The ACBL’s new online Partnership Desk is open for business in New Orleans and attracting customers. Trying to pick up a game this weekend? Logs show that as of Thursday afternoon, there were 82 open requests. One feature that sets the online Partnership Desk apart is text message capability. “For tournament players, text message communications make looking for a partner for a game on the spot doable,” says the program’s project manager, Christina van Leeuwen. “Potential partners see your request immediately on their phone.” More than 2000 members have checked out the Partnership Desk, accessible by logging into your MyACBL account, and nearly a quarter of those Editors: Sue Munday and Brent Manley Vanderbilt enters quarterfinal stage The team known as Assael, honoring a late Turkish bridge player, staged a huge rally in the fourth quarter against the Mark Gordon team to make it to the quarterfinal round of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. Trailing 131-82 after three quarters, Team Assael outscored their opponents 63-3 in the final set for the 145-134 win. The team is named in honor of Salvador Assael, who died of a heart attack during the world championships in Lille, France, in 2012. Assael and Nafiz Zorlu won the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 2001. Continued on page 9 window shoppers have posted partner requests. There have been 200 requests for the NABC alone. Enter a pair of 12-year-old Canadians – Olivia Laufer and Albena Vassileva. They are so passionate about the game that they have established a blog to recruit their friends and recently embarked on a fundraising campaign to help Canadian players their age get to the World Youth Teams Championship next year in Salsomaggiore, Italy. Albena Vassileva and Olivia Laufer The two are in New Goodman and John Laufer. “I like math and Orleans to play a bit and talk problems and figuring things out,” she says. “I like about the game they love. Albena lives in North using my mind, and you meet a lot of people.” Bay ON, Olivia in Toronto. Albena likes bridge because “it’s an interesting “I talk to my friends about bridge a lot,” game.” says Albena, who plays frequently with her dad, Olivia and Albena were in Atlanta for the Tzvetalin Vassilev. She’s excited about returning to the city of her childhood as an award-winning novelist. And the lagniappe? There’s a big bridge tournament in town, as well. Foster had her first novel published in 2013. A proud native daughter of New Orleans, Foster was invited to speak to the students at her high-school alma mater about her writing success. “My novel, Below Sea Level, is about hope and friendship, how addiction affects a young family and how they recover.” She adds with a laugh, “But it’s not heavy handed.” The novel is set in New Orleans. Below Sea Level received an Illumination Book Award for general fiction in 2013. Hallmark TV is considering picking up the story for a TV movie. There’s a heavy vein of creativity in Foster’s family. Rumelhart, Gannon in 10K Knockout final Teams captained by Donald Rumelhart and Sean Gannon will meet today in the championship round of the NABC 10K Knockout Teams. Rumelhart, Ann Arbor MI, is playing with Jonathan Fleischmann, Bloomfield MI; Ned Irving, Hot Springs Village AR; Morrie Kleinplatz, Windsor ON, Stephen Mackay, Markham ON, and Ray Jotcham, Scarborough ON. Gannon, of Decatur GA, is playing with Blake Sanders, Jonesboro; William Higgins, Cincinnati OH, and Yauheni Siutsau, Loveland OH. The Gannon squad got to the final by knocking off the Russ Jones team, taking a 30-IMP lead at the halfway point and cruising to a 178-121 victory. By contrast, Rumelhart had to come from behind to advance against the Monica Angus squad. Angus and company led 57-38 at the half and had 6-IMP lead with a set to go. Euler saw David and Kristy Garrison of Spring TX approach Justin Lall, a Grand Life Master and one of ACBL’s best young players. The Garrisons, parents of Zach, ACBL’s youngest Life Master, did not know who Lall was or anything about his credentials. When they asked Lall to play in the midnight game, he said, “No thanks, I’m just a beginner.” When they persisted, Lall turned to Euler, who he knows, and asked if she would play with him. “But don’t tell them who I am,” he said. Euler agreed and they started the game. After the first round, the Garrisons returned to the table feeling bad about their results. They were sure they had lost. They were amazed as they read off the scores. It was win 10, win nine, win 12 . . . and so on. 19.0 Tables A 5.50 1 4.13 2 3.84 3 2.88 4 2.16 5 2.33 6 2.07 1.63 1.55 1.17 0.87 1 pm: Pralines (Grand Ballroom foyer, 3rd floor) As the Garrisons got up to head for the other table for round two, Euler said to Lall, “You’re doing really well. Just remember that 4NT is ace asking.” Round two went pretty much the same as round one and David Garrison asked, “Are you sure we’re playing the same boards?” After the third round – another win – Euler decided to fess up and tell the Garrisons what was going on. After revealing who they had been playing with, she added, “You just picked up Tiger Woods at the practice tee.” All the dumfounded Garrisons could say was, “You’re kidding!” The kicker was what Euler found out about the goings-on at the other table during the first round. The Garrisons sat down to play and their opponents asked who their teammates were. It turned out that when they looked over at the other table and saw Lall and Euler, their reaction was not what might be expected. “They weren’t afraid of Justin,” Euler said. “They were afraid of me!” C 1 2 3 4 5 Irene Crowder, Madison MS; W Jean Denson, Brandon MS James Tanner, Highland CA; Millie Garrison, Riverside CA Wilbur Argersinger, Ann Arbor MI; Kaye Hoffmaster, Somers MT Dave Drischell - Terry Graham, Seattle WA Marjorie Wandler, Italy Cross NS; Lydia Prange, Wolfville NS Dana Hastings - Frances Schenk, Baton Rouge LA Sandra Musbach, Carlsbad CA; Mary Lou Kammerer, Del Mar CA Edward Hoffer - Pamela Hoffer, Marion MA John Krah - Daniel Poore, Seattle WA Janie Wolaver - Jerrell Wolaver, Jefferson TX Sandy Kristoferson - Melanie Watson, Denton TX Masterpoint disclaimer Scores as reported in the Daily Bulletin are subject to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change. Be Scent-sitive! Some people have an extreme sensitivity to fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances. Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem. The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions. Daily Bulletin Page 3 Friday, March 20, 2015 JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS Getting the most from your conventions, part 7 By Brent Manley Eddie Kantar was giving a lecture at Leisure World, a large retirement community in California. Kantar started off, “They said I could choose any topic, but they did have one request: ‘Please don’t mention drop-dead bids.’” As mentioned yesterday, there are lots of schemes for competing against 1NT openers, weak and strong. It’s beyond the scope of this series to try to cover all the bases, so the focus will be on two widely used methods: DONT and Hamilton (also known as Cappelletti and, in Great Britain, Pottage). DONT, devised by Marty Bergen, stands for Disturb Opponents’ NoTrump. The convention has wide appeal because it’s easy to remember. In DONT: Double = One-suited hand, usually six or more cards (five-card suits not recommended) 2♣ = Clubs and a higher ranking suit, ideally with nine cards between them (5-4) 2♦ = Diamonds and a major suit (5-4 or better) 2♥ = Major suits (5-4 or better) 2♠ = Spades (six or more recommended) A double followed by spades shows a stronger hand than a direct bid of 2♠. Responses After double, 2♣ asks overcaller to name his suit (passing if his suit is clubs). In response to the two-suited bids, advancer (partner of the overcaller) bids the next higher suit if he doesn’t like the suit named. For example, 1NT – 2♣ – Pass – 2♦ indicates that advancer doesn’t like clubs. Generally, advancer passes or raises if he likes overcaller’s suit. A bid of a suit other than 2♣ shows a long suit and is to play. If advancer has a strong hand – which would be the case mostly against a weak 1NT – he can pass to covert the double to penalty Thinking bridge By Eddie Kantar Using the bidding as a guide in the play and defense Dlr: South ♠J5 Vul: None ♥A7653 ♦8 ♣ A J 10 8 3 ♠ K 10 7 3 ♠Q864 ♥ K Q 8 4 ♥ 10 9 2 ♦ 3 ♦AJ652 ♣ Q 9 4 2 ♣7 ♠A92 ♥J ♦ K Q 10 9 7 4 ♣K65 West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♦ Dbl 1♥ 1♠ 2♦ 2♠ 3♣ Pass 3NT All Pass or bid 2NT to show an opening hand or close to it. This could be important if the doubler’s side is vulnerable. Plus 500 would be poor compensation for bidding and making a vulnerable game. Note: If opener’s partner takes action over the double, advancer can double for takeout. For example, if opener’s partner bids 2♦ as a transfer to hearts, double by advancer indicates at least three-card support for spades, diamonds and clubs. It does not show values in the transfer suit or a suit named naturally. Another good use for DONT is to help your side escape from a doubled 1NT overcall. Suppose your LHO opens 1♠ and partner bids 1NT (15-18 is recommended). RHO now doubles for penalty (usually with 9+ HCP) and you’re looking at ♠5 4 ♥Q 7 6 5 ♦J 10 4 2 ♣J 6 5 If you pass, which says you are happy with 1NT doubled, it will probably be bloody. You belong in a suit contract, but which suit? Playing DONT runouts (you are running from 1NT doubled), you bid DONT style: 2♣ shows clubs and a higher suit (4-4 or better); 2♦ shows diamonds and a major and 2♥ the majors. If you have one suit (minimum of five), redouble to tell partner to bid 2♣ (just like your double of an opening 1NT will be followed by 2♣ most of the time so partner can find out about your long suit). You pass if your suit is clubs and bid your suit if it’s not. If your LHO bids, partner is off the hook. If your LHO doubles, partner must run if he doesn’t like your first suit. Hamilton Many partnerships prefer this method against weak 1NT openers because of the chances for penalties. In general, a double of a 1NT opener shows a good 14 HCP. It is not a penalty double. It simply shows high-card strength. A penalty double of 1NT would feature a long, strong suit and an entry, something like ♠ K Q J 10 9 7 ♥A 5 4 3 ♦K 5 ♣8. Other bids: 2♣ = A one-suited hand. Advancer bids 2♦ to Opening lead: ♠3 Bidding commentary: West has a perfect passed-hand takeout double: shortness in opener’s suit, 9-11 high-card points and four-card support for the unbid suits. As North, start bidding both suits rather than redoubling. It may be awkward to get both suits in beneath 3NT if you start with a redouble – particularly in competition. The 3♣ bid is invitational as North is a passed hand. Otherwise it would be forcing. Play commentary: You need seven tricks in the minors and the opponents can take three spades and the ♦A once they get in. Five club tricks are easy if West has the expected ♣Q, and two diamond tricks are likely if East, the hand that is surely long in diamonds, has the jack. Play the ♠J from dummy at trick one, your only chance to take two spade tricks. Win the first spade when North covers. You don’t relish a heart shift (it will set you). Besides, spades are surely 4-4, so find out which suit. If advancer bids a major suit, it shows length and strength in that suit. 2♦ = Major suits (5-4 or better) 2♥ = Hearts and a minor (5-4 or better) 2♠ = Spades and a minor (5-4 or better) Caution: Do not double a 1NT opener with “their range” or even the “top of their range.” Some 1NT openers are as weak as 10-12. It would be folly to stick your neck out with a 10-point hand or even 12 HCP. Stick to a solid 14 HCP or better to avoid disaster. Yes, it is annoying when an opponent bothers you with a mini 1NT, but keep a cool head and maintain discipline. Partner will appreciate it. why hold up? At trick two, lead a club to the jack, retaining the ♣K as a later hand entry, now a diamond to the 10 (the key play). If the 10 holds (or loses to the ace), you can drive out the ♦A and have nine tricks. Enter “NABC” into the search field, then select Find/View to post a request or generate a list of players seeking partners. Each member’s profile is automatically populated with their name, the date they joined the ACBL and their masterpoint total. Some players take it a step further and customize their online profile to show preferred bidding systems, online username and even a photo. The online Partnership Desk isn’t limited to tournament play. Users can post requests for club and online play as well. “It’s our goal to continually improve the Partnership Desk by adding new features and improving existing ones,” van Leeuwen says. “Your input is important in helping to determine exactly what modifications should be made.” Email partnership@acbl.org with questions or to provide feedback. 12-year-olds continued from page 1 the World Youth Open Bridge Championships were set for the last weekend of the Summer NABC at the same venue. They signed up on the spot and played behind screens for the first time. All WBF events are played that way. “It was pretty nice,” said Albena. “People didn’t talk much and it was easier to concentrate because you couldn’t see your partner’s face.” Just being at the WBF tournament, Albena said, “was an experience. It gave me confidence knowing I could do that.” Now the girls are working to raise money so that six Canadian players 14 or younger can get to the tournament in Italy. They’re not worried if they are not among the six. They want to help their contemporaries experience what they did in Atlanta. The blog site, which can be accessed through the Canadian Bridge Federation website, was set up by Olivia’s mother and older sister. Olivia and Albena write for the blog and have recruited other young players to contribute. The fundraising effort started a few months ago with a goal of $30,000 Canadian. To date, donations are up to $1,260. Eric Kokish, expert player, writer and coach, gives the blog an enthusiastic thumbs-up for the goals and the girls’ spirit. Kokish wrote on the blog: “I love the enthusiasm that Anu and her team have and I’m certain that we’ll see enormous progress in a short period of development, and maybe 2016 is a realistic target. I’m a believer and would encourage all parents to consider getting their kids involved in a well-constructed bridge program with dedicated supervisors, a good feel for kids being kids, and ambitious goals.” Olivia says they have been gratified to receive comments from Facebook and suggestions for getting publicity for the website. Canadian Bridge Federation President Nader Hanna has supported the girls’ efforts. Says Goodman, “Olivia and Albena are loving playing bridge and the opportunity to learn, particularly under Nader Hanna. He has been amazing.” On Thursday at this tournament, Olivia and Albena – both fluent in French – interviewed star Vince Demuy in French. The eight-minute video will soon be posted to their blog. The blog and the fundraising have not distracted Olivia and Albena from the game itself. They are still enthusiastic about playing and improving. Both acknowledge they have a lot to learn. “I still need to improve,” Albena says. “and learn some more conventions.” Continued on page 7 Friday, March 20, 2015 Page 6 Fighting a losing battle By Barry Rigal When you lose to a team of world champions, one consolation is that there is often the opportunity to find a well-played board. This report includes a well-played deal, a missed opportunity and a might-have-been. Let’s look at “damage limitation” first. Dlr: South ♠983 Vul: N-S ♥ Q 10 7 6 5 2 ♦4 ♣ A 10 2 ♠ Q 7 3 ♠K ♥ K 9 4 ♥AJ83 ♦ A Q 7 ♦KJ9853 ♣ K J 8 2 ♣Q6 ♠ A J 10 6 5 4 ♥— ♦ 10 6 2 ♣9754 West North East South Zia SimsonDuboin Aker 2♠ Pass 3♠ Dbl All Pass Zia Mahmood backed up his bloodthirsty penalty pass with a devastating lead – a low trump. Had Jeff Aker taken this, he would have held himself to six tricks – West gets in to clear trumps and kill the ruffs. Instead, Aker made an unusual play to hold his losses by ducking when Giorgio Duboin played the trump king at trick one. The defense could not now play enough trumps to prevent a diamond ruff in dummy, and even then had to sacrifice the second trump trick in the process. That Aker held the loss on the deal to minus 500 was no triumph, but not a disaster either. The next deal presented a ticklish declarer-play problem. Dlr: East ♠5 Vul: N-S ♥AK7 ♦AQ8654 ♣Q72 ♠A842 ♥ 10 9 6 5 ♦ K 10 9 ♣A5 West North East South 2♠ Pass 3♠ Dbl Pass 4♥ All Pass In 4♥, you receive the lead of the ♠J from Duboin. Zia overtakes with the ♠Q. How would you play from there? At the table, declarer went after clubs but eventually lost control. The 4-2 trump break proved to be too much for him. The best line seems to me to be to duck the spade. If East plays a second space, ruff, cash dummy’s top hearts, return to hand with the ♦K and play a third trump. If East shifts to a club at trick two, go up with the ace and play three rounds of trumps. So long as trumps break or East has honor-doubleton, you are home. When the author and her Palm Beach bridge partner, Polly Norris, realized the convent-school appearance would coincide with the NABC, they booked an open-ended ticket. They notched several fine finishes in the I/N events they entered. “We are enjoying this tournament so much,” she says. “The people playing in it and the people directing it are all so nice. We’re just having a blast!” Foster says she’s got two books coming this year. “Sliding is set in New York, in the mid-1980s and will be available this summer. Please buy your entry early! NABC+ pairs events requires time to allow for proper seeding. The ACBL asks participants to please buy entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair. Avoid the lines by buying your entry online. Go to BridgeWinners.com – your initial transaction extends as long as your pair or team remains in the event and you pay only the cost of the entry – there is no service charge. South continued with the ♣A and I ruffed. I led a spade to dummy’s ace and floated the ♥8. So far, so good. South could have held me to four by covering, but that’s a tough play to find. I drew the remaining trump and North pitched a diamond after some thought, so it looked as though he was 4=2=4=3. I threw a diamond from the dummy. Now I could see my way to 11 tricks if South’s second spade was the 9, 10 or queen, but I had to guess which. The odds favored the 9 or 10, so I ran the jack. I had a nagging feeling, though, that I ought to have been able to avoid the guess. After the session I realized that I had been distracted by the potential power of my spade spots. I did not need the ♠J or ♠8 at all. I could duck a spade and take the rest of the tricks with a double squeeze. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing about acrostic puzzles is that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author … followed by the title of that book! You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells which of the clue answers will give you that particular letter. Working in both directions … from the clues to the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) when solving acrostics. Just keep plugging away, back and forth, and BOTH puzzles … the quote and the clue answers … can be solved eventually. Enjoy yourselves! The images will be recorded and be available for later official inspection and review. By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated. Notice to players Each player must have an ACBL convention card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes. J.F. “Lowen” Lowenstein is a popular and successful player, teacher and mentor in Unit 134. He began duplicate bridge shortly before Katrina, but the hurricane disrupted bridge in New Orleans considerably. As the city began to recover, he resumed bridge, advancing rapidly and by 2010, he was quite serious about duplicate. He left his job in insurance and began teaching full time. He is an effective teacher, patient and kind, and he is proud Page 19 Friday, March 20, 2015 Today’s Sponsors of the many students who have progressed from learning bridge to playing at the club and then to playing in tournaments.
