AES-IntelliNet Private Mesh Radio Alarm Communications Central Monitoring Stations College and University Campuses Municipalities School Districts Corporate Campuses Military Bases AES-IntelliNet™ is a private, two-way, wireless mesh alarm communications system that provides significant performance and cost benefits over legacy telephone, radio tower or cellular-based alarm communications systems. AES-IntelliNet solutions offer: Fast, reliable, critical event solutions for alarm monitoring companies, building owners and facilities managers, without recurring monthly costs • Increase Profits/RMR Increase Profits/RMR High Reliability and Speed Central stations increase profits and recurring monthly revenue (RMR) by eliminating monthly costs associated with public telco services. AES-IntelliNet’s unique patented mesh network creates multiple paths for the alarm to reach the CMS offering high reliability and significant speed improvements over traditional alarm communications technologies. If any transceiver unit in the network is unable to store and forward the data, the network immediately analyzes and selects an alternate route ensuring that the alarm communications is delivered to the CMS. •Reduced Operating Costs Reduced Operating Costs •Long Range Coverage •Higher Reliability and Speed •Low Installation and Management Cost •Control of Critical Event Communications AES-IntelliNet doesn’t require phone lines, cellular networks or radio towers. Each unit is a transmitter and receiver creating a network with multiple communication paths to the Central Monitoring Station (CMS). AES-IntelliNet is customer-owned and operates with no monthly telephone, cellular, or tower based private radio fees. Long Range AES-IntelliNet networks grow by adding additional Transceiver Units. Data hopping, typically 3-5 miles (and often much greater) means multi-building facilities can easily and inexpensively be monitored with AES‑IntelliNet. Low Installation and Management Cost The two-way sending and receiving capability means that AES-IntelliNet networks can be managed remotely from the CMS. As new units are added, the network dynamically reconfigures itself to incorporate the new paths. This allows network expansion without investing in additional infrastructure or incurring additional third party costs. AES-IntelliNet is a wireless mesh network made up of smart subscriber units, which act as a receiver, transmitter and repeater. Each alarm site is linked to the network by this smart device. The network allows distant subscriber units to use other subscriber units to relay the alarm message to the central receiver. Signals follow the shortest, most reliable route available insuring fast reliable alarm communications. Central Station Subscriber Units Central Monitoring Receiver 7705i and 7005i MultiNet Wireless-to-Internet Monitoring Systems These advanced central receivers manage and monitor one or more AES-IntelliNet mesh radio networks. Alarm signals are communicated via mesh radio (transceiver units) to a remote or central receiving point (IP-Link) in a region and then relayed via the Internet to the Central Monitoring Station. Remote networks of AES-IntelliNet Transceiver Units can be backhauled over any distance via the Internet. The 7705i meets UL/ULC requirements and is NFPA compliant. The key AES MultiNet system components are: • 7705i/7005i Receiver – A rugged rack mounted receiver that contains the AES receiver integrated with the Linux server • 7170 IP Link Remote Receiver – The 7170 collects AES‑IntelliNet wireless signals and converts them to TCP/IP packets for transmission to the 7705i/ 7005i. No More Boundaries Multi-region fire and security alarm monitoring companies can now offer the benefits of AES-IntelliNet 2-way wireless alarm communications to customers in regions that are separated by too great a distance to solely use radio transmission. Large regional users of AES-IntelliNet networks can use the AESMulti‑Net system to expand their system capacity, increase coverage and increase recurring revenue. May 2013 285 Newbury Street • Peabody, MA 01960 USA 1-978-535-7310 • www.aes-intellinet.com MultiChannel Technology: Integrating Wireless & IP Technologies OVERVIEW In the mid-1990s, AES Corporation created what became one of the world’s best-selling wireless alarm communication technologies, AES-IntelliNet. The advantages over competitive technologies are numerous including speed, reliability, security, cost and the guarantee that the technology will never sunset. However, market innovators cannot be complacent because client needs evolve as the security market regularly redefines itself. To further enhance AES-IntelliNet’s capabilities and meet demand for true dual technology networks, AES has added full IP transmission and reception to the AES-IntelliNet arsenal of solutions. KEY ISSUES Alarm providers, official bodies and insurers are all focused on total security of transmission as the barometer for success. With decades of experience and hundreds of thousands of end users, AES-IntelliNet’s two-way mesh radio has proved to be the most reliable method for transmitting critical alarm signals back to the Central Station. Despite the industry-leading efficiencies, AES is constantly pursuing ways to further enhance it’s reliability. Our team looked at what can disrupt competitive technologies such as cellular, GSM, GPRS, IP and PSTN as a means for improving our own performance. Here’s what we identified as key technological loopholes. 1. Sluggish Transmission Speeds Transmission times will slow down from situations overloading a network’s capacity. For instance, a national power outage can generate thousands of ‘AC failure’ messages. In such circumstances, cellular, GSM, and IP networks have completely lost or delayed messages for multiple days. AES-IntelliNet, on the other hand, will deliver 100% of its messages, within a reasonable time frame. 2. RF Jamming RF jamming has never succeeded with AES-IntelliNet, even in situations where the superior jamming technology exists. Unlike AES’s unique wireless mesh network, cellular and GSM networks are disabled by jamming devices that are relatively easy to obtain. There are even smart jammers that can mimic GPRS acknowledgements, thus defeating the GPRS transmissions of alarm messages. 3. Antenna Cuts Antenna cuts present a potential weakness for any wireless system if the antenna is destroyed. If a subscriber unit is correctly installed within the protected zone, antenna cuts are not possible because the intruder will be detected prior to having access to the antenna. Any sabotage to the antenna would be locally reported in the sabotage or anti-tamper function of the alarm panel. With cellular and GSM networks, the local provider’s antenna could be attacked rendering the network useless. This cannot affect AES-IntelliNet as it has up to 8 wireless paths back to the Central Station. 4. Real Time Information Today customers are used to “real time information” being readily available at the tip of their fingers. Customers expect that today’s alarm systems are no longer limited to on-site operation. This “enhanced” interface happens via mobile units, desktop, and must be at the same time, integrated with the security system, in a very reliable manner. 5. Ease of Integration The deployment of the new technologies should be easy to integrate with the existing customer base. The solution adopted cannot impose a “replacement” of the existing functional system. 1-978-535-7310 www.aes-intellinet.com Timeless Mesh Radio Technology 1 MultiChannel Technology: Integrating Wireless & IP Technologies 6. Sunset Technologies Since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an independent U.S. government agency, established the Sunset Clause for Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) Cellular Network in February 2008, most people in the security field know that cellular technologies phase outs could strike at any time and have a significant impact on the alarm monitoring industry. There is uncertainty as to specifically when, causing alarm dealers to think about how they will plan and implement a new alternative wireless communications solution in the time remaining before the termination. It is happening again and, to make matters worse, the cycles are getting shorter and shorter combined with the service deterioration— making it a major factor for alarm communications. POTENTIAL PARTNER TECHNOLOGIES Even though AES-IntelliNet has never actually been affected by any of the above issues, AES strives to get as near to a perfect protection as technologically possible. As a result, all alternative transmission methods were evaluated to see which would: a) Enhance AES-IntelliNet performance b) Optimize transmission times c) Overcome weaknesses affecting RF technologies The choice of potential ‘partner’ technologies is limited since the most reliable standard connection method—POTS or PSTN—is in sunset mode and has disappeared in many parts of the world. What is left? 1. Leased Lines In some areas, even though PSTN has been disconnected or is expecting to be disconnected, direct connections are still available via copper or fiber optics. Both are excellent from a security point of view, but they are not universally available. AES-IntelliNet is deployed in over 85 countries around the world, so its technology needs to retain a high level of flexibility. 2. Cellular Communication The first problem with using what is basically the replacement of PSTN is that it continues to change. Since the inception of what would simply be described as portable radio phone technology in the late 1980s, there have been at least twelve technologies or roughly one new one every three years. AES-IntelliNet is still the same after 39 years. In addition to constant change in the technology, jamming equipment is far too readily available for cellular communication. 3. Internet Protocol (IP) Connections Whether peer-to-peer connections are used (sometimes referred to as “working in the background”) or if the connection is made via a hosting server, this connectivity usually belongs to an internet service provider who is generating revenue. The first connection is preferable since the third-party element is considerably reduced due to IP addresses being unknown to third-parties and disguised “geographically.” Internet protocol is supported over multiple media, such as cable, phone lines, fiber, power and wireless. It allows communication between desktop computers, laptops, portable phones, networks, appliances or any other IP capable device. This capability of communication between simple devices is now being referred to as M2M (machine to machine), also known as the “internet of things.” THE SELECTED TECHNOLOGY After evaluation, it was decided that IP was the best secondary mode to adopt. As a result, AES-IntelliNet has made the incorporation of an IP connection virtually seamless. 1-978-535-7310 www.aes-intellinet.com Timeless Mesh Radio Technology 2 MultiChannel Technology: Integrating Wireless & IP Technologies IP has been available for some time, but only recently has it achieved a level of reliability and cost point that justifies its integration into the alarm industry. Its ease of understanding and critical mass from a technical and market point of view, plus its secure communication methods make it a suitable partner to the alarm industry. However, IP alone is not 100% reliable and that is we designed the multichannel technology. Radio is the dedicated path for critical emergency issues. IP becomes the redundant path for high volume data transfer and non critical security operations. If the PSTN is still there, our system leverages its presence to utilize three separate technologies with multiple paths. AES-IntelliNet timeless mesh radio technology is proven to be the most effective solution for the alarm industry. It delivers reliable, long-range communication between the protected premise and monitoring service. It is also scalable, sustainable, and easy to manage with no worries about technology obsolescence or costly upgrades. AES-IntelliNet technology provides a dealer-owned private radio network that secures the wireless mesh communications which businesses in the Fire and Life Safety market rely on. AES engineered a technology that is reliable and will remain available for years to come. In the same manner that AES RF technology is tailored to the alarm industry to prevent the cellular sunset factor, AES has researched and developed the same breakthrough with IP technology. EXISTING AES FAMILY OF RADIO-BASED PRODUCTS Building upon the current suite of subscribers, AES has several wireless and IP product options that enhance the modularity of the system and the ease of connection. This ease of connectivity, and other innate advantages of using a wireless mesh network noted below, make AES-IntelliNet the most powerful alarm communication tool available. • True dual routing of any alarm messages, defaulting to radio, then IP • Faster check-in times, without causing unnecessary wireless traffic • Separation of technical monitoring and true alarm messages for maximum speed • Ability to communicate with and remotely administer an ever growing list of alarm panels and other devices • Provision of facilities for end users to remotely monitor and control their sites from any iPhone or Android smartphone • Panels and subscriber units do not have to be hardwired with the Wi-Fi panel connector The messages and how their routing is handled are totally programmable according to local or client requirements. For example, if check-ins are needed more frequently, or open and closing peaks are expected, these can be done via IP. This leaves the wireless channels free for actual alarms to arrive at the highest speed possible. AES Corporation has always prided itself in leading the field and the new dual technology is no exception. Adding full IP capability to existing two-way radio networks with radio subscriber products necessitated that legacy systems could (1) be upgraded with ease and (2) evolve into dual technology systems. AES SUITE OF IP SOLUTIONS At AES, we listen to the alarm industry around the world. The main requirements are: seamless integration, same features as using PSTN, enhanced customer experience, ease of installation, expanded security features, and low cost. We created a suite of solutions that addresses all the main requirements and more. 1. IP Alarm Delivery It is easy to make the analogy between the IP alarm delivery and the PSTN alarm delivery. However, 1-978-535-7310 www.aes-intellinet.com Timeless Mesh Radio Technology 3 MultiChannel Technology: Integrating Wireless & IP Technologies creating a solution that does not require the installer to be an “IT expert” was one of the main goals. Our current solutions integrate into any existing IP network in a manner that NO RECONFIGURATION is needed on the internet settings at the customer premises, and, if the customer changes its service provider, the AES solution can adjust to it without any disruption. Its installation is simple: if the customer can surf the web, our solution works right away. In addition, IP provides a capability that the PSTN never offered: a high rate check-in. The IP Alarm Delivery integrates into the AES-IntelliNet system without any modification on the AES receivers. 2. Remote Upload/Download without replacing panel One of the main reasons phone lines are still used for the alarm industry is to allow remote configuration of the panels. At AES we created the Modem over IP (MoIP) solution, allowing a 100% seamless integration of the existing alarm panels and the central station programming applications. Our “IP modem” integrates with the existing software like it was a PSTN modem, and the MoIP concept handles the communication between the subscriber module and the IP modem. We currently support major manufacturer’s panels and software—and the list keeps on growing. 3. AES-InterActive End users are getting used to having Apps to help them with daily life and business. This market trend has prompted the need for remote monitoring and control of protected sites. To meet this need, AES-IntelliNet now offers AES-InterActive security service for iPhones and Android devices. Via our secure site servers, clients can have the control and confidence they deserve. With AES-InterActive, users can disable the alarm to allow service technicians, children, or even utility meter readers access, or update the system’s password without having to visit the location. The possibilities of interactive services are very flexible and the level of control will continue to grow. 4. AES IP Capable Subscribers The option of upgrading the existing radio network to have IP capable RF units has also been addressed. Our current IP solution can be integrated into any existing AES RF network. In addition, it allows automatic field updates and features activation/deactivation capabilities, ensuring any new feature can be controlled remotely. 5. Wireless Data Link Sometimes, especially in residential and office environments, running a data cable between the AES subscriber and the data modem is not possible either because of physical limitations or aesthetic reasons. No problem. AES now offers a wireless data link connecting the data modem to the AES subscriber wirelessly, up to 60 feet inside a building. At the Alarm Dealer Location: The AES 7205 PC-MoIP is used at the central station. Using this unique system, central station operators use the same PC, running the same upload/download application as they have in the past—no re-training. The 7205 PC-MoIP connects just like a normal modem, but there is no phone line—just the internet. At the Customer Location: The AES 7667 AP-MoIPs are alarm panel interfaces to new or existing AES radio security subscriber units. These new modules enable upload/download of full panel configuration, event logs, panel control, or any other operation that can be done via the phone line…but without the phone line! Traditional copper lines are going away and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) lines are problematic with many legacy alarm panels. AES MoIP technology solves all of these issues. www.aes-intellinet.com Modem over IP: Legacy Alarm Panel Downloading Over the Internet How Data Moves Through the System The AES 7667 AP-MoIP module interfaces with the alarm panel via its dialer output. The module is housed and powered by the AES subscriber unit, which connects to the operator’s AES mesh network. Alarm Signals, including CID, Bosch Modem, or pulse format, are sent from the Alarm Panel (AP) to the AES receiver. Panel Uploads/Downloads are accomplished using AES MoIP technology over an internet connection. How the MoIP System Works The 7205 (PC-MoIP) becomes another modem for the existing upload/ download PC; there is no need to replace the current system! The operator of the upload/ download program selects a panel and clicks on Connect; then the MoIP system converts the phone number to a MAC address in the AES alarm panel interface (AP-MoIP). Using its full PTSN ability, the AP-MoIP “rings” the panel. The panel “picks up” and sends back a "connection successful" message to both the PC-MoIP and the upload/ download application. The data that would normally be sent from the upload/ download application to the Alarm Panel over modem through the Public Switched Telephone Service (PTSN) is now sent through the MoIP solution over TCP/IP. Compatibility The AES MoIP technology is compatible with many brands. It is also backward compatible for use with legacy alarm panels and legacy download software, including: • Honeywell, Vista using Compass application; • DSC using DLS application; • Interlogix/UTC using DL900 or Enterprise application; • Bosch using the RPS application; • Napco using the Quickloader application. www.aes-intellinet.com Modem over IP: Legacy Alarm Panel Downloading Over the Internet Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Q: Does this system enable me to re-establish upload/download capability with a customer who has discontinued their POTS telephone line? A: Yes! As long as the location has internet access, the AES MoIP technology will re-connect you for uploading/downloading of that customer’s alarm panel. Q: Can I use my existing up/download software? A: Yes! The same software and PC hardware is used. You will install the AES 7205 PC-MoIP in place of the existing modem. Even if you have multiple modems from different manufacturers, one 7205 replaces them all. Q: Can I use my existing alarm panels? A: Yes! Instead of connecting the panel’s dialer output to a telephone line, you will connect it to an AES 7667 “AP-MoIP” interface. This device emulates a telephone line to communicate to the panel, and links to local LAN for internet access. Q: Will this work with my customer’s internet connection? A: Yes! No special programming is needed. Simply connect the AES AP-MoIP to the customer’s internet enabled router. Q: My customer’s records are in my download software, including their telephone number. So if there’s no phone line, how does the software communicate with that customer’s alarm panel? A: Excellent Question! The AES 7205 PC-MoIP includes translation software that you match up the old telephone number with a MAC address on the AP-MoIP. When the PC-MoIP detects the software “dialing” that number, it converts it to a MAC address and establishes a connection to the AP-MoIP and the alarm panel at that location. Please Join Us! Because it complies with the International IEEE802.11n standard with a variable power output, the BH4 supports longer range higher bandwidth applications than traditional 802.11/WiFi. In fact it can go up to 4000 meters indoors or outdoors, using its highly efficient built-in antenna or even longer range, using an optional external antenna. Flexible Utilization It can be used as a IP camera or IP encoder input point or for VoIP, and of course as an AESIntelliNet long-range mesh radio alarm transmission 'pipeline' in association with an AES 7170 IP Link Remote Transceiver. Flexible Deployment • Point-to-Point – To communicate between BH4 units, simply plug in the supplied PoE mains adapter and connect an IP camera, IP encoder or router via a Cat 5 cable and it operates within seconds. • Point-to-Multipoint – To communicate between multiple BH4s to a centralized BH4 used as a collector. • Sequentially – By deploying BH4s back-to-back, single point or multipoint clusters can be sent over multiple 4 km 'hops' or to circumvent 'line of sight' obstacles and/or to increase the network’s range. Long-Range CCTV Networks To further enhance the range of the wireless network there are 2 options: 1.Use an optional external high gain dipole antenna connected either directly or via an appropriate coaxial cable to the BH4 antenna receptacle on the top of the unit 2. Utilize the very long range wireless transmission link, the AES BH1 as a means to transmit hundreds of cameras, VoIP or other data devices some 10-15 times the range of the BH4.
