland): Sárka and Vlitava (The Moldau) Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A major (Italian) 26 27 Louis Schwizgebel 01 02 Classics Series B Concert Times Beethoven’s piano concertos place the soloist as a direct protagonist to the orchestra – a role he regularly took himself when performing the five he wrote. We welcome Swiss pianist and 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Louis Schwizgebel to interpret Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto. Just back from Italy, Mendelssohn filled his Fourth Symphony with life-affirming Mediterranean sun and spirit. Bedřich Smetana created a powerful expression of Czech national spirit in the set of symphonic poems Má vlast (My Homeland), our opening music, perhaps best known for The Moldau. > Tianwa Yang wso.ca/bruckner Beethoven, Mendelssohn and a New Virtuoso - Artamag Joni Henson Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs were composed at the end of his life, an unforgettably moving conclusion whose final song portrays the love of an aging couple before the setting sun, as they close their eyes and liberate their souls. A radiant testimony to life and love. > “[Schwizgebel’s] playing also benefits from a lightening of the instrument, piano playing where every sound rings with unostentatious radiance and effortlessness.” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Avalanches of brass and transcendent utterances of a man in love with the Austrian countryside dominate Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, one of the composer’s most popular. The horn dominates, from the unforgettable opening to the Scherzo hunting scene, and one is left both elevated and inspired at the close.
