WORLD TOURNAMENT 2011
I have been writing articles for the
national NewsLine magazine on the
championship ladies games for several
years. Of course these are the top pitchers in the World. It is such a privilege to
get to know them and learn what makes
them champions.
However, this year I somehow had the
good luck to vie for a top spot in my
class at the World. I know it’s a very
different category but the emotions have
got to be the same.
After two days of pitching, I was tied
for 1st place – each of us having 9 wins
and 1 loss. We had 3 games to go on day
three. I was so nervous my first game,
it’s a wonder I even hit the pit. My opponent and I were tied at 38 shoes. I
knew I had to win. She threw and both
shoes bounced away – I managed a
ringer. 23- 20 Whew!!! In the second
game I had my opponent 30-17 and
again nerves took over. Final score was
30-29. Still Shaking! The last game I
just told myself ‘you can do this’ and
Just relaxed and pitched my best. I
knew the #2 gal had lost a game. When
I won my last game I just burst into
tears. It was an amazing and unbelievable feeling. This was my 20th World

Hi all !
Another year is wrapping
up and it has been another great
year for Washington Horseshoes,
a world champ, second in as many
years. A class winner and a 4th place finish.
For you keeping score, that is 3 for 3.
I am so happy for our 3 world travelers. Nice looking hardware !!
The state tournament is just around
the corner and looks like the Olympia club is
on it. I drove by the courts and we could
have played today.
Sorry about the voice mail box, but
Rhonda was gone for 3 days on business
travel and I didn’t want to mess up her stuff.
See you on the courts,
Don

Hi Horseshoe Family,
A note to let you know I had a call from Cora
Moller's daughter today, telling me Cora is in the Chelan Hospital with terminal cancer. Duane asked her to
call us. I don't know if she called other horseshoe'rs.....so I'm passing the sad news on to the addresses I have, here on my laptop.
Their home address is PO Box 175, Chelan, WA
98816. I don't have the hospital address.
Some of you know her, some don't, but wanted to let
you all know. Jim.....please pass the word & prayers
for her comfort, and Duane's.

Tournament and I had never even placed before. I knew this
was not a top world pitcher championship game – but for me
I felt on top of the World!
I was very proud when Jim placed in the money at 4th in his
class. And then Russ came along and became the Elders
World Champion – and I cried again.
The World Tournament is such a special time. Everyone
should, at least once, take the opportunity to strive for a
world title. It is the highlight of my horseshoe pitching years.
We had a great time in Monroe, Louisiana and covered a
lot of beautiful countryside. But as we were driving home,
we crested a hill and off in the distance I saw the snow
capped mountains and my heart skipped a beat – I knew I
was coming home. What a great feeling.

While at the Bellingham International
Tournament, I took some time at the end
of the day to sit down with Ray DeBoer from the Skagit Horseshoe Club.
Ray became involved in the game of horseshoes about 1985. He told me that he was out riding his
bicycle one evening when he heard some clinking. When he went to investigate, he met Bill Owens
where the old Burlington Horseshoe pits were located. No sooner than when he found what the clinking was all
about Bill Owens put a pair of Horseshoes in his hands. Shortly after he got involved with the sport he was
pitching about 25% at 40 feet and then he progressed to 48% at 40 feet.
He was the President of the Skagit club for (15) years. I asked him if he has ever won a State Tournament in
his class. He said that in 2000 he won the State in Burlington, and he also won in Bellingham, but couldn't recall
the year. When I asked him if he could recall any memorable games his reply was that he had won a 3rd place at
the World Tournament in Bismarck North Dakota.
Ray told me that one of the things that really excited him was that in 2010 at he was inducted into the Washington State Hall of Fame at Spokane. He was not present when the presentation was made, but it was presented to him at a club meeting held at Margaret Byfields and he still can't believe it.
Ray has just moved up to the 30 foot mark. He does have pits at his house, but he does most of his pitching
with the club. Ray said if there is anyone he would likely want to emulate, it would be Paul Quam because he's
like an old Timex (takes a licking and keeps on ticking)

Horseshoe Pitching
Ed:
...The demise of the Hermiston
Open, (The Money Tournament)
has had a profound effect on the
vision that I see going forward
for Horseshoe Pitching. In my
heritage, going back as far as I
can remember, the shoes from
those big workhorses have always been a part of my life. My
grandfather raised Percherons,
and the discarded shoes from
those big workhorses hung on a
tree, along with some ‘store
bought’ pitching horseshoes
where he and his neighbors
pitched in the farmyard.
In every public park, in every
campground, horseshoe pits were
included as part of the design.
Living where I do, where one
can use the excuse “I got caught
in a cattle drive” for being late
for work, I believed that horseshoe pitching would ’catch on’. I
built horseshoe pits in the city
park, and hold two tournaments a
year there. My vision that this
community would embrace
horseshoe pitching has not
